Honestly, I like Nemona because of the Rivals that take the type weaker starter. She is one of the ones that make sense. The only other one being Bianca but that is just because of how the game is set up for her. Nemona isn't challenged, so by taking a weaker starter she puts herself as a disadvantage which in turn would make the battle harder and thus more challenging.
She's still annoying af. I'd rather have a rival that literally assaults us than the "goody two shoes" that Hop and Nemona are. Hop just never shuts the fuck up about type match-ups and Nemona has some weird fetish for battling us. I'd very much take Red's "..." as a rival over the recent rivals.
Didn't Nemona actually beat the gym challenge before you even enrolled at the school and was just doing it again just because she wanted to rival you? She kept saying already a champion and that she wasn't using her heavy hitters on you until the late game.
@@o_brown74 she was battling the gyms again, maybe not for the gym challenge but she was challenging the gyms again. She even declines battling the player once because she built a team for the gym leader specifically.
The XY rivals actually represent different types of Pokémon players. Shauna is the casual player who just wants to enjoy the adventure. Tierno is the challenge player who wants to use themed teams. Trevor is the completionist, who wants to catch them all. And Serena/Calem is the combat focused player, who wants to be competitive.
This! I love this game because it is the best game in my opinion to replay with all these focuses. No matter which kind of trainer you are, you have a rival.
Honestly due to my catching mindset, I found Trevor to be a more compelling rival than Tierno or Shauna. Honestly I wish we had more rivals that focus on the catching side of pokemon rather than the battling or the caring side,
Missed N so i'll share a fun fact about him: His text moves faster than any other characters' because he talks very quickly which is supported by a line from cheren telling him "Slow down. You talk too fast."
He also uses the most Pokémon species amongst all of his battles compared to any other rival, since he always uses the local Pokémon whenever you battle him before his castle, and even then, he only reuses one evolution line.
Never put much thought into it but I think Hugh is the perfect balance of the various types of rivals you find in the games. He’s your friend, he’s very helpful at key story moments, but he pushes you to be better and goes all out as a trainer.
What will always sit weird to me about Cheren and Bianca is their anime appearances- and how Cheren is post-timeskip, but Bianca is pre-timeskip, removing the cute detail that Cheren seems to give his glasses to Bianca. I love the Unova rivals for some nostalgia bias, even if I think for the most part, rival designs have improved by a lot. Aside from the uniform limitations.
That might still be the fault of the BW Anime having to get their whole story changed after the whole Rocket vs Plasma episodes where cut They might've had plans to intruduce them both with pre-timeskip designs if the story wasnt changed. But who knows
Silver's quirks totally make sense, even if it wasn't intentional. Because he only cares about power, he forces his Pokemon to evolve sooner than they would usually be ready. But because Golbat only evolves through friendship, it isn't until the post-game after Silver has learned his lesson that he's able to make a bond with his Golbat and get it to evolve. Anyways! This was a fun video, I think the rival characters are fun. Nemona is probably my favorite, but I also really like seeing the character arcs for Cheren and Bianca and how they grow as people between BW and BW2. Also that epic Wally showdown in ORAS is always such a highlight of those games (even if I steamrolled him with an underleveled Flygon last time I played lol), I'm glad his character got a little more fleshed out in the remakes.
Nemona is definitely my favorite. While I do like the rivals that are basically your best friend, crushing them every time you battle them is a little depressing. Nemona is a champion, your best friend, and your mentor all at once. She desperately wants you to beat her to cure her crippling loneliness as a battle maniac with no true equal. She's not some kid you're beating up on. Your relationship with her can continue into the future as a rival and friend without her quitting because you kept beating her every time. Every loss to the player will just excite Nemona and motivate her to improve.
For Silver, maybe he was rough with Totodile & Ghastly, so both evolved to become stronger and avoid his rage, but as Golbat only evolves to Crobat by friendship, even pressure cannot make it evolve
In French, Wally is name Timmy and not Lino. Although we do have an overlap in name with Brock and Steven Stone both being name Pierre which means rock/stone
nemona did not start her journey the same time as us, she already had her done and the journey with us was just "soft reset" for her, she even said she is tooo strong at the start of the game
I think Hau is truly my most favourite rival. I just really like that fella. Even thought many people didn't enjoyed his easy go lucky attitude I love it that he is supporting you, brings you food and truly seems to enjoy the time with you in the custscenes. I'd love to see him grown up in the franchise again.
