Dead Air Sandman-S on a 7.5" Springfield Armory Saint Victor 5 56 NATO

  • In this video, i'm comparing a JMac Customs 2-Chamber KeyMo brake versus my Dead Air Sandman-S on my 7.5" Springfield Armory Saint Victor 5.56 pistol.
    Notice how much the suppressor reduces the flash, concussion, and blast, and redirects it all downrange. This is just one of the many positive reasons to get into suppressors. Not to mention the fact you can shoot without blowing out your eardrums while hunting, or in an emergency situation where you don't have time to put on hearing protection.
    The 5.56x45 NATO is already a VERY hard round to tame down and suppress to a tolerable level in "normal-length" barrels, but when you get below a 13" barrel, it starts getting REALLY loud, and produces huge flash and fireballs from all the excess heat from unburnt powder exiting the muzzle. That extra flame and heat is extremely hard on a suppressor, so if you are going to suppress a 5.56 pistol or a 5.56 SBR, then you will need a true hard-use machine-gun suppressor with NO barrel length restrictions like the Dead Air Sandman series suppressors or their new Sierra5 dedicated 5.56 suppressor. They are made with Stellite® baffles and a 17-4 PH Stainless Steel welded core, inside of a solid Stainless Steel tube, with a welded KeyMo QD mount. It doesn't get much tougher than the Sandman suppressors for short barrels, hard-use, and full-auto firing schedules.
    If you have any questions or comments or want to discuss the video or your personal experiences with either platform, feel free to post them down below.
    I get all of my Suppressors, Tax Stamps, and Trusts through Silencer Shop.

    Thanks for the video!
    1. What 5.56 ammo were you using?
    2. Have you tried the Hornady Black 5.56 SBR 75 gr ammo, designed specifically for SBR firearms? Hornady claims that when shooting it suppressed, it will significantly reduce the sound. I’m waiting approval on a Sandman S to try this ammo in a DD MK18.
    Thank you!

      For cheap range plinking I use steel cased Tula 55gr. But for any sort of groups or function testing or anything really important, I shoot Lake City XM193F 55gr.
      No, I haven't tried the Honrady. I refuse to pay that much per round for 5.56 ammo to plink with. But I wouldn't mind getting a few boxes to load up in my mags for self-defense, since this is my "nightstand" gun. Thanks for the suggestion. 👍🏼

    You seem to be the only one who has successfully done this, and you did it a year ago. Plz help!
    I’m looking at my saint 7.5” 556 & it only has a 1.25” inner diameter on the hand guard.. Dead Air says Sandman S is 1.5”
    Does the 2c key micro add enough length by itself to clear the hand guard? Or did you have to change barrel/guard?

    • @TroyPosey
      @TroyPosey  9 місяців тому +1

      No, you need a 1” barrel adapter, THEN you install and time your KeyMo brake. But you need to buy a quality 1” extension that is an actual barrel extension, because it will have been threaded bore-centric to ensure your threads are square so you don’t get baffle strikes. I used the KVP (Kaw Valley Precision) 1” barrel extender with 1/2x28 threads. It’s only $29.99. I would link you to it, but UA-cam has a weird policy about that, and will remove my video and give me an account strike. 🤦🏼

    Love your stuff and have been watching quite a few of your vids lately.
    I am wondering if you can give me some advice? I'm looking for a rifle can (mostly 556, some 762x39), would you recommend the Nomad or Sandman S? Looking for one can that will last me a good long while. Thanks!

