Thanks for the Tori reactions! Tori was hard for me to understand at first. But as soon as I understood her messages - I fell in a deep love with her as a musician. There is some Native American references in her music - since she herself is part Cherokee. My 2nd favorite album by her is Scarlet's Walk - it's about America. She also founded an organization called "RAIIN" - the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. This helps victims of sexual assault seek guidance and justice. This was back in 1994. I have so much respect and admiration for Tori!!
Thank you Roskoe!! Tori is very raw and deep. Her voice and piano playing is everything!! I am late to the party & so glad other Tori fans explained her. Keep rocking!!! 😘 back at ya!! Go Eagles and Phillies!! I'm in sports heaven as I'm a Philly chic.
The lyrics about the “he said you’re really an ugly girl but I like the way you play…and I died but I thanked him”. She is stating when she was younger she had a crush on this boy who actually said those words & the fact she thanked him makes her sick. She is disgusted that she allowed herself to allow that kind of abuse to be said & the fact she was thanking him.
Tori is very open about growing up in the Church, her Dad is a minister. I always thought this song was about her really liking one of the popular boys who was really mean to her, and as a teen you want to fit in, but she never did, she was always different and non-conventional. And the "pretty girls" and those "Christian boys" were members of her Dads church who she tried so hard to impress or be part of but it never really worked, because that's not who she is. This is a looking back on her life, calling herself out on all the abuse she accepted and fantasies she clung to that weren't real. So she's letting them bleed away. I also feel the reference to blood is a nod to menstruation, and possibly a teenage pregnancy scare, but also the blood of Christ washes away your sins.
IMO the “Precious things” are lessons the universe provided for your soul to evolve & as a human self-reflect upon & grow from those horrific experiences. All things in life are lessons that allow growth when we actually reflect & dispel the energy they hold over us.
Tori emotes more energy & emotion into her music that if you allow yourself just to absorb the emotion, you will get the jest of what the song is about. Also Tori is from North Carolina however she extends words & draws out notes (while also adding breathing) to produce the emotion you will feel. I do suggest even after you react on video to take some time and listen to the tracks from the albums (of the songs you have reacted to) loudly with headphones & just take in the energy & emotion. It is a bit hard to do while doing a reaction so even if you are a but confused at the time of your reaction, try my suggestion later in the day. It will be nice to hear what you thought of the songs after you are alone with headphones & just let her energy move you into the emotions she will make you feel without words being important 😉 She is extremely healing & aligns your chakras if you sing along after you know her songs better. A lot of clutter is dispelled from your soul when you try to sing and breathe like she does in her songs.
My interpretation of the lyrics: “So I ran faster But it caught me here Yes my loyalties turned Like my ankle In the seventh grade Running after Billy Running after the rain” Tori’s describing how she used to run after things she could never catch, like the boys she liked but who didn’t like her. “He said you’re really an ugly girl But I like the way you play And I died But I thanked him Can you believe That’s sick” The boy she liked couched his compliment of her playing with a diss of her looks, and she didn’t stand up for herself but instead thanked him because she was so desperate for his approval. “Holding on to his picture Dressing up every day I want to smash the faces Of those beautiful boys Those Christian boys So you can make me come That doesn’t make you Jesus” The boys she’s talking about , whose attention she was seeking, were supposedly good christian boys (her father was a minister so presumably she met a lot of the kids she was hanging out with in church) but they just wanted to sleep with her and thought they were the shit because they were good at sex. “I remember In my peach party dress No one dared No one cared to tell me Where the pretty girls are Those demigods With their nine-inch nails And their little fascist panties Tucked inside the heart of every nice girl” She wasn’t part of the cool, pretty girls who seemed like “nice girls” but really weren’t. “These precious things Let them bleed Let them wash away” This is Tori letting all her pain and feelings of alienation from her teen years wash away. Letting go of the hurt and the things she used to believe to be precious.
I suggest listening to these songs you have reacted to with headphones & absorbing the energy & emotion she will make you feel without knowing the lyrics. Loud on headphones for real 💗 💫
Hi, Roskoe! Catching up with you and waving. An incredible song about female socialization and self-betrayal. Yes, her words come across clearer on her albums. I was sitting here thinking, "Gosh the words are clear on the album compared to this." Every girl of that age, or a grown woman looking back to then, understands what she means. No riddles there for women. He says she's ugly. She may not really be ugly. She died inside, and then thanked him for the tagged-on compliment. She's getting at the socialization and how it sets up females for self-betrayal. Frankly, I suspect it refers to gang rape. The music expresses the psychic tension here. She's crying, in a sense, with what she does vocally. She lost her virginity, in any case. She uses sarcasm and irony. That cry she does, and the growl of pain and anger. She's incredible what she is able to convey with the words and the music. She really uses the music a lot. Yes, her stuff is very deep. And often painfully raw and naked. Yes, the lyrics are important if you're catching live performances. Great reaction, Roskoe. Grandma Ellen, over & out. 💜
Hey Ellen! I'm glad you explained that & it makes a ton of sense. There's a huge amount of complexity & layers, when it comes to her songwriting..& I like it!
@@youmaderoskoe , well, like you said, she's deep, and I know I don't have all of the layers to this. I think it is important with Tori Amos to take the lyrics with what is going on in the instrumentation, because it seems to me that part expresses what she implies and goes beyond words. The music itself helps us access her meaning, and we may not be able to find words for it. Good to catch you tonight.
She is singing about the battle not being one the popular people at any given point in our life. The point in our life seems to be high school. She is being used and abused by the popular boys and girls. She is hating it now looking back and how she played along back than. The boy is telling her she is ugly but she plays (the piano) well…. and she thanks him for it. Looking back she can’t believe (now) how sick that was. The whole dynamics in high school of popular vs non-popular is in a sense a fascist regime where the popular people call all the shots. I feel the ‘precious’ things are those precious popular people and she wants them to bleed (pay), let their memories wash away and not being in their grip (mentally) anymore. If you want to hear her singing more clearly with the utmost heart break, you could check her singing a capella about her own rape: ua-cam.com/video/wWxZW2zj7PQ/v-deo.html This song always gets me.
@@antoniolopes4754Haha. Just kidding. I get it. You have had a perfect existence with no pain or problems or feelings (apparently). What is S-A-T-A-N-I-C about telling ones experiences through song? I truly do not understand the malicious nature of your comment. I do however see the darkness behind it. Good luck to you.

