It is interesting just how easy maintaining a carbon blade is. Thank you for this.

@@darylbrenton4839 Yeah it’s really not that much work. I think people get way too concerned about rust, water, etc. ALL the old implements were natural materials leather, cotton, steel, and they all got soaked and people just maintained them, it’s as simple as that. Thanks for watching!

I accidentally watched one of your videos a second time, and realised that I had forgotten a lot of it, because there is so much information packed into them. So, I'm watching all of them a second time. What I realised from watching this one again, is that maintenance can be so easy, and doesn't need to cost a lot. I had gained the impression that sharpening knives needed diamond stones of varying grits, 2 strops of differing compounds, and a water cooled grinding stone for proper sharpening technique. Luckily, a financial squeeze stopped from buying some expensive gear before watching this.
Watching Old South Forge videos also helped me realise that expensive grinders aren't necessary for making knives. They may be helpful for production work, and powered, water cooled grinders may make things quicker, but you don't have to spend a fortune in order to do stuff.

@@darylbrenton4839 I’m honored you’re watching through them again, and really glad they are still beneficial. Yes, it can be as cheap as a free river stone! Honestly, its all about knowing how materials interact, and the geometry of the convex edge. Once in the Amazon, one of the locals had an extremely dull machete. I used the diamond file on my leather-man, and then rubbed river clay into my canvas pants and stropped it to razor sharp. They couldn’t believe it.

@@MarsFireForge You mean, you didn't go to Amazon and buy sharpening gear? Seriously, if your videos weren't worth it, I wouldn't watch them again. I have watched a couple of them more than that. I am struggling to get the tip of my knife to cut rope. I've thinned the tip down and it still doesn't cut. I suspect that I will have to redo the convex edge and make it wider there, as it cuts well about 1/3 of the way back from the tip.
