This is absolutely brilliant. Thank you for taking the time to figure this out. I have a shoot next week, where strangely enough the b-cam to my FX9 is an A73 and I was wondering how to communicate to the post house what I was doing. Typically I shoot PP5 on the A73 and HG4 on the FS7 - which match reasonably well as long as you tweak in post. The new science of the FX9 & cinetone throws a wrench in that - but I love CineTone and want to be able to continue to shoot in gammas like this when log isn't an option (like having a mirrorless b-cam). Thank you again! You saved the day!
The Cinetone is a lovely look... (I do find I'm doing more white balances though... you need to nail it to prevent too much green creeping in!) I'm told everyone's reaction to the original look of the Venice is what's prompted Sony's change of base 'look' to all their cameras. Glad I helped a little.... hope your shoot is enjoyable and do let us know if this profile works well for you.
Mate, seriously, your videos always make my day! Keep up the incredible vibe! You and Gerald Undone should team up because you guys make the most geeky video knowledge entertaining. Cheers!!!
Wow.. i am far away from your level of knowledge may be lightyears away.. Really appreciate your expertise about sony cameras. It helps me a lot to understand the colour science sony has taken for consumers.
Informative AND entertaining - you're a rare breed my friend! I shoot with a pair of A7III bodies and shot SLOG-2 for a long time. About a year ago I switched to HLG3 and have had no complaints. It's a good balance for my clients require and my workflow. I'm anxious to try this out though. I'll likely do some side by side with my two bodies and to see if another change is in order.
Hi Matt, thanks for the kind comment, much appreciated. I'm a big fan of HLG3 especially if I'm able to give it a few tweaks in post. You'll probably see less dynamic range in S-Cinetone with slightly crushed blacks compared to HLG3. The thing about S-Cinetone, is it was designed by Sony to be used straight out of camera without any grading at all. The colours are inspired by the Venice camera with it's very filmic handling of the highlights etc. It's a very pleasing look that hopefully will be standard across all Sony cameras soon, but the price is all in DR.
I did this with an a6500 and get jpegs that I like better. I don't have a bigger camera to match footage too but this is more pleasing than the standard profile and avoids banding from 8-bit log. Thank you!

Having said that your stuff looks great so I wanted to ask: how much effort is involved? Would “standard” on A7SIII be enough for most natural light situations? I’d appreciate any feedback! This has been the most enlightening explanation into bit depth and chroma subsampling. The graphics were especially helpful in understanding. Thank you! :)
So for giggles, I plugged these settings into the a6400 to see what would come of it. Looks great as far as the skin tones and color rendition, but the a6400 has a harsh highlight roll off. I will have to see what I can do about the roll off and it will be good. I would imagine because it is a smaller sensor (1.5 crop) and horrible global shutter which may point to processing power. However it does have a 6K sensor well worth the investigation.
I see someone else had nice results from the a6400. First thing to look at would be the knee settings. Try them on auto and see if it's softer. Alternatively, Cine2 doesn't use super whites so switch from Cine4. You won't get quite the dynamic range, but the colours should still match! Thank you for the feedback.

