I've been watching your videos for over two months now. Just started my first "custom" and everything you've told me that could happen HAS happened. The pre-paint anxiety was REAL and prepping a shoe is literally every chore you've ever done in life that you never wanted to do. Thank you for the path.
The most important tip was Don’t rush when you’re painting and waiting for them to dry. I customized shoes Yesterday for the first time and used a hair dryer to dry them in 5 minutes and they just peeled off. Just because it looks and feels dry the next layer will just make it wet again and make it peel off. I did them again and waited at least 15 minutes between layers and there was a big difference . The color looked better and It felt more Solid.
This also is a problem when you aren't used to the paint/material; learning how it reacts to coats and the time needed to really let it settle down before working on it more avoid so many headaches in the future...
it dont matter how you dry it .you have to use acetone to clean the paint and sealer off that was alresdy on the shoe. .. then when your done painting you have to use a finisher to seal the paint
@@brianlip7290 what do u think the best dealers are ? If u know. I don’t wanna spend the $39 on the Angelus sealer when I can get Home Depot fabric sealer for like $11

The way I've ALWAYS done commission turn around projections is: how long do you think it's gonna take you to do it? Tell your client you can't promise less than triple your projection, but it usually takes about double. So, if you think it's gonna take you one to two weeks, say "I can't promise anything sooner than 4-6 weeks, but it's usually only 2-3." This gives you PLENTY of buffer for if you need to order more paint, start-over from scratch, paint's drying slowly because it's a particularly wet week, whatever else; but means that you'll most frequently be able to give your client the product even sooner than they're hoping/expecting.
Ayyyyeeee that’s the first thing I made when I started making customs too!! It’s great cuz once you start wearing your own product out, people will ask you where you got them and you can tell them you made them and they might ask you to make them something. It’s a great way to start

I’m about to start some custom Air Force ones, but I’ve never done something on that material. I’m wondering if the Angelus paint pens would work? If anyone’s tried that I’m curious
i don’t like them :/ the tip spilts quite easily in my opinion, i’m upset about the posca pens, would they work better on top of a base of angelus paint?
I'm finishing up a pair of customs for my first buyer! Thing is...it took me over a year to do one pair because I'm a perfectionist. And they're not any old custom/basic shoes, they're super detailed with intricate designs and complex art. No stencils, nothing to aid my art, just the purity of the skill in my hand. How do we speed things up and become more efficient?
A good idea is to create a time frame to work on your project. For example, you could work on it for two hours every week, or whatever you want. What I used to do for things like that is I worked on it hours on end one day, then I tell myself I did enough work to last a while then never get back to my project. I also recommend working a couple times a week for shorter amounts of time rather than 1 or 2 amounts a week for more than an hour. It can make you get bored of whatever your working on.Hope this helped :)
I haven't done a pair of Air Force ones in 25 years. I only done one pair but back then we use acetone to take off the waxy layer and use acrylic paint. I'm assuming now with acrylic leather paint there's no need to use acetone? Times sure have changed! Great video BTW!
I took the paint off of the soles of my white leather pumas mistakenly with 91% alcohol from instructions from another video and I'm devastated!!! Those were my faves!! They look similar to lsf
Hi Dillon from the UK, great channel - the most concise one on YT :) Conc. painting different materials & additives; how would you do a Rainbow Fade on some AM IVO, the toebox & some of the sides is mesh & the toefront, lace section and paneling is leather. So would be spraying across 2 different materials
For something like that I would lay down the base colors using the appropriate mediums such as 2soft on the mesh. Then when doing the actual blend I would just paint the whole thing with the leather paint no additives
Found a lot of this very viable to my own work , Turning my skills into a buisness , customizing has been an interest/hobby of mine ever since 8th grade , stoked ash.

Hello! Any tips on how to strip a old color of paint off a pair of airforce ones that I previously painted in areas of red with a different color? Should I sand the areas ot paint over it with a light gray before I lay down the new color? Thanks
I can’t say forsure as I haven’t seen a leather paint version in the past.. other renditions I’ve seen people do where they create something similar aren’t wearable pieces just for display
I have the same question! With some synthetics being made with petroleum, will acrylic stick to the surface? Also the acetone removal technique could possibly be disastrous i assume... searching for answers on this one and so far nothing
@@jeansegarra2432 well I googled it and it says acrylic paints work well. Acrylic has plastic in it and plastic lasts. I'm not sure what sort of paint angelus paint is? Everybody swears by it by I think good acrylic would work just as well. Good luck with your painting 🙂
If you could answer this question I’d appreciate it. I seen your other Vid about a toothpick painting, method. But on this one your talking about paint brushes, Which would make a better color/appearance result to if I were to paint a shoe?
Have you tried uv reactive paint? What’s the process of that? Do you have to put a coat on after you’re done? Or add any additive to that paint? I’ve never done this and I want to do it as a birthday present
I started out just painting something as a gift for someone on low cut all black Van's, and I'd like to say that they turned out pretty well. I've been wanting to start selling custom shoes but I dont know how to get started. Any suggestions?
Dillon, Which do you prefer, brush painting or airbrushing? Which one gives you the betters results? I am a newbie and don't know much about either but I would love to hear your thoughts?
FolkArt acrylic paint ($1.69ish each) with Golden GAC 900 textile medium (about $10) Angelus Acrylic Finisher (I think $7ish?) And finally Angulus Stain and water repellent ($10ish) ^ these are great on canvas shoes, can be used on leather but invest in the Angelus leather paints for sure!
Can I use Angelus on Fabric Shoes K-Swiss Tubes? I went in Ross on sale for $20 and had to get them and want to do a black and gold theme colors of Colorado Buffaloes. Plus they are a great walking billboard as you say in most of your videos.

