2019 Honda CRF450L Dual Sport Adventure Bike Gets a 3 Gallon IMS Gas Tank Mod
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 чер 2019
- I installed the new IMS 3 Gallon Gas Tank on my 2019 Honda CRF450L Adventure Bike just in time to take it to Rabbit Valley. It went on fairly easily and looks pretty nice.
Update - I had one of the brass inserts start to spin on me. Now I can't remove the radiator covers, not that you need to to take the tank off.

thank you very much for taking the time to make a video on the installation of the 3 gallon gas tank ims i appreciate you help me a lot for the maintenance of my honda crf450l 2019 thank you again
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Hey your video helped me choose this tank. I’ll be installing it soon. Thanks for your video
You're welcome!
WELL DONE!!!! You deserve waaayy more subscribers.
Truth!
That's a beautiful puppy. Well done on the tank also. You have a KICKASS peice of land you got all the freedom and rideing space a man could ever want !!
Thank you for the kind words!
thanks a lot for this video -- I had a seamless install of the IMS 3 gal tank on my CRF 450L today
You are very welcome. And thank you for watching!
Ordered my IMS tank a few days ago. Another awesome vid John. Thanks for posting these.
You are very welcome. I do need to update it however. When you go to pull your fuel pump line and electrical connection, do it from the RIGHT side of the bike... THANKS FOR WATCHING!
Honda put that tank because they want you to change the oil at every fuel up.
Love your dog he's beautiful.
Great video, just starting to add the upgrades this week finally arrived👍 tank, exhaust, ecu, bars, signals and now theres snow! Last week the Royals were in my back yard hiking my riding trails
I've been under a few feet of snow for 2 months now. But still adding mods on the garage.
Thanks for your video John... Installing mine ims tank today and your video helped me out.. directions kind of suck that come with the tank... Good job man thanks again.
Thanks for watching and letting me know it made sense.
Just got my tank today...Will do the install soon! Thanks for all the tips here!
Have fun!
hey john/ you saved me once again from throwing the f bombs away on the instructions for the ims tank.
i screwed up putting the grommet on the tank and not on the frame! Thanks for showing the details. i know you moved on the bigger tank. i disconnected the fuel line at the top by the fuel pump and not that bottom by the hose. made assembly really easy
I'm glad I could help. And yes, disconnecting it that way is easier. It took me a time or two to figure that out.
@@JohnTYoung i did not need to trim the body pieces like you had to i wonder if they fixed the tank to avoid that. this is a ctf450 x tank im assuming its the same for the l?
@@markperrella5546 It is the same.

I'm installing mine today. Thanks for the video as it's always nice to see an install regarding all the little detail stuff. Hope mine goes on as easily as yours did. (Or so it appeared) ;-)
It did go on fairly easy. I will say that I need to re-make this video as it's easier to access the fuel line from the right side of the bike. Have fun!
@@JohnTYoung Hey I got mine installed! It was a pain!...had to take the ECU/Relay mount out to get it in there.....but it's all good now. Also installed the delete kit (SD), Yoshi exhaust, Vortex ECU, did I forget anything? Oh yes, new rubber going on too. Thanks again for all your videos, they were very helpful. ;-)
Thanks John, this really helped me fit my 11Ltr Nomad tank in Australia.
Glad I could help!
Great video, I am sitting here contemplating buying the 450L and this was a great help
Thank you for watching!
I totally agree about the 4gal tank even if those are US gallons. I don’t understand how it is , with all the modern options on lightweight materials, that bikes are so heavy and carry so little fuel. A 200 mile range on the tank of any bike should be possible as engines can easily return over 50 miles to the Imp gallon . Nice detailed vid. Thanks.
Thanks for watching zork.
Thanks for the tips. Between your video and the crap paper directions I got er done.
Glad I could help
And what a great place to work on a bike,
Cheers mate.
My driveway, I'm practicing for when I have to work on it in the field. Lol.
Thanks for sharing. You explained everything perfectly.
Thank you.
Living in North Eastern Thailand there is always somewhere you can get gas, so I would keep the stock gas tank on the bike
You may be the only one whose ever said that. ! Lol
I had a Seat Concepts seat foam and cover on my 2018 KLX250, what an awesome seat
Yes they are.
Thanks for this helpful video didn’t know they made 3gal tanks for that bike
You're welcome.
i put a 2 gallon rotopac on the back and did the WABDR. I thought it worked well though I'm still considering getting that 3 gallon tank though with my setup I can wait a bit and see if someone makes a 4 gallon.
I thought of that, but I like the weight, as much of it as I can, to be as far forward as I can get it. The suspension is a bit squishy to begin with.
