Most of you know about the duel that ended Alexander Hamilton’s life. Ya know, the one with Aaron Burr. (raises fist and shouts angrily) Aaron Burr!
But did you know Hamilton also got into a duel with a future President?
It’s true. It all started when Hamilton had an affair with someone and then paid her husband after the husband blackmailed him about it. Well later the husband got in trouble for financial fraud, and some in Congress investigated Hamilton’s connection to it. One of those who investigated Hamilton was future President James Monroe.
Jump ahead to 1797.
That summer, Hamilton’s possible connection to the financial fraud was published to the whole country, and Hamilton blamed Monroe for the embarrassment. The two sent angry letters back and forth, and there was even a personal encounter where things got tense. Long story short. Things escalated so much that Monroe was about to officially challenge Hamilton to a duel when someone stepped in to prevent that from happening.
So who stepped in to prevent Monroe from dueling Hamilton? Why no other than Aaron Burr himself.
#americanhistory #hamilton #ushistory
How 'bout that twist ending?
Part of me saw it coming near the end.

Interesting, Mr Beat. I never thought of a relationship between Monroe and Hamilton, especially saying that Monroe didn't have as large a part in the Revolution as others like Hamilton, Adams, and Washington did. Also nice suit!
lol thank you. Yeah Monroe wasn't nearly as well known in the 1790s, but everybody knew Hamilton, so Hamilton wasn't about to waste his time dueling this "nobody" anyway :)
Monroe and Hamilton would probably have known each other pretty well, since Monroe was a major member in the army. He's even in two pretty famous Revolutionary paintings.
@@iammrbeat He said “I am not throwing away my shot!”
Burr: Hey, you can’t duel Hamilton! You’re gonna take away my opportunity to!
Hamilton: Excuse me, what?
Monroe: aight imma head out
I actually knew that. And Hamilton wasn’t the only one who despised Monroe. Eliza blamed the publication of the Reynolds Pamphlet solely on Monroe and held a grudge against him for the rest of her life. Once Monroe sought to “break the ice” between them and she originally refused to let him in (though people typically respected Monroe for being president). When Eliza finally let him in, she refused to offer him a seat and didn’t even shake his hand. She demanded he apologize for his “misrepresentation” of her husband and the slanders he had casted upon him. Monroe, stunned, muttered an apology and quietly took his leave never to bother the poor widow again
I loved that! She was such an icon! Though she knew Monroe first and showed interest in him before she met Alexander, which makes this even cooler because (and sadder for her because she probably felt even a little more betrayed)

Fun fact when Aaron Burr had duel with Alexander Hamilton he didnt ment to shoot him straight into chest but rather in a arm but he missed and later killed him.
bro dude should've aimed for the chest :'D
He regretted it. Lin-Manuel Miranda portrayed Burr’s regret in the musical. When I saw Hamilton, and Burr sang, “I should have known, the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me,” I found myself crying- not for Hamilton, but for Burr and how horrible he must have felt.
"My fellow soldiers will tell you I'm a terrible shot"

Burr: Grabbed Monroe, sir and whispered “yo this one’s mine”
Say what you want about Burr, he is by far is one of the most fascinating historical figures in a time and place where there were A LOT of fascinating historical figures.
Fun fact: it’s sad how when Alexander Hamilton got shot by burr because Hamilton couldn’t back out of the duel but when the duel started, Hamilton thought it was wrong so he shot first but shot in the air purposely then got shot between the ribs then burr realized Hamilton didn’t wanna kill him so burr started to cry and regret it all.
??? i thought burr did not regret killing Hamilton..
Nah. In the musical, there is a song called the world was wide enough and as they duel it goes "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 he aims his pistol at the sky" and then Burr's actor (i prefer Leslie Odom Jr, aka the person who oged the role as Burr) screams "Wait!!!" and a few seconds later he sings "I should've known... I should've known the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me" Those lines show the regret that Burr had. I hope this helped.@@HamiltonReally
what
The world was wide enough for both hamilton and me
Actually, the first hand testimony of the seconds at the duel state that both shots were fired nearly simultaneously, though they disagree on which shot was fired first. On top of that, Hamilton hit a tree that was behind Burr. Even if Hamilton had not intended to hit Burr, Burr would have had no way of knowing that when Hamilton aimed at him. This is especially true since "throwing away your shot" in a duel does not actually involve firing your gun in the air, as the musical describes. It instead involves holding the gun out to the side and firing it into the ground.
Historians disagree on whether Hamilton actually intended on shooting Burr, or whether he was attempting a suicide via duel, but it is clear Hamilton did everything he could to make Burr believe he intended to shoot to kill.
This is one of several major historical inaccuracies from the play that mainly serve to paint Hamilton as more of a hero and Burr as more of a villain.

Because duels are won by whomever is stronger (or more well-armed) rather than who's actually right.

According to Mysteries of the Museum, there were times Hamilton and Burr did had to work together. Worse example was when Hamilton turned to Burr to help get a bill pass to get money for better water systems in New York so the people don't have to rely on contaminated wells. Burr did agree to get the Bill pass and succeeded but not before creating a loophole behind Hamilton's back that lets Burr keep majority of the money and decide how the water system set up, which was just adding more wells that weren't safe to drink from. Needless to say when Hamilton found out, he wasn't too happy with Burr.
Burr didn’t want Monroe to steal his kill.
