Hold up. They talked about the rapey song... then when fake jake and fake Lucy dance in the hallway you see the janitor try to rape or attack Lucy? Anybody catch that??!!
I also felt that feeling, I think it's a feeling that Jake also had. An idea that eventually, somehow, his life would reach some sort of climax, a moment of excitement in his otherwise drab life.
@Arthur Frayn Exactly, and that happens. Reading comments they expect it as a scare of fear but not the indication of how you said it as the film gave. I've seen comments be harsh and cruel on the jeniter of his situation. It seems to me with relationship how people feel if not met, audiance can participate on the decay of someones desire, or stigma if not met or ridicule even if their old, like society commanding them not to have these emotions, as it dictates its creepy or weird. Society just doesn't get it or is stupid too connecting people right or share something that has good but is interpreted ir subverted. It gives downhill advice and makes the soul rot. The film touched on levels and I had to stop halfway when it was in the car conversation. As I went outside the front laying on the grass at night smoking, I'm not a smoker but i needed it becouse it just hit, others films were these idealicual agenda generalists crap, they were just roll over eyes for me, topical. That was last year, it was a mirror no agendaed filters. Joker was one and then this one. Two films mirroring my circomstances and feelings making them legitimate (But audiances were mixed since the film directly was giving and showing what it was about.) That's how films or storys can be told but it's a rare case. I just sat laying on the grass thinking about my life that what I felt wasnt irrelevant, I felt alone but recognised by it, that felt good feeling ease just to know this sociaty isnt fixed (Or right or just) right as it thinks it is. The heartwarming moment was the janitor in the school empty, giving an indication that the hall is scary, but it's just the janitor, empty. Hes always known that empty place. And a hug was all he really needed in his life, someone to be with. Society gossips relationships these days as if its materialism or teaching how to decline with doubtful advices which is put on everyone. Why people have pets and say they give interaction more then humans, that was one article, a woman from the sun newspaper said that, possibly deep down that's what they wanted, connection but thinking it didnt matter becouse sociaty or its rotting advices said so. There is so many interpretations of relationships, but watching all of them, this film tallys ups all the strains and barriers. This society heavily invests declining, a friendship and perverts it and think it's just culture or mediocre or overrated. Why adulthood and its expiernce when it comes too relationships perverts others or alienate others. The guy that made the book just wanted to make it, and he was just chilled outside. It's kinda a warning sign too sociaty, its audiences. There is alot of big hearts out there, you are only taught or expiernce the decline. Dont put it on others, dont make stigmas on people becouse you think you have it figured out. All people want is connection.
i felt so high while watching this movie. the car scenes were so long and uncomfortable i just wanted to skip over them but something just kept me there.
i just thought of something: when the girl with the rashes at the ice cream place tried to warn “lucy” to stay with her because she was scared for her and telling her not to go to the future, i thought it was because jake was going to murder her, especially since he interrupted them and insisted lucy to get in the car and move forward in time. but now that we know the whole movie was jake planning on killing himself, that line probably was jake second guessing his suicide for a second. he was basically talking to himself, the only escape from his lonely miserable life. he’s intelligent and misunderstood. unable to socialize and came from a traumatic background and spent his years working as a janitor at the same high school where he was made fun of as a teenager and even in his older years. he spends his time reading and watching films and taking bits and pieces from those writers and films and adding them into his own fantasies. thats what they meant when they touched on how unoriginal humans ideas and thoughts are. he daydreams about his past and his ideal life, being loved by a intelligent multi talented woman he can be proud of and boast about. he spent most of his time on earth alone and died alone. i pity him deeply and i understand him. i think many people fear ending up alone, being unhappy and filled with regret with the way their life ended up, and not being able to do anything about it because they’re too late and have run out of time. this film hit home for me and my mind is blown from the subtle things i missed in this movie
What an excellent theory. Yeah, the whole time it was actually the deuteragonist who was the main character. The poster and the film made you think it was going to be about Lucy ending things with Jake, when in actuality, it was his suicidal thoughts. I liked the non-linear narrative, the plot twists, and how all the random scenes and random time periods later connected together, making it Jake's past, present, then, death unfortunately. A great film that just makes you have to stop and think.
i initially thought jake and the janitor were different people, and the janitor has been stalking lucy obsessing with her to the point that he had to kill jake--- the existential part of the whole thing just went over my head lmfao
Yes that was cleverly set up from the start by having her appear before young Jake. I think it's relevant that she is a figment of his imagination but that she gains an amount of sentience within that: Jake seems shocked when he hears her thoughts that he is not totally in control of her character even though he thought she was only in his mind.
