this was a great one to watch because it really highlights the need to get your head into everything you can and be willing to say "nope, not at this price" and be willing to see a reduced offer shot down.
Well done, bro. Of course, the seller knew about most of the rot, but at least it looked like you had a nice trip and taught everyone a fine lesson in boat surveying. It's not about the boat, it's the journey and I look forward to the next video!
Honestly mate, you dodged a bullet. I know the previous owners, Sarah and John. They're on a Catana 47 now. John was always chasing deck rot on the moon.
yes and no. you can get a cheap ryobi moisture meter and do just fine. Moisture meters do not truly "work" on fiberglass, all they do is create signals that give you a visual representation when 2 spots are different, and if it's different enough to matter on a moisture meter then tapping will do just as well too. Even the most expensive moisture meter can't be trusted to mean that a spot is truly good because it's "low" or it's bad because it's "high", hence why even the cheapest models are just as good at simply letting you know "something is different" if you dont want to walk around whacking every inch of the boat.
Very happy to see a video from you after so long. I used to wait with great anticipation for your videos. Even my non sailing brother sitting here with me tonight enjoyed this video (and is glad you didn't buy that cat with all the work it needed). I and probably many others would be very interested in seeing some videos of Pearl and your activities since Percy Island. Hoping to see more videos from you again soon.
You should upload more I’ve watched most of your content. You have a great style and produce great videos. All the best with whatever you do in the future.
@@TheMerTheMan What's needed is an update in the treatment of the ply.. RM Yatchs in France have been building for decades using Epoxy plywood. There are two companies at work one is Dutch based Accora ...they essentially pickle the soft wood .. this results in softwoods that resist rot like hardwoods .. The other is newer and yet to be commercially developed. They chemically re Engineer the wood further and pressure treat it ..till the softwood becomes more like natural carbon fiber Composites or metals . The company is called Inventwood ... and the product goes under the name of Metelwood. It was developed by a Prof. Hu. Working in US/Canadian Forestry related research establishments. And is featured elsewhere on U tube. If I put up a link it might get deleted ..so I will do it separately. But how does 80yrs rot proof and metal type torsional strength.
I remember when this boat first came for sale… she looked the goods from the photos! For the right price, the Crowther 39s are awesome and a refit would be doable.. but - you’ve gotta be prepared to put the yards in. She has awesome lines and foam hulls… just the deck needs some love. Anyway, as you probably worked out he likely was insulted by your lowball offer and couldn’t be arsed responding further. Fair enough.
Yeah you're right! I was hoping to find less work. Although sometimes you don’t know until you go and check it out. A great learning experience and a fun journey nonetheless.
Looked at 14 boats before we pulled the trigger, I so wanted a wharram, the missus put the kebosh on that pretty quick. Good to see you back man, keep at it, you will find the boat.
You offered him $1. Right?!? Smart move. Old mate knew exactly what was going on and was hoping for a dreamer. We all know about James and his broken Zingaro (Crowther). You'll be far happier if you can find a well built Wharram. Thanks for bringing us along.
We bought a cat similar to Pearl, just after you bought her. We sailed all the WA coast, to Darwin, all the way through Indo, Malaysia and sold it there. Like you, we're on the lookout for a new boat. Good luck.
looks like a Crowther 45, i built a 40, Lock drew great boats but you are correct to understand that much more rot would reveal itself. I would guess that this was approx a 1980 build era, VERY similar to mine that is now in day charter in USA. Mine was airex hulls, awesome material but ply bulkheads and decks will be problematic after 40 years.
I'm not a full time viewer but I drop in onya time to time to see how your going .I'm glad you never stopped dreaming about your next boat because with out dreams we go no where .
Owner or previous owners may not have done the preventative maintenance to ensure the vessels seaworthy integrity most likely, possibly happy to palm that piece of crap off to some unknowing victim. The universe wont allow you to be ripped off in such a way, happy days, I noticed cool
😅well done sage and congratulations for being able to make this observation and stand by it despite your bigger dreams. in a way you were cashing in futher on the investment yo made into your current boat and what it took to fix it up, nice to hear from you 🎉
Get the boat professionally inspected then there is no surprises no just a half assed self inspection it is probably way worse than you think it also needs to be out of the water for a proper inspection
G, day Captain Merman and crew, merry Christmas and all the best regards for the festive season. Have you considered channeling your resources into the further development of the " Pearl ", you've a set of very well designed hulls, ready to go as far as a " build " potential is concerned. Great to see you advancing your potential and success regardless. All the best regards once more from here on the West Coast side of Australia 🌏 Batavia Coast 🇦🇺🙏🖖🤟🐨👽😎
I started watching then thought I I was you I would have got off the boat half way through the inspection. Don't waste you money. to many other good boats out there. If you do go further as part of the negotiation I would absolutely want a qualified surveyor to go through the boat with a fine tooth comb. When you see rot that has not been addressed in my experience its just a small windowo into a boat that has not been maintained and will have further unseen issues. Don't be ruled by emotion.
First time here subscribed and liked 👍. Count your blessings you're saved from that tin of worms. Was worried for you when you said that you put-in an offer 😳. Best of luck in finding something descent as the way things are going right now, it shouldn't be that difficult to find something well loved and cared for rather than trying resurrecting dying devil in disguise. Time spent to raise more money is more enjoyable than the struggles and disappointment of life time trying to inject new life into that rotten thing. Sorry but that's my honest opinion from my experiences.
$1 about right! If, and only if, the foam core hulls are well built, it would be a good project. But built by someone who doesn’t understand that plywood has to be fully epoxy sealed, (all sides / edges before even fitting to the boat, ) I suspect not. Shame , nice design, and replacing most / probably all the ply is still a doable project
I’ll be honest if I got the boat for what I offered. I was willing to do the work and take on the restoration. But he ghosted the time. Wasn’t interested in a serious buyer who knew what they were tanking about.
if you are staying close to shore or using it for a day sailor good boat for that. if you think its a good world cruise, not a good idea, I call pontoon boats death traps.
They’ve painted over everything instead of fixing it, since they are going to sell it. You should stop trying to talk yourself into this….. it’s like putting lipstick on a pig!
Great video and very informative to not act on emotion, no matter how much you want it. Well done. Hoe yas dont get the $9k fine, each offense, for flying drone in restricted air etc....
Very few people can afford the million dollar plus prices of dream catamarans. With that much rot you are committing to a multi year project on the hard with all the costs associated.
@TheMerTheMan I wouldn't even look at a ply/glass boat. Most will have rot, if they don't have it when you look it's a guarantee that they will get it down the track.
Yea, there was a lot of excitement though and such a long distance travelled to see the boat. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but surveying the whole vessel

