The Kodiak still won't start right. Incompatible parts? Starter? Frustration level 10!

The 2001 Yamaha Kodiak 400 has been making a terrible noise when I try to start it. The noise has been getting progressively worse, but now it's really bad. So bad, that occasionally it won't turn over at all and I have to try multiple times. I thought it was with starter at first, now I'm inspecting 1-way bearings, but I'm still having issues. Hopefully I can find the source of this noise!
I know I said in the first video that it was a 2002, but turns out I was wrong and this is a 2001. That one year difference is going to be a pretty big deal when I start ordering parts...

This starting system is very similar in all the Kodiaks around this age, and is even similar in the Grizzly models.
