    Jason Lanier I got into Sony's system because of your videos, and I should say, this is the best decision that I have made!
    I shoot Canon for like 7 years (almost 8), and moving on to mirrorless, which is small and compact, especially Sony which grants you access to quality Zeiss lenses (currently enjoying my Loxia 50mm f/2 lens), this is just superb. ;)

  • @asintu

    ISO "performance" is a very relative concept in my opinion.
    1). I bet that when truly comparing apples to apples, pics from the 3 cameras resized to the lowest resolution of 12MP of A7S, they will look about the same given same ISO.
    2). If you bring ISO 25600 shots from the A7R or A7II into lightroom, bring exposure up by 1 stop and then again resize them to 12MP and compare to same shot from A7S at ISO 51200 I bet results will again be quite similar.
    Simple math really.
    Since sensor size/technology is the same among the 3 cameras, playing with the pixel size/count on the cameras is just Sony's way of offering more cameras. Not saying it's a good or bad thing, just is.
    Cheers,
    Alex

    I've been a Canon only shooter for a decade. I just bought an A7ii. It blows the 5DmkII away. It is an amazing camera. The in body stabilization is phenomenal. And, the dynamic range is better than the Canon. I'm not a fan boy. I buy what works best. I'll be doing my first wedding with it in two weeks. .

      J. Ward Hi J. The A7s does not have it. They will hopefully be coming out with an A7sII this fall/winter that will have it. The A7ii and A7Rii have it, so hopefully they will update the A7s. :) The A7s beats everything at low light, but I've been really happy with the A7ii.

    Hi Jason,
    Thanks heaps mate for the reviews.I am still not sure which way to go. This will be my last upgrade so want it to be perfect for my shooting styles. I own an A77 which I love BUT noise really annoys me. No ones fault but mine as I didn't know at the time I would end up enjoying night shots then. My passion now is Long exposures (using Lee big stopper and other filters) - camping under lots of stars and time lapses with that comes the learning game of using lights at night.
    If I end up buying the a7sii when it comes out, what lens do you suggest for the night shots (stars and sky mainly) and also for day long exposures using the LEE filters. I want the best this time, Price matters not. This one I will take to my grave.

    The A7S is amazing in low light.
    I own one, with a fast lens I can see much better than my eyes can see.
    The stills coming out are impressive.
    But the videos are even more, you can go at ISO 50,000 or 80,000 and get usable footage.

  • @joseangelhr
    @joseangelhr 9 років тому

    So the trick to better low light shots is based more on the ISO performance of the camera? I know this may be a stupid question, but...
    Is the a6000 a good option for low light? I mean if the a7s is a 10, how would you rate the a7ii, a7r and a6000? I've heard something about the cropped sensor having an effect on noise. But I haven't read anything yet.
    Great video BTW, I always look up to learning more from you and all your videos.
    Keep doing such an amazing work.

    • @thephotovideoshow
      @thephotovideoshow 9 років тому

      Jose Angel Hernandez ISO only effects how sensitive the sensor is going to be to light. Low light can be made brighter by opening the aperture or slowing down the shutter speed as well. But the wider you open the aperture, the less that'll be in focus. The slower you slow down the shutter speed, the more likely things are going to blur. So ISO helps to stimulate the sensor to be more reactive to the light that has been allowed in via the aperture and shutter speed.
      ISO used to be called ASA for film back before digital. Essentially it was a more sensitive and reactive film stock that allowed photographers to have an F8, 160 shutter and still get a shot in less-than-ideal, lower light conditions!
      Hope that helps!

    • @joseangelhr
      @joseangelhr 9 років тому

      Hi, The Photo/Video Show, thank you for the film background info. I do know how to work my way through the exposure triangle, but my concern in low light, I forgot to mention, was about the quality of the image noise wise. Specially with a cropped sensor camera such as the a6000.
      For example...
      How does a cropped sensor affect noise in an image, compared to a full frame sensor with the same megapixels?
      For example, a6000 vs a7ii.
      I've read about the crop factor, the effects using a full frame lens, it's effect on depth of field...
      But how is noise affected?
      Does having a cropped sensor affect how much noise you get out of the same ISO vs in a full frame?
      And if so, how bad is it compared to full frame?
      Thanks for the info, tho :)

    Jason, I was waiting for you to tell us your thoughts about which is better in high iso between the a7r and a7ii. from what i'm seeing, the A7II is a bit better(forget about resampling the 36.4mp). What do you think?

    • @JasonLanierPhotography

      @criticaltinker 9 років тому

      Thanks. Good to know. I'm switching from A7R to A72 just because i'm doing weddings. So my wedding combo will be A72 and A6000. I don't need the 36.4MP, slows down my computer and no one ask for large prints from me. Biggest is 30 x 40 which the 24mp should be enough. A72 also has less shutterlag... 0.22sec vs 0.36sec(A7R)

    The Sony A7s is great for STILL PHOTOS with no noise at high ISO settings... but when it is used for Video (which is the main target Customer for this camera) it starts to get really noisy at around 16,000 ISO. The shots at that ISO setting and higher (all the way to 409,000 ISO) you have to use a DeNoiser Software otherwise the clips are useless.

