The problem I have with Walter is not that he changes up the way you play the game, but it's that the game doesn't sufficiently reward you for learning how to play him.
I think he is rewarding
he rewards the player for knowing how to to pick fights.
@@DVGMedia1I believe most DST players prefer high risk high reward and low risk low reward characters, but imo Walter is like medium risk low reward
His most useful perk is his sanity gimmick, but it overall makes sanity much harder to deal with. Being immune to most insanity sources is kinda neat but they were never hard to with, so having your sanity possibly threatened anytime you pick a fight feels not worth it (though he's pretty good in a beefalo)
Besides, by the midgame you have stuff like the BQ Crown or even a Tam to make most insanity sources irrelevant

@@DVGMedia1 With what, QoL for the easiest stat to manage? I don't know about you, but that doesn't exactly compare very well to other characters' advantages. DST players don't pick characters based on how much they make you change your gameplay, they pick characters based on how powerful the advantages are.
Don't get me wrong, he's very interesting mechanics-wise, but that's not enough for most players.
well no most players pick characters just because they like them. Its why most players in the game are wendy and wigfrid. Not neccesarially the strongest characters that most people would say are the strongest. As for walter I think he fits more on how he kind of just makes things a bit easier than most. No need to tryhard but you can tryhard with him.
i know the argument of well if im not getting hit why not play wanda or wolfgang.
But thats not the point.
playing walter makes its so that the player can be more free with their choices in how they wish to explore the world.
hes probably not the best at rushing things because inherently rushing means throwing caution to the wind.

@@DVGMedia1 Sure, Wendy and Wigfrid may not be the absolute best, but they're in the top 5, along with Wolfgang, Wanda and WX-78. All of these characters provide upsides vastly superior to anything Walter can bring to the table.
Again, it's fine to play Walter, all the things you mentioned are interesting, it's just that most people like to do their best. and in order to truly do that they have to play a strong character. Not necessarily the best, because not everyone has the skillset to play Wanda, for example, but a strong character. And Walter is simply not a very strong character.

The only thing i hate about Walter is that he has unique quirks like telling stories at campfires and singing songs when eating tallbird eggs etc. AND MY FAV CHARACTER DOESNT DO THAT. I wish all other survivors had weird interactions with the world like this as well
I wish all the survivors had stuff they could do around the campfire. It would give players something to do at night besides just standing there and waiting for daytime.

Walter has been my favorite since day 1
I always use him when playing public servers since he benefits the group so much
Easy acess to meat/gold, Collecting the statues, making tents for wormwood, sanity regen that have synergy with wendy's station, can easily kill tentacles to help wurt, can aggro on koalefant for wigfrid, can stack woby and chester to be the team's pack mule, since he can 1 shoot birds wortox can get extra souls and wicker can get her bird hat fast
It's quite impressive how he can synergy with any survivor in different ways
We always loved using walter. I never understood why his downsides pushed players away from him when the solution is really easy, just stack up healing items and keep his hp full. Not worrying about sanity drain is one of the best perks he has

I love walter. Like you said at the end, he solves many problems and makes new ones. Characters like that have always been my favorite because they shake up the main gameplay. Awesome video ❤
Yeah, i often see others focusing more on how powerful a character/class is in all sorts of games, often claiming that said character/class is bad because they don't do anything that cannot be done by any other character/class, completely forgetting that there is more to a good character/class than just how viable they are, some of the best experiences i have ever had in a game revolved around playing in a way that made me thing differently about the entire game, i never thought that i would be exited to play walter, but here i am
Well, aybe not all sorts of games, just in some games, i also have been making datapacks that go with minecraft's origins mod, adding more things you could play as, you would be suprised how many times people claims that a less viable character with interesting stats is worse than a more viable but kinda boring character, tl:dr: just because a character is not good in every possible situation, does not mean that it is a bad character
Definitely want to see more characters analysis videos in the future considering how everyone’s likes to play/utilize character perks differently. Niche tip but you can agro followers onto something even when your slingshot is out of ammo.
Interesting, do you have more tips for walters slingshot uses?
My favourite thing about Walter is when you have freeze rounds and a Webber with sea striders you can easily kill crab king with little work only needing 15-30 sea striders and 1 stack of freeze rounds.
Since i started playing DST, I played as Walter a lot and soon he became my main, i love him and Woby soo much!
There's also the fact that he can tell stories at a campfire at night for a nice 10 sanity per min just for having a lit fire.
Also if he is near pig king he can easily farm birds for morsels and free gold for more ammo if you give said morsels to pig king.
Good speed and the ability to carry heavy things easily just for 3 monster meat to turn woby big and 1 more monster meat every once and a while is also pretty nice

