As a cosplayer, I have never had a photographer do a full photoshoot for free so idk what that petty cosplayer is talking about. I've had some inexpensive shoots done because the photographer was new and was trying to build up experience, but NEVER free.
@Just Me yep. did a crossplay as Super Pochaco and got a "free photoshoot" offer. politely declined. i know what goes on there, mister body odor with a camera.
So I’ve done full shoots for free but only for friends or groups I was a part of. I also knew photogs who would do free sessions but they wouldn’t do any edits and it was VERY basic.

That free photography one reminds me of the cheap asses I’m in a band with. At a venue we play at a lot there’s a really good photographer that took a bunch of pictures of us playing and sent them to us for free because he enjoyed our music. I asked him what he charges and it was somewhere around just $50. My band is 3 people in total so splitting that evenly is barely anything. My drummer goes “that’s way too much for pictures, I can find someone to do them for free”, and the guitarist goes “yea I’m with him. Why should we pay for them when we can get just as good pictures somewhere else”. Coming from the person who’s mother has a art business as her primary spot he of income. Like god damn we are all adults and work full time. $50 to help another local artist we are friends with and getting some amazing pictures to use for promotion is a rather insignificant amount of money.

if you’re an artist and want to take commissions:
1. ask for payment FIRST. either the whole thing or a portion of the price. this will scare away people like the ones seen in the video, and will guarantee that you get at least something for your time and effort.
2. always stand your ground and do not drop your prices. if a customer can’t meet your price, they don’t deserve your art.
3. watermark EVERYTHING. sketches, any process pictures you send through, and definitely anything you post on your account. make the watermark big and hard to remove, preferably on the main focus of the picture. this will hopefully prevent most art thieves, though it won’t do much about tracers, unfortunately.
it sucks how much we have to do just to earn some recognition for our art, but this is just how things are. no matter what, don’t be discouraged and don’t let these assholes bully you into doing things you don’t want to do. good luck out there