In Pokemon Adventures' Diamond and Pearl chapter, Pearl (Barry's PA counterpart) also has an orange Poketch. I can't explain why because it's a spoiler for the arc, but it's explained it was actually custom made by the company.
My favorite fact about Trevor, the most forgettable rival in the franchise, is that he was abandoned to take care of his sister by his adventure loving parents, before said sister kicked him out of the house so he could go on an adventure. Dude has the most pointlessly tragic backstory of any rival barring Silver, and yet has no discernible personality beyond "gotta catch a few!"
Nemona is my favourite of the post 3D era rivals. She really flips the story on its head, behaving more like a mixture of a mentor (for all her rival talk) and like what a skilled player character would appear like post elite four & being very familiar with the game (the gym badges being an entirely different style really drives home she's done this all long before the player) The only thing I wish the game could do is rotate different pokemon for her postgame Academy Ace team, making it so that she's got 8 or 10 potential pokemon she might bring to the tournament and making her feel even more like a postgame player character turned npc.
I like Silver the most. Because of how much he changes during the journey in Johto and Kanto. And wow, your team doesn't gain any experience during battle when you take on Nemona? That's dumb.
one thing that's easily missed about trevor is why he wants to fill a pokedex. before entering the battle chateau, you can talk to trevor and he explains there was a pokemon he saw when he was younger that he couldn't identify. so by filling the pokedex, he hopes to solve that mystery.
Nemona is by far my favorite Rival right next to Barry Hop and Hau because out of all the rivals in the series they’re the most believable, well written characters. Nemona especially so- she loves battles and genuinely sees “your potential” to be just as skilled (even though you’ve been playing these games for years lmao)
My favorite rival has to be between Barry, Wally and Hau. My liking for Wally mainly comes from changes in ORAS though, so probably... Hau or Barry. I find Hau and Barry to be very similar in attitudes and approaches to life.
??? evolving his Pokemon early actually fits with his character, who apparently basically bullies his Pokemon into evolving quickly and becoming 'stronger' as fast as possible. So, there's a story reason for his Pokemon evolving early. The one Pokemon that he doesn't do that with is Golbat, which evolves through friendship, which is why it evolves into Crobat after he learns the errror of his ways and vows to be nicer to his Pokemon. It's such a cool detail.
2:53 Wally isn't the only one with such a weird name ordeal. tbh i think it makes sense for Silver to not have a crobat until later on in the game. he sees pokemon as tools, yeah? well, crobat evolves through friendship. his golbat not having evolved until he realizes that using his pokemon as just tools is wrong, and that it being a crobat after he learns that is a nice little detail. it's similar to how Cyrus, who hates humanity and wants to reset the world, still has a crobat, implying that he still cares for his pokemon as friends. my favourite rivals throughout the games have to be Silver (considering the detail about the crobat), Barry, and Nemona, all for different reasons. Barry made it easy to want to push to get stronger, since he was always right ahead of you, Silver had a really nice story (at least in HGSS) and Nemona is fun, partially because she was already a champion and it's clear that she enjoys battling, and the detail that she asks to raise a starter as well to get to watch the player go on their first adventure, and picking the weaker starter so she gets a challenge, is really fun! gen 5 also had really good rivals, i think it was neat that in the first game they were already your friends, and that they have very different motivations to the main character
Silver and Blue cause you actually wanted to beat them. Not just some obnoxious friend who stops you at random’s times, but actually someone you dislike and slowly learn to respect. Makes beating them more satisfying.
Saying about silver and his crobat I feel that Cyrus from diamond and pearl is more surprising considering he feels that pokemon are tools and doesn't want to befriend any yet obvious crobat evolves from happiness
Glad to see someone talk about Trace with more to say than “He’s just knockoff Blue.” Honestly, I prefer Trace over Blue as a rival; I like Blue much more when he’s in a mentor role.
