How to use Windows Sandbox - a lightweight virtual machine

- In this step-by-step tutorial, learn how to use Windows 10 Sandbox. Windows Sandbox provides a lightweight desktop environment to safely run applications in isolation. Software installed inside the Windows Sandbox environment remains "sandboxed" and runs separately from the host machine.
A sandbox is temporary. When it's closed, all the software and files and the state are deleted. You get a brand-new instance of the sandbox every time you open the application.
Software and applications installed on the host aren't directly available in the sandbox. If you need specific applications available inside the Windows Sandbox environment, they must be explicitly installed within the environment.
Windows Sandbox has the following properties:
- Part of Windows: Everything required for this feature is included in Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. There's no need to download a VHD.
- Pristine: Every time Windows Sandbox runs, it's as clean as a brand-new installation of Windows.
- Disposable: Nothing persists on the device. Everything is discarded when the user closes the application.
- Secure: Uses hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation. It relies on the Microsoft hypervisor to run a separate kernel that isolates Windows Sandbox from the host.
- Efficient: Uses the integrated kernel scheduler, smart memory management, and virtual GPU.
Prerequisites
- Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education build 18305 or later (Windows Sandbox is currently not supported on Home SKUs)
- AMD64 architecture
- Virtualization capabilities enabled in BIOS
- At least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
- At least 1 GB of free disk space (SSD recommended)
- At least two CPU cores (four cores with hyperthreading recommended)
Installation
- Ensure that your machine is using Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, build version 18305 or later.
Usage
- Copy an executable file (and any other files needed to run the application) from the host and paste them into the Windows Sandbox window.
- Run the executable file or installer inside the sandbox.
- When you're finished experimenting, close the sandbox. A dialog box will state that all sandbox content will be discarded and permanently deleted.
- Select ok.
- Confirm that your host machine doesn't exhibit any of the modifications that you made in Windows Sandbox.

#windows10 - Наука та технологія
Excellent work. I use the sandbox frequently to check files and programs. It is an underrated feature.
Been binge watching your stuff recently. Great tutorials!
Guys if you have Win 10 Pro and still can't find the windows sandbox it might be caused because of translation on your own language! (Please like to help others!)
What bro I have it in my windows 10 pro
This is a VERY useful feature. Being in IT, I have used virtual machines for years. This is great for a quick setup, test files or applications, then quickly tear it down. Thank you Kevin!
Thank you SO much. I have wanted a virtual machine for a long time but thought it was either expensive or complicated to use. This part-time virtual with its temporary memory is PERFECT and exactly what i want.
Cheers my friend from Canada North where the snow flies freely
So awesome! definitely glad i found your channel. Even me being in IT i find myself learning alot of things i didnt know from your tutorials.
Thanks again, Kevin, this is super useful. Like always, you nailed it 💖😎👌💯
I did not know what a sandbox is. Short. Educational video. Very good job. Thank you
You are amazing, Well done. I love the KCC. A great resource you can keep using in your videos.
I wish kcc is real
Very informative as always. Thank you Kevin!
Thanks so much for the information, much appreciated easy and simple like always.
Just to add that most will see it grayed out as it’s not enabled in Bios. So just head on to bios on your machine before Windows start “Del or F2 .. mostly depending on the motherboard” and search for virtual machine or something similar to enable. Once done you will be able to enable it from windows features.
Was trying Sandboxie-Plus but found this video and it's twenty times simpler. Thank you very much for sharing your time and knowledge! Will be used.. Repeatedly! Kudos
Excellent video - a skill that I wish more users would consider before opening unknown files - haha! One caution that I seem to be running into with some students - if you have other virtualization software (VMWare is the one we were using) on the computer, adding sandbox "seems" to have caused a few to get STOP errors (blue screen). If that happens, boot to Safe Mode and delete the feature (you can just remove it). I haven't isolated the problem, but it's happened more than once. I'm not sure if it's the other software or if it's an incomplete add/remove process.
Anyhow - sandbox is a must-use feature for scenarios such as the one you show here.
Also - I'm glad that employee is no longer with you. I think the cookies actually taste better since she left.
he just have to clean his teeth (:
You are simply awesome Kevin. Your videos are well paced and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
Brilliant 👍 I never knew you could do this. Thank you very much. 😀
short and precise tutorial with good example, kudos! :)
Thanks a lot for the guide! I prepared the virtual sandbox easy with your help.
You're amazing brother! Keep up the good job.
Thanks Kevin. I think this will help for a temporary work in the PC seems to be good. And I will definitely try this sandbox. Thanks Kevin again for sharing this information.
So nifty! Thank you so much for the clear instructions!
So interested in the contents you create. Good job
That was very helpful, bro!
Best channel on UA-cam awesome tips like always 👍
Thank you it was better than I was expecting

never heard of this before, what a really useful app. Thanks for posting
Great youtube channels like mine always watch videos from great channels like yours.
Great video Kevin.
This is so cool! Thank you so much for showing us all this functionality in Microsoft products that many of us never heard of. You mentioned more advanced virtual machines using Hyper-V. Will you be making a video about that as well?
Yes! Coming soon!

Thanks so much. Very helpful
I LOVE this video! Thank you so much
Kevin! It's unbelievable how every video you do is helping me so much! YOU ARE AWESOME! I actually used hyper v to make a permanent VM as a sandbox. Including buying another license of windows 10 for the VM... If only I have known.......
Great update Kevin ... I like your tech videos 👍
Thank you for providing awesome information
Nice one Kevin . Thanks so much .
I really like your videos your my favorite tech youtuber
Very Useful Video and feature... Thanks Kevin
Liiiit!!! This is very useful sir! Thank you!
Excellent video and point well made. simple and to the point, more people should know how to do this 🙂. well done Kevin.

