Hand Forged Bowie Knife
This little 9” overall Bowie knife comes in at exactly 6oz and is a super effective cutter for all sorts of scenarios. EDC, Bushcraft, Defense, it’s a versatile blade with a wide variety of uses. As always it’s expertly heat treated, able to split nails without turning the blade, and properly convex ground, able to cut a free falling piece of paper out of the air. With a 4.5” blade and handle, it’s perfectly balanced and comes in a compact size you can carry with you every day.

    I’m gonna try and put a convex edge on my Esee cr2.5 with my Falkniven dc3 I’m hoping i can do it right😂

    • @MarsFireForge
      @MarsFireForge 50 хвилин тому

      @@jaredleland6667 Hey Jared! If you don’t , mind I’ll make a suggestion here. The DC3 is a great stone, and while you’ll be able to use it to sharpen a convex edge, it won’t work well for establishing a convex edge. If you want to put one on your ESEE I’d say, get 50, 100, 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000 grit sand paper and something soft to place them on (mouse pad is idea). Lube that 50 grit (or 60 or whatever you have) up with wd50 and then start gently, but firmly “sharpening” the knife, BUT do it right ABOVE the relief edge. SO you won’t actually be taking any steal off the edge at all right now. All you’re going to be doing is knocking off the angle where the knife transitions from the full flat grind to the cutting edge. You’re looking to soften the transition from the full flat to the cutting edge which will establish your convex edge and also get rid of a bunch of unneeded steel that hinders cutting. Once you’ve done that, do the same with the 100 with more pressure, and then the same with the 220. At this point you should start to see a shiny convex edge appearing, and that polished steel should cover say 1/4” or so from the edge. so, essentially what was just a tiny edge bevel that was straight has now transformed into a 1/4” edge bevel that is conveyed. Once that’s established, hit the whole shiny part with a sharpie and start into the 400 grit, ensuring that you’re evenly removing the sharpie as you sharpen the blade on the paper. Keep doing that up to 1000 and then polish and you’ll have a world-class convex edge. I did it to my Cold Steel Espada and it completely changed the blade, it’s a fantastic cutter now. Any questions just comment!

    Great knife, enthusiastic maker. I think you are onto a great design of blade, hilt, and sheath. Another benefit of convex edge geometry, is that it can peel an orange without cutting into the flesh. It just pushes the peel and pith aside. I am impressed with your dedication to your craft. Keep it up.

      @@darylbrenton4839 yeah its interesting how it works. I always picture the bow of a boat “cutting” through the water. That shape displaces the water in such a way that allows the ship to travel through the water with the least resistance. The same convex shape is apparent in animals that have to resist currents also, like muscles or clams. In fact I believe the word for convex grind in Japanese is “hamagari” which is the word for clam shell…..think I head Lynn Thompson say that on one of his old Proof videos like back in ‘08. Anyway I believe it’s the best shape for cutting through a material with minimal resistance, as the material is directed away from the blade rather than rubbing up against the side of the blade. Super cool you converted your scandis , what did you use to do that? Thanks for the interaction and the comments I appreciate it!

I tinker making a few knives and I have learnt a lot from your videos, and when I get some time to beat out some new ones, I will try to copy one of your knives. I was wondering if you ever planned to make a video showing the various steps in making a single knife? Something which shows how much time and effort goes into making a custom knife? Then perhaps people wouldn't make irritating comparisons to commercial knives. Kudos for how you handled the previous one. You just want to make sure it’s veg tanned and it doesn’t necessarily have to be 8oz it could be less. You can search for leather “off cuts” and get discounted remnants of leather also. A strop is a great idea, a long clear section of leather with a little mother’s mag polish in the fibers will make your knife MEGA sharp.

      @@RobertoBarrale-od6kf that’s a great point it’s not just the convex edge in this demonstration the recurve plays a role too.

    WOW. Can’t deny this demonstration of the practical difference between just a “sharp edge” and a properly done convex edge… A good knife is a lot more than just sharpened metal! Another good one, Mars Fire.

    I was fortunate enough to get one of Sean's knives. I absolutely love it. It is my go-to blade. It is now my edc knife. The blade itself and the carry system both fit into my world perfectly.

    Having worked with Sean, and seen his blades in action, they are unparalleled in performance. The quality of the blade for the money is unheard of in the knife industry. Best fixed blade you can get your hands on for the money, maybe even ever🫡

    What grit stone/sandpaper do you recommend?

    • @MarsFireForge
      @MarsFireForge 4 місяці тому

      Hey!! When I really doing a thorough sharpen I will do 220, 400, 600, 1000 (and that’s kind of hasty but that’s what I do) 400 would be a good maintaining paper to repair minor dings and also leave a nice sharp edge. Then for the stone use a fine Arkansas stone.