Thanks for the kind comment Andrew... hope it helped. I only moved to Bournmouth relatively recently... but I also have great memories of family holidays around these beaches.
Just tested this with an FX3 in S-Cinetone & an A7M3 with your settings. I am amazed how similar the results are. Only difference was in case of skin tones. A7M3 tends to be more greenish/yellowish.
I have either of these Sony cameras but I have the same issue from my a6400's, a6600 and ZV1. I just wish there was a magic button to have them all shoot the same picture profile!!
Great video and I always like your tecnical stuff. I'd love to see the same done with an A7s and/or A7sii if you ever get time and a camera. I'm sure someone local to you would be happy to lend you one just to know what settings they need to get close to the fx9. I miss the podcasts when I'm driving.
Thanks ExtraShot! Great info. I've just done a test with my FX9 and A7iii using your S-Cinetone-like settings. And it's a pretty close match. I had to tweak the A7iii a little towards red in the grade, but it's a small adjustment. I'll be using it for 2-camera shoots.
I think i knew all the technical stuff, but i watched it anyway and i have not seen such a good explanation before. I loved it. ( and i only have Panasonic gear, nuts!)
Wanting to get fx9 so badly because of the color profile but not sure how... it is out of my budget range but I m glad I found this video... I will try these settings on my a7iii...can’t wait to see the result...thank you 🙏
@@extrashot ua-cam.com/video/SIKcYHm6sQQ/v-deo.html Here is the link that I tested today. I am very happy and satisfied with the outcome.....Thank you !!!
@@user-dt1do1pt9x That looks good... very filmic. Did you crush the blacks at all? The first few shots look quite green and I've noticed that a good white balance is essential on Cinetone. The colour balance seems more critical for some reason! Amazing how good the A7iii can look though.
@@extrashot Thank you for the feedback! Yes, beginning shot was over exposed and tried to balance it by lowering the highlight area, but I fiddled too much with color balance... I will try it again...Yes, a7iii is awesome just need to practice more... I used to use canon 7d and I had my color profile on Cinestyle and to me color seems more settle and filmic....Still figuring out...btw, will it help me to white balance in post if I hold a white paper in every beginning of the shoot, in case if I messed up the white balance...? Thank you in advance !!!
@@user-dt1do1pt9x I wasn't criticising... the shots are lovely! Something white (or neutral grey) in shot will defiantly help if your grading the pictures later. Many people use the Colorchecker Video Passport things, and just flash them up for a second after changing any camera settings, but these are very expensive for what they are. Anything white is a massive aid in the edit... I usually pull up the RGB waveform in the scopes and then adjust the white and tint settings until the RGB lines merge on the whatever is white. When I'm shooting I usually like to leave the A7iii in the custom white setting... and just set this by pointing at my white subject and hitting the button (you only need the little circle on the white)... it's really accurate and saves a lot of time later.
Great video, really helpful. Just checking do you use any custom white balance settings with your scinetone or just hit auto white balance on both each time you change scenes and away you go!?
Good question.... I used to use the preset white settings pretty much all the time... but since S-Cinetone came out, I've found I'm doing a lot more white balances each time I change location. It's as if the white balance is more critical with S-Cinetone. It's easy to end up with quite a strong green or magenta tint if you always go with the presets. Not difficult to correct in post, but I always prefer to get as close as I can in camera... it usually looks better!
Hey love your videos. I just took the plunge and bought a Fx9 thx in part to your videos. I was gonna wait til October. But sold Fs5 and made plunge. Anyways if u could make a tutorial guide on how you setup your FX9 quick buttons that would be amazing. I needed to look into pdf guide just to change dual iso from low to high. Be nice if I had it on a quick access button. Camera is so customizable and so many settings it's a bit overwhelming. A video guide to setup camera buttons the way you setup would be awesome.
That's a really good idea for a video Adam, Tell you what... before I start, I'll ask around all my colleagues, who've got FX9's, to see what they do. I have a setup I'm happy with, but I might be the odd one out... or much more likely someone else has a much better setup !!! Thanks for the kind comment and the idea.
@@extrashot I just got FX9 friday.. by didnt send the xqd cards I ordered a camera AT SAME TIME so I haven't had a chance to use it yet. Impossible to find xqd cards at local bestbuy walmart or camera store. Anyways hopefully by wednesday I'll have some xqd cards. I didnt see a high low dual iso switch? I guess you need to assign a button. But I'm curious to know what other assigned buttons you use? Thx 4 all the hard work.
@@adambaker284 Wow that's frustrating!! (hope it's not great weather too)... The Hi-Lo base needs to be assigned to a button. I use button 9 just because it's under the gain switches and indented a little, so less likely to press it by accident... (it will change even if you're in the middle of recording). I did a quick tips video shortly after I got mine, which might be of use... it's here: ua-cam.com/video/pQN5ZtwlMGA/v-deo.html
@@extrashot you know where I can learn more about cine EI mode? And this exposure index for multi? Is this the same setup as fs7 cine ei. Where is good material to learn??
@@adambaker284 Cine EI on the FX9 is basically the same as the FS7 (apart from the dual base ISO's of course). I had to learn it when I first got the F5 (much the same camera as the FS7). The only major difference with the FX9 is you now have full control of the white balance - you could only use the three presets before. The FX9 is also much cleaner than the previous cameras, so so don't need to push the exposure and sit on it in post to reduce noise in the shadows. (first Sony cameras were very noisy because they expected you to do everything in post - including noise reduction). It gets easier if you think of Cine EI as shooting film negative... all the settings on the camera don't change what you record... just the metadata that goes with the film. The EI or exposure index is just letting the person developing the film know how many stops you want to push or pull the film in processing, (or in post). The camera will always be recording the widest dynamic range possible from the sensor, and in theory there's nothing you can do to change it. To get an indication of what we're recording, and the correct exposure, LUTS are normally used for the viewfinder or monitors... what now makes things more complicated is people wanted to be able to 'burn' those LUTS into the final recording... which for many, defeats the whole purpose of Cine EI !!! I learned at a lot from Alister Chapmans site: www.xdcam-user.com - he's very good on the technicalities of what's going on with Sony cameras, but you'll have to search through the blog.
Oh nice. I'll have to do some tests with these settings. Usually I'm shooting S-Log3 on the FX9 and have been trying different color profiles on the A7iii that aren't S-log for all the reasons you explained. I'm curious to see if I can get a close match in camera. I just did a shoot where the yellows were vastly different and that took quite a bit of time to correct. I haven't done a lot in S-Cinetone except youtube talking head stuff, although when I do corporate interviews in controlled lighting I'll probably use it as well since it's such an easy quick profile.
I also found the yellows a little tricky... the FX9 can have some strange colour casts if you simply dial in the white balance? Let me know how you get on.
Great video! I went a bit further on the Color Depth settings, because on resolve I kept adjusting them to a more old Alexa style color, thus moved on to: R+3 G+3 B-1 C0 M+1 Y+1 This way not that much tweaking in Resolve - But that's just personal preference
I have a feeling resolve does handle colours differently to FCPX... well the gamma anyway, which has the effect of changing the colours very slightly on your display. So what you say does make sense. Thank you for letting us know.
Fantastic technical explanation!!!! Best ever! Love your channel! Would be great if you could give some insight as to what gear to acquire to cover your typical 2-person interview-style corporate gig. 3 cams? Would a FX9 match up easily with 2 A7S iii’s? What would you do for lighting etc. Thanks again!
That's a really good idea... and I've been planning a series which should cover just that sort of question. It's more about how to use whatever kit I've got with me... hopefully, when we get a break from lockdowns!
Thank you... and that's a good question. Isn't there a 'Venice' look already on the FS5? That might be the place to start. The problem with using the A7iii settings is the sensor is quite different. Not sure it'll work. You've given me an idea for a series of video's though!
Great video! I will definitely be using these setting this weekend. Why do you prefer E mount lenses on your a7iii vs full frame lenses? ironically I order the same sigma 30 mm 1.4 for mine yesterday. One of the best lenses I've owned since shooting with Sony. Thanks again!
Thank you... just so you know, I've updated these settings since the FX6 launched with a version 2 here: ua-cam.com/video/gRYG5QKXRS4/v-deo.html Not sure what you mean by E-Mount but all my lenses are full frame FE lenses? That Sigma is a great lens... enjoy.

