- Radius cutting like this is easier and cheaper because you use a homemade lathe tools. This workpiece is usually used to bend pipes or roll cables or roll alternate wire.

this man truly hates his lathe.
He is hard on that lathe but he doesn’t have the resources he would need to have an option. He needs to earn a living. It would behove him to cover the ways when he’s welding though.
I’ve spent much of my working life discovering what is essential to a design of some machine, and I’ve come to the conclusion that almost no one can identify and quantify critical characteristics. As a consequence, we assign the limits of precision as the tolerance on most features.
As a reminder of all this, I have a picture hanging next to my computer of a blacksmith hammering on the anvil, perhaps making a horseshoe. The blacksmith had no measure of dimension and yet the horseshoe had to fit and did fit perfectly. It did so because the blacksmith understood and recognized the critical features in that horseshoe.
This fellow’s lathe is probably an order of magnitude less precise than the equipment you and I would be accustomed to be around, and yet the results of his work is no less, and maybe even perhaps more precise, because he understands what the critical features are, and recognizes how to achieve the necessary precision through being clever rather than depending on perfection of every aspect.

So true as I have seen him do a lot of welding on the lathe with hot metal flying right onto the ways.
