Owen Hart dropped Dan Severn on his neck the exact same way...
The script to act like he hurt another wrestler. But he actually dropped him on purpose again.
I don't care what anyone says that's in purpose.... Look at when he drops Stone Cold and then look at when he drops Dan.

The Severn thing was an angle, go pull it up on UA-cam. That match is there, and it was an angle because Severn was carried out on board with a neck brace. Like they were recreating what happened to Austin which sounds like that idiot Russo did that.

Austin did the same sit-out tombstone to Masahiro Chono during his WCW years and it left Chono’s neck messed up the rest of his career too. You can find the clip of the move by itself on UA-cam. You can do the move sitting out. But the person being tombstoned needs to be higher up. Austin positioned himself lower which is for the traditional tombstone landing on the knees.
From the sounds of it there was just a miscommunication. I tend to think that the traditional tombstone provides less force, but sitting out would tend to be safer because you can just squeeze the legs together.
I'd probably put the blame on Owen in the end. He's the one performing the move and needs to be absolutely clear how they are going to perform the move.

@@krohnicentropy8073 Tombstone had been around for a long time before the Undertaker. Don Muraco used to do it as well as the Dynamite Kid. I'm not so sure the Tombstone is safer because the worker performing the maneuver has a difficult time seeing where the victim is positioned. With the basic sit-out piledriver the worker performing the move basically just squeezes their legs together and the 'victim' pushes off the other worker's legs with their hands. So even if you don't quite have the victim in the best of positions, the two of them can still prevent injury I would imagine most injuries form sit-out piledrivers stem from the worker being too heavy and the attacker falling back and sitting-out too soon before both workers are ready

He was never the same wrestler, but to say it was the beginning of the end of his career is just flat out wrong. He merely was forced to adjust his style to accommodate for what he could no longer do athletically. If anything, it made him better in some respects since he could no longer get over with a complex move set and hard bumps. He had to cut even better promos (and he's arguably the best of his era, along with The Rock), and really utilise sound ring psychology and ability to get the fans to pop.

In Austin's book he said Owen wanted to do a sit down piledriver cause Taker was still to wrestler later in the show and didn't want to potentially do his move(in retrospect I don't think Taker used the tombstone that night but I could be wrong), but Austin was adamant about landing on his knees. Owen relucantly agreed according to Steve. My guess is that Owen just flat out had a brain fart and did the wrong move on accident and considering how sterling him and Bret's rep was in regards to not hurting people he was so ashamed by it thats why he didn't apologize to Steve over it.
Not making an excuses for him cause he still should've manned up and apologized but I don't think he didn't do it cause he didn't care about him or had no remorse, I think it was just he felt so stupid and ashamed of himself he couldn't face Austin about it.

Okay, here is my unpopular opinion: Austin is at least partly responsible for the piledriver botch, because he took it wrong. Here's why....
Austin has himself confirmed (on his own podcast - I've heard it) that when he and Owen were putting the match together backstage, Owen told him he was going to drop to his arse, not his knees. In fact, according to Austin himself, Owen told him this twice, repeating himself when Austin queried him on it.
Now when Owen hoisted him for the piledriver, Austin immediately lashed his arms around Owen's waist, which is wrong. That is the way to take the reverse piledriver, when the person doing the move is dropping to their knees. Now watch ANYONE taking a sit-out piledriver from prolific users of that move, like Bret, Paul Orndorf or Jerry Lawler: they hook their arms around the back of the legs of the person doing the move so that when they drop to their arse, the person having the move done to them takes the force of the drop on their forearms, and their head and neck are kept safe. Despite being told twice by Owen that he was going to do the sit-out, Austin grabbed him as if he was taking the drop-to-knees reverse version.
I say "partly responsible", because Owen had a moment or two to register that Austin had botched the grip and he still did the move anyway, but there is no doubt in my mind that Austin is at least partly to blame for his injury. If he'd grabbed Owen behind his thighs, as Owen had every reason to expect him to do, the force would've been taken on his lower arms and he'd have been fine.

    • @jjb2331

@@jjb2331 Not according to Austin's version of events on his podcast, he didn't. He queried it and then thought,
"He must know what he was doing", so went with it. He did, NOT, according to his own version of the events, tell Owen not to do it, or, like he probably should've done, ask to practice it. Owen was also at fault for that, as I think Austin's uncertainty about the move should've raised a red flag in his mind.