No one can EVER beat Hop. I don't care if he's cringy or whatever. He was so pure, compassionate, real and relatable 😭😭😭😭💖💖 I tried so hard to be beaten by him just because I wanted him to be the Champion. He deserved it!! 😭😭💖💖💖 Hau and Gladion were awesome too (Especially Hau) but Hop still comes out on top 💘💘💘💘💘 Based on this video, I don't know if Arven /really/ counts as a rival, but i still wanted to say how much I also love him as a character. He's just not as charming as Hop to me. Something about him is just kinda impersonal and distant. I don't think that's his fault at all, given his crappy upbringing :( Arven deserved better in terms of a storyline, just like Hop. Both of them needed to have more detailed stories. Incredible characters with half-arsed arcs and development when they could've been even more incredible had they been given the time and attention they deserve 😭😭😭
YES. Hop is fantastic. He's definitely my favourite too. I don't know why he gets so much hate. Of all the rivals, I feel like he's the most dimensional (but to be fair, I haven't played the Gen 5, 6, or 7 games).
Fact: Blue has an underleveled Pidgeotto, in FireRed and LeafGreen, when you fight him in Cerulean City. As it is level 17 despite the fact that Pidgey doesn't evolve until level 18. This maybe due to the fact that his Pidgeotto and Starter's levels are swapped from Red, Blue and Green as they are 18 and 17 respectively in those games. This is in addition to his underleveled Raticate that he has when fought on the S.S. Anne. I prefer Barry, Cheren and Hugh over most other rivals post-gen 4, because despite being your friends they are actually trying to be your rivals.
@@oragnutanggang3921 I don't have the heart to r/woooosh you, so I'll just reply normally. I'm more of a Hugh kinda person, but I really like Bianca's development in Black and White. I like her more than Cheren (but not more than N). I relate to her struggle with finding something to do in life while having a parental figure that tries to hold her back from new experiences. Hugh is still my favourite though.
@@meteor9573 Yeah it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell that you were being sarcastic. I was trying to reply sarcastically. N I think is by far the weakest (in terms of story) of the three Unova rivals. He doesn’t feel real or relatable compared to Cheren or Bianca and unlike the ladder two, N is hardly in B2/W2 because he had no reason to be. N’s story was good for one game only, whereas, Cheren and Bianca grew throughout B/W and B2/W2 you got to see what they become. N didn’t have the same feeling of reality they did. The other two you got to grow with and their struggles were relatable. N was just a puppet used by Ghetsis to fuel his schemes until he N found out what Ghetsis’s actual intentions were. Hugh I didn’t relate with whatsoever. The only thing I can remember from him is, “I’m trying to find my sister’s Purrloin!” and that was it. Aside from that, he was mid at best. I feel like Barry was done better. He was a stronger battler too.
@@oragnutanggang3921 Welp, I think I ruined our sarcastic replies then... Sorry about that... Anyway, I don't think N was supposed to be relatable, given his very specific circumstances and way of thinking. I still think he's an amazing character, but the fact that the game ends moments after he's freed of Ghetsis' manipulation really harms his character development for me. Everytime I played B2W2 I felt like something about him was missing or unfinished. I also don't relate to Hugh despite liking him a lot. He's just the kind of person I would want to be friends irl. Someone that is willing to fight at your side, no matter what, and protect those he loves the most, despite the risks. He's a little edgy with those clothes from hot topic and that catchphrase about unleashing his rage, but he's not too edgy like Gladion, and definitely not a jerk like Silver. He's a friendly rival, but not happy-go-lucky or annoying. Also, he punched a Neo Team Plasma Grunt. This automatically makes him cool. I don't think a character need to be relatable to be considered well-written, though it's always better to be relatable AND well-written. Lillie is a great example of a character who has both qualities. Personally, I think Barry is kind of annoying, and the "fine" thing is not all that great, but I agree that his battles are challenging and he goes through a certain development revolving his impatience and restlessness. Also, don't you think it's weird how the running gag of Bianca always being in a rush and ending up pushing Ash into bodies of water in the anime seems like something Barry would do, at least in the games? It reminds me of his habit of acidentally bumping into the protagonist with a loud "THUD!" .