  • @nkaloyanov
    @nkaloyanov 7 років тому

    People say that the A7S is not much applicable in daylight. But can't it be great for portraits as well? I'm talking about indoors, etc. It's still 12MP, you can't crop much. But you can bump up iso without thinking about quality issues. Then you can easily shoot at speeds around 1/100 at lower light /not from a dog arse though/. Also, A7s can be a trigger for me noto buy cheaper lenses, as it doesn't count on IBIS (it is not that beneficial at speeds exceding 1/20) but it compensates a LOT with that high iso performance.
    I wanna make sure that a camera is quite capable in any conditions. A7R is pretty much the king over here but once starting at similar prices, I notice that A7S is actually selling now at around 30% higher than the R.

    @str8pipe 9 років тому

    Not to nitpick but I would love to know the exact readout at specific ISO settings. Pretty easy to say that the speedometer in your car was at 100mph but in reality only doing 60 :(
    I have 3 Sony cameras and there are quite a few annoying things I dislike about mirrorless and not quite ready to get rid of my Nikons. But we all use our cameras for different styles of shooting. Lots of compromise when picking a camera, choose the one that has less for YOU.
    Although with that said, I see an a6000 and a Samsung NX1 in my near future :)
    I know people say " I never shoot at these high ISO anyway, but if your camera could, you would ;) Same story goes with dynamic range

    Good points. I'd like to see all three on a tripod, ISO 100, shooting the same scene at the shutter speed necessary to obtain a good exposure at the same f stop. I assume the A7s will be the worst performer, the A7R the best, purely based on number of pixels. I expect no noise in any of the resulting images. The night shots I do with my Nikon D700 are pretty noiseless at ISO 200.
    For what it is worth I'm getting the A7II in 2 weeks.

      But then again the a7s also had a larger dynamic range so in theory the a7s will have the least detail but the most bright spot and dark spot details

      faerieaeryk They are about the same. A7ii will make up in resolution what a7s delivers in in less noise. You won't tell the difference if I show you a shot at 12800 iso from 7s, 7ll and 5Dmk3. I know be cause I tried them all together with the respected lenses. But you will see that Canon can achieve focus in tough lighting and release the shutter fast enough to catch critical moments. Are there any good flashes for Sony? How comfortable will you be shooting with this rig all day?

    I'm still at a loss on which camera, inbetween the a7s or the a7r. I'm a videographer with a low budget, so the whole lighting situation is ALWAYS a problem. Hence why I'm leaning towards the a7s. But when photographing, I'm not entirely sure as wether I should really give up the 36mp. I haven't hat to crop much in post, so is it really useless to have that many megapixels? I try to get my cropping straight right in the shot. What's the real benefit of higher megapixels? Ive shot at 18 and 20, and the quality is pretty damn good. Im concerned about downgrading that.

      Not yet. Sadly Im still haven't reached my target budget before making the purchase. Sony also released the fs5 that has all the specs minus the overheating and battery problem. Much better tailored to videographers

    Hello Jason
    I started to follow you after I watched your 10 Reasons video and found you very honest , not saying that I agree with you all the time but I love your Honesty and hope you keep it that way. I also loved your ISO challenge and I think the A7S rocks in that matter , now I see what you mean when you say it's the king of low light. anyways keep up the good work brother and hope to see you sometimes in Toronto, Canada

    A7S is a fantastic camera for lowlight but the the difference between it's lowlight performance and the most full frame DSLRs is half to nearly one stop (Depending on the DSLR),,,,so i think the A7S is surely the best in lowlight but it's not that much of a dramatic difference...

    What is the point of shooting all those grossly underexposed shots? Can you give just one reason for starting at 100 iso and slowly going up through all those useless shots. What are they meant to show.? Please explain?

    I am on the fence right now with the mirror less , mainly watching Jason UA-cam.
    I have no doubt that the a6000 for example can get great shots. But is it fun or comfortable to use... I am not sure.
    And here is why( after testing it a bit)
    1) evf- catastrophe, no fun to look into it, you can see the screen pixels, the feel is like watching a video in bad screen, and not like the crystal clear viewfinder we are used in dslr.( this is one of the main and most important things in image capture)
    2) electronic zoom, my god, I have no idea how anyone can work with this thing, and I really can't understand how pro photographer can work with it. Not usable period. ( there might be other zoom manual lenses, but haven't tested them, and even so they are not so compact)
    3) ergonomics, every thing is small, and the weight is not balanced very well.
    This is my main concerns.
    Against it there is great image quality and weight.
    So... is it ok to go with a camera that isn't fun and hard to use, but get great shots?
    Don't know.Still can't decide.

    Guys and Author! Im thinking about buying gear for weddings and other stuff. Im thinking about 2 x d610 with 35 1.8 and 85 1.8 (both G) or 2 x A7s and 28 FE 2.0 future Fe 50 1.8 and tamron 24-70 + adapters. Of course sony is more expensive but to be honest im doing photos a long time. And simply boderd by 5d which im already have. I know a lot of people will tell me D750 for its autofocus performacne, but damn i want this to be a liitfle fun for me as well (i even thinking about XT1 by Fuji but its not full frame).
    Im still confused A7s is old and have a lot of bad design ideas (like a single card feature...). But after all many people are talking its a night vision device... To be honest i compared 2 RAW files on HIGH ISO from d610 and A7s and i cant see too much difference - or i have BAD RAWE files. Please help me. :P
    Wedding, portrait fashion photography is not my main source of money thats why i wan to buy something nice also for me. But after all customore is the most important and this damn focus with leae4 can be tricky...
