Jim Green just announced that they are working on a more formal version of their baobab boot. The new uppers will include a natural and chestnut coloured vegetable tanned leather. They have yet revealed what outsoles will be used but they promise a more formal look.
@@cwr8618 Hi there, currently there's no known release date yet because they're still making a final version but Gareth has dropped a video on the main Jim Green channel on the stitchdown thuderdome. He's going to be wearing the new leathers for this year's thunderdome so you can sneak a peek at the finishes there.
I have used these boots hiking in both the white mountains and just did a grueling hike of My Katahdin. These by far are the most comfortable and durable boots I’ve worn for hiking in rugged terrain. I will never buy another pair of Salomon or any other brand for hiking boots. If you’re on the fence just get them. They fit perfectly and not one blister.
You:re right, no blisters. I drive for UPS so I'm in and out of the truck constantly. The razorbacks are kinda hard underfoot for that work. But the Baobab and any of the African Rangers are pretty much perfect for delivery jobs.
I've been working in these since they came out in the USA. They feel great on a ladder and fine in sand. Cement is fine as well. I have skinny ankles and they are a little wide at that area. The tongue slides to the side on me because of this. The weight is fine and handle well on shingle roofs. The leather feels quality and I have had no problems with water seeping in to the boot. At this cost point I'm nothing but happy with them.
Definitely a company you'd want to root for in this day and age. Wanted to try the RB safety toe but also read reviews of the toe box height not being very spacious. Would maybe have to talk to them since they have their semi-custom shop now.
If you have a pair of African Rangers, the toe box is very similar to those. In the African Rangers you can get a bit more wiggle room since there is leather surrounding your toes. If it is a long day in the field, I can feel a tiny bit of the steel toe caps rub on my pinky toes. On field days, I would alternate between Keen and Wolverine Wide steel toe boots, since I bought the Jim Green's (and Dr. Scholl's inserts) Steel Toes I never went back to the other boots.
Personally, I found the Razorbacks far too tight. I ended up returning them. The combination of the tighter toe box and my preference for quality shoe inserts with more padding gave my toes no room at all to move, and they felt too constrictive. If I were to get them again, I think I'd look into going a half-size up. The African Rangers fit true to size and aren't tight at all. The only problem with them is the sole is not great in snow or slick mud. Hopefully the Baobab will be a good Goldilocks solution for me.
@@CarlMurawski if Jim green offers it on a boot they’ll put it on anything in their range. I asked for the following on my baobabs, Black full grain smooth leather, leather midsole, toe cap, black laces. Sure it’s going to run me 259 bucks but they’re definitely worth it. I need another paycheck to be sure I can afford it but I’ll be submitting the custom order ASAP
This is a great video- just bought these for my wife. The comfort and utility are going to match perfectly with her preferences. That being said, I am looking into the AR8 because it seems more rugged. I want to do a lot of rucking and hiking in a boot that I can wear all the time since I live in the mountains. The AR8 seems like another best bang for buck boot being an extension of the razorback, which sounds perfect for me. Please review the AR8, especially for us guys who want a boot strictly for hiking and outdoors work! Also, Jim Green says they donate these boots to rangers, who use them extensively, so another great reason to review it!
I got my first pair of Jim Green boots very recently, Razorbacks, not broken in yet really and I like them, the build quality was better than I expected and the discomfort some people claim isn't as bad as I expected.
I got my Baobabs custom made with the STC last, little more roomier than the stand ASHM last. I've been loving every step in them! I am a proud owner of the African Rangers, Vellies, Shoellies, and Razorbacks with the Steel Toe Cap, but the Baobabs are by far the most comfortable.
@@michaellorenzen8200 length wise size 10 = size 10. The ASTM last (standard for Baobabs) is a little more narrow at the toe box when compared to other JG boots. Just got a pair based off your recommendation, I like them so far, you’re right about the instep but they’re comfortable and seem pretty sturdy. Thanks for the review.
I have an African Ranger, which is my most comfortable boot once I put a better insert. I brought the Razorback and had to return them because they bothered my big toe right from the beginning. I am intrigued by the Baobab but am also looking at the new redwing mock toe in green leather and black wedge sole, it is a thing of beauty. Decisions decisions....