Hello! Any tips on how to strip a old color of paint off a pair of airforce ones that I previously painted in areas of red with a different color? Should I sand the areas ot paint over it with a light gray before I lay down the new color? Thanks
I would acetone all the paint off. Then depending what color you plan to make em, light grey could be a good option to hide some of the blemishes
Great i will give that a try. THANKS!@DeJesusCustomFootwear
What kind of paint would I use for vans?
i want some vanta black paint for my air forces, what brand should i go for?
I can’t say forsure as I haven’t seen a leather paint version in the past.. other renditions I’ve seen people do where they create something similar aren’t wearable pieces just for display
Perfect video. Thanks for sharing your experience!
1000x thanks my guy, I'm currently thinking about being a " sneaker artist " as well ,so your tips really helped me out
Hi, the ousole of a Nike AF1 is considered as Hard too ? (so Hard product too ?)
I wouldn’t recommend painting outsoles
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear thx
I'm trying to paint some Gamma Forces. What additive would you should I use?
Hello! What spray can I use to custom leather? Could it be Montana Gold spray, for example?
Can I use white vinegar as an alternative to the preparer and deglazer??? Help lol
I would just use acetone or deglazer. You can pick it up at any local hardware store
I honestly love your crucifix. Sentimental.
Thank you!
Thanks bro I’m gonna do some custom Atl colors to match my hawks jersey so wish me luck guys and thanks for tips bro!💯
hey.
can you tell me pleace why the posca marker is not good? thank u!!!
In my opinion specifically on leather they’re much more likely to crack
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear ho thank u, I just bought a set ...😑😅Good to know before
What paint is good for synthetic leathers, please?
I don’t use a toothpick for the whole shoe, just for super tiny details!
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear thanks bro frfr I was just looking at your vids last night😂
Can we paint on 1st copy of nike sneakers using angelus paints
What’s 1st copy mean?
Im only 14 but im rlly good at art. Im about to customize my first Nike Air Force 1 shoes and this video really helped get me started!
Have you tried uv reactive paint? What’s the process of that? Do you have to put a coat on after you’re done? Or add any additive to that paint? I’ve never done this and I want to do it as a birthday present
Yea you can purchase pigments from solarcolordust.com and add those to angelus neutral paint which is colorless
I started out just painting something as a gift for someone on low cut all black Van's, and I'd like to say that they turned out pretty well. I've been wanting to start selling custom shoes but I dont know how to get started. Any suggestions?
Etsy is a great place to start! But keep doing shoes for friends and family, get as much practice in as possible
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear Thank you so much! This is the first video I've seen of yours but definetly subscribing for the future
Sir. What kind of permanent color should we use for synthetic material?
Dillon,
Which do you prefer, brush painting or airbrushing? Which one gives you the betters results? I am a newbie and don't know much about either but I would love to hear your thoughts?
Airbrushing will always yield cleaner results. I airbrush a large majority of the time. Great question though
Hello I have a question for you, I am trying to find a good rose gold paint to paint a leather dress shoe, please help?
Yeah angelus makes a dope rose gold pearlescent paint!
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear thank you very much.
FolkArt acrylic paint ($1.69ish each) with Golden GAC 900 textile medium (about $10) Angelus Acrylic Finisher (I think $7ish?) And finally Angulus Stain and water repellent ($10ish)
^ these are great on canvas shoes, can be used on leather but invest in the Angelus leather paints for sure!
Yup that’ll get you going! You’ll see a huge quality jump when moving up to the angelus though 😎
this was so helpful!!!, I'm trying to customize shoes for my boyfriends birthday
Good luck!
I just today did my first custom. I used sharpie, just to see how it went. Next time ill definetely use paint.
🙌🏽
I get a air Jordan 6 Carmine from the goat and a chip of Black paint is missing from around the air bubble how do I paint it?
Can I use Angelus on Fabric Shoes K-Swiss Tubes? I went in Ross on sale for $20 and had to get them and want to do a black and gold theme colors of Colorado Buffaloes. Plus they are a great walking billboard as you say in most of your videos.
