  • That's Rock. Nonconformist freedom of expression; the very same powerful rhythm to which our heart beats, smiling straightaway; intriguing and biting energy that induces to dance and sing; intelligent irony that makes dream with a thrill of hope; fire in the life theater which remembers the rhythms of creation; evasion and reflection that goes beyond the materialism; rebellion provocation laughter anger poetry, the shout in the soul of each one, with complexity of an accurate sound by a simple musical structure ... and a superlative voice that enters overbearingly, gently into the veins: stay tuned.

Well, that makes me really glad and I agree! It's amazing how from few elements can be formed a crystal so luminescent and sparkling ... with the purity of simplicity. And it's work as geniuses.
My heartfelt thanks, dear Susan, know, you are who inspires others, with your refined poetry of the images.

This live performance and another NYC one has so much more distortion than some performed live in Europe. The sound abroad was cleaner, the impersonation of an American less complimentary, and they ROCKED this song harder. If I didn’t live in the USA I’d be deathly afraid of this country. I have lived in another country which helped me “see” the arrogance some have in the USA. I guess if you are going to fear the USA it’s better to live in it than to be helpless whenever the USA makes decisions that affect the world. The USA is a vast country with a lot of acreage and opinions and accents and beliefs. We are a giant melting pot of many cultures and this is the outcome.

For me this is the style of Bowie closer to his essence of Rocker: funny transgression, original thought-provoker, great sound and voice, and not least his ability to stand on stage by astounding actor as really is, nailing the amazement of the audience in a growing admiration, until last frame, through his magnetic force.
A Rock-song terribly "bowiean", ha ha. Thank you so much, sweet Carol.

An excellent version also in my opinion, probably the best for all combinations at the top that also you've mentioned. A very happy too combination with Adrian Belew, a "monster" of artist: only 19 albums as a solo artist, but difficult count those in partnership with other greats, including King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Paul Simon, NIN, Joe Cocker, etc... Also, for me he's a source of sympathy only to look him at the scene.
Thank you very much, my dear Cathy.

I think that America is a huge theater of ferments and initiatives, of dreams and contradictions, a mirror of many ethnicities and cultures mostly young compared to Asian or European continent. Bowie did not wanted to paint a portrait of the American people, but ironically may have wished to indicate a common place on which the Americans themselves (the same ironically) can smile: an astonishing Rock was born, that, like you, I particularly like. Thank you dear Juli.

They are effects of "stridor", deliberately created on this piece to highlight the contradictions (and the irony) implicit in the message of the song. The lead guitar is the excellent Reeves Gabrels, who played many years with Bowie as well as with other great artists.
