  • A proper update on the PetrolBlog 406 Coupé. The list of things to complete is getting shorter. Contains footage of a man with reasonable* intelligence wrestling with an oil filter.

I wouldn't worry about any perceived muppetry, you certainly have a great style. Anyone who can get away with saying how "The hand job was ineffective" (11:34) without a hint of smirk is a skilled presenter in my book. Glad to see this car is coming together nicely, and thanks for keeping the videos up, I know it ain't easy but they are really fun to watch !

Those pipe cutters are brilliant little tools. They leave a really nice chamfer on the cut.

While rambling on, you managed to turn the oil filter 15 times without making progress.
    Job well done.

Was it that many? I should have edited it down to single figures. Oh well.

In the olden days rust was what killed cars. Now it's parts like a belt tensioner unobtainium... I always liked the 406 coupé so keep up the good work! (Also I applied for a PetrolBlog membership just now 😊)

I'm pleased my suggestion worked. Judging by the squeak when it was undone, the filter was put on without the seal being lubricated. The tools you already had would have done the job if the previous filter had been put on correctly. But sometimes extreme problems require extreme solutions..
Glad things have progressed - told you it was a game of two halves!
(Irwin, if you are watching, I'm a big fan of your bolt extractors, and that new large set looks rather nice...)

You were right about it being a game of two halves, Clive. At the end of the day, the gaffer did us proud. Everybody gave 110%.

Love the channel! Coincidentally i've bought a 1998 406 Coupe V6 automatic in very similar condition at auction last year. Same color as well! No MOT (the Dutch equilavent of it), broken front bumper, leaky power steering lines, and in neglected state overall. Fun to follow along with your repair progress!

@@Petrolblog Thanks! I actually ran into something weird. The passenger side wheel bearing was shot so I replaced it. Then i found out the brake caliper was stuck so I had that overhauled. But now when I install it, the rotor is off-centre to the brake caliper and it actually scrapes the caliper on the inside. Do you know if there is supposed to be a spacer or something between the caliper and the steering knuckle?

    • @KoenOnbekend
      @KoenOnbekend 2 роки тому

@@Petrolblog Taking a closer look I think the steering knuckle actually got bent a bit in the hydraulic press where the upper bolt of the caliper attaches

Kitchen tips with Rich. You can roast your tomatoes. They make a really good pasta sauce. Pack them into a ceramic dish, slather on some olive oil, garlic and salt and roast in a hot oven for a short time. Add some sliced peppers for some variety in your textures and chillis if you want a zing.
And Lakeland does something similar to the Vise-Grip for taking the lids off jars. Useful for the weak, the ageing and the disabled.
Also, William Blake. Not a Kitchen tip. I'd add Pauline Blake to my list of famous Blakes but unless you're into running in Cambridge she's probably not that famous. She's world famous here though.

'In the kitchen with Rich' would be a great Sunday morning TV show. I don't watch television during the day, but I would if you were sharing cookery trips and your favourite products from Lakeland Plastics. Showing my age with the reference to 'Plastics'.
William Blake! There was a long pause (edited out), when I was trying to remember his name. All I could think of was Richard Ashcroft and his William Blake-inspired lyrics in History.
      I digress...

In the Kitchen with Rich would just be 20 minutes of me spilling things and swearing at porridge. Out of focus. With crappy sound. And someone else would have to do the washing up.

Though you had to get under the car at least you have some access to use tools to release that filter. The one on the Megane is clearly visible from above but it's sort of recessed in a way that makes it difficult to lever at it with tools.

To all owners of the older (194ps) 406 V6 model: Please take off the air hose that connects with the throttle body and remove the metal ring that is inside of it. It's 2022 and I am still discovering 406's with the ring inside the hose. This ring is known to come lose and block the valve of your throttle body and blocking you from lifting the throttle while driving.
