    To anyone who is wondering, this version is made from piano roll which Joplin himself played and recorded. This is as close as you will ever hear how the king of ragtime played.

      One theory is that he had to play this one too fast to get it to fit on a piano roll.

    Just a little fact, Magnetic Rag was Scott Joplin’s last piece he ever made, about a year later he was admitted to essentially an asylum due to Syphilis and died 2 years after that. It is assumed that due to the Syphilis, this is why Magnetic Rag doesn’t match any of his other rags due to the insanity that was creeping up on him. Nevertheless, my favorite rags from him are Original and Magnetic, essentially the two bookends of his works!

      Even if it's possible, it's not certain that Scott Joplin played these octaves like that when he cut this piano roll. At that time, it was very common for the roll to be modified by the company after the pianist had cut it to correct mistakes and add some "embellishments". That makes several rolls impossible to play without some arrangements.

    I know this is from the composer himself, but...why is there minimal use of nuances and why does it sound so mechanical? I'm no expert on this, however. Perhaps piano rolls are not a faithful reproduction of his playing style? Or perhaps it was his illness?

    • @IsraelCube
      @IsraelCube 6 років тому +4

      Santosificationable this was his last song he made and at this time he was, as you mentioned, very ill. So, it is understood that this one wasn’t like any of the others he made due to this fact. Piano Rolls should be a faithful reproduction due to the fact it’s just a recording of what the piano played.

      Both. Piano rolls recordings were always edited to match the generic pianola player mechanical capabilities (eg. limited key range / octaves), most pianolas have 65 notes, or a little over five octaves. B) Joplin had dificulties with reading a sheet and coordinating during a performance because of the neuro-degenerative state of his syphilis affection. So he recalled and improvised a new version.
