    Thanks so much for the clear and easy to follow instructions. I bought a lamp kit from good old Amazon. The kit was fine, but the instructions were total rubbish! You saved the day.

      I agree, the kits don't help you out much. I'm so glad this video helped you!

    Thank you 👍🏽 You are a great teacher! I appreciate that you simplified the process and you gave us close up view of what you were doing. I have two cherished lamps that need to be required and I wanted to learn to do it myself. Yours is the third video that I have watched on rewiring a lamp. Now after your video I have the confidence to do it myself and am looking forward to get busy at it! Awesome 👏🏼

    4:01 It is an older lamp socket but it is perfectly fine to use if it still works. It IS polarized but just doesn't have one brass and one silver screw. The neutral wire terminal is 180° opposite of the switch and has a triangular shape and the hot wire terminal is the other one (on most of these sockets). The hot wire terminal hangs lower and is slimmer on your lamp socket, just like it is the slender of the two spades on the plug end (the neutral spade on the plug is the one with a wider head).

    I am excited to rewire my first lamp. Helpful video. I would suggest though, that people can use the old wire as a pull cord for the new wiring. Meaning, just use electrical tape to join the wire and pull the new wiring through as you pull the old wiring out. Very easy and no need to struggle to thread new wiring. Thanks for the video!

    I really liked it. What about the washers and nuts at the bottom inside the base.

    • @thesimplehomeplace
      @thesimplehomeplace  Рік тому +1

      I'm not sure which ones you're talking about. There weren't any that were in the bottom or anywhere inside the base itself, only at the top where you connect the lightbulb.

    3:35 The socket can be split in two without tools. Look for the "PRESS" engraved into the top portion of the socket (it is usually adjacent to the switch knob). Put your thumb there and your index finger 180° opposite and gently squeeze. This will slightly deform the top and allow the "teeth" in the top half to disengage from the row of dimples stamped around the circumference of the base. It takes some Mom Strength to do it, or just use a thin screwdriver and pry at those two spots (where your thumb and index finger lie) and it will come apart.

    I had a vintage lamp with a very small base opening at bottom.It was impossible to fix without a long thin metal bracket to thread through the top.I like to see a vid on how to fix that,it was very difficult,The person fixing it said I needed a small child with long arms to go thru ceramic bottom to thread at the top,crazy

    • @thesimplehomeplace
      @thesimplehomeplace  3 місяці тому

      Wow, that's crazy! I've done a few lamps, but none that have had a tiny bottom like that. I'm glad you were able to find someone to fix it though!

    Rather than pulling the old wire out, and struggling to thread the new cord all the way through, the smarter way is to strip the end of the new cord, and twist it to the old cord at the top where the socket is. Then you're just going to pull that old cord through and it will feed the new cord all the way through the lamp. It saves you all the grief of trying to feed that new cord through the entire length of the lamp.

    • @PostalPrimadonna
      @PostalPrimadonna Місяць тому

      Of course you can't do this if you buy a kit that has the outlet plug on the end of your new cord. It can only be done if you have a cord that you are going to add the plug to later.

      @@PostalPrimadonna Or you can cut the old plug off and attach the new wire to the cut end.

      Yes, cut the plug off of the old cord and attach the new one to it and pull through the lamp base.

    Unfortunately, I don’t think this will work for me because my lamp is 100 years old. I bought it for $90 at my local antique store. And when you lift up the lamp off of a surface you can see it has multiple wires that go up the lamp like the inside of a tree trunk, so it’s not just one wire going down it in the inside. This tutorial, I think, is more for vintage to used lamps and not antique ones like mine. I’m not sure how to get mine fixed! 🙁

    • @thesimplehomeplace
      @thesimplehomeplace  5 днів тому +1

      Yeah I definitely would be cautious with that. You can always have an electrician look at it. I've heard they can re-wire lamps.
