This scene is a great example of the mistake people made with cgi early on. With the robe on, the creature actually doesn't look terrible today, the tracking is a little off, but it's photo real. It's uncanny, but that actually helps. When they show the full creature is where the illusion really breaks. Because they were flaunting their cgi, not realizing how bad it would look in the future. It's the shots where the filmmakers try to obscure the visual effects that actually look better.
I think it still looks pretty good. But they are doing a weird 3d way fo shooting it i dislike.
To be fair yah gotta learn to crawl and walk before you run. The bad or meh cgi needed to happen so we could get todays cgi. Hell, for all he’s hated Jar Jar was apparently a big achievement and was pivotal in pushing that motion capture stuff forward. I’ve heard it he said that jar jar walked so thanos could run.
@@connorgolden4 that's true, it had to happen.
I would rather bang spider Smith than "bedelian"
Because the future is what they were really thinking about huh?
Is anyone just appreciating that Gary Oldman is just having a ton of fun with this?
I have to admit, evil just loves to get worse. Good memory, Mr. Protagonist.
He had played a similar role with Zorg in Fifth Element only the year prior-another role he visibly enjoyed.
@@capthawkeye8010 I actually read that he hated playing Zorg, which makes him even more of a legend for hiding it so well.
I watched this movie ages when I was a kid. I didn’t appreciate who Gary Oldman was. But even as a giant CGI spider, he did a great job.
I am
“Spiiiders!!! A giant legion of spiiiders!!!”
What smells like urinated whiskey
lol
How did I know this would be the first comment I found here?
We’re old.
Tali’Zorah’s reaction to this film
as a kid this was scary, as an adult its hilarious
I dunno. This is my first time seeing it and the monster is uncanny enough to creep me out. I could imagine myself being in a room with it and that is scary.
Gona be scarier after spider people aka greys show up 👽
I remember having tons of nightmares with that Spiderguy
The CGI is terrible
funny, we are alle same
Oh man, the nostalgia. I haven't seen this movie since I was 12, now I'm 28.
Same here. I remember my father borrowed VHS of this movie when I was younger than 10. Now I'm 27 and forgot how much I loved this movie!
i've seen this movie when i was 24, now i'm 68
Same. I remember the CGI being better. Lol
About right for me too. and boy does this look awful and corny now lol
@@TheDa6781 not how time works
Rest in Peace William Hurt. A serious actor who embraced science fiction movies as an art form.
Lol he was phoning in his entire performance for this film. Not that I can blame him though
Oh yeah he died sad day
A shame he picked this one to pay his respects
I didn't know that.
This one?
RIP and long live William Hurt (March 20, 1950 - March 13, 2022), aged 71
You will always be remembered as a legend.
There were actually supposed to be two sequels after this movie. If that happened, I wonder what the Robinsons, Robot, and Don West would have done about Dr. Smith with his spider bite to prevent him from turning into this.
excise the affected tissue, heavy retroviral treatment based on unaffected DNA. He was JUST bitten, so they could probably cultivate some healthy cells.
@@alexsolomon7991 Think the implication in the original timeline was he was able to hide his condition and pick off the rest of the family, then gaslight Will who was now alone into trusting him despite his becoming a large monster.
Kind of twisted was his implication that he didn't immediately kill the women of the family.
We'll never know. Unfortunately, I always felt this movie was such a missed opportunity. It had a great setup and cast, but the story was a mess.
@@cryogeneric Yeah, this is what happens when people try to add time travel to a loved franchise.
The thing is, when they were on that other ship, they downloaded a route to Alpha Prime. At the end of the movie, they uploaded the star maps targeting for the planet. Of course, they said they hoped the hyperdrive was going to take them there. So I wonder where they would end up. Would they be sent to Alpha Prime immediately or be sent somewhere else? If they did end up at Alpha Prime, I'm sure their next adventure would happen there dealing with aliens. Possibly being the home of those spiders and no one on Earth ever knew about that.
Just a weird mundane movie, the epitome of how not to do a reboot, remake, remaining- you forget the existence of this movie until you see clips like this.
Say what you will about the scene itself but I love the "the pain, the pain" moment. It's a cool little nod and reference to the show and is fun.