The sad thing is, when you get hypothermia, there's a stage where it's so cold that your body feels like it's burning. So people tend to strip at this stage which only makes it worse. I think that's what happened with the naked scene - he was in his car in the real world, freezing to death, and reached that point where he stripped his clothing as he was dying.
Yeah I was thinking of that too! As soon as he started stripping I figured he had hypothermia. And then I believe he started to hallucinate then as well... but at the very end when it showed his truck covered in snow I can only assume he was still in there, dead.
I saw someone else bring this up before, but I thought I'd share it here. The ending where the car is completely covered in snow references back to the idea of landscape shots without any people in it. We're able to pick up on the sadness of the scene, knowing that the janitor is dead in the car, even though you can't see any people in it.
But does the janitor die in the car? When hypothermia sets in, people can interpret this as feeling really warm, which may be why he takes off all his clothes. Does he really leave the pickup and walk into the building with the cartoon pig? Does anything in the film really happen? If Lucy doesn't exist, then why would Jake be visiting his parents with a non-existant girlfriend? If he doesn't, then the whole film is just in Jake's mind, charting events that never happened.
funny how the actor for jake was also in USS Callister in black mirror where the main character is also alone and made his own personal world where people like him
anyone remember the scene where lucy sees a bunch more brrr cups in the trash can? i think its supposed to show that this wasn’t the first time jake played out this fantasy.
the lady who plays the boyfriend's Mom, Toni Colette, is like on fire for playing crazy Moms lately. She was amazing in Hereditary and didn't disappoint in this, either.
I was so attached to the idea that Lucy existed and was a protagonist, and thought this was her looking back on her life as an old woman and not being able to break up and it’s a message about ending relationships and moving on, but then the last 15 minutes smashed that to pieces
I interpreted the film's ending as Jake imagining what it would be like if his relationship with Lucy did last. The end of the dance sequence is Lucy and Jake looking at each other, in front of a dead man's body. Lucy is the first to leave. Symbolically, she has told him "I'm thinking of ending things," which is what she wanted to say the whole film. The dance sequence ends on a downbeat note, just like the relationship between Jake and Lucy. The musical number, just like the dance sequence, is representative of Jake's feelings. For the whole film, we followed Lucy. We saw her behavior, we saw her feelings, we heard her thoughts. But how did Jake feel, during and after their relationship? The musical numbers are Jake's fantasy, his feelings, his thoughts about the relationship between him and Lucy, particularly the breakup. It's about what he wishes to have happened, even though it all lies in the past. He wishes Lucy never ended things. That's my interpretation of the film's ending.