I just ordered a custom pair of these in houston green/brown and the frog grip sole and I can't wait to get them! They'll be my 3rd pair of jim greens and I couldn't be happier with them
I love my Vellie's and have been considering getting AR8's but these Baobabs are pretty great looking and I like that outsole! Perhaps I'll wind up in that 'Jim Green Cult' myself but spreading out my purchases.
Jim Green is a great boot for the money , I own several pairs .. one is a custom USA Horween leather version of their African Ranger .. I have them in Cape buffalo pair and a Crazy Horse leather pair I had customized by Wyatt and Son cobblers .. and a pair of a custom Vellie run they did .. Gareth is a stand up guy and stands by his product.. and they do a lot of great conservation work and really test there boots in real world conditions..
I wish the African rangers were a bit taller in the toe area, or the construction was done slightly differently in the area where the toes flex (it could also be that I got the wrong size). If I use insoles that are from medium to higher thickness then a corner piece where leather is overlapped jabs into my big toe. Using a thinner insole fixes that issue though (one that’s barely 3 mm in the forefoot). The boots have an amazing grip on asphalt shingles, I helped family put a roof on a shop they were building and I was able to run around and jump around the roof really quickly without any concerns about slipping.
I've seen looked at a Jim Green and think, "that looks really good", but that's really the charm for me. It brought back memories of good old ugly work boots just lasts forever and such a joy to use. Most boot makers went where the money is and go fashionable after decades of success at the cost of quality. It's inevitable. Unfortunately like pickup trucks, the fashionable priced out the practical, so those who needed the features face increasing cost on their trade tools or in another way to increase price, they simply reduce the quality of the product.
I have 10 pairs of JG. Out of the 10, #1 Baobab, #2 Barefoot Ranger, #3 Buffalo Ranger, #4 AR 8" black. You know, I think I have more than 10 pair. 12 or 13. Gareth if you read this post, I'd like a comp ticket to SA and some Boerwors and biltong for Christmas. Carl good video! You're where I first heard about JG, so I think Gareth owes you at least a steak dinner for establishing a foothold here in America. Happy Fall sir.
I love my baobabs! They're comfortable, look great and they should last a long time. They fit just right. The only problem was a little sliding on the leather lasting board when hiking. A little rub with sand paper fixed that.
This looks amazing. I might pull the trigger on this one. I've wanted a pair of Jim Greens but their branding was always a little too loud for my taste.
Bought a few different jim greens. I Like the wide toe box look and feel (blue collar worker vibe). I bought a chelsea which was too short in standard size. Gave it to my brother. I just bought a ST razorback for work (great black Friday deal) to replace thorogoods. I've been wearing the roughout chestnut Vellie (awesome) replaced redwing heritage mocktoe. I would recommend upsizing for jim greens. Hope to get ranger boot next for a second everyday shoe.
I think their Vellie has a lot of heritage in it's own right. In fact this video pushed me over the edge and I just ordered a pair in the Khaki rough out.
I love Jim Green footwear, I own four pair. I wasn't too crazy about the AR8's but I really like the other models and plan to pick up a pair of the Baobab soon. They seem like a great company that gives a shit about their customers, employees and community; a rarity today.
These boots are a fantastic mix of utilitarian quality and a more pleasing aesthetics. I really want to try a pair but ive gotta wear out my razorbacks first and that doesnt seem to be happening any time soon. The sole is the part that i would look forward to the most because the razorbacks are so damn hard under foot but built like a tank and can take some abuse.
If it helps you justify, you arent supposed to wear the same boots every day, they need a day or 2 to dry out, it helps the leather last longer.. I have a pair of razors but im getting the babs so i can rotate them out
@@efatnas12 that'd work if they were my only boots, lol. I've got some whites moc toes, thorogoods, and a pair of Belleville 790g. I'll probably just go custom Jim greens for my next pair. They have some good stuff on multiple different boots.
My razorbacks lasted a little over a year, I ended up having some of the metal pieces holding the lace snap, and the upper wore through at the flex points. The sole was pretty much toast, and was falling off at that point. Altogether it was a great value purchase, but like anything else they will wear out in a year or two.
Definitely joined the Jim Green cult, ordered a custom razorback yesterday, and custom rangers today. Now I'm looking at the baobab and AR8 and waiting for my next payday. Might even get a barefoot ranger, even though I don't like barefoot shoes.