I can't believe that Owen did that on purpose, hearing what kind of a person. However, on Austin side, I would be angry as well, again speaking for me, if I hurt someone like that in the ring, you damn well bet I would be in the Trainer's Room making sure, that guy was all right.

Before the match, Steve and Owen discussed what they were going to do and discussed how to execute and finish the match. According to Austin, he asked Owen if he was going to drop to his knees more than once and Owen said he wasn't, again, more than once. Owen had a reputation of being the biggest jokester in the WWE at the time and Austin made a bad assumption in thinking Owen was joking with him, that was actually going to go to his knees to execute the piledriver. Austin loved Owen and respected him personally. Professionally, after the piledriver, he never wanted to work with him again. If you search UA-cam for Owen's part of the story, read his facial expressions and his body language. You can tell he regretted having done that move to him. There's words thrown around that Owen never apologized but according to Bret, Owen was deeply troubled, remorseful and embarrassed that that match went down the way that it did. Owen beat himself up over it. Other than all of that, there was no bad blood between the two and anyone who's a Steve Austin fan knows that he misses Owen dearly.

    • @UMAMIMAMU

He couldn't have beaten himself up over it too much considering he did the _exact_ same thing _again_ to Dan Severn a year later. It was literally a work that wound up coming true and playing out exactly the way they planned to fake it.

From what can be reasonably inferred, partly, yes. Bear in mind that the way Bret left the company just a few months later surely made it very awkward and uncomfortable to have McMahon seriously consider it, especially with how loaded the roster was with guys just entering their prime: Triple H, Kane, Austin, Rock, Big Show arriving, and certainly others that Vince liked and saw potential in despite it never working out, such as guys like Test. Vince hates botches more than anything it seems. To his credit, he really does try hard to stress in-ring safety, and if something goes wrong, guys have all disappeared shortly thereafter or were never given a chance for a big push.

Whats the confusion? Owen assumed sit down piledriver, Austin assumed Tombstone. Except, no one does a Tombstone except UT and Kane. Why would Owen do a Tombstone?

Owen used to do a Tombstone back in Japan, probably as a homage to Dynamite Kid. He also used it at Wrestlemania X against Bret.

I think Stone Cold would of been better with the situation if Owen Hart said sorry. Stone Cold was also not happy with the shirt Owen came up with.. Saying how he broke Stone Cold 's neck. He said it would be different if he got money for the shirt too. But he didn't.

Right, I don't know why people call it a tombstone. That always requires having to drop to your knees. I call that move the inverted piledriver. Seems like a far more accurate description.

@@St99785 It's best to call it what it is. The Most Expensive Piledriver in the History of Professional Wrestling. It deserves that name because it cost Steve Austin years of his career and it cost Owen any chance of getting into the main event scene later on. It also did a lot of damage to Masahiro Chono when Steve Austin did it to him 5 years earlier. The amount of money WWE lost from all that time without Austin thanks to his neck issues caused by that move is uncountable.

@@raymonderrity1419 There's definitely a lot of truth to that, however, the silver lining is that it made Steve change his whole approach to his character, which led to the greatest money making years of his career. When you're as good on the mic, promos, and crowd interaction as Steve was/is, then you don't have to be a technically outstanding wrestler, which Steve was pre-injury. He doesn't get enough credit for that because he became most famous after the injury.

I doubt it. He was already a seasoned professional. To think like that sounds too much like a rookie mistake. The inverted piledriver is a cool looking move, but the burden of safety is almost entirely in control of the wrestler performing the move. The recipient is more uniquely vulnerable, especially when they're taller and heavier, as Austin was.

I don't know about favoritism, per se. It might just be respect for the fact that Owen is dead and can't defend himself. A lot of people take Cornette at his word, so if he says "Owen was totally at fault," then many people will take it as fact. And maybe it is a fact. But.
By all accounts, Owen was a really good guy, and he's not around to tell his side or defend himself (plus he himself died from a head injury during a wrestling match). People are curious about this incident and all, but the fact is it was over 20 years ago, and there's not really any benefit to talking about it or laying blame, other than to satisfy our curiosity. So maybe he just figured the most respectful thing was to just let it be.
