Kung fu legend Bruce Lee's old home in Hong Kong's Kowloon Tong has been demolished to make way for a Chinese studies centre.
Developers said they discovered structural problems in the building that made maintaining it unfeasible.
The Yu Pang-lin Charitable Trust, which owns the building, said a mosaic left by Bruce Lee would be retained on a wall outside the mansion, and that four window frames from the two-storey building will be preserved.

Should have preserved the building as museum in memory of Bruce Lee. He was the first Chinese international megastar
Tell that to his widow, his daughter, the grandkids from his daughter (Brandon hadn't his own), nah they're silent about it, I mean they earned their quiet lives outside of showbiz.
@abar rolugos China is not involved in this. Stop your lies.
abar rolugos
Except there is huge museum and biggest Bruce Lee Statue in China.
@abar rolugos HK HISTORY ? WHAT HK HISOTRY? YOU SHOULD SAY CHINAS HISTORY NOT HK HISTORY
LASummer if china controled Hk,how can these protestors so active?
this is the saddest thing ever. Bruce Lee was a legend, there will never be another Bruce Lee. If that is not history what is?
This is worse than when Bruce died? Or when his son died?
His HK home has got nothing of his left. Only concrete walls. Seattle home is where the treasures are
@History Teacher they both created history, each in their own field.
@@MrJermson it's where he was born ang grew up!
Was his home, then a brothel! Now a studies center... life is so funny...
😂👍
When did it become a brothel? You got a link?
fat loser 69 1:56 says that it once was a short stay love hotel
@@Yjn61 i didn't actually watch the video so thanks 😘
Bruce Lee wil haunt the souls studying in that building.
Joshua James Yap to imbue those students with his power.
The in my opinion, the greedy developers especially Lee Ka-shing are to be blamed. Those tycoons grasps huge chunks of unused lands in Hong Kong not for the people but for their own gains.
I'm not surprised he's a greedy developer. It's in his name.
At least they’re trying their best to retain the buildings history
abar rolugos 0:51
Michael Reisch ....😂 They aren't trying to retain the buildings history whatsoever.
Michael Reisch .....Nice try 😂
Saving 4 Window frames specifically does NOT preserve any part of the buildings history.
That’s a piece of history gone , shame and sad.
@abar rolugos dont they try erasing history?
abar rolugos you’re not hk or Chinese of any sort, I don’t think you should be talking. The culture of Hong Kong and Chinese are literally the same(except politically). This is nothing political. Bruce Lee brought this culture to a more broad audience and the Hk and China both love him. Sadly his house isn’t stable so they must take it down
@@kevin8612 BUT Bruce is from Hong Kong.
@@kevin8612 Actually the culture is quite different if you actually look at it, do you not know how diffusion works mate?
Should have made it into a museum sad
Ace Victory it’s a way of rewriting history, this was no accident, they kept his home in mainland Foshan

I think Bruce wouldn’t want the city to be destroyed, just peace
Bruce hate US and its anglosaxon campanions
@TK Baha China didn't physically destroy it if you were logical and made sense it would be thr rioters of HK
@TK Baha fact check. The last i check, the kids destroying the mtr lines and public properties were hongkong very own citizens.

Yet he married s white, Anglo-Saxon blond woman and was friends with many other "Anglo-Saxons" including Chuck Norris and Steve McQueen. Stop trying to stir BS up!
I wish I would've known about his mansion when I lived there.
Yeah but Bruce Lee’s will always be immortalized in his martial arts films 👍 by the way, Greetings from Southern California! 😁
@El Guapo Bruce is also a Californian, born in San Francisco in 1940, a US citizen👍🏼
KT 🤙 Hey 👋 not too far from where I am.
Little Pumpkin Pie Hair-Cutted Freak Yeah I been to Seattle’s China town where he trained too. He’s buried there with his son Brandon.

