Gnomageddon was an online action game developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4 (PS4). The project originated as a small demo made during a game jam at a division of Sony San Diego, and was gradually expanded upon. The game was planned to be free to play with optional microtransactions, and would have featured three game modes as well as six classes of gnome. The game's main mode would have been a standard death match mode that pitted teams of good and evil gnomes against each other. The game was ultimately cancelled due to the studio as a whole not bringing in enough revenue, which was partly due to Sony San Diego's MOBA game Kill Strain under performing.

Honestly? The idea of a garden gnome game sounded incredibly stupid but the more I learned about it the more fun it sounded. We need more games that aren't afraid to be silly and whimsical.

You'd be surprised. As someone who worked with a indie group no matter how amazing a game sounded it always lost to the zombie games.
It got to the point where I gave up. So, as a joke I pitched a game where you're a gold fish trying to solve a murder. Only you were the murderer and you didn't know it due to your poor goldfish memory. That somehow won that pitch session but wound up destroying the group.

So an awful, aimless pile of dudebro-bait trash that was painfully generic from its very inception brought down an innovative, colorful, unique game full of potential just by.. existing.
    Well, that's depressing.

Yikes this is the first time I've heard of Kill Strain. I would agree with their developers, Sony not supporting them caused their own demise. Then again I think my PS Vita feels the same way. I know everyone has been all about Sony (for the most part) since the extremely successful launch of the PS4 but this is two large instances of Sony not backing its own products and the consumers losing out.

That game looked super interesting and had potential to be a prominent Playstation series and could have easily saved SD Studios. So wait they killed an entire Studio because of a failure of a single game. Didn't give all the materials back to their creators. And then proceeded to kill off any chance of a completely unrelated game.

  • @NotAllowedNearMilfs

This kind of story just connects with me on a deeeep level. As a student/freelance game artist and designer, i have witnessed all too often cases where a smaller team's innovative game idea gets kicked aside to fund or support another team's more standard, follow-the-trend game concept.
Yeah, i get that it's a safer and more optimal use of manpower, but it's just kind of heartbreaking that this is how most game innovations get shut down. How the market gets stale.
Ironically, look at how big of a financial failure killstrain turned out to be. Following the trends ended up making it just another nickel in the pile.

Kill Strain is another in a long line of examples of Sony not promoting one of its first part projects correctly. I'm not saying the game would have gotten a massive audience, but you need to do SOME promotion if you're publishing, especially if it's a multiplayer title.
Hell, if Microsoft can both to devote promotion to Phantom Dust, Sony should be able to promote their stuff.

Gnomeageddon I feel would have been right at home amongst the PlayStation family of IPs. Plus, it would have made for a great family-friendly game, or an IP that was suitable for children. Sony doesn’t have many of those outside of Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet and Sly Cooper.

Wow, they really backed the wrong horse. The Killstrain game, which I actually never heard of, sounded boring and generic right off. Gnomageddon meanwhile sounds super cool. You have the novelty of being a small fantasy character in an oversized realistic setting, you got bright colors, and a kooky story. Sounds great. Free to play is always dubious, though. And multiplayer-only is a huge gamble.

"Gnomageddon" would've been awesome I think, just from the stories, both the original as well as the sequel, having a Gnome fall for the one thing he can't bring to life, so he ends up risking eating black licorice, YUCK! so he turns evil lol, then there's the Angel becoming corrupted and mad with power from the large amounts of magic used in ritual, plus it looked cool and maybe most importantly, it looked original, different, not same old shit thrown out there, I believe they would've made back money lost, sometimes I wonder how business with decisions like that can still be huge and successful in other areas, enough to profit even amongst the shitty things they do like this

"Gnomageddon" might've been interesting on a SONY platform if it was a fleshed out game that wasn't in a 'free to play' model, with MT's and gameplay similar to Plants vs. Zombies. If they would have fleshed out the lore, characters, gameplay, and added a single player campaign focused on the story and had full level designs+character progressions with additional multiplayer modes in a complete full price game package, it could've been really cool/unique on the PS4 or Vita platforms, but the way it's format was conceptualized from it's inception+pitch made it too similar to other games in that vein. The concept/lore is pretty interesting/funny and it could've been great...if only they did some research on the market they were developing the game on, and didn't make it a 'free to play' model, I mean were they hoping for 'mobile phone game type' sales In a SONY ecosystem? That's kind of a stupid stance/mentality to take which totally IGNORES the core demographic of the platform they're developing for, if that's the case.
(I.E. if you're making a PS Vita or PS4 title in the format mobile smart phone games utilize, then you're already limiting yourself in terms of 'success' for how many players you need 'on board' to actually gain the momentum needed and turn a profit for initial investment, there are 68 million ps4 users where there are hundreds of millions of smart phone users+'free to play' games out there for the 'casual market' on the app stores of google+Apple, that's the only avenue you had to make a decent impact for the 'free to play' style games being made and even then you're competing in an enormous sea of mediocre titles with the same format+similar mechanics, whereas the PS4 and Console gaming ecosystems, in general, tend to play/gravitate towards more in depth and full game experiences, The large majority of users on the intended platforms tend to avoid 'free to play' gaming formats, which is why SONY has such a large library of fully fleshed out 3rd party titles that have more of an emphasis on single player+multi player formats presented in a full priced game....or in other words, have a 'core gaming' demographic....
...So IMO this project was 'dead in the water' upon it's inception as the team+ creative leads didn't clearly factor in these facts/statistics and were then surprised by SONY not 'advertising' it properly? No, I'm afraid it's the fault of whomever agreed and decided that 'free to play' was the format to go with for the titles, and they should've just gone and made a mobile game with the rest of the indie mobile game crowd or at least researched a bit + ATTEMPT TO UNDERSTAND the TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC of the intended audience and ecosystem they were developing on in the first place.
Before creating a game in a format the user base would NOT buy/play, They should have 1st answered these simple questions: "who are we making this game for? What is our target audience? What is the audience of the platform we are developing on?", because essentially what they did in the end was pitched a game marketed to fans of "candy crush" saga, or "bejeweled" to a demographic of gamers who enjoy titles like the "God Of War" series, "Uncharted" series, and "Shadow of the colossus" and were then surprised when the 1st 'free to play' model game failed, and were upset that they couldn't continue on with the 2nd 'free to play' game with the same mentality that would've ended in the same way/with the same results.)

It looked like it could have been successful even with a £5 price tag then of course cosmetic micro transactions (even though we hate them). Then of course it could become a ps plus game later on. Can’t believe Sony forced them out straight away and they weren’t allowed to collect there work. I hate Sony’s business practices, I’ve had trouble with them about psn. They have a good look but a deep down horrible business in the cracks.

Here's what I got from this video:
The cute and whimsical game about garden gnomes beating each other up was ultimately killed off to give the last breaths to an unappealing edgelord game about killing mutants no-one cared about.
The best chance to get a F2P Garden vs. Zombies game was snuffed out by yet another MOBA/top-down shooter hybrid Sony didn't seem to give a toss about.