Same, I was caught off-guard as I didn't expect that to be brought in of all things lol
I thought the "never fear Smith is here" earlier was better but you can tell Oldman had been chomping at the bit to drop those lines sooner or later.
@@capthawkeye8010 Oh for sure! He absolutely nailed his role. I like that line too- it's such a great twist on how he used to say it as opposed to how he was now. I'm SO glad that Oldman chose to keep some of Smith's campiness when saying those lines too. Perfection! :)
He actually looked more real, creepy and menacing with the hood on
Totally agree. When he took the hood off, I'm like, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT
!?!
Maybe its just me, but this spider form of Dr Smith oddly resembles Robot in the Netflix adaption of Lost in Space, with the split arms, split legs and semi humanoid body, plus the color of the plating.
You are not alone. I thought this is the original. I watched Netflix for a bit till it became boring and silly.
@@Waragog As far as i know, this movie is the first adaptation. Also, the Netflix show have the benefit of more time to develop the characters and a more reasonable story instead of this human/alien spider hybrid stuff.
I keep catching myself referring to that thing as either Geth or Legion. Could be the flashlight face.
@@Waragog I watched the whole thing. It gets dumber as it progresses. You were the smart one.
@@theo-jamesmoulton2000 I see where you make that connection. It is afterall a good way to make something appear to be of inhuman origin.
Spider Smith looks like a Xenomorph.
Predator rules Xbox4life
What blows me away is that this "old Will" is played by Jared Harris, the son of Richard Harris. Jared would later go on to international acclaim after his portrayal of Valery Legasov in the 2019 miniseries "Chernobyl."
I never realized that the older Will Robinson was played by Harris. On that note, I will always think of Anderson Dawes from The Expanse (great show) when I hear Harris' name.
Dont forget his role as Prof. James Moriarty
It's stunning they didn't just chuck Dr. Smith in the air lock the minute they got back to the ship.
I remember seeing this movie with my friends and actually being stuck in our seats from that thing. About two years ago we found the movie on DVD and watched it again. Now it’s basically a feature length Try Not To Laugh Challenge.
I just can’t believe this movie bombed at the box office, I remember all the hype. Loved watching some of the re-runs on BBC 2 back in the day. I think iTV also aired some late at night. Only a kid, 8/9 years old. The 90’s was awesome. The cloths so colourful. Baggy yet fitting. Funny times. I remember watching this whilst on holiday in some dingy seaside town cinema that was built in the 1940’s. That sweat candy popcorn sugary smell, plus the musk from the carpets. This scene always stayed with me.
The movie is really bad its not all that shocking. Also when you watch the movie, the guy who plays the dad doesnt act the entire time. He is basically a wooden block.
It’s very believable why it bombed it’s a very bad film
@CognizantxNight not really? What it wanted to achieve for the times cg ability was lofty just in price. But other movies pulled off blockbuster stuff better. Jurassic park, event horizon, etc.
@CognizantxNight it’s really not
@CognizantxNight
Nostalgia’s a helluva drug.
This is the best version of Dr. Doom I’ve ever seen in a live action movie.
Gary Oldman would’ve been a great Dr. Doom in a 90s adaptation of Fantastic Four IMO.
Agreed
For some
Reason, UA-cam’s algorithm felt the need for me to watch this today.
Same.
Say what you will about the movie cause obviously its not great but I always thought the "Take all the time you want to die" was a pretty badass line
I don't know, but I find that CGI to be very good within the context of the movie and I think it blends very well with the rest of it.
For it's time honestly it's not bad. (And in my opinion CGI still looks kinda fake even today no matter how good it looks.) And granted the original "Lost in Space" 1960s show has very dated special effects too.
I think the cgi goes well with tone of the movie as well lol
Props to him for not screaming histericaly when confronted by a gigantic man-bug.
At what point during the development process did making the villain a giant spider ever seem like a good idea?
I think the idea was good, but the CGI was bad.
A giant spider is one thing, but whatever the hell that thing is?.. 😬
Glares at IT
Probably because the movie development team hated Jonathan Harris as much as I did. He ruined the original TV series.
Tomb Raider 3 would like a word.