Bruce Lee was an inspirational actor....ashes to ashes dust to dust.
I've been to Hong Kong three times, taken pics of this place, front and back. Now they are treasured pics of something lost forever.
would love to see those photos!
😲he died but it doesn't mean that you destroy everything that reminds us of him😣😭
I don't support this but Bruce is gone man has been for almost a half of century. So it does not hurt him non does it demolition his legacy. That will live on for as long as ppl remain on earth who would study him and admire him for centuries to come. So his legacy was hit by this.
I think not not at all.
One word sums it up Disgusting! I have respect for all who tried for it to be saved. The people who allowed it to be torn down should hang their heads in shame.
Why it never became a museum the worse part was They demolished the legend house
yes
"It is not a shame to be knocked down by other people. The important thing is to ask when you're being knocked down, 'Why am I being knocked down?' If a person can reflect in this way, then there is hope for this person." - Bruce Lee
To be fair, Bruce would have loved to see his former home become a beacon of knowledge and philosophy for children
Bruce Lee would not dwell on his former home being demolished but rather happy that it can turn into a studies centre instead. Be water my friends, no matter how the building change in structure, Bruce Lee will always be known to live in that same plot of land and his stories will not be easily forgotten.
Chinese people be like
LET'S BUILD MORE SCHOOL SO WE CAN CONQUER THE WORLD
It's funny that all those "fans" suddenly show up make petition and everything.
While *NONE* of them actually trying to take care of that place.
0:36 that building condition is *really* bad, and they even use it as love hotel? Really?
I'm pretty sure that if you could ask Bruce Lee, He'd rather have this place destroyed so they can make a new Study Centre
World Peace to study the path of Bruce Lee, how he walked and thought.
i just find out about this i think that his family take care about everything.if only time machine exist
Just to set the record straight. 41 Cumberland Road, Kowloon Tong was bought by Bruce Lee after Raymond Chow secured a loan for Bruce in 1972 after the success of his 2nd picture ' Fist Of Fury.' Prior to that, Bruce and family had been living in a temporary but cramped accommodation at 2 Wan Man Sunlight Gardens. When Lee died in 1973, Linda and the children very quickly moved out of the property and returned to the United States. The property was later sold on and for many years was a " Love Hotel". Much of the original structure was spoiled by being bricked up and the Japanese style garden turned into a car parking area. Although the original Murals on the garden walls did remain. I'm sure they have since been removed whilst it has been demolished. In the video all that remains is the recognizable wavy motif on the outside wall by the entrance. Personally, I'm glad that it has gone as its reputation as Bruce's home had become sullied by its use as a brothel and it had fallen into a very bad state. The Hong Kong government have only recently acknowledged the positive impact Bruce Lee had by allowing a statuette in the harbor bay area. When Lee died his reputation became questionable in Hong Kong as it became known that he used cannabis and he died in an apartment with a woman who was not his wife. The old guard in HK government didn't feel he was worth remembering. That view of course has changed considerably since.
I just can’t see sufficient demand for a “Chinese studies centre”, whatever that is. In a few years it’ll probably be the site of a brand new high-rise.
Sad, but probably.
Bruce Lee’s first dojo location in Seattle/UW area is now a Jack In The Box.
his dojo in los angles as reopened and you can take classes there.

Das ist wirklich sehr schade und traurig, dass Bruce Lees Haus nicht als Museum umgebaut worden ist.
In dem Haus stecken viele Erinnerungen
Is the building when bruce came to IPman to teach him lesson ??
SMCP write a provocative title. It's title seems like Chinese Government torn down the Bruce Lee's old building to built Chinese Studies Center.
SCMP why you keep sow a discord towards them?
Imelda Chandra: Agreed, Bruce Lee only lived there for couple years, it's not like he was born in that house, SCMP is making a big deal out of it
Even in death he is a legend.
*The study centre should be named after Bruce Lee. That guy is a legend and that house shouldn't have been knocked down.*
So really sad Uncle Bruce Lee's house abandoned. Wolud be Museum for more people attractions.
I don't see his "whole body wax" at The Peak (Madame Tussauds). I wonder where did they put?