That's where I'm at. I feel like, for a movie like this, no single idea about how it panned out can properly accommodate every detail. I can see Lucy not being real. That idea makes sense to me. But it didn't come across in the movie because Lucy's thoughts and ideas were defined and antithetical to an ideal girlfriend. What guy fantasizes about a girl who wants to break up? Why would she ever need to get home? Wouldn't his fantasy be for them to stay at his parents'? It sure seemed that way. Instead, she's left to freeze to death in his car. My takeaway was that it's a story of a girl who's struggling with an unfulfilling relationship. It fits some scenes better in my mind, but it doesn't explain others very well. Like the movie says, the interpretation of your environment is entirely up to the observer
Thank youuu i thought i wasthe only one who thought he has a serious case of Maladaptive Daydreaming. Constantly wasting his life on a imaginary para which he created
I was thinking throughout the movie that the way it flowed seemed familiar, the mind of it. That was before I knew the whole movie was literally about the old janitor’s mind. But I already compared it to my own mind, how things change in the daydreams and it keeps going in any direction, good or bad, and I get so lost. Even when the details are fuzzy and mistakes are noticable, the mind just moves on to the rest of the story. Like in the blizzard, we couldn’t even see the road, but Jake just kept driving, and that road was so incredibly long, and isolated. I had way worse cases of maladaptive daydreaming when I was a kid, could last for half an hour, but now usually regain awareness of what’s happening after a few minutes. When I was a kid, I just accepted it, but now I dread it. It feels like I’m losing time to parasites, just erasing a part of my day to fill that void with their own realities, quite literally like losing a piece of my mind, temporarily. But all you can do about it is keep your mind cool and focused and be aware of your surroundings, checking in on them and how you feel in your body, to stay connected to your surroundings. Hard to do all that with adhd though. But when I do wake up from an uncontrollable daydream, I make sure not to dwell on it. I move on, do something productive, consume some entertainment or educative content, depending on what my body needs, as long as it doesn’t let me keep daydreaming. I shouldn’t have watched this so late at night. It’s 1:30 AM, my mind is absolutely shattered, and I think I’m gonna go take care of my needs now. Maybe clear the table of dishes. Lol sorry for an essay, the words kinda just spilled onto my screen. TL;DR: yes maladaptive daydreaming is a bitch and I feel soberishly high right now. Good night
Also Lucys "It's easier to say yes" monologue in the car in front of Jakes highschool shows, that in Jakes mind even if he would've been able to get her number and go out with her, she just would have done so because she couldn't say no. He's so riddled with insecurities that even in his imagination, the possibility of a girl going out with him because she saw something in him is less likely, than her dating him for seven weeks and even meeting his parents just because she can't say no.
This doesn't make sense since it was his fantasy, it was all in his mind. There was actually no girl he just made one up. Did you even watch the movie or the video?
If you want more, you can listen to the album of "The Caretaker". If this movie made you feel like an Alzheimer's patient, this album will make you feel like a Dementia patient.
@@sejama6625 oh tell me about it I went on a month long road trip in 2019 and i was like “oh I should finally listen to it” and I cried my eyes out. It was so stressful.
And one part i caught in the movie was that every time lucy tries to say “i’m thinking of ending things “or i “think we ..”jake interrupts her with something like ta daaa or talks about something right away i think it’s because jake was still not ready to end things in his own mind until he was back in the school at the end of the movie . Mistakes in this review that I noticed: When talking about how many jobs the woman seemed to have he forgot the first job she describes, as a virologist. At the Tulsey Town the two young pretty girls who work there are seen earlier in the film making fun of the way the janitor walks in the hallways of the school and the nicer young woman is seen sheepishly smiling at the janitor as he walks past her on the far right side of the screen also in the school hallways, though later on in the movie than the first two girls are seen, while Jake in his fantasy is talking about how he sees outcasted students at school every day. He also failed to mention that the rashes both the nice girl and Jake seem to have are a reference to Jake's rant right before arriving at the Tulsey Town where he likens unpopularity to a disease. She and he both share the "disease" of unpopularity, hence the matching rashes. She's been inserted into his fantasy as a nice girl to oppose the mean pretty ones because he feels akin to her.
This movie feels like a dream you once had when you were really sick and couldn’t think then you started making stories in your head and you feel like you’re going insane
The whole thing is an imagined or real memory in janitor Jake's head, but the girl in his imagination gains awareness. She is incredibly confused to find herself aware in this environment and cannot remember her own name or anything about herself. Jake is also very confused to find she has gained awareness, as seen when she starts thinking, "I'm thinking of ending things." and he looks over in shock. He thought he was in control of the memory / fantasy, but the characters started acting independently from him. He also didn't want her to go into the basement but she disobeyed him. In the basement was his deepest fear. The deepest fear was being a school janitor for the rest of his life and squandering all of his talent and intelligence.
Maybe, or maybe not. The girl thinks of endings things with Jake, as in breaking up with him. But that's an allegory of how Jake wants to end his life. That's why when the thought crossed on Jake's head, he would change the subject so could think of something else. If you've never had suicide thoughts, or even attempts, it would be hard for you to understand that. Basically, yeah, the girl is her own character, a character being completely out of Jake's subconsciousness, but not in the way of schizophrenia or split personality. More like the hammer in your head reminding you how fucked up everything is. The one of your inner conversations.