@@janickchristiansen7108 well I can't think of much at the moment but it would good to keep in mind just how useful having ranged attacks really can be like being able to start combat with creatures like koalefants with ease.
Oh and since each craft gives you 10 ammo you can just use like 3 rocks and put 30 pebbles in your first slot to pretty much completely deal with enemies such as monkeys and frogs knocking items out of your inventory.
also if you do plan to farm birds for easy morsels (and gold if you're near pig king) keep in mind that with the feathers you get and some tentacle spots you can make a feather hat to increase bird spawns.
Something else I usually do is make bacon and eggs if we have a birdcage because you can easily get 3 of the ingredients just from the birds and then all you need is one piece of meat better than a morsel, even frog legs will work.

@@janickchristiansen7108oh also I guess it would be good to keep in mind that you can use the slingshot and Ctrl+f on butterflies for the nice 8 health (and 9 or so food) that butterfly wings provide and since they have a health of one you can just use pebbles for them unlike birds who need at least gold ammo to one-shot
yeah his sanity regen with his stories is nice even solo tho combine it with the lamb campfire for even more sanity
For me, Walter is like the old Woodie before his skill tree update, both of them have a lot of perks on their own but master none. Like the old Woodie, Walter doesn't shine in anything by himself, and most of his perks are useful in early game. But people forget that DST is in fact, a multiplayer game. Alone they have minimal impact but in multiplayer they have the ability to fulfill any role your team lacks. Walter can help Woodworm with his portable tent if no other healing items are nearby, he can kill the birds summoned by Wickerbottom without the need of sleeping them. He can heal any sanity at night without any additional cost and Woby is a decent mount and a free Chester, enough for early traveling between different biomes or basements. I remember playing a rush to kill for the ancient fuelweaver, and we could fight the three shadow chess pieces in day one thanks to his ability to mount faster with the statues. Sadly we didn't have the skill to kill the last one before everyone dies but potential is there, it just needs some love and maybe his skill tree will fix him.
I've been thinking about trying walter again. I was a noob the first time I tried him and if you don't prepare backup healing... you can end up in an insanity loop. In fact even if you prepare a tent you have to enter that tent in the small window where you have no shadows on you, which gets harder to find when you're playing in a large group. That looping aspect is still scary but I guess he's worth giving him another chance.

This is such a good analysis video!! You do a really good job illustrating where he excels and where he lacks, as well as how a player can best utilize him!
That was really cool and very unexpected - you even managed to spark an interest for a character in me, that I really disliked for quite a long time now. You always have a way to think around corners, and come to conclusions that most people are pretty oblivious about - mylsef included. I think it would be awesome to see you cover Wormwood, since he also plays very differently to most survivors (which you seem to enjoy) and he recently got his talent tree. The tree allows for some pretty sweet maneuvers, and I'm pretty sure we as a community haven't found a way to fully utilize it yet.
in my opinion, walter IS fun. but its pointless when he’s worse than like wilson. you’re doing too much work for some of his perks, and its not even worth it. and while the other half of his perks are easy to use, they barely benefit you.