If the building had to be demolished. Why not to extract most characteristic stuff out of it. And rebuild it using as much as you saved from previous build? This is strike to humiliate HK spirit.
I am deeply saddened that BL home was not preserved as a museum...But we must accept it... WALK ON... And remember the legacy and inspiration of Bruce Lee for generations to come...RIP BRUCE LEE...😥
The dragon lives on in memories.
This hurts my soul
Why do it now when there is the protest going on
Protest is not all of HongKong ,but all of news reports. Actually the scale of the protest has become smaller and more violent
only 10% protesting, and shows all media like it's 100% to brainwashed all over country. It's the same on philippines and only small protesting and the US help the protester., then it's starting to destroy philippines after Marcos get down as a President then it's starting to get poorer. Luckily we have duterte now who remove those brainless idiot Aquino president family, cleaning their drugs/criminal. They're the reason of the protest to remove the great president before.
Witch Doctor the way you overglorify an evil person just because you hate USA is sickening.
if we stopped all work every time there was a protest than we'd never get anything done.
Gela A so I assume Durete is also supported by USA huh ?
Absolutely shocking. Disgraceful behaviour. That place should’ve been preserved.
Just for education you tear down one of the most legendary martial artists home that’s bullsht
Ironically, in the movie"Way of the Dragon", Bruce Lee had played a Chinese country bumkin who had come to Rome, and his Uncle's daughter had taken him to this elaborate garden theme park and told him a king had built it to show his eternal love for his wife. "All this to show love. What do you think?" "I would have knocked it down, built some apartments and charge rent." A very Chinese response. Now, life imitates art.
It would be fully furnished, preserved and put on display had Bruce Lee had connection to the CCP.
Who would know Hong Kong without Bruce Lee and without Jackie Chan? They are ones, people will remember first when they asked, who is a famous Chinese? Without Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan I would never had learned martial arts. Without them, I never would have visited Hong Kong. And they gave me the inspiration to learn Chinese and travel to China. Such a shame Hong Kong could not find a place for the traditional houses, which Jackie Chan wants to give the city as a gift and the only solution was to give them to Singapore. And what a shame they didn't make a museum of Bruce Lee's house. Some weeks before I went through the street and passing the mansion. In a small park nearby I made a rest, it was raining and it made me really sad.
Gone but not forgotten. RIP
What was the actual address of this house are there any photos of it when he was living in it.
They couldve used this for a housing projects. Poor HK people :((
At least this site will be developed into education center.
i know right
@@pithikoulis there's no right or wrong. There's only the things that you think what you believe is right. You think that's brainstorm but you just agreed with most of the people believe in western countries. They destroyed this house but preserved the smaller one in Foshan 🤔🤔🤔🤔
This is so disrespectful
How ?
I was expecting the ppl in HK to protest about this too! 😭😭😭
It’s too late for Lee’s mansion, it was so longer years ago, it was pure gold mansion
That's fine. It's just a building .
Hmph The Goverment they turn from something awesome into a boring school
The house can be rebuild again on that land and made to look like it did when he was alive with everything in the house that he had even if it is not the original house
Depressing
No it's note. Cheers up mate and look closely at the wood decayed scene.