Towards the end of me watching this movie, I couldn't wait for it to end so I could immediately go to UA-cam to figure out what the fuck I had just watched for the last 2 1/2 hours lmfao

This movie made me cry. Mainly because I’m 25 years old and have nothing to show for it. I feel like I’m running out of time, and that nothing will get better. Especially with my mental and physical health. I get thoughts to end things, but I still want to give life a chance to change. But I can’t help but to worry that my life will be meaningless and unsuccessful.

I can't believe no one is talking about in the car scene Lucy SUDDENLY turns into the girl in that romantic movie for just a few seconds that the old man was watching a while back
lucy mentions she grew up in a farmhouse, but then says she grew up in an apartment. idk if i’m tweaking tho LOL this whole film confused me, and i wish i read the novel.
I thought it was more like a look at the janitor's daydream. When we daydream, it reflects our desire, or more so, something we can't have - in this case, a youth and a smart, beautiful companion but at the same time we are aware that it can't be true, therefore a constant denial/ murmurs and that weird basement. Also, our daydream is sort of grounded within ourselves and memory yet changes as our environment or desire changes. Therefore, the girl constantly changes as what the janitor is experiencing or thoughts or desire changes. I mean I have so much to share about the movie. It is such a great movie! You are lost through out the movie yet it makes sense and makes you feel what is being felt. It made me so depressed for few days.
Watched the last scene and then asked the question, “What the heck did I just watch?” then immediately goes to UA-cam for a detailed commentary....Now I sit here and think about Jake’s life and how he spent most of his time reading books and watching movies... then this thought occurs: Am I becoming a Jake?!😳 Lol
I’m actually kind of scared that I am like Jake. I fantasize love and future a lot and I actually don’t know how to pursue goals or dreams... this kind of spoke to me to do something more

Anyone else notice that part where “Lucy” says something about moving forward but actually staying still and then you noticed that it seems like the car is moving forward but after she said that you couldn’t unsee the fact that the car is actually not moving AT ALL and the wind is just blowing against it? Nope? Just me?
yes! i felt like whenever the camera was on her, the car was moving and the snow was blowing, but as soon as it cut to jake, everything was still and the car wasn’t moving.
Yes because throughout the film it is alluded that the father is part of Jakes insecurities. His father never gave him appreciation for his work and never acknowledged his presence
@@jordanbrenes7246 Also I think his father used to constantly beat up his mom. Cuz after the dinner scene, you can hear them screaming at each other in the distance, but you can still hear stuff like screamings from her mom telling him to stop. And Jake and "Lucy" kept talking like they're used to it. Also, in another scene, when Jake leaves Lucy in the car, she starts talking to herself to say things like "He isn't a monster, right" "At least he doesn't beat me." referring to his father.
Whaaaaaaat? I didn't notice that I just noticed it was the voice of the shame wizard from big mouth. Figuring that out right now just baffled me more than this movie did and thats saying a lot lol
I'm stunned. No one's picking up on the blatant Oklahoma! references here. The bit where Lucy thinks to herself that it's harder to say 'no' than 'yes' and that one yes leads more yes's, matches the theme of Ado Annie's song "I cain't say no." The ballet dance using idealized versions of themselves, a wedding between the two love interests, ended by a disturbed/ villainous/ creepy male character who wants to possess the female lead, ending with said possessive man murdering the girl's boyfriend with a knife? Yeah, that's all taken *straight* from Oklahoma!--that's the ending bit for Act 1 of the musical, my friend! All that's missing is saloon girls posing as "diseased Christmas ornaments" (as the choreographer put it) while being suspended in the air, and they'd have a beat for beat parody of the 7 minute scene from the musical/ movie. He wasn't confident or bold enough to be Curly in his youth, and he's not dynamic or powerful enough to try to be Jud in his present. He can only act as these 'avatars' in his fantasy. He's *both* men, fighting over a fantasy woman that he can never have, even when he casts 'himself' in both 'roles'.