One of my favorite parts is how underrated of an insanity farmer Walter is. All you have to do is be low on health and you're constantly going insane and STAYING insane, generating nightmare fuel at a genuinely ridiculous rate.
You did a great job covering walter i always avoided using him because i ended up being insane all the time but now i wanna give him a second chance and use him to the fullest
the problem with walter for me personally is the same as the one with woodie.
his kit is all over the place.
woodies wereforms after rework are all fun and cool , but none of them actually have anything to do with him being a lumberjack or even lucy (imo his most unique aspect).
same goes for walter, he has many small pros and cons that he has (which take away from his power budget) but they dont really tie in together like some other character have theirs do (warly is a very good example)
I feel with Woodie its fine because its pretty apparent he was designed to be the jack of all trades type of guy, but with Walter you cant even tell what he is supposed to be.
I love Walter, I love him a lot. My friend told me to not play as him when I first got the game and I didn't listen, and through the worse of times I stuck with him. Something interesting is that you can get jellybeans pretty early with a beef/woby and marble slingshot ammo. I tend to kill her for that healing item and it makes the world a thousand times easier after that. He's underrated and people get really lost on how you're meant to play him, but the difference between me and my friend when I'm Walter is totally interesting.

the reason people keep consistently rating my main walter so low on tier lists is because
they aren't wendy mains
I think it's mostly because they tend to focus more on what the character can offer the world versus what the world can offer the character
This made me warm up to walter a bit but I'll still love the easy to play characters like wendy and wolfgang and woodie the most
I love Walter but no I don’t think he’s underrated. The sanity drain for low health is just too much. I find myself having to instantly top off health or I’m stuck in an endless loop of nightmares cause the drain will bring you right back down.
Sure you can just get good but if your good enough to melee two nightmare breaks hitless every time you have no benefit for Walter. His sling is less dps and more expensive. Low sanity is a good thing cause you can just kill them and get fuel.
Beefalo is certainly the way to go, though I’m bad at taming them. Figures a Wendy main would have no trouble though 😅.

I fr dont see them played in lobbies outside the 200 days servers, while walter is still getting work done there by tryhards with dark swords
He's a support.
He's supposed to help the other survivors survive better, by giving free sanity every night, a cover fire during fights, scouting and storage with the cow dog, and requiring less recources by not going needing to worry about sanity.
And for all of these benfits, he gets destroyed by a single hit of damage.
Similarly to Wendy, who deals less damage, but brings Abigail to help with crowds and potentially tanking hits.
I think in Walter’s skill tree woby should get the ability to attack

As for Walter - I always liked him in concept, but there’s one thing that holds me back. It’s the ranged damage focus he has. I do not find ranged weapons fun to use in this game.
That might just be me, or might be a product of me playing on controller, but I can’t get them to feel good and I never really am interested in using them. So, for his character to have so much focus on doing ranged damage just feels like a waste to the way I play, so I normally avoid him for a character I can take full advantage of.
That being said, there’s nothing quite as awesome as having a rideable beefalo dog buddy from day 1 that doubles as a personal Chester… that boon might be big enough to overshadow everything else, haha. And that’s why I still play him occasionally.

Honestly Walter is one of my favorties.
I have taken out both the bearger and deerclops with just one other person who acts as bait while I load out marble rounds.
I also love exploring so being able to jump in and out of wormholes and explore theough the night without worrying about sanity is so nice.
Plus starting with an extra 9 slots due to Wobby?
Amazing.
He also helps with everyones sainty due to campire stories and he does really good with Willow because he can cook with her lighter.

Walter is probably the most cliché character because he’s literally a support character and needs a team which means PEOPLE LIKE ME CANT USE HIM BECUZ WE SOLO
Very nc video, change my view of Walter. Also since I'm a Beefalo enjoyer, this is perfect for him cuz it fixes everything that makes him hard to play around his Hp cuz beefalo can tank for you, except some elemental tick damage, seasonal damage and range attacks.
Walter is nice for like a nomadic run since he has 9 extra slots with Woby and if you manage to find Chester then you get even more slots and if doing said run in a team then he can be the mule. also cant wait to see what his skill tree gonna be.
not sure but i think he doesnt get the sanity penalty from the milkmaid hat so that combined with a tent for the sanity and health regen with no or quite little hunger drain
wait can you use woby as psuedo bone armor? you said if you use marble suit you can take 1 hit from things like ancient gaurdian, so if you wait 5 more secounds without getting hit could you get hit again and be fine? since woby doesent have hp