Love the look, overall feature & build. However I feel it's possibly more fitting on use on all terrain than flat hard floor. 3 months of regular use mainly on hard flat floors (12hrs per day ), big toe bone imprint on veg tan insole is still minimal, puting a lot more pressure onto the sesamoid bones. Possibly something to do with the hard fibre-board layer below the vegtan insole. Nevertheless, there's no blisters from day1 but I will need to wear longer to fully break in this boots.
I'm a sold Jim green fanboy. Razorback and the African Ranger are knock outs. I'm from Texas and if Jim green made a wide cowboy boot my heart will melt.
I wish I would have learned about these sooner. Really interested because I have veeeerrrry flat feet and have been wishing for a function over fasion type of shoe/boot made of leather. And that sole is very much what I want. Definitely going to check these out. AND they have half sizes over 13!!! HORAY!
I'm currently wearing steel toe razorbacks for work. The main reason i still wear them is that they are the widest steel toe in my size. I really don't care about the looks and there is a lack of comfort which is slightly rectified by dr scholls. I want that sole, but i question a narower toe.
I custom ordered the Baobabs to be made in the same last (STC) as the Steel Toe Cap Razorbacks & African Rangers. I also replaced the inserts with Dr. Scholl's inserts in that pair of Razorbacks. I didn't have to put in new inserts in the Baobabs as they were great without it. Worth every dollar.
1:25 What on earth is a "veg tan leather lasting board"? Does it mean that its got a leather insole? From what I've read, the Razorback has a synthetic insole, so maybe this is the distinction that's being made?
Wow, a good-looking boot with a wedge sole that provides traction. And at that price I'll buy a pair over a traditional wedge sole costing $100 - $300 more.
Carl, I am learning a lot of "bootlosophy" by watching Teik and your videos. Would one of you please review Jim Green's' top of the line Numzaan Boot? Thank you.
Looking nice boots. Looked at their site and could't found any Wide feet size. Some makers make already all wider a bit but this ones ?? Or If I'm EE then just forget?
I have to admit I like the look of these. A bit on the spendy side but still good. I also like the waist area. I hate narrow waist on boots and shoes because for my feet that is pretty much the widest part of the foot. So when a boot or shoe has a narrow waist they can be some times painful. So going by what you are saying these should be great.
Ok I’ve been wearing Red Wing 606’s for years. 606 pricing is currently $260. These are $220. I know they are different but for $40 more are red wing 606’s worth it?
he didn't seem to go over that, and he didn't seem to go over the breathability of this boot or the ranger. not sure if i missed it, but my feet sweat a bit in the rangers
i bought these hoping they'd be my next do all boots but the toe box is much, much smaller than the rangers. i even bought .5 size bigger and still had to send back. they did feel tough as nails. if JG does a wide version, i'm on it.
I have three pair. Stockman in brown and 2 African Rangers one black and one buffalo. I love the Baobab but think my next pair needs to be the Sholie in Houston brown.
Hey I’m new to your channel and I love your reviews! Being from Winnipeg Canada we need some good clothing for the drastic weather changes and the extreme cold we get at times! Wish I found your channel sooner. Lol. Have you ever had a chance to review Tough Duck? There a local brand that has been in business for a long time and make really good work clothing! Just wish they made boots
Welcome! I have a very close friend who moved to Alberta and works with the native tribes there. Tough Duck has made an appearance or two on my channel, mostly as a good alternative to more expensive brands. I compared their vest to Filson a while back, and there are a few other items I really want to check out this year. Welcome to the channel and warm greetings from the states!
I have a question - need hiking boot for Alaska trip (Denali hiking mainly). On fence between African ranger barefoot and this. Any recommendation? Normally hike in trail runners (Europe) but I think I want something more rugged for Alaska...
I've been wearing mine a few weeks now. They're still around an E width. They don't look wide, but they are. I'd say the usual Jim green is something like an EE, these are only slightly narrower. Still much wider than your average boot.
The waist part that you describe in the video is the thing that I hate about almost every boot I have ever bought. It feels too contoured and restrictive. The lack of that makes me interested in this boot, lol.
I love Jim green because of the width being perfect. my red wings needed to be broken in and were on the narrow side. Any way the only issue I have had with Jim Green in the convex sole. It feels odd stepping down as the middle toes and behind the middle toes, the ball of the foot touch the ground but the big toe and the pinky toe are basically floating. Now when I did talk to Jim green about it they were willing to fix it and they said it was not the way it should be but watching their you tube channel and closing looking at the soles I can see the convex on almost all of them.
is the toebox taller? i tried the razorback and while i could tell it was a well made boot it was also painful on my foot because the small toebox wouldn't stop pinching.