Even if this movie is one hell of a doozie, the ending is hearthbreaking when you understand it all. Especially once the title slaps you hard in the face because all along you thought it was about a breakup.
I know this comment was over two years ago, but I actually thought the whole time that the meaning was about that. After I finished the movie I was like "OHHHH It could mean like ending a relationship!!" DHDHHFFJDJ
It was totally weird but in the end it feels like it was the 'flash of his life before he died' but most of his life was just other peoples works, ie movies and books.
I literally said out loud when I was watching this "If this movie is some sort of metaphor or something I'm too much of a dumb bitch to understand it."
Sometimes when thinking of distant memories and people in them, you can't quite put a face to the person, and you sort of add a more generic face to them, forgetting the unique details. I think he just used the faces of the high school girls as they are more in the 'now' and the similar to the types of girl that made him feel insecure when he was younger, as the memories of the girls who did that to him is so long ago now.
The ice cream shop analysis- The two pretty girls were judgmental. You saw his fear of them. He also would barley even talk to the unattractive one with rashes. He was seeing himself through the eyes of his imaginary girlfriend to get a perspective of what she may have thought of him and what others thought of him. The girl with rashes speaks reason to him through talking with his girlfriend. She appealed to him through her, since it was all in his mind. She was the voice of reason saying “you can stay here with me” showing it’s ok to have problems or not be the best person. Maybe even saying you can find a girl with problems too and be with her, you don’t need the perfect girl. She then says “you don’t have to move forward/keep going down this road”(kinda forgot exact words) she was the voice of reason encouraging him not end up back at his school, at the end of his thoughts where his dead end life, full of hesitation and regrets had lead. The girl with the rashes offered her self and he wouldn’t let his girlfriend/himself hear it. She offered peace in knowing it’s okay to have problems, but he viewed himself to grand and narcissistically to accept himself and who he had become. He continued to imagine what life could of been like if he only lived differently and it lead to a painful regret, pushing him over the edge to suicide, where he wanted to end up all along. He used this story to help give him the courage through pain to push him where he needed/wanted to be. (I understand this may have tons of “holes” in it but it’s merely for fun. Just an interpretation. please keep negativity to yourself. Thanks) Edit: I was thinking about the rashes on the girl. It related to the pigs with the maggots eating there flesh. The girl chose to live with the rashes and even work it a fluorescent lit environment exposing every detail on her skin and make other people ice cream (yikes). She encouraged him to live with the problems even if it was tough. In contrast pig encouraged him and showed him how terrible it was(maggots in flesh...again yikes), exaggerated his problems saying it would ultimately kill him, so he minds well finish the job. The pig talked so nonchalant and matter of fact. It was his last thoughts of reason, comforting him but also more likely fooling himself that this was the best choice. I’m not sure about the whole “brrr” thing or the smell in the back “varnishing”. Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts. And plz like so ppl can see this :) it was a cool movie!

There's some good themes with him horrified by Alzheimer's (he get enraged when people forget or mix-up words) and that he believes he 'deserves' a woman, even though he's aware of how sexist that is. He wants to blame his mother, but he's smart enough to know that that's all just an 'excuse.' There's also a weird thing where people BARELY eat, since the dishes have all their food on them when they're taken away, and he orders an ice cream he never eats.
i think the motif of food being disregarded could be in relation to the theme of dementia (?) just because loss of appetite is a very prominent issue dementia sufferers face, it could be pointing to the fact that jake himself is going to end up getting dementia
I HIGHLY recommend rewatching the movie after this video. You catch so many more details that aren’t mentioned in this video and you can really connect so many dots and create your own interpretation
This movie actually reflects me, idk if that sounds weird or creepy. But out of loneliness, grief, and disappointments; I created a made-up world in my head where I am who I’m not and have a couple of people who feels like they’re real. And yup, that’s my escape mechanism and I don’t know how to stop it 😶
I watched this with subtitles as well and whenever Lucy did something it would be like “young woman sighs” or something i was confused on why they didn’t just put her name until the end, so that’s a fun little thing they added ;)
I'm surprised you didnt notice the food when they 'finished' dinner... none of the food was touched at all. She was carrying full platters of food back to kitchen.... a dinner uneaten, a life unfulfilled... I liked the movie but think it was way too long.