@@extrashot yes, about 2 weeks ago I believe just haven't had too much time to play with it. I did create the profile on the a7 iii already so I will definitely test out soon.
extrashot can I ask, does your post production workflow involve Sony’s catalyst software at all? I don’t suppose you use FCPX and have also been affected by the latest update 10.4.9 which renders some FX9 .MXF files unreadable...?
@@rawmintvideo I've only been using Catalyst if I need to stabilise FX9 stuff... it's not a normal part of my workflow but I fear it might be soon! This whole thing with FCPX is madness. I appreciate how you represented the technical stuff. I have the A7Siii here in front of me and I am wondering just what color profile this thing shipped with is supposed to match or come close to the FX9.
I haven't got mine yet (I'm at the back of the queue)... but I'm told there is an internal profile in the A7Siii which is close to S-Cinetone. Philip Bloom tells me (below) it just needs a tweak to the contrast, but I need to test it side by side to find out for sure.

Would you mind doing another video showing details and thought process that went into comparing the scenes from FX9 to A7 III along with adjustments you made (from timecode 8:50 to 9:50)? This would be helpful for people who want to match various cameras and profiles even for non-Sony users. Keep up the amazing work!

This is what I call a perfect video! So effortless to watch and enjoyable thanks to your charm and good humour! And then you actually deliver high quality technical content on top of that! The video and shots themselves are very pleasing and you don't come across as tacky or try-hard like a lot of creators I see. Happily now subscribed! Many thanks for the video! 😄
Wow... it's comments like yours that make it all worth while. Thank you, and cheers for the sub, it's appreciated!
I did enjoy back to basics! Thank you
Thank you.
Great settings. I tried it immediatelly on the A7 III and it gives a really beautiful soft look to the footage. Thanks a lot!
Glad I could help... it is a nice look!
Thank you for your time creating this video - I’m a professional cinematographer and documentary filmmaker and enjoyed your video very much. Plus the final shot with Bournemouth in the distance brought back happy memories enjoying those beaches and Corfe Castle in the far distance with my parents :)
True... but I hope you find them useful.
pure awesomeness and wonderfullity (joyful - thanks a lot)
and spot on with the A7sIII btw
You're welcome... hope it works well for you.
One of the best tutorials on UA-cam. Great work! Sub! 🔥🔥
Thank you... genuinely appreciated! 👍
Thank you for the tip on this. My FX6 is on the way and this looks like a good match. Your FX9 and FX6 videos definitely guided my purchase
Glad it helped Lee... enjoy the FX6... it's amazing! 👍
I tried it on the zv1, it looks great! Thanks
Good to hear, thank you.
who is trying this between a73 and fx6 in 2022?
Great video. Best 10bit data explanation i've seen in a very long time. Thanks P
Thank you
Loved the tech portion. You're awesome !
Too kind! 😂
Just found your channel and I cant wait to try out these setting. Thank you for this vid.
Great, glad you're found it.... let me know if they work for you or what you'd like to improve?
I have either of these Sony cameras but I have the same issue from my a6400's, a6600 and ZV1. I just wish there was a magic button to have them all shoot the same picture profile!!
Ahh... the magic button we're all looking for! (I hope Sony are listening)
Thank you for your time and effort here, excellent and very very helpful. Cant wait to try it out now. Cheers Noel
Hope it works well for you Noel... thanks for the comment.
Thanks so much for your hard work to bring this to us. It has been invaluable for me to use my A7III as a B camera to my FX9. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words! Sorry it took so long for my reply.
I'd be VERY interested in how the a7s III stacks up as a B Cam for the FX9... just in case you were thinking getting one ☝️
I'd love to get one... just not sure if I can justify it with so little work around! 😳