@@JohnTYoung I'm still working on being a good enough rider to know it's squishy :)
@@jeffhanson6844 You got this.
Where does the gas cap vent tube plug into under the seat?
I bought the ims clear tank, I put 3 gallons in it and discovered that there was enough space to put at least another quart in, and probably more.
BONUS!
Great video, thanks for putting it together. Do you have a link to your 3-way t-handle?
Thanks. I think it's a Motion Pro I got from RMATVMC.
Great video. I put mine on last week and gas was weeping out of the o-ring. Turns out they sent the wrong o-ring. IMS sent the correct one but I’m having issues with it. The lip on the inside of the fuel pump housing is a larger diameter than the new fatter o-ring. So the pump won’t sit flat on it. Sent them pics and waiting for a reply...
I've heard of quite a few problems with the o-rings and whatnot. Usually they're VERY responsive to issues.
Hey John, great video! Just one clarifying question: The o ring/seal for the fuel pump, did you install it with the ring on the gas tank or did you put it on the base of the fuel pump first?
I laid it in the groove on the tank and then installed the pump. Don't forget to lube it a bit before installing it.
thanks for this very very useful video! do you know the weight difference between oem and IMS tank? the lighter gascap is from IMS too?
I do not, but I know from feeling them that the stock tank is much lighter. Also made of very thin titanium whereas the IMS tank is thick HDPE
installed mine yesterday. all day affair for details i wont go into. finally finished, put some gas in tank and pressed starter multiple times. nothing. my heart sank. put more gas in tank, and it fired up. phew! i didn't want to go through that install again. my test ride was fine. no leaks. i topped off tank, shook the bike back and forth and let the fuel settle and put more in. did that twice. fired up bike again and noticed fuel dripping out of what i guess is an overflow tube or possibly the breather tube. siphoned out gas to about one inch below neck. no more dripping. i guess i will simply not top it off anymore. live and learn. question: did you do anything special with your breather hose on the nomad tank to prevent it from twisting or coming off?
I lost it along the way somewhere and just let the fuel fly when it feels the need. LOL
In retrospect would you have just put on the Nomad and have been done with it. I know you had done it a later video. Is the 5 gallon that much more useful for the type of riding you do. BTW, I bought a 10 450L primarily based on your videos and another’s video series. Out to CO next Summer!
I go back and forth on that. If I had kept the IMS 3 gallon I would have definitely had to carry an extra gallon fairly often.
So what’s next on the list, mines about 25 parts long now. Only five things added, waiting on all others to ship still, not even 200 km on her yet. To cold in Toronto yet.. Uggggg
Hello John, I have the IMS 3 gallon as well. Yoshi system, Vortex ECU, throttle tamer, and 1 tooth larger rear sprocket and a bunch other mods and all are your fault :) Kidding, great mods. How many miles did you get out of the IMS tank? I'm doing a remote dirt road run. Going to be just over 100 miles between gas stations. Thanks!
MPG is totally right wrist dependant. I average 40 MPG, but swing from 34-ish to 46-ish.
@@JohnTYoung I got back last night from my 1st camp off the bike trip. I got a bit overzealous and did 500 miles in 2 days. Great ride through some really remote country, but won't do that many miles again. Averaged 60 mph!
@@cartyross8603 The L eats gravel and fire roads for dinner! Your back, not so much. Rest up for the next adventure.
Hey, John. What is that tool you are using at (5:10)? I feel dumb asking. I'm still kinda new to working on motorcycles. I found something similar, but it has the 6, 8, and 10mm sockets built-in, not removeable. That might be lighter, actually, but then I need a tool for that other socket or two.
It's a 1/4 " T-Handle tool. Its got two 1/4" socket drives. I use it for everything, and yes, it is very light. www.amazon.com/Motion-Pro-08-0359-Mini-Pro-T-Handle/dp/B000WJFMFC/ref=pd_sbs_263_5/140-6776642-4992355?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000WJFMFC&pd_rd_r=30e031e4-323d-41ff-bd4d-ab3bc220f293&pd_rd_w=U8i4x&pd_rd_wg=QQoYn&pf_rd_p=7cd8f929-4345-4bf2-a554-7d7588b3dd5f&pf_rd_r=RFK9VWD63FHW4SR9M9AA&psc=1&refRID=RFK9VWD63FHW4SR9M9AA
Still debating what what bike to get. I ride in southern Ca. Theres a local mountain up in Orange County (Santiago peak) From my house to the trail is roughly 19 miles of street riding. Then to the top of the mountain (beat up fire road) is about 15 miles, eat lunch at the top, enjoy the view and do it all over backwards to go home. So roughly would do 70 miles on random Sunday mornings. I’ve been looking into a Honda 300L and modding it (most reliable) or a crf450L, or rmx450 with larger tanks and keeping it stock. Just not sure.
