Happy memories come back to me of this glorious building, having wandered in there on a cold wet afternoon in 1950, I was serving my national service with The Green Howards, dont recall seeing anyone else there neither staff or visitors, seemed no security back then, but enjoyed an unforgettable afternoon, the entire building to myself,lovely.
An act of munificent generosity from individuals who earned obscene sums of wealth through nothing more than being born in the right family and, through divine right, inherited a lot of rock that was laid down millions of years before they were born.