I'm pretty sure that Cheren's line of "Wow you didn't take a single damage to defeat Bianca" is considered "Unused text" This is because Bianca is hard-coded to use Tackle as her first command. As Tackle has a 100% rate of hitting and you can't lower her accuracy, you also aren't able to one-shot her starter even with a high roll crit, you will always take a hit
Wally's French name is not Lino and I've never heard of him having that name before and then being renamed. As far as I remember, Wally's French name has always been "Timmy".
And interesting thing about hop is he tell you he replaced one of his Pokémon with a new one to try win the battle, but still have less Pokémon than 6 lol? Aka dumb
finally, some good fucking food edited to add. to answer the question at the end of the video, my favorite is Silver. he is permamently embedded in my brain (i mean that literally)
Say what? Xiao Guang is a physics verb tern meaning: light extinction. It can also mean "matt/frost" as in a frosted bulb. But that is 2 words. Not one. And stand alone it really does not make sense. But saying it means light is plainly wrong. The word is made of 2 parts. The fiest word Xiao is: disappear/vanish. The second wors is Guang, light/bright. So vanishing light. My bad, dawn's name is not 消光, 小光 The first is what I talked about the second means little light.
Hugh's level down is a weird situation. In fact, in the whole game, before you beat the game, you only battle him 4 times. You mostly are teaming up with him to battle Team Plasma. And no, you don't battle him in Lacunosa Town, That battle is a team-up battle with him facing Zinzolin. Since in Challenge mode they only level up your opponent, Hugh in Lacunosa Town didn't get the level boost as he is your ally, not your opponent.
Seriously. Bede felt more like a rival than Hop, who seeing just made me grow annoyed with him. The point of a rival is to want to beat them. Constantly beating up your friend, or some kid the game forces you to be friends with with no build up, feels sad. Especially when Hop FELL INTO DEPRESSION FROM IT! Having characters that are your friends isn't a bad thing, but that honestly peaked back in Hoenn because you weren't immediately their friend, they start off as a nice rival and the friendship blossoms. Plus, seeing Silver evolve what was likely a 0 friendship Golbat felt heartwarming.
Chinese audience here. Astonished that you guys nailed the fact of Wally and Dawn having the same name in Chinese without getting anything wrong. Except for the pronunciation, which I can't blame you if you are not native Chinese. Wally's name was only changed when Pokemon games "officially" started to sell in Chinese (in Gen7). The new name of Wally was also made into Beni's Potato Mochi stand, the Wallflower, as a hint of them being related.

1:42 he used pokemon go to get them.
Silver and Blue cause you actually wanted to beat them. Not just some obnoxious friend who stops you at random’s times, but actually someone you dislike and slowly learn to respect. Makes beating them more satisfying.
One of my favorite rivals is Trace. Not only is he just nice Blue, but is so strong that his Mega Evolution isn't even his ace.
I love these fact videos.
Wally is not called Lino in French, his name is Timmy.
Timmy like Timmy Turner.
5:32 why was i expecting him to say both don’t have parents 💀
I like Nemona and it is purely because she has a really fun design 😊
Saying about silver and his crobat I feel that Cyrus from diamond and pearl is more surprising considering he feels that pokemon are tools and doesn't want to befriend any yet obvious crobat evolves from happiness
Glad to see someone talk about Trace with more to say than “He’s just knockoff Blue.” Honestly, I prefer Trace over Blue as a rival; I like Blue much more when he’s in a mentor role.
Not sure if I understand it the rhight way but Wally's name in French is Timmy not Lino. The gym leader is indeed named Lino though
No one can EVER beat Hop. I don't care if he's cringy or whatever. He was so pure, compassionate, real and relatable 😭😭😭😭💖💖 I tried so hard to be beaten by him just because I wanted him to be the Champion. He deserved it!! 😭😭💖💖💖
Hau and Gladion were awesome too (Especially Hau) but Hop still comes out on top 💘💘💘💘💘
Based on this video, I don't know if Arven /really/ counts as a rival, but i still wanted to say how much I also love him as a character.