I would say Wigfrid is equally fun, if not in a different more mindless sort of way, for some of the same reasons. Wigfrid players get a lot of understandable flack for things like tanking and such, but she allows for a very mindless "destroy everything in your path" playstyle from the get go with her helm and battle spear. She also works great as a support player with her songs and armor. If you've never really played her before, I would recommend it.
tbh i personally really dislike walter not because of sanity loss when gets hurt, my main problems are facts that outside of slingshot and personal chester (about which i was constantly forgetting anyway, somehow) he has not much going for, and slingshot just sucks, even when u can cheese enemies with it, dps is just stupidly slow. as for beefalo to compensate for downsides... i never tamed beefalo and i will never do it, too much effort for too little gain and u need to maintain our even after taming. all my hate towards walter doesn't come from nowhere though, i at least tried him, unlike some other people i talked with that complain on him and never even tried to play as walter.

ok but the sanity drain is huge on that character. the first days of a playthrough you are having fun wondering how everybody trash talks walter, but then you get into a fight and come out with no resources left.
maybe if he got a buff, but right now making mistakes on that character is too punishing compared to the rest

Why do the characters I don't like to play for (Weber, Varley, Winona) have such cool voices, and the ones I like to play for (Walter, Wendy, WX) have THIS.
As a person with over 1000 hours i agree walter is underrated, u need knowledge about him and some skill you need to know what to do with him , the only problem i have with him are bees and woby being scared of the monsters basically she is just chester 2.0 combined with beefalo, and when i get hit like 4 times i turn into a nightmare fuel farm

Walter is a absolutely amazing when played by someone who knows a lot of the game mechanics and how to manage the many small issues or advantages that come with playing him. I'd say that someone who has survived 200 plus days in a previous playthrough and has explored the caves to a moderate degree would probably have a fair chance of succeeding with Walter. If you've never made it to day 100 solo before than I think you should hit that goal first before trying Walter as you still need some important baseline knowledge.
Walter might not rush bosses as easily but he can massively rush resources and can quickly setup multiple bases at a much accelerated rate. Use this to your advantage. Exploration is also really easy with him. Use mobs to fight other mobs and you should be great. Setup farms where mobs fight each other for resources. Also don't forget to setup a mole farm for infinite beef jerky and minerals.
Walter is the best when it comes with a slingshot. always good way to troll back the nightmares 😎

i think wormwood is next in line for a character people (atleast in the meta) dislike or disregard, but he plays a lot differently from any other character
problem with wormwood is surprisingly simple: u can't abuse pierogi anymore, and it seems like this is main reason why people hate him.
i personally like wormwood, his downsides are not too hard to negate, can easily manipulate sanity, items he craft are decent, regardless of solo or multi. also his skill tree made him more interesting. ability to summon salamanders as allies, being able to fart with sleepy spores. though most of things from skill tree are garbage, a filler.

@@gonetbh231 also honey bandages aren't as bad as people think. its cheap 30 healing that never spoils, 40 in stack.
another nice thing about wormwood is fact that certain fertilizers give him blooming, which gives nice speed bonus. sure, ut increases hunger drain, but who cares, for a game called "dont starve" food is surprisingly small issue.
another healing for wormwood that is often forgotten is compost. not one he can craft, just compost from composting bin, gives in total 8 hp over time, which may seem rather bad, but it's easy to farm and decent way if healing outside of combat
Wormwood will never be meta, but imo most of the community started liking him a lot more after Reap What You Sow (cuz of easy blooming and speed with composts) and further more after his skill tree

My opinion is that walter neds a buff to his firring speed of his slingshot
So it can match the character hit speed with his melee