All goos choices. Of course, you know what I would pick...
Hey john, when I installed my Bajaworx screen, I didn’t put the spacers between, less screen flex that way. More than one way to skin a cat
Got up to 70 or so today. No flex that I noticed.
Great video thanks!
Thanks John
NP!
I'm about to install this tank on my rig. Does the fuel gauge and trip stuff still work the same once you get it installed?
"Work the same". Yes, it knows when the fuel is below the top of the pump. Is that the same amount of fuel as is in a 3 or 5 gallon tank? No. Does the trip still read the mileage - yes.
Unless you want more wind coming through I guess
Doing tank install also, can you tell me what milage you got before and after install? From 100 miles to 150 miles average I’m guessing
Nailed it!
Does the fuel tracking system still work with a new tank? And the low fuel warning light?
Yes and yes, but the “low” is just a certain level in relation to the pump itself and has nothing to do with a certain amount of fuel.
Why not go with the clear plastic instead of the black one? Just curious.
I didn't care for the "look" of the white. I tend to keep really good track of how much gas is in my tank so I don't ever worry about running out by surprise.
interesting, I wonder how does it suck the fuel into the pump from down in the wings of the tank if the pump doesn't connect to any tubes that go down in that direction?
The wings are fairly flat / level so that the gas just runs back into the main body of the fuel tank.
@@JohnTYoung ahh ok that makes sense! I was thinking a la Safari tanks but it is pretty flat, I guess thats why only 3 gallons until someone designs one with some suction tubes so the wings can go down wider than the radiators and such
Any idea if the IMS tank is compatible with the AXP radiator guards? I ordered the tank myself but was unsure the radiator guards would fit seeing that you had to trim the plastics..
I wish I knew but I don’t. Sorry. Maybe shoot AXP and email?
Thanks John 🙏🏻 I was actually planning to call them today 👍🏻 will share their feedback
do you remember the link to the all black ims with no ims logo?
The one from the video are the originals. I think all the new tanks have the logos.
Where did you get your 911 number? Looked everywhere and only sees decals kit. Just want the rear one....
Mine is part of a whole graphic. DeCal Works.
I’m good at math, lol. I had a bitch of a time getting one to Canada, but finally found that IMS does ship here but only by phone orders.
How did you get the o-ring to fit so nice? Mine seemed too big
Too wide or too long?
Well one side always pops out when you get the rest in, I just forced it in there and tighten down the fuel pump i hope it doesnt leak
@@coreyh751 Oh! Maybe they changed the size to something that fits better?
Was the old tank titanium ?
The stock tank? Yes, it’s titanium.
Do all the fuel functions still work on trip computer?
Stephen Mitchum Yes they do.
Nice taco
Keeping up with you is emptying the wallet fast, so I think you need the Zeta fork cap adjusters next. 🤪
Welcome to the club.
How did you go about draining the stock tank?
As recall I road it till it was about empty then flipped it over after I took it off and poured the rest out. There's a valve on the pump that mostly stops the flow of gas when it's disconnected. Mostly.
Is it better to use loktite on the screws?
The screws that hold the pump in have compression washers, so I don't believe they are nessassry.
Hi John t hope all’s well
Please could you or any of your followers tell me if acerbis 11.5 lt oversize tank off of crf450r 2019 will fit my crf450L 2019

Regards Trevor from Britain 🇬🇧
The R has a slimmer frame so I doubt it very much, but I don't KNOW that it can't fit.
@@JohnTYoung thanks for your advice very kind
Love the videos and your work with the bike

Better!
Damn, that tank almost takes 11 litres of fuel - just incase the Euro bros are wondering... Sheesh, now I wish i had a bigger tank
Comes in handy riding over mountain passes to get coffee.
Great video! Directions with new tank suck!
Thanks!
Would have been a 4 star vid...Bernie made it a 5 star vid!!!
Puppy points! I'll take them.
911?! Haha love it!
What's the address of your emergency?
@@JohnTYoung I can't believe I've never seen anyone with those race numbers before. So good!
Gas weighs 6lbs a gallon, water weighs 8. Keep the rubber side down
True.
What the CRF450L really needs are 200cc more.
5 Second Prank just der an r and make it street legal
Haha, the 650L already exists. I think Honda missed the target when they made a 450L instead of a 500L, but if Honda has a 290 lb 450, the 500L would probably be 310 lb... and then we might as well just get a 690 or 701.
Your CRF is getting a bit like Cher.
Not too many original parts left. 😉
Ya, but she's still Cher. And just like Cher, it's mostly plastic stuff that's been traded out. LOL.