I actually have a Playthrough of Platinum where I named my rival Jun just on a whim🤣
Barry’s a jerk in the anime: “I’m gonna fine you!”
I like blue as the best rival. Since he was the very first rival you meet
Isnt N technicaly also your rival In B&W?
You can probably guess who my favorite rival (and character all together) is.
Is it Cheren?
@@meteor9573 It is not. Although I do like Cheren.
Bianca’s been my favorite since 2010 before Black and White were even available worldwide.
I'm pretty sure that Cheren's line of "Wow you didn't take a single damage to defeat Bianca" is considered "Unused text"
This is because Bianca is hard-coded to use Tackle as her first command.
As Tackle has a 100% rate of hitting and you can't lower her accuracy, you also aren't able to one-shot her starter even with a high roll crit, you will always take a hit
Someone did a no damage run, and they got that text.
I know, I landed a critical, in the first battle against Nemona
Didn't know Avery was male until lately
Nah, Hau would TRY to be friends with Silver and then end up punching him in the mouth eventually.
What about the rival guy in the second DLC for Sword and Shield in the Tundra?
Peony (if that's who you're referring to) is not a rival.
another fun fact about these rivals is they are dateable to me
Wally's French name is not Lino and I've never heard of him having that name before and then being renamed.
As far as I remember, Wally's French name has always been "Timmy".
oops, i meant italian but wrote french in the script by accident
@@PaPaSea I understand, it happens!
Timmy like Timmy Turner.
And interesting thing about hop is he tell you he replaced one of his Pokémon with a new one to try win the battle, but still have less Pokémon than 6 lol? Aka dumb
I didn't knew tht first one lol
So we’re not gonna mention the among us during the XY portion
What is that.
@@fireembliam9090 look at the bottom left corner of the screen in the beginning of the kalos section
2:43 actually, Wally's name in french is "Timmy".
yeah i made a mistake its supposed to be italian
@@PaPaSea I see. When I heard that fact I was like "wait, they didn't change his name in the remakes, it's still Timmy, right?" Well it was ^.^
Timmy like Timmy Turner.
Doesn't HGSS have two rivals? Silver and the professor's assistant (or kid)? Can't remember which
Ethan/Lyra are not rivals. There's not even a battle against them.
finally, some good fucking food
edited to add. to answer the question at the end of the video, my favorite is Silver. he is permamently embedded in my brain (i mean that literally)
I do really like Silver
@@ImyIsStillHere :D thats good.
if i could get my hands on some licensed silver plushie i'd use it as a milk cat (i'm insane)
@@beloveduser Well Silver is great
My bad, dawn's name is not 消光, 小光
The first is what I talked about the second means little light.
Yassss crossover 😍
doesnt crobat evolve with happiness/friendship?
Sorry to be like that, Wally's name in French is Timmy, not shared with Lino 🤓
Timmy like Timmy Turner.
Silver and Nemona are the best rivals
2:50 also in italian
4:50
I really like the Kalos rivals
Blue from Temu.
??? Is my favorite by far❤
I don't get why they felt the need to change his name to Boy in the remakes and give him the Passerby Trainer Class. ??? is such a beautiful name.
Silver is my Favorite Rival. He is a criminal, Who stole his first pokemon. He is the son of Giovanni
Pokémon needs to bring back rivals who are assholes that insult you
Compares Trace to someone he met
Chinese audience here. Astonished that you guys nailed the fact of Wally and Dawn having the same name in Chinese without getting anything wrong.
Except for the pronunciation, which I can't blame you if you are not native Chinese.
Wally's name was only changed when Pokemon games "officially" started to sell in Chinese (in Gen7).
The new name of Wally was also made into Beni's Potato Mochi stand, the Wallflower, as a hint of them being related.
Silver 🐐

Trust me
Queen Bianca or nothing
PapaSea has no rivals in content quality.