You seem like a very positive person; love you.
NIce video, Thanks!
Very well done. Was able to run SanBox on win10 pro
This is genious : ) It is very supportive - good feeling!
Subscribed. GOATED. Thank you kind sir.
thank you are the best in windows tools and fixing bugs
Excellent. Was not familiar with Windows Sandbox and literally had a scenario come up today where I definitely would NOT want to run a particular executable on my own machine, but in an isolated 'box' of a machine? Sure.
Great video thanks
Excellent Video.
well done, this is great
previously i've used sandboxie in winxp, now it's reassuring that win10 have included this great tool
Can you install apps and "deep freeze" it? so when you open the sandbox certain apps are already installed?
You saved my life brother ! 😭🙏🏻 I thought it was a complicated process, thank god I had windows 10 pro 😭 let's goo
thanks, didn't know this even existed.
Great tip, very very usefuk thank yoh
Thank you!
Kevin, you gave me all the answers.
Thanks for the answers you gave me.
I like to have the best Windows 11 pc at my house
Just the other day I got a file that was in Russian. I didn't trust to open it because some years back I received a Russian file and when I opened it it turned my Windows into a Russian version, it actually looked super different and I had to format. I considered a VM to try it and here I found today about Windows Sandbox! Thank you!
Nice Vid keeo it up and this what is need :D
Great tool
thanks
really useful
Awesome !!
Good stuff. LoL carefully avoided the topic of running sandboxed keygens in this presentation! 😊 probably its primary use... Anyway, in online top 10s of Sandbox solutions the Windows Sandbox always comes last, I guess that's because there is no way to monetize that entry, whereas the other products may pay for click throughs. BTW like others have indicated you forgot to mention in the video that the virtualization capabilities must first be enabled in the BIOS/UEF although you DO mention this in the description...
Thank you so much Sir Kevin. I cannot thank you enough for this very helpful tutorials. Your video tutorials have been very helpful to me (especially this one). I almost cried on finding a good virtual machine but this is the easiest and most helpful for me. I watched all of your video tutorials but I forgot to subscribe but now I subscribed to your channel, most of your videos are recommended by youtube and from search. Thank you so much sir Kevin> Sending love from Philippines😊❤
Awesome Thank you!!
Adele probably has her own sandbox. : 0
Thanks for the scoop here. I primarily use VMWorkstation for testing, but didn't feel like going and getting another W10pro.
i dont have the option to turn on the windows sandbox its just not there (i find finaly it im from finland so my pc is in finnish and the the translation was very strange)
Thanks for this video Kevin! I'm guessing there isn't any way to update the Windows 10 version of Sandbox, is there? I'm currently running Windows 10 v20H2, and the Sandbox is running v2004. Does the Sandbox version get updated along with Windows 10 periodically, or is there another way to update it, or is it always just going to much older?
awesome, thank you.
This video is helpful
AWESOME !!
TYSM IT WORKED FOR ME +1 like
looks professional
So good!
kevin when you click on the start box, there is a weather widget. How do u have that
Thanks Kevin, will this use main system administrator permissions to install applications or anything can be installed? (in case current user does not have full control of the system to install anything) thanks once again
Good tips
Hi @Kevin Stratvert, I've noticed you have the indexer service turned off, what is your advice in this matter, should this be turned off on a Windows 10 PC with SSDs?
Thanks!
i didnt know this awsome
Thank you
I have been using Windows for ages, and I never knew this was an option. I even have another PC, that is mainly for my VMs.
Curious, if the Sandbox goes to sleep mode, is that the same as it closing, thus you lose everything you were working on?
Sleep mode is disabled in the sandbox. It'll stay active as long as you keep the sandbox open.
0:01 - Hi Kevin! 👋
6:16 - 753rd thumbs up from me! 👍
6:32 - Enjoyed watching it! ☺️ Bye and cheers!
is there a way to make it so that when you close Windows Sandbox your files won't be permanently deleted? or that can only be done with Hyper-V
In the WINDOWS FEATURES box, does the HYPER-V option have to be checked (in addition to the SANDBOX option)? Also, it's always OK to download a file and no harm will be done as long as it's not opened...correct?
also works on windows 11. thanks!
excellent
Thanks Joe cover Sandboxie
boss i am new fan of you,,, my country Bangladesh
(Many) Questions about Windows Sandbox popping out of my head:
If I use the sandbox, is there any protocol
1) ... which files are changed?
2) ... which registry keys are changed?
and
3) Can a programm inside the sandbox access
a) the internet or
b) my local network (fileserver)?
and
4) Can I change the default state of the sandbox, e.g. install my mailsoftware inside the sandbox?
or
5) execute a script when starting the sandbox to install a programm every time?
6) Can I use (certain) printers?
AND
7) Is there a FAQ Page anywhere for this great feature?
;-)
спасибо, интересно и познавательно 😎
Thanks for the valuable information! Can you cover the new Windows Kits.
Nicely explained but even though I am running Win Pro, when I go to the SANDBOX checkbox you discussed, it is grayed out stating my firmware does not support it. Is it the motherboard manufacturer I should check on to see if a firmware update is available for this feature?
Late reply, but if it says virtualization support is disabled in the firmware, you just need to open your bios and change the SVM setting. Shift clicking restart in windows, choose troubleshoot, advanced, and UEFI firmware settings to get into bios settings. When in bios, press ctrl + f to search, then type SVM, and enable it. Save and exit, and you can now enable sandbox.
awesome like!
Amazing
Hello Kevin, I don't know how to get the iso into the virtual machine. My question is, do think there will a time in the near future where a user can download a virtual machine that is ready to be used? Thanks