Yeah it seems that boat had a few issues! 😅 hope your friend didn’t pay too dollar for it like he was asking. Or were they uninformed?
Disgraceful attempt to hide the rot with new paint and suck in an inexperienced buyer. karma awaits.
Buy your self a moisture meter if you’re going to be looking at more boats like this one, wall worth the investment
Ha, my comment, and experience

Thanks heaps for tuning in man! Appreciate the support 🙏🏼
When you found that rot I thought of Marks renovation of a Wharram 42 (Wilding Sailing)...plenty of rot and water coming out of the hulls!
Yeah, it definitely wasn't the cleanest boat I've ever seen. Rot is always a concern with any boats with ply
Down to one suspect patch of Dry rot now. So not so bad. 🤞🏼👍🏻🧙🏼♂️

We missed your videos. Welcome back.
Cheers for watching! Yea it’s been some time. Keen to get back into it
You did well to leave that cat behind you.
Great video! It shows the emotional rollercoaster that boat shopping can put you on....
Thanks mate. Yea I’ve certainly been on a roller coaster in the realms of looking for a boat. It’s no easy task
Congratulations!!
Be happy and enjoy them.

You dodged major pain there mate. Maintain your standards.

Hey mate, looooooong time -no see. Been following you on the Tube since day #1. Hope your doing ok, hope your dads doing well too.
Thanks for words. appreciate you being here from the start! Yea he’s doing good
is why i like my snapdragon 24 as it a full fibreglass hull no ply at all apart from interior lol
Yeah it's been a while, was wondering what happened to you the other week, luckily I'm still subscribed 👍

If painting over rot, is an indication of how the seller maintains his boat... Well, it's not rocket science... Good decision to walk away...

Glad your brain beat your heart. Crowthers are a great design but the problem most are built by backyard builders which lets the name down.
Yea you wouldn’t be wrong. I loved the design a lot. I would have been so stoked if it turned out to be in good Nic

never buy a roten boat

NEXT. Don’t even consider this boat.
I'll tell you after a few minutes of watching: do not buy this boat!
Yea, there was a lot of excitement though and such a long distance travelled to see the boat. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but surveying the whole vessel
Definitely Not a luxury boat old tired & full of issues. 😊
