Calling it "one Netflix series" is a little disingenuous I think. It's a hugely popular series, probably the most popular thing Netflix has put out. It's a pop culture phenomenon. Wizards even released a ST themed starter set for 5e, and Matt Mercer himself credits the show with getting people into it. I'd wager more people got into the live play shows because of Stranger Things than the other way around. That being said, everything combined really created a perfect storm of conditions to make DnD big. 5e is easy for new players, it started showing up in pop culture like Stranger Things, Critical Role and other love play shows had huge success, things like D&D Beyond and Roll20 made it easier to play online.
@@HS-iw1ed ya kinda invalidated that with your follow up statement though lol. See I would say all props to live streams, but the hugely popular Stranger Things did more for D&D's resurgence than random strands online that don't even pull 1% of ST's numbers.
Wait they played a game of D&D before making the movie?! Will this be an extra on the disc? It was recorded? And whom dm'd for them? They didn't say Chris so who was the DM? They'd recognise Matt could Brennan have been called or Ibryia?
i would guess Chris Perkins or Jeremy Crawford because Pine said it was someone from WOTC and who else are they gonna trust with something this high profile?
@@docnevyn5814 They didn't name them given Chris mentioned Chris Perkins he would have mentioned who it if it had been him, so I assumed its because he didn't know who they were. They said someone from Wizards of the Coast DM'd, and Michelle referred to that person as "she", so it was a woman from Wizards and that's all we know.
I was kinda shitting on this movie, but this interview has brought some perspective to the film. Knowing most of the main cast are interested in the source material is amazing.
Yeah, Sophie has mentioned she loves Critical Role, Dimension 20, and The Adventure Zone. She's probably the biggest D&D fan of the bunch. And her character is a homage looks-wise to Keyleth from CR. They definitely did good casting her 100%. But yeah the others also seem great and invested and at least like D&D a bit in the cast. Some that's wonderful and good to hear, for sure.
and the directors are also big D&D nerds, I think they've even played in the Joe Manganiello and Friends Campaign that he talks about in interviews, don't know why that's never mentioned, that's probably the biggest factor for this movie being good
@@AnxietyRat :O Well... I wonder if we will get some of these guys guest starring on critical role and dimension 20? D20 did just announce Matt was DMing their next season this May! Tabletop RPGs are like reading a book, except you and your friends are actually in it, making it up as it goes. Adventure books are a very familiar point of reference for the older people, we should use those more. Would've saved as lot of trouble to the characters of "Jumanji: Next Level", as well
And it's also funny how dark it can get sometimes. Like, you just realized the implications of what you've done. Or how it connected to something the DM had planned and you just broke it in a bad way.
Lol Hugh looks like (and probably is) he's forced by the pr-people to be present here because of promotionial contracts. He's like that actor, who after having made a movie, still doesnt get what he just made a movie about. He looks around like they're all talking in alien tongues XD poor guy
He didn’t act like this for the promo for Guy Ritchies’ The Gentlemen. Maybe it’s more auteur based films he can stand to give a shit about when it comes to promo
Tbh this concerns me more. When actors don’t know what’s going on, how can they give a good performance if they don’t know their character and world setting. Idk most people seemed excited after this interview. This just made me more nervous. I hope it’s good and not a giant joke.
@@Jdn33315 It's a little concerning, but it's 1 actor out of the full ensemble. The rest seem fully immersed and enthusiastic, so... hopefully whatever Hugh didn't get was fixed by good direction, and anything else isn't enough to take away from the rest of the actors/movie.
I get nervous whenever I see Hugh Grant in an interview. He has a vibe like "I don't give a shit about any of this, they just told me to be here" and it feels like any second he's going to say something to make everyone around him feel terrible