I wish they could buff his pelets to do more damage and his firing speed to be much higher it makes the character much fun while making you not worried about sanity only about in combat
buff yo slingshot? i think u are insane. klei clearly hates any kind of ranged weapon, for seemingly no reason. im not saying i don't agree, but im saying buff to slingshot is last thing they would do

@@countsudoku6305imo they don't wanna buff ranged combat because it's isn't as interesting as melee combat. Having said that, having one character (aka Walter) decent at ranged combat doesn't seem like a bad idea
@@countsudoku6305 Klei hates ranged combat because it breaks literally everything in this game. All the enemies and bosses are balanced around melee combat, and the few enemies that have ranged attacks are ridiculously hard to dodge. That'd be like Team Cherry giving you a revolver in Hollow Knight.
If you kite well he has infinite sanity. Once people get good at kiting then they can’t use the hitting sanity loss argument anymore

I'm so awful at combat that the sanity being tied to damage is awful for me personally, but I love his character!
Walter is my fav character, exploring is so much fun, fights epic (yes no tanking but thats kinda the point and slingshots) and sanity yea what sanity. Gonna have to try that a beefalo always use woby. My team mates hates me as Walter because im always the one left alive lol.
And don't forget basing in 5 days with everything on hand and world completely explored
He was fun. I liked using him for a mostly nomadic playstyle solo. Plus, put eyebone in Woby, put Glommers flower in Chester, and walk around. Yo get to lead a parade! I think you forgot one thing about playing Walter that I remember- shut up yappy dog! When Woby starts yapping and doesn't stop it cen get really annoying really fast. I got this problem mostly on boats.
If you go with Wurt sometime, I would say one area she relly shines is another place most players don't look for fun- ocean! She can sustain herself on seaweed and keep a fish in her pocket for sanity.the only current issue is if you have merm followers and mine a rock they get fixated on a rock and walk towards it endlessly, even if they are getting in your way. Actually, as someone who loves follower playstyle the most, that's an issue with all followers rn, they are always in the way. Farming, sailing, base building ect,