Maya Chad you mean it wasn’t spoon fed and completely obvious? Part of the enjoyment for me was dissecting all the scenes and discovering what I was really watching which is much more satisfying than any standard, linear type of filmmaking. 2 hrs. 15 is a breezy runtime to me. 🤷🏻♂️
@@rjay-d2335 As someone who routinely watches movies like Red Cliff that top 4 and a half hours in runtime, it always makes me laugh when people say 2 hours and 15 minutes is a long movie.

Same really. I've even stopped watching anything with an extremely sad ending. Life is difficult and often sad as it is, I don't think more mind bending depression needs to be added in the mix.
I like how in the beginning Lucy is wearing Orange and Yellow and warm positive colors but later on, her jacket turns Purple and her outfit is Bluer I guess because the tone was colder and not as happy
At first I was so confused as to why she wouldn’t react to anything strange and kept acting like everything was normal😅 like when they turn old all of a sudden
I think you missed one thing. The girl with rashes at tulsey town said, "I'm sorry for the smell in the back" saying that they are redoing the floors. Then goes on to say that the smell is not actually what she said it was, and that she is scared. Talking about how you don't have to keep moving toward the future but instead you can stay right where you are. Which i believe is a reference back to the janitor who is thinking of ending things. Maybe he is using chemicals to kill himself, or maybe just the general smells he encounters as a janitor.
Another possibility is that the rotting pig was the smell. I noticed that on the tulsey town billboard there was a pig and I wonder if those two things were connected. Kaufman probably thought of it as up to interpretation.

Come on. Yeah, we learned some things, we has suspicions, but to say that the filmmakers "showed their hand" so early in the movie is bull. I felt like I was being patronized, so I watched a different video. I am content. I really enjoyed the film and I like your UA-cam handle.
Love how the young woman's outfit changes throughout the movie hinting at it all being in the janitor's head. At one point a different actress plays the young woman in the car ride
I thought i just wasnt paying attention and was tripping out. Towards the end to during the second car scene she suddenly is just smoking a cigarette out of nowhere
NOTE: DON'T WATCH IT IF U ARE UNWELL I literally had fever while watching this movie, fell asleep half way through and dreamed about the part where she goes to school to look for him and it was a never ending nightmare 😭
The run-time doesn't help in my opinion. Too much information in such a long movie and my brain couldn't handle it. I liked it tho. It leaves room for thought and many different interpretations
Given how many references to other works of art the movie had, the janitor’s monologue about the “one question left” may be a reference to the introduction to Camus’ Myth of Sisyphus, which is concerned with the absurdity of life: “There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy.”
i wonder if that’s why he also mentioned a guy who committed suicide was only remembered for that, his suicide. i mean the title itself is almost a reference to suicide as well as the obvious wanting to end a relationship.
One of my favorite things after watching a movie is watching/reading reviews about it... i like to see other's perception and Interpretation of it... it's always interesting!
He was saying it clicked, like "ooooh the young guy and the old guy art the same person". What I got from it is the old guy is just daydreaming the whole thing, making a little world in his head with his younger self and that girl Lucy
The only reason I knew about the fantasy part is because I read the synopsis on Wikipedia hehe. If I hadn't read that I wouldn't know what the heck was going on.
This makes sense. I think while watching, it’s easy to see that Lucy and Jake are the same person, and that Jake is the janitor, but I wondered if the message was more abstract. I thought the movie was trying to convey that there is no ‘self’, that we are fooled into thinking we are our own thinking and feeling entities, when really no thought is original and every human is a slave to their own mortality. The reference to the insects who kill themselves for the good of the colony particularly made me think this. We think of life as linear and that we override ‘animal’ instincts and behaviours, but perhaps this is not the case. Perhaps this is the human condition itself. Just a thought.