I have never been more endeared to Michelle Rodriguez before after watching this interview. Also, I feel her on Vin Diesel trying to play D&D with her. Friends of mine have and I could not pay attention. Some things are too nerdy.
That's... not what she was saying at all. She said she grew up playing D&D. Her point was that Vin is too intense with it for her. D&D can be anything from casual improv storytelling and messing around with friends, to numbers-focused competitive combat. It all depends on what you, your DM, and your group decide you want to play together. "Too nerdy" is a concept you've learned from other people's unwarranted judgment, it's not an actual thing that should stop you from trying something you might enjoy.
I loved C1 more, but visually, and character appearance wise, C2 has a better fantasy look to them.. So adapting their look to a live-action would be cool to see... And C3 was just a chaos cluster of characters, lol.. They looked nothing like fantasy characters at all, they looked more in line of Marvel characters bands of misfits.. Lol.. But I love all campaign nontheless..
They’ve apparently confirmed that the CR cast will cameo somewhere in the movie. There has been no info as to where in the movie or if they will be dressed as their characters or just general townsfolk. But they will be there.
@@kaylaschropp7503 To be fair, they did not say CR. The fan asked in the SDCC panel if anyone from CR or Dimension 20 would make a cameo. And they said " a prominent figure from the D&D community would make a cameo, potentially more than one." So it literally could be anyone from any popular D&D stream. Everyone is just ASSUMING it's the folks from Critical Role. But they absolutely have NOT confirmed who the cameo is. And the Critical Role people have been absolutely silent about it. 🤷♀️ So it would be amazing if it was them...but don't get your hopes up. It could be anyone from any stream as they did not confirm ANYTHING other than a cameo will be happening.
well, you are in luck, because a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors have been playing DnD for the last 8 years and you can watch all 1000+ hours of it on the Critical Role yt channel
I have been playing DM'ing since 1974. I would LOVE to take these guys through their paces. Paper back books, 2nd ed, 3, 3. ME, even 5. (YES I skipped 4!) Homebrew forever! Take the best leave the rest.
4 doesn't count. It's basically a JRPG that they named D&D but at best is a store brand version that has dents in all the cans so they were put on clearance. It's obvious they really wanted to make it more appealing to the wider gamer verse but failed miserably and even cost them a chunk of their previous player community. I remember being so excited before it came out but then tried to play in 3 different campaigns/parties/GM's and just loathed every bit of it. I mainlined 3/3.5 but I've played 2nd (f* off THACO) and 5th too. I quite enjoy 5th as a blend of what I liked in 3/3.5 but with a lot of new options and some parts of how to play the game. Will NEVER go back to 4th, though.

@@darkhai2952 actually yes he is a literacy nerd and into art etc but he also likes sports and has been seen at quite a few games. He actually has said that he loved baseball and wanted to be a pro but when he got to college he found out that he wasn't good enough. He also wanted to be a fighter pilot but that was quickly squashed bc of very poor vision. But he did get to live out that little dream back in 2017 when he got to go up in a jet.
Michelle absolutely losing it at Hugh‘s discomfort and awkwardness is about hilarious…
this cast makes me want to see the movie so bad 🤩
Michelle is my spirit animal in this clip.
Aaww love this the way Regé talks it’s always so deep😍😍❤️❤️🥰🥰🔥🔥🙌🏾🙌🏾🙏🏾✨✨✨
Chris Pine sitting so comfortably in that couch, love to see that.
Love watching Hugh Grant looking so perpetually confused too 😍
Yeah especially cause he took his shoes off. Hoping his feet had a decent odor haha!!! He looks comfty
3:00 I can’ttttt, especially with Josh’s frightened “heyyyy” afterwards 😂
6:58 Hugh - "Who's Eddie Munson???" Chris "Some guy from Stranger Things" Hugh *eye rolls* "Not this shit again"
Not the shit again...
"You're the youngest of the bunch, so I think you'd know about Stranger Things."
Wow I am exactly her age and I would feel offended if it wasn't so hilarious.
My man Chris is one hell of a guy 👌
If you see this, cast, I already love this film keep them coming please
"Does this make Dungeons and Dragons cool now?"..When was D&D not cool?Only those people who have never played are not cool.
I know right, I was like “Mother fucker! D&D was always fucking cool!”
"Cool" is an illusion. "Cooler than you" doubly so.
The game never really caught on my country. I've known the name 'Dungeons & Dragons' for the longest time but i never knew what exactly it was.
Hello gorgeous
Thanks for the utmost love and moral support, from the bottom of my heart I appreciate you for being a wonderful Where are you commenting from?🙏❤️
Hugh Grant, on this couch, looks a bit like someone trying hard not to get the attention from anyone... a bit like a hostage, trying to survive 🤣
All props to Stranger Things, but I'm pretty sure the hundreds of actual-play-shows have done way more for D&D's resurgence than one netflix series.
@@brewdaly1873 my brother in christ, i said 'all props' for a reason
@@HS-iw1ed ya kinda invalidated that with your follow up statement though lol. See I would say all props to live streams, but the hugely popular Stranger Things did more for D&D's resurgence than random strands online that don't even pull 1% of ST's numbers.
D&D brought me to Stranger Things 😄
Dnd sees the biggest climbs when stranger things premiers. It's effect can not be overstated.
Same goes for Matt Mercer so I hope they recorded that even if audio only that would be a hell of an extra to encourage buying this on physical media!
They said someone from Wizards of the Coast DM'd, and Michelle referred to that person as "she", so it was a woman from Wizards and that's all we know.
@@IceMetalPunk well it would make an interesting extra even if audio only
@@IceMetalPunk oooo please let it have been Amy Dallen, she's huggable
My faith in the movie is higher knowing (at least some of them) have played
I loved the movie so much!! Far better than I expected
I always thought D&D or any tabletop RP game was stage acting without an audience or script.
That's basically D&D! Made-up story-telling on the spot...
It is! It's improv with structure and RNG. I've always said it's like Whose Line Is It Anyway, but the only game is Scenes From The Dice.
Totally watching because Rege is in it 🤗 plus I love Hugh by the way
I was kinda shitting on this movie, but this interview has brought some perspective to the film.
Some that's wonderful and good to hear, for sure.
and the directors are also big D&D nerds, I think they've even played in the Joe Manganiello and Friends Campaign that he talks about in interviews, don't know why that's never mentioned, that's probably the biggest factor for this movie being good
@@AnxietyRat :O
Well... I wonder if we will get some of these guys guest starring on critical role and dimension 20?
D20 did just announce Matt was DMing their next season this May! I would love to see Sophie in that!! Or Jean!
I'm also pretty impressed he was big into both D&D and RPG video games... JRPGs as well!!
And you could tell too that he was itching to actually talk about the D&D stuff in it lolol
Michelle would have been the tomboy in high school I would have had a crush with as we talk about nerdy stuff and I secretly create a mixtape for her
Hello gorgeous