1:25 What on earth is a "veg tan leather lasting board"? Does it mean that its got a leather insole? From what I've read, the Razorback has a synthetic insole, so maybe this is the distinction that's being made?
I like the look of these thanks for this vid
Wow, a good-looking boot with a wedge sole that provides traction. And at that price I'll buy a pair over a traditional wedge sole costing $100 - $300 more.
Carl, I am learning a lot of "bootlosophy" by watching Teik and your videos. Would one of you please review Jim Green's' top of the line Numzaan Boot? Thank you.
Went with the African Ranger as a city dweller myself but damn these look nice.
Looking nice boots. Looked at their site and could't found any Wide feet size. Some makers make already all wider a bit but this ones ??
Or If I'm EE then just forget?
I love my African rangers. My go to boots.
Need these for work
What should you wear standing on concrete: New Balance or Sketchers "athletic" shoes.
I can’t wait to get a pair myself
Love JG boots!
Dude you need to come to SA for a holiday
i miss the logo :(
All you have to do is put L and R on the inside problem solved. You always get value with Jim Green boots. 😊
Nice boots and the price is unbeatable
Are they good in winter because i live in Northern us and wonder if i could get a good quality boot during winter.
Love the look of those boots. I live in New Hampshire, are these water proof for slushy weather?
he didn't seem to go over that, and he didn't seem to go over the breathability of this boot or the ranger. not sure if i missed it, but my feet sweat a bit in the rangers
They will be if you wax them, no? It's just leather at the end of the day.
i bought these hoping they'd be my next do all boots but the toe box is much, much smaller than the rangers. i even bought .5 size bigger and still had to send back. they did feel tough as nails. if JG does a wide version, i'm on it.
I have three pair. Stockman in brown and 2 African Rangers one black and one buffalo. I love the Baobab but think my next pair needs to be the Sholie in Houston brown.
I have a pair of those boots and like them. Could not wear the Rangers as they sat right on my big toes. Toe box was just too low for my feet.
same
It seems they would make for amazing hiking boots
Awesome! Thank you! Looking forward to your seeing videos!
Carl. Can you make a video about Urban Shepherd boots?
Yes, please do. Although I don't think they sell in the US anymore
I have a question - need hiking boot for Alaska trip (Denali hiking mainly). On fence between African ranger barefoot and this. Any recommendation? Normally hike in trail runners (Europe) but I think I want something more rugged for Alaska...
The next time I have my thorogoods resoled I’m going to see if the cobbler can do something similar to this sole
How's the shank on these boots? Are they floppy like sneakers or solid enough to climb ladders?
I just love the way you say my country's names. Say it again oooh l liken it 😂
Hahahahaha
I really like JG boots specifically for the wide toebox, so this is a miss for me. But nice looking
Those are really nice looking.
I keep reading that Jim Green boots are wide. I hope that's fucking true.
Now when I did talk to Jim green about it they were willing to fix it and they said it was not the way it should be but watching their you tube channel and closing looking at the soles I can see the convex on almost all of them.
if i recall they came out with an alternative version of the African Rangers called "BAREFOOT". seems like this might be more of what ur looking for.
@@PhatAssObese Yes, and I ordered them. They day they were released.
Waiting for your review on the numzaan
I have 6 pairs
is the toebox taller? i tried the razorback and while i could tell it was a well made boot it was also painful on my foot because the small toebox wouldn't stop pinching.
I absolutely love my buffalo African Ranger boots, and after seeing these I know I need a pair. But do I get these or the shoellie first? Arg...
If you do get the Shoellies order a half size up, as they are narrow at the toe box.
how's the sizing? would it be the same as a nike or adidas?
also, does it have a removable insole?
Carl you the man.
How’s the sizing for a wider foot? Arch support?
Ahh this one is good!!! I will wear it daily!!
It's so good!
Jim Green is best girl in most bang for your buck
My only complaint with the african rangers is that they are a little to short in the ankle area. Looks like these fix this
Ive been looking into some new blue collar boots, are these steel toe?
No hat toss :(
Damn, I forgot!!!
You would have landed it too if you did one
Could you do a review of the tyre razorbacks?