I think that the biggest misunderstanding people have with Walter is the persistent notion that he's a character "for beginners." When that is the absolute OPPOSITE of the truth.
Apart from (MAYBE) Wes, Walter is the least beginner-friendly character in the game. He gets punished harder than any other character for making reckless mistakes and bad decisions. But for people that understand the ins and outs of this game and how Walter's tools affect things, they can make INCREDIBLE strides and live a life of luxury with the guy.
People try to make Walter something he's not. Take his slingshot, for instance. People complain that it's not as quick-firing as a Hambat or Tentacle Spike. It's not FOR that. It's for quick snipes, for avoiding aggro in multiplayer, for easy shadow monster slaying, easy prey hunting, and safe, defensive play or escapes. Making it into just a long-range Hambat would legitimately be busted.
While I do admit he could stand to be punished a little less from taking damage, the idea is to incentivize playing around his tools and playing smarter, which is a good thing. If someone wants to mindlessly face-tank everything, they can play Wolfgang or Wigfrid. Walter is the character for putting more thought into things and teaching players not to panic if things don't go according to plan.
I believe a lot of Walter's more weird problem's will be helped with the fact that every character will get a Skill Tree now, cause he is like many people point out, has a lot of random skills just thrown together like a modded character for dst, at his base, Walter is meant to be a ranged character, yet isn't the best damage wise for ranged with how slow his attacks are, not only that he for some reason just has a dog, that is just Oto Von Chesterfield, and a Beefalo mashed together, and has the same cooking as Warly and Willow? Ok one is a fire witch, and the other is a chef, so why can this child in the boy scouts cook as fast as them? And why can he just gain sanity from being around trees? Why don't other characters like Woodie have this perk as well? NOW this isn't me saying Walter is bad, but just the fact he doesn't really have a dedicated role right now, he was supposed to be this ranged character archetype, but then he became a hound master? With a dog that just kinda exists? Now I like Wobby it's a cute hound, but why does this character just have so many weird upsides and downsides? They could have given him legitimate and interesting downsides for his role as the ranged character but they just put 2x damage from bee, can't gain or lose sanity from clothes, and one that is very interesting for a ranged archetype, the damage to sanity when hit, he just need's something, and with the possible expansion of his role to his skill tree, focusing on ONE of these archetypes, and other lines that will give others what they want from this forgettable character, A Hound master skill tree, A Ranged skill tree, and a Boy Scout skill tree
For me the whole sanity being tied to health thing isn’t really the problem. Infact I love weaknesses that make me play in a different way. However what instead bothers me is how badly focused walters upsides are. For one his slingshot:
While it does have uses, it is much weaker than just using normal weapons. Or to be more specific it’s much more situational. For Bosses like Bearger it works well but there are far to many bosses where I am either doing about as well as I would have with normal weapons (if I’m using the strongest damage options), or worse. That coupled with its very bad dps makes it feel like an afterthought, which it really shouldn’t be and as for the utility rounds, You never really need to get agro off of something since 9 times out of 10 you can just walk away from creatures, which makes the poop rounds feel like shit (which I guess fits the theme). the ice rounds are about as useful as an Ice staff (aka not very) and the slow rounds are very situational and most of the time do nothing.
Then there is Wobby. Wobby is kind of a shit beefalo so you’ll mostly ignore that side of her, but a free chest at the start of the game is nice.
The rest of his perks are so small I won’t even bother mentioning them.
Basically what I’m saying is that Walter doesn’t really feel like he can offer experienced players much. The Slingshot is almost never better (or even just as good) as normal combat so why bother with it if you’re already good at fighting normally. Wobby doesn’t add anything and the other perks are to minor or don’t fit with the characters other attributes. Like why does he get double the stats from sleeping? Once you’re good enough at the game sleeping is mostly redundant because it will almost always be better to just get healing through other ways. Sleeping is more so helpful for beginners, yet Walters main weakness is extremely beginner unfriendly, making him a poor choice for players who would appreciate better sleeping perks.
Basically Walter doesn’t give the player anything for playing him.
Hmm. I think every single one of the things you mentioned were things that I actually don't take issue with while playing Walter. I actually like that his slingshot isn't overpowered compared to the regular weapons because it offers a way to skip certain progressions that other characters have to do, and I think that Woby is useful enough, even if she isn't massively useful past the midgame.
Walter's advantage for cooking and tent sleeping is insanely undervalued for general comfort and maybe surprisingly for ruins living.
Walter is maybe one of the only characters that can truly LIVE underground. He may need a beefalo to help out, but by that point, Walter is one of the strongest characters in the game for living underground. Tents protect you from earthquakes, sleeping fully restores health and sanity when you have an infinite supply of lichen, and you also can stop bishop and rook aggro with slingshot ammo. Most notably, he doesn't suffer from the constant -6.6 sanity drain/min that every other survivor suffer from.
I think we've all bought in too far into meta gameplay, and we think that because something doesn't fit neatly into the top of a tier list, it is not fun to play as a character. I agree Walter will never be able to beat Ancient Fuelweaver or Bee Queen without the cheese, but he offers compelling gameplay precisely because he has the most unique tools available, to create new solutions for problems that everyone else has already "solved".

I am a main Willow (Yes we are real) and I find fun to play Walter, he have really interesting mechanics and it made me tame more Beefalos than usual
Still , there are more willow mains than Walter mains
for the 30 hours i have on the game i played willow most of the time. i js like starting the game with a lighter lol

Dst players when a character isn't capable of demolishing bosses in two seconds or farm infinite amounts of resources out of thin air (it's a flawed character and needs a rework 😤)

The only real problem with walter is the slingshot, if he did more flat damage (like enough to kill a bunny or a bird with one round since he spawns) he can be one of the best characters, I have no proof but neither doubt
i think walter could be good if the slingshot were more viable. rock or gold ammo seems cheap, but it takes so many shots to kill small mobs. i feel like he should be able to 1 shot spiders or catcoons, cause using melee is so much more of a risk