Tabletop RPGs are like reading a book, except you and your friends are actually in it, making it up as it goes.
Adventure books are a very familiar point of reference for the older people, we should use those more.
Would've saved as lot of trouble to the characters of "Jumanji: Next Level", as well
Love this cast. Hugh grant is still absolutely hilarious and charming.
Hugh Grant's presence is awesome, lol
DnD is improve. Depending on the players DnD can be comedy, drama, or tragedy. Usually some combination of all of those.
And it's also funny how dark it can get sometimes.
Like, you just realized the implications of what you've done. Or how it connected to something the DM had planned and you just broke it in a bad way.
I feel like Chris is slowly turning into Jeff Bridges. He is giving me the same vibe. And I'm not complaining.
By Grabthar's hammer. What a savings.
3:03 Michelle was almost falling over from Hugh Grant's charm 😂😂😂😂😂
Didn’t they warn Hugh Grant not to call D&D specifically satanic?
I get nervous whenever I see Hugh Grant in an interview. He has a vibe like "I don't give a shit about any of this, they just told me to be here" and it feels like any second he's going to say something to make everyone around him feel terrible
Hello gorgeous

She said she grew up playing it. I think the problem with intense hobbyist like Vin is that they make you insecure about doing their hobby with them.
I watched this movie V Good movie Love from 🇵🇰
Chris really loves to tease Sophia doesn't he?
I just fell more in love with Michelle Rodriguez.
Sophia is so smol🥺🥺
Well first off, Dungeons & Dragons has always been cool, so jot that down.
No wonder Zank was such a perfect Palladian. He’s a nerd! He’s one of us!
Love Chris's Kelly Slater look
Is it just me, or did Michelle Rodriguez just get EVEN HOTTER?
Michelle absolutely losing it in the corner killed me.
If there isn’t a cameo of the cast of Critical role dressed as the S2 characters it will be a missed opportunity.
Oh wow, they could do so many cameos in this film, just for fun and just for the fans if they wanted! ^_^
Still, excited to see what their cameo actually will be!
Chris Pine promoting Don't Worry Darling: 😐 vs promoting D&D: 😀
This is a dream casttttttttt
Thanks for giving my campaign a team building exercise ♥️
Now I'm wondering how a dnd session with actors would play out xD
well, you are in luck, because a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors have been playing DnD for the last 8 years and you can watch all 1000+ hours of it on the Critical Role yt channel
I have been playing DM'ing since 1974. I would LOVE to take these guys through their paces. Paper back books, 2nd ed, 3, 3. ME, even 5.
(YES I skipped 4!)
Homebrew forever!
Take the best leave the rest.
We still play 2nd Ed :)

@jameswatson5011 - Been playing since 1977, and I completely shunned 4th edition, too!
DnD was always cool. Everyone else is playing catch up
they need to play a game together
Chris Pine giving Gen X Brad Pitt
Sophia really is Daria lol. If they make a movie she could defo play her lol
wtf is this set. Michelle seems very chill. I can picture playing with her. I like Chris Pine in general, he was a very good choice.
You can see her play a game with some of the cast of Stranger Things online.
Everyone looks comfortable in taht set. They are all sitting all relaxed, laid back. Look at Chris, he even took his shoes off!
Producer: Michelle would you like to sit on the couch
Michelle: No! I want to be the couch.
High Grant looks so weird near the end like zoned out or completely pissed off but keeping his cool
I didn't think I could love Michelle Rodriguez more...now she played D&D as a kid? Seriously woman...stop raising the bar so damn high!!
Michelle is killing me 😂😂😂