Ironically, Gary Oldman was originally going to voice General Grievous. After watching Clone wars 2003, I can see why he was cast as Grievous, because this voice almost matches that voice. Specifically the one from 2003.
How was I not terrified of this scene when I was little lol
"Spiiiiiiiders, a MAHSTAH RACE OF SPIIIIDERS!"
That Spider Smith look like a cross between Darth Maul and that bug from MIB.
1:10 “Evil always finds it’s true form”. That’s true, look at Megatron (G1) he became Galvatron, and many villains have undergo many changes until they finally became what they were meant to be.
1:20 “You’re right, I couldn’t kill the man. But I can kill the monster!” When you stop to think about it he was already a monster consumed by greed and was willing to murder people.
Ahhh this CGI is timeless
I've been searching for this movie's name since 2005, thank you!
Not a good movie, but certainly a guilty pleasure for me. Love the score.
Every sci fi movie I watch I will compare with this in my mind. Nothing has ever come close. I'll die on this hill. This is the best sci fi movie out there.
Jurassic park came out like 7 years before and it's CGI still holds up. What's this movies excuse?
Budget, too much ambition, and a lack of understanding...
Lower budget and it wasn't directed by Steven Spielberg
Because at this point everybody thought that animatronic is done and cgi is boss
@@DOI_ARTS they used plenty of animatronics in Jurassic Park.
My guess is the original cut probably would have had a combo of practical and CGI but they decided to go with a full CGI Spider Smith or maybe Spider Smith was a late addition to the story and they added it in reshoots
Man, Spider-Smith looks like a video game cutscene without the robe.
1:46 The Pain! The Pain!
You ain't seen nothing yet
RIP, William Hurt.
R.I.P. William Hurt
Danger, Will Robinson!
DANGER !!!
Even though this is considered a bomb, remember this is the movie that knocked Titanic out of the #1 spot at the box office.
And for that, we are eternally grateful.
the problem here is that it’s wayyyy too ambitious. The concept seems like it could be cool, but there’s no weight behind the movements of the monster. it’s very jarring
This movie made a better story AND movie while I was melting from LSD.
Rest in Peace, William Hurt (1950-2022). You will be missed.
Was anyone else freaked out by the giant spider scene when they were younger and saw this movie on tv
I was
As a kid I was so confused with the time traveling while also being creep out and scared of that big alien spider
I've had a toy of this guy for ages that was my brother's and I could never remember what it was from. I knew it wasn't from Alien and it wasn't from The Thing. It drove me nuts every time I looked at it. This random UA-cam recommendation today just reminded me.
Holy moly, I haven't seen this film since as a kid!
Man I wish this was a better movie
“Spiiiiiders”
I remember seeing this at the cinema, it was awesome
RIP William Hurt
“SPIDAHS! A giant legion of SPIDAHS!” -Nostalgia Critic
There’s no way that’s Jared Harris’ actual voice.
Everyone was young at one time or another.
@@MrRolyat98
I just mean he has a distinct English accent and there’s no way that’s his voice doing an American accent.
Fun fact: All of Jared Harris’ dialogue was dubbed since he didn’t have the vocal scale to complete the role.
@@JustSomeCanadianGuy Actually, he played Gen. U.S. Grant in LINCOLN and it was his voice. British actors play a lot of American roles. Half the cast of BAND OF BROTHERS were Brits.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I swear he does NOT sound like he does in Sherlock or Fringe. I mean yeah age has an impact but the difference is so night and day.
Not gonna lie, sometimes when smith speaks as the spider I can’t understand him
I needed subtitles
Rip william hurt
This is my memorie
RIP John Robinson { William Hurt } - the only movie / show I ever seen him in
Wearing your ignorance like a badge.
I don't know why UA-cam recommended this video just today, but...
R.I.P. William Hurt :(
This is my first time seeing any clip from this movie. It's definitely not what I thought it was. This gave me Return to Oz/Never ending story vibes 👀
Rest in peace
Sir William Hurt😢😢😢
Ah yes, professor Moriarty in space
The CGI of the 90s
'i am a god" rykard is that you? Elden ring def took inspiration from this
I remember watching this amazing 🎥 opening day in the theaters! Will there ever be a remake?
