October 15th 2018 - I had the pleasure of sharing a stage with the mighty Derek Gripper, one of the finest guitarists to have come out of Africa and a genuinely beautiful musician. The concert took place in the inspirational surroundings of the Casimi Guitars workshop in Cape Town and the instrument I played is owned by Matthew Rice and is the prototype Casimi guitar built in 2012. I hope you enjoy this video, I edited out the sections that were just us tuning but apart from that watching this should give you a sense of sharing that night with us. It was an unforgettable experience.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this possible, and thanks to you for watching!
MDW

yeah, as well as being brilliant, Derek is a real card!
Thank you Leon! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Derek is a complete boss and a joy to share a stage with!

Adam telerman thank you Adam! It’s always a joy to see you, wherever in the world you are. Much love to you and the family and all the best for 2019!
Yep this is about as good as it gets as far as a lineup, thanks for the upload! This wasn't my first listen and it won't be my last, masterpiece!
Thank you so much!
What a fabulous way to spend an hour or so.
Andy Howell thank you Andy! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Michael Watts I'd never heard Derek's Mali-infused playing before -really liked your new tuff as well.
Andy Howell thanks Andy! Album 2 is coming on nicely so far, I’m certainly enjoying the writing process! Derek is just wonderful. I love his playing and musicality. He’s also hilarious to share a stage with!
hey Andy, if you keep pausing the video to tell everyone just how fabulous it is, it seems much longer.
Coming back to this “Lord of the Hundreds” is truly inspiring.
Thank you Gilbert! I’m looking forward to having the album version ready for you soon!
wow! what an awesome performance! thanks for sharing with us!!
Thank you for watching Gaurav!
Thanks so much for this Michael! So enjoyable.
RADThird1 my pleasure! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful Michael and Derek, I need to come see you guys live.
Tim Lukin thanks Tim, maybe we should book a tour?!
Oh gosh! What superb performances. I always look forward to your videos with a keen sense of anticipation and I am totally enjoying this, much to savour here. When he asked for a bit more bass at 15 mins in, the playing became transcendental. Watching in short bursts, saving the rest for later. Thank you Michael. Love that medieval flavour you achieve in Lords of the Hundreds, that Casimi guitar has a huge, powerful sound!
DrustIV thank you so much! Your support means a great deal to me! It was a beautiful, intimate evening and I’m glad to have the chance to share it on my channel
Beautiful playing as always Michael!
Gilbert Walker thanks Gilbert!
MDW...Brilliant!
Paul Boden thank you Paul!
Such a great mini concert
Wanna have a chance to sit there, close my eyes and listen to the grand piano(guitar).
Finally, Your recording is soooo good as always. I can even hear the sound of mosquito that flew pass at 0:17
Beer Daosavanh ha! You’re the first person who noticed it! Bloody thing! I like the way you can hear it panning across the mics though so I left it in!
Initially when I heard it, I thought it was around me some where but then I thought that there isn't gonna be any mosquitos in this cold winter in the UK hahaha
Thank goodness...I thought I had one of those blasted things in my room :-)
Just perfect vibrations!
Shut Up'n Play Guitar ! Thank you! It was a huge amount of fun!
great talents, unbelievable playings and an amazing concert. the video would be much better if the sound quality was even half as good as the content
Thanks for watching Eren! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The plan hadn't been to record the show so the set up was a little less prepared than I might have hoped but it is what it is!
awesome stuff
Thanks JJ!
should have jammed together....
That wasn’t really the point but Derek does join in at the end - thanks for watching though Aidan
@@MichaelWatts but those few notes were such a tease; looks like he's not coming to UK in the Spring unfortunately
Funny and impressive performance ! - The "hippie-frequence" is 432 Hz actually. Does anybody know where this idea is coming from ?
A quick and depressing google search will give you all the answers you need
@@MichaelWatts You are certainly much more experienced in "surfing" than I am; but I find only rubbish and no real explanation at first go. Some of the arguments are "historical", but we can assume that we have only been able to measure frequencies for a relatively short time.
The song at 14:00 seems to be based off of a mali song that is also performed by Ballaké Sissoko on the traditional instrument the Kora. It’s wild look him up plz
Oh Michael, such a beautiful concert and yet you had to sync to the level of a bass player joke. As a 30+ year bass player I will forgive you because the concert was so sweet. Except for the creaking in the first song. Was that your joints warming up perhaps? 😂❤️ seriously though thank you both. I consider this an early Xmas gift.
Ha ha! Creaking was my chair I’m afraid!
@@MichaelWatts The chair is so oft as important a part of a performance as the instrument and the room. A relaxing and safe silly season to you sir.
What tuning where you guys in?
I’m in DADGAD, Derek uses all sorts of very illegal tunings
Who was the luthier for Michael Watts guitar? That thing is a beauty! Wonderful concert.
Phillip Griffin thank you Phillip! I’m glad you enjoyed it! The guitar I played that night was the very first Casimi guitars prototype and it was a privilege to put it through its paces. Wonderful instrument and a hint of what was to come from these amazingly talented luthiers
y e a h . .
I'm a bit late to the party. As usual Michael, beautiful nuanced playing. That 1st number "Between Streets" - I can't find out much about it. Own composition? Transcription?
Steve Hardy Hello Steve! Thank you so much! I wrote Between Streets shortly before flying out to South Africa for this concert and it will be on my next album HYLAB. Watch this space!
@@MichaelWatts Looking forward, Michael. I'll pre-order if possible. It would be great if the transcription joins your lovely hand dedicated collection.
Wonderful! Is the video sound taken by the pair of mics, or is it the pickup source used (for the Casimi)? Or both?
fransgreg thank you for watching! The sound is from the matched pair of Gefells, I was using the Baggs anthem in the Casimi (mostly mic) and Derek was playing into his Royer.
Estes son amigos De Dios...
Gabriel Acuña muchas gracias!
Very nice playing but the sound quality is terrible. I have my volume cranked all the way up and still not enough.
Well the plan wasn’t actually to record the concert at all - the mics were there for live sound but in the end I decided to see what I could get.