    • @TroyPosey
      @TroyPosey  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching! That means a lot!
      This is a complicated subject, so get ready for some reading... Haha
      Well, that depends... Almost ALL USA-produced AR15 barrels should be 100% good-to-go on alignment, because they are threaded bore-centric at production plant. So if it was JUST for an AR, I'd say either of those cans would be great! The Nomad-30 will be a little bit quieter, but the Sandman-S is one of the toughest suppressors on the market, and can handle just about anything you can throw at it.
      BUT... If you are referencing an AK47 in 7.62x39 into this mix, things get a bit squiffy... You have to be very careful using a regular .30 caliber suppressor on an AK47. Foreign-built, cheap, or inexpensive AK rifles, or rifles built from cheap mil surplus import parts kits, the barrel's external threads were most-likely NOT threaded bore-centric like an AR15 is... Which is where the barrel was aligned in the lathe bed according to the bore's runout, and NOT the outside diameter of the barrel (which can give you a false reading).
      Most Ak's were aligned and then threaded based on the outside of the barrel's runout, and are NOT concentric to the bore, because they weren't originally designed to be shot suppressed, so the alignment to the bore is going to be slightly off. This means that when using a regular .30 caliber can on an AK, it can cause baffle strikes, and in some really poorly aligned cases, severely-damaged and even blown-up suppressors.
      If you have a very high-quality AK rifle, such as a Kalashnikov USA or some of the other high-end brands that make their own barrels in-house (you can always call the manufacturers to find out for sure if they are bore-centrically threaded), then you should be good-to-go with a regular suppressor, just like any other rifle. If this is the case, then I would say the Sandman-S would be the best option for you for both the AK and AR.
      If you find out that your AK is not one of the bore-centric manufacturers, the Dead Air Wolverine, is made specifically to deal with this issue, to avoid having any issues. And it is also an excellent suppressor, that was designed speficially for the AK rifles.
      Now, even if your rifle is not one of the bore-centric brands, that does not necessarily mean that it's game-over for running a Sandman-S. And here's why...
      I would strongly suggest buying a 7.62 alignment rod for like $30-50, and then buy your JMac Customs KeyMo muzzle device that's threaded for your AK's barrel threads to be able to run a KeyMo setup. Install and properly time your muzzle device, and then insert your alignment rod into the bore, and push it all the way in up to the end of the muzzle brake. And if that rod is sitting dead-center inside that muzzle brake, then I would suggest taking your rifle, and alignment rod, to the nearest Dead Air dealer, and asking them if it would be ok to have them put one of their Sandman-S cans on there, and then insert the alignment rod to check the alignment to make sure it's not going to strike the baffles or end cap. Most dealers are pretty cool, and they'll let you do that, especially if you buy your can from them. If everything lines up, and the alignment rod is NOT touching the end cap of the suppressor anywhere, then you should be good to go with running that suppressor. And I would buy that exact suppressor that they let you test with, so you know for sure that it will be aligned properly. 👍🏼

    How did you like this setup? I was going to get a surefire sb2 for my 7.5" 556 pdw build.

    • @TroyPosey
      @TroyPosey  2 роки тому +1

      I really like it! It's JUST at the limit for hearing safe (for me). It's right on the border of being uncomfortably loud, but still VERY tolerable compared to unsuppressed, which is absolutely ridiculously loud.
      In a SHTF situation, or in an open-air environment like taking a couple shots at a snake or coyote or something out on your property or in your yard, you'd be just fine with no discomfort, and probably wouldn't even get any ear ringing. Inside a house, it might be uncomfortably loud, but you still won't have any ear ringing. Which is quite impressive for a 7.5" 5.56. 👍🏼
      Honestly, I love their flashlights, but not a big fan of Surefire suppressors. Their mounting systems are kinda of screwy. One of the big reasons I like the Sandman-S is because it has the KeyMo system, and any suppressor with 1.375x24 HUB threads, can accept a KeyMo unit, so you can make any HUB suppressor into a KeyMo compatible unit. Whereas, with Surefire (and some other brands) they want to remain proprietary and you're kind of stuck with their mounting systems, and only their mounting systems. Just something to think about.
      If you plan on using the suppressor for your 5.56 build ONLY for that build, or only for 5.56, then the brand new Dead Air Sierra5 5.56 can is now available, and would be another great option for your build. It's built almost identical to the Sandman-S, but has the ability to accept different HUB mounting systems. You can order them with KeyMo or XENO mounting systems, and swap to some other 1.375x24 mounting solution later, if you want.
      My suggestion for a build like that, is the Sandman-S or Sierra5 being the best options. The Sandman-S, being a .30 caliber suppressor, will have less blowback and gas in your face, but will be a tiny bit louder (maybe a couple DB's) at the muzzle than the Sierra5. IMO, the low blowback from the Sandman-S makes it the better option for a short barrel 5.56 pistol/SBR/PDW.

    • @TroyPosey
      @TroyPosey  Рік тому +2

      Open-end wrench, a vise, and a reaction rod. Standard fair for most AR muzzle device swaps.
      Remove the 4 screws that hold the handguard on. Then remove the handguard. Then you have full-access to the barrel, the wrench-flats on the linear comp (what you called the blast diverter), gas system, etc…
      Then, you put the upper on the reaction rod that is tightened down into a vise, and use a 3/4” open-end wrench to remove the linear compensator by loosening it by the wrench flats that are over the barrel threads.
      Easy stuff, just requires some better tools than just holding the gun between your legs. Doing it that way can damage your firearms, so best to just drop the coin on the right tools. Buy once, cry once. 👍🏼
      I use a Wilton vise, and a Real Avid reaction rod. You can use both of these tools for working on/assembling any AR15, so it’s not just proprietary for only 1 gun. 👍🏼

      Yes, the Dead Air Sandman-S will fit on any .30 caliber (or smaller) rifle with the proper thread size KeyMo muzzle device. For a 5.56/.223 rifle, you will need a 1/2-28 thread KeyMo muzzle device. For any caliber larger than that, and up to .30 caliber, you will need a 5/8-24 thread muzzle device.