I didn’t spot it, do you have the time in the video it was shown
not really. it's just an old house falling down. bruce lived in a lot of places and wouldn't have cared
JewTube
Fair point
How much did the house sell for before it was torn down?
At least is not a mc donalds or a gucci shop...
Imagine when they get to heavens gate and come upon Bruce lee.
Cmon its just a building and nobody cared about it until now. If we kept buildings like this all the time we would have ghost towns.
Tbh they shouldn't have demolished it. You can build a Chinese studies center anywhere. Bruce Lee has enough fan base around the world that this could've easily been turned into a museum of sorts. Big loss for HK.
Hong kong is famous for not having space for buildings, just look the buildings in hk are developed on highness inspite of largeness....
Anyway is a big lost for bruce lee's fans, however probably you wouldn't even know that was bruce lee's house if is not of this video...
A. H. The failure of HK fundamentally is their housing. Look at Singapore, everybody is entitled to their own public housing home. The locals dont rent house for cubic square just to make a living in the city. This is the real failure of HK government.
This is private property. The owner chooses what to do with it.
@@mclucky2216 The first CE of HK did try to resolve the housing issue. But all he got was mass protest lead by pro democracy groups and developers.
sad to see it go, when i was in HK back in 2001 i was nearby cumberland road but did not manage to visit this house.
If that house was here in the United States the restoration and preservation of that house would have happened years ago and it would be a sort of Graceland like with Elvis Presley
How can they do thisss ?
Once a historical place turned into a brothel and now totally demolished...😔😔😔😔😔😔this is so sad! I went to visit this place twice months ago...
Sure no enough people who don't accept the demolition. The building looks so damaged, not even to build a little museum
Because on papers issue, the government demolished the legend house. Shame on you!!!
It was not structurally sound according to inspectors plus after it became a love hotel they remodeled everything and completely changed the home inside and out. It would be cheaper to find the original blueprints and build a new one.
Hong Kong Government should of Bought it and turned it into a Museum for Bruce Lee and it could of been like Graceland in the USA that thousands and thousands visit each year for Elvis, Bruce Lee has Millions and Millions of Fans around the Globe and the HK Government could of cashed in on that Tourist Market. Well maybe now they should paint a Bruce Lee Mural on the front wall of the studies center there now to let Tourist know it was the site of Bruce's old house.
How this building wasn’t turned into a museum in 1973 is beyond me!??? 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
He's been gone nearly fifty years. Buildings in HK are torn down and new ones built in their place all the time. Look at a book called Hong Kong Now and Then. You'll see entire blocks/neighbourhoods replaced in the Before/After photos.
Really sad..
Museum in there should have been a great decision. Love Bruce Lee.
Kinley T
Same on you too. Because All his origin living place for His Legacy also and more attractions for people visitors over the world.
failed to raised the fund from the fans.
Wait I thought Bruce Lee's Mansion had a big front yard and garden as well on the property..
oh gosh, why?! i do agree with others here that it should be turned into a museum instead.
big country, the one who remembers their history
For some reason Hong Kong thinks Bruce Lee is cursed. Bruce Lee is HK’s greatest son but some reason his legacy in HK is just a mere statue and a figure in a wax museum. I feel he has angered some people and these people just doesn’t want him to be held in a high regard. Bruce Lee tourism would bring legions of fans all over the world to HK. He’s legendary status is on par with Elvis Presley, everyone travels to Memphis for the Elvis Graceland tour.
Absolut true! It would be a place more people want to go than Shao Lin monastry. Ups, maybe that's the reason?
Shannon Lee tried her hardest to save it 🤥🤥🤥
At least name the new building after him...
That is so sad....they demolished not only a mansion but they demolished a memory
I bet this has something to do with HK's megarich who keeps a large portion of their wealth as HK's very limited very prime real estate. They own almost all real estate property in HK and cynically want to keep them as liquid as possible. A heritage designation would mean the property wouldn't be open to redevelopment, so they certainly don't want that. Carrie Lam has made the property owning oligarchs her target, but what with the protests, it's too late at this point, even if she could have done something.
yeah HK can't afford to have too much heritage listings, they don't have the space for it .
After they killed him, now they try to erase his memory.
Exactly 🤞
Should have make it a tourist spot.
I love Bruce Lee since I was young, hes the world most powerful Marshall arts master. I proud of him and his memorial must be preserve forever. Better for carrie lam to be ousted, than to demolished Bruce Lee's memorial.
If they are serious in preserving that house, the charity funds they collected should be used to buy it from the original owner? or am i missing something?
Bruce Lee is a renegade hero of the masses, an iconoclast who broke unfair rules. He is an entertainer first and foremost, and that will always be how he is primarily portrayed, because a deeper look at his life would be dangerous to those who abuse their power.
Some would say that he would support current authorities, but when you study his views and writings, he was all for freedom. His family escaped tyranny. He grew up a rebel. He taught a "forbidden" art to people from all races and walks of life, and when he was told to shut up he fought back. He advocated fairness and equality in his films and books, and of course to defend oneself against oppression, by violence if necessary and as a last resort.
My question is, why didnt Lee's family preserved it?
they live abroad... i dont think anyone live in hongkong... and if they want to preserved... who will fund it?
also maybe the location price is not quite high as investment?
Linda Lee sold that house just months after Bruce Lee pass away...she needed money to pay her lawyer Adrian Marshall and to cover many other legal things.
I'm surprised why dont the family over there tried to reserve it and make it into a museum. People would love to visit. I saw a youtuber illegally went inside to film it. It was never upkeep.
Nothing that could be used as Bruce Lee memorabilia or homage was left in that building. In 1974 it was purchased from Golden Harvest Studio by Yu Pang-Lin and had a concrete makeover after he left its fate to love hotel operators who tranformed it into a brothel, taking away almost all of its architectural identity. In many ways, I'm glad it was demolished because nothing resembling Bruce Lee's stuff was left after the building had its concrete makeover.
Very Sad ! Bruce Lee always in our heart, Hong Kong spirit, near die !!
So sad....I m Indian but in my childhood when I first heard of Chinese Actor name is Bruce Lee.we used to watch his films on tv & fight like that in home.....

I wonder what would Bruce Lee think of the current HK China situation
He would drop all rioters

That's a shame! I saw Bruce in Agawam, Massachusetts ( the former Riverside Park) in the mid to late 60's star in the " Green Hornet". Bruce played Kato.
Read the description before commenting anything harsh guys
Bruce Lee is Hong Kong heritage. Around the world know Hong Kong through Bruce Lee martial art. At least in the next 100 years, future generation of HK still know Bruce Lee of Hong Kong through a museum heritage from his late house. Why the HK govt dont want to save it.
In Penang Malaysia, we preserve the late Malay actor P Ramlee's house to be a museum because it is the only heritage for next generation to know about him. It is tourists attraction too.
if there is a structural problem why is it still standing up until they demolished it?
rip Little Dragon Lee
Why should they demolished it
But, it's the owner's right to do whatever he wants with the house, I'm sure he didn't buy the house just to memorize Bruce Lee. I mean it's worth 10 million dollars now, a normal people would definitely choose 10 million over a run-down house.
Aw man. Poor Bruce Lee. 😢