I also hate how his -50% reduce to hunger gain from food, but I kinda fix it by eating a soul with it cuz it fixes it in a way. Like eat 1 meatball + soul, eat healing food and soul, and vise versa. I feel like eating something with a soul is like what your supposed to do with Wortox anyways lol.
na, the sanity loss while fighting is wayyy worse than the passive one. being insane while exploring isnt bad, you just kill the nightmares. but being insane while fighting f.ex. deerclops ist really bad. also, there are some bosses you have to tank or its way better to tank them. bee queen and deerclops are some examples. but i guess woby is cute
but if you are properly tanking with strong armor it basically ends up being the same.
only time its worse is when you use logsuits or helmets.
Honestly one of my biggest problems with Walter is that his sanity effects feel incredibly punishing for what his upsides are.
Like yeah, he gets extra sanity from sleeping, but he loses the ability to use the easiest form of sanity restoration in the game, clothing items. (Especially the tam) Like every other way he can regain sanity is either locked behind mid/late game, or is so dang weak, it feels more like a quirk than a perk. Like his tree sanity regen, for instance.
Like WX makes rain absolutely crippling (kinda feels as bad as Walter's downside) but in exchange, you can have 40% added movement speed and 275 health at the same time. Walter... has a slingshot... and a slightly better chester. Not a very powerful upside in exchange for making taking damage so damn punishing.
If you think about it walter and wx basically start with the same bonuses.
Wx and most other characters tend to focus on what they can offer the world vs what the world can offer them. Hence why early in the video most people like to compare survivors to what they can or can't do.
I guess that's important but its also based on the player.
I'm not a rusher type of player a player that like to see results fast.
And walter doesn't fit within that mindset because inherently that playstyle has risk that walter can't deal with.
@@DVGMedia1 i guess fair enough, Walter is one of the best early game characters, but he really doesn't have like anything else. Once you get past early game (which characters like Wigfrid and Wendy already beat him in imo) he only gets worse since his downsides stay just as crippling while his upsides start to fall behind and even get outclassed in most cases.
Ig tbf, so long as you just avoid combat, he's not all that bad, but I'd personally like him to have a bit more to make him stand out more than "best at sleeping."
I’ve never played Walter (I play Wilson most of the time and I play wendy sometimes if I play with friends) but man this video made me not want to try this character lol none of his upsides are worth the downsides and using tents is kind of a waste of time. Being comfortable with being low sanity is something all players should strive to be, but making a a couple mistakes and getting dropped 100 sanity for it in a boss fight is too much for most players. He doesn’t do extra damage, he doesn’t provide very much for other players, his slingshot not only requires resources but also inventory slots which isn’t a big problem when wondering around given you have a personal Chester but in a boss fight using a mag you may have to give some things up for inventory space or throw it on the ground nearby
I think he’s definitely unique though and i can only respect people who are good at “weird” or niche characters.
He provides alot of base game utility only really loose big chunks of sanity if not wearing armor or his hat. In fact he loses the same amount of sanity the player would by tanking hits.
He is definitely not an easy character but playing him does provide lots of freedom.
Im biased. But do Wurt. It blows my mind that she doesnt get the praise she deserves. Only downside i can see with her is pig king. But if your playing with others thats not an issue.

@@countsudoku6305 not at all. she has the ability to keep fish in her inventory for 4 days. that means she can catch ice bream and summer fish. SO she can completely ignore all seasons. Spring she doesnt need to worry about because wetness doesnt effect her sanity, she just gets cold. but if you have sun fish it doesnt matter. Putting marsh down for bosses makes bosses super easy. Dragon pies give her 100 hunger and 40 hp which is ridiculous. also boat adventuring has no risks to her.

Why did they give wigfrid, the easiest character, a skill tree before Walter? He needs it most. Also I see your points of taking beefs and using special rounds, and like yeah I could waste time doing that… but I could just play Wolfgang or even Maxwell if I didn’t want to go insane and wanted to do good damage..