Great video and I always like your tecnical stuff. I'd love to see the same done with an A7s and/or A7sii if you ever get time and a camera. I'm sure someone local to you would be happy to lend you one just to know what settings they need to get close to the fx9. I miss the podcasts when I'm driving.
True... who knows, there might be a new A7S soon!.... I also miss doing the podcasts!
Great show again! I wish you could do a daily show as I really enjoy your gear talk. Nice and breezy style. Cheers!
Thanks Will... that would be so much work... I'm not able to make this my day job yet!
Just did a shoot and matched the a7r4 with the Fx9 s-cinetone very well! :) Thank you !
That's really good to hear... glad it helps with the A7R4 too. Thank you 👍
I'm now about three videos deep, absolutely love the way you put these together. Thanks so much, going to test these settings :)
Thank you... and I hope they work well for you! Let us know how you get on.
I love the tech detail information and demo video, is so easy to understand why. Hope to see more. Thank you.
...and thank you too! Appreciate the comment.
Thanks for the feedback John. Great to hear you found it was close and good of you to share the tweak. Much appreciated!
Excellent and informative. Really enjoyed this and would like to see more technical stuff explained in the same clear and concise style!
Thanks Matt, very kind!
I think i knew all the technical stuff, but i watched it anyway and i have not seen such a good explanation before. I loved it. ( and i only have Panasonic gear, nuts!)
Thank you Christer... very kind....
(and I still love my Pana gear!)
Amazing, or epic, dont know, but this really brings new perspective.
Happy to help!
Omg you should charge for this! You sir are a god send. Thank you for this
Thanks Brendon... too kind (but I wish I could) !!!
I enjoyed all the technical explanations, please do more. Thank you!

This was so informative! Thank you so much for explaining all that “technical stuff” and thanks for taking the time to find the settings!

Thanks Very much I really stucked color Profile with A7iii.
Love your wit and how you explain things, please keep it up! Question, will this affect my still photos also?

Very useful, this. Thanks! I’ll try those settings on my A7iii to see how close I can get to my FX9.
Let me know if it works for you... cheers.
Excellent video, very helpful and well presented.
Thanks Dominic, very kind and appreciated!
Great video! I went a bit further on the Color Depth settings, because on resolve I kept adjusting them to a more old Alexa style color, thus moved on to:
R+3 G+3 B-1 C0 M+1 Y+1
This way not that much tweaking in Resolve - But that's just personal preference
I have a feeling resolve does handle colours differently to FCPX... well the gamma anyway, which has the effect of changing the colours very slightly on your display. So what you say does make sense. Thank you for letting us know.
Came across this video trying to match an A7sii to FX3 running S-Cinetone. We'll see how it goes!
Hey how did it come out
Fantastic technical explanation!!!!

This video is a game changer! Can I use these settings on my Sony Fs5 mk I?
Thank you... and that's a good question. Isn't there a 'Venice' look already on the FS5? That might be the place to start. The problem with using the A7iii settings is the sensor is quite different. Not sure it'll work. You've given me an idea for a series of video's though!
@@extrashot I'll look into that. I'm glad I can help with your series. :) I cant' wait to see it.
Thank you... just so you know, I've updated these settings since the FX6 launched with a version 2 here: ua-cam.com/video/gRYG5QKXRS4/v-deo.html
Not sure what you mean by E-Mount but all my lenses are full frame FE lenses? That Sigma is a great lens... enjoy.

Thank you Raw Mint.... and you've got some nice quality going on your channel too! Great pictures.
extrashot can I ask, does your post production workflow involve Sony’s catalyst software at all? I don’t suppose you use FCPX and have also been affected by the latest update 10.4.9 which renders some FX9 .MXF files unreadable...?
@@rawmintvideo I've only been using Catalyst if I need to stabilise FX9 stuff... it's not a normal part of my workflow but I fear it might be soon! This whole thing with FCPX is madness. Luckily, I didn't upgrade at the last prompt... so I'm still on 10.14.8 which is fine. Apple and Sony need to sort it asap as they will both lose out eventually.

This explanation was amazing, thanks!