I need to go back and watch this movie. I don't remember this scene at all.
Just saw this in recommendations. Never seen this movie, but watching this scene, I can seriously see Ruber from _Quest for Camelot_ going full alien psycho lol
I thought I was the only one that remembered that movie. What a gem.
Rest in peace 🕊️ William hurt 😭
R.i.p. william hurt
Rip William hurt
Yup... This spider gave me nightmare when i was child, and damn it still give me chill
My brother had the spider guy action figure, idk how many times I heard "The pain the pain" growing up
I remember how hyped my dad was for this movie when I was little. He took me to see this movie and while as a kid I loved it this scene creeped me out. Here I am years later and boy the CGI looks hasnt aged well. Film makers showed to much of it during this scene. I cant even say this was even fully passable for 98. Jurassic Park, and Godzilla had better CGI. I'll still give it a pass because it took Hollywood a bit to craft it. The 90s were part of the roots. Filmmakers learned from mistakes of the old CGI and made progression and how it should be used. This movie still remains part of my childhood.
So. Anyone else wondering what happened to all the little spiders he brushed off his body and face before being pushed into the event horizon?
They scurry off and die since the planet went boom after.
@@davhot4107 okay but they don't scurry away. They are extremely hostile........
@@brokenman58 L
We have no frame of reference what they do when young. Perhaps they tried to jump back on him, maybe the seeked the largest heat source, or started to eat something else. We don’t know.
The whole planet blew up soon after, and they went with it
ОМГ это же фильм детства, который я очень долго искал.
Gary oldman always play the villain
Well......He did play Sirius Black and James Gordon.......Two characters that I wouldn't exactly call villainous ......But, yes, he seems to favor the villain roles! Kind of like Alan Rickman did, and Tim Curry does.........
@@19TheFallen he said he wanted to do movies he could show his kids so he weaned off the villain roles.
@@19TheFallen George Smiley in Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy and Churchill in Darkest Hour.
@@robzilla730 didn't hurt that one of his kids threatened to never speak to him again if he passed on Harry Potter.
@@nicholasfarrell5981 didn't know he was in Potter. Stopped keeping up with the series after #2. The Potter movies were kinda like the retirement home for English actors, huh?
Such a great CGI... AS FOR B-MOVIE!
dude looks like the white laurence fishborne.
0:21 "I was trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku."
I watched this when I was about 6 years old in the theater and that spider guy scared the crap out of me.
cant beleive i watched this when i was little and didnt have nightmares lol.
This guy is just the meteorite final boss from Tomb Raider 3
This reminded me of when Leon fights Mendez in Re4
Screw the critics from back then!! When I saw this as a kid.. IT WAS FREAKING AWESOM!!!
Older Will Robinson is played by Jared Harris and my mind is blown.
SPIDERS!
I miss the good old blockbuster days.
Never fear, Smith is here!
The late 90s had some of the greatest practical effect artists to ever exist and they chose CGI? Stan Winston was in his prime, he could have made Smith look real and 20 feet tall!
The audio quality is terrible when it comes to Oldman's dialogue as the Spider Smith.
RIP William Hurt :(
Every underrated movie.
Everytime I see anything on this movie I think about the nostalgia critic review 🤣 "spiderssss"
I just realized .. John Robinson was the last one in this film to kill a bad guy ... He owes us beer. :)
when you become the ELDEN RING boss
this movie aged so well.
might have to watch it again. just ebcause it came up in time line means i need to watch it.
Didn’t realize this for a long time but the underscore heard here also appears in the 1960 Swiss family Robinson. Kinda cool if you know the history
I wish the sound design wasn't so weak, the CGI is decent, but the sound isn't synchronized enough with the arm movements for it to really click
I was thinking the cgi was not great but then saw it was 1998 and thought, ‘not bad’.
Mom. Dad. I don't want much for my birthday. Just a master race of spiders and the latest PlayStation.
1:25 when the frames drop in ur game
R.I.P William hurt 😞 😔
Looks like a good one for Corridor Crew to go over
Is Hurt rocking a hairpiece?
I really enjoyed this movie.