Hi Roskoe, here is someone you may not have heard yet. This one is my favorite of Alannah Myles, either choose a video or just an audio version, might have issues if video. It's her voice and the story/lyrics in the song that really matter. It's a song about Elvis Presley, I don't know who wrote this song, the reference about "black velvet" in the lyrics refers to probably hundreds or more portraits of Elvis pained on black velvet instead the usual canvas. It's a fantastic song and Alannah has a pretty voice. This one has a bluesy style to it. Her first Grammy was with this song. "Black Velvet" The video is cool, but not that important to upload, might get blocked. BTW when Tori performs live, she adds a lot of adlibs & improv changes that she is feeling while singing her songs.
thanks for this reaction - she's my favorite!

My interpretation of the lyrics:
“So I ran faster
But it caught me here
Yes my loyalties turned
Like my ankle
In the seventh grade
Running after Billy

Tori’s describing how she used to run after things she could never catch, like the boys she liked but who didn’t like her.
“He said you’re really an ugly girl
But I like the way you play
And I died
But I thanked him
Can you believe
That’s sick”
The boy she liked couched his compliment of her playing with a diss of her looks, and she didn’t stand up for herself but instead thanked him because she was so desperate for his approval.
“Holding on to his picture
Dressing up every day
I want to smash the faces
Of those beautiful boys
Those Christian boys
So you can make me come
That doesn’t make you Jesus”
The boys she’s talking about , whose attention she was seeking, were supposedly good christian boys (her father was a minister so presumably she met a lot of the kids she was hanging out with in church) but they just wanted to sleep with her and thought they were the shit because they were good at sex.
“I remember
In my peach party dress
No one dared
No one cared to tell me
Where the pretty girls are
Those demigods
With their nine-inch nails
And their little fascist panties
Tucked inside the heart of every nice girl”
She wasn’t part of the cool, pretty girls who seemed like “nice girls” but really weren’t.
“These precious things
Let them bleed
Let them wash away”
This is Tori letting all her pain and feelings of alienation from her teen years wash away. Letting go of the hurt and the things she used to believe to be precious.

I dont think it has anything to do with her being a woman. It's about bullying. I mean everything she describes can happen to men too and it does.