The movie goes deep in different existential thoughts. This being one of them. So yeah, basically the whole point is how miserable we humans are. How everything is pointless, how we wish things could be better, and we keep longing for things to turn around, but the truth is, we all are fucked.
you know, there is never one meaning or one side to psychological movies so this could be a potential side, this was actually excactly what i was thinking through the movie, so yh this is another thing they were saying
When you die of hypothermia, people take off their clothes in the last stages. I don't remember the reason. Maybe their body shuts down nerve signals and people think they are hot.
I believe this movie was a really good representation of dementia or alzheimers all throughout. It’s a masterpiece with the cinematography and references. All the mixed visuals such as Lucy’s outfits and familiar faces are just Jake trying to create a life to reflect on cause he truly does not remember anything. It also shows what he truly remembers from his distraught parents and how he grew up remembering certain memories. Jake is losing his mind slowly as that’s what these diseases do to you. Ultimately, it will lead to a pessimistic way of thinking about life and the feeling of not fulfilling what could have been.
THANK YOU! I fully thought this movie was about jake having dementia or Alzheimer's until the school scene. Kind of disappointed its not actually about that
The song Jake sings from Oklahoma in the last streach of his fantasy is sung by the villian, Jud. Jud's character isn't evil. Instead he is just an outcast trying to get the girl but he comes across as a creep to all the other characters. It's clear Jake relates to this character and sees himself as a tragic creep. It's sad to think that even in the last moments of his life, in his 'happiest fantasy' Jake still sees himself as the creepy outcast. It shows how deep his insecurities lie.
I can see from the comments here too that a lot of people related to it too. Some said it hit too close. Others said this is probably how their life will be etc . How ironic and sadly beautiful is that. People relating to it and commenting on a UA-cam content about a movie of a man who creates an elaborate fantasy based on the contents he consumed. Deeply meta...
To anyone who is struggling with their mental health and self-esteem, please know that feelings of failure and apathy do not have to linger forever and consume you. There is a lot to live for and be proud of - even if you don’t believe it now. I promise you it will pass.
I don’t agree he committed suicide. He may have been thinking about ending his life for a while, but clearly he was an old man and never did (nothing about that particular day was significant enough to trigger him to actually go through with it either). Instead, it seemed at the end that, after clearing the snow from his car, he was suffering from a stroke or heart attack that kept him from going on. He sat in the car and started to succumb to hypothermia (one side effect of hypothermia is that the person feels hot so they often strip and are found naked - his desire for ice cream in the middle of a blizzard is also explained by that). He began to have a fever dream as he lay dying - perhaps the entire movie was that fever dream.
I was thinking this too! The whole movie might have just been a delusion he experienced in his final moments, where he tries to remember his life one last time but some things are a bit broken and fragmented because of age
So 'im thinking of Ending things' was precisely that, he was thinking of it but like other things in his life, he never really got round to it and it wasn't untill he succumbed to hypothermia that he re-runs his life thoughts with Hollywood tropes and even to his own natural passing in one final fever dream. 🤔
Usually I'm easily confused by movies (and hence why I seek out explanation videos) but with this one I was somehow fully aware of what's happening, fully aware of what it means. It's one of the saddest films I've ever watched, largely in the sense of how much I relate. I am not like Jake, I'm still only 20. But the bleakness and dreariness I (perhaps undeservedly) foresee in my future, how much I relate to how Jake deals with things (fantasies, suicide) and how much media has affected everything in my personality made me see myself in this film way too much. It was a depressing af movie that felt uncannily tailored for me. In the same way how certain horror movies scare some people more than others. Sadness has as many shades as fear.
When I finished this film I complained about it on Facebook, then said I needed to go watch something cheerier, like The Shining. Funny how different people made that same connection. I loved Adaptation, but this film just left me with a sick feeling. Maybe that was the idea.
17:07 The way the snow was only falling on the car, and how he mentioned the grass was green, reminded me of the saying, "Grass is greener on the other side", which means, "When someone is not satisfied with their own life and always assumes that there are better things in other places". In addition, I'm pretty sure that was his last memory when he died, in his car covered in snow.
Wow. This movie actually made me feel like i could see my dreams more vividly. I don’t know why but this movie just made me feel every emotion i didn’t even know i had. Thanks for that. God i need to go to sleep.
i spent the entire movie hopelessly wishing for her to come back home (not the farmhouse) safe and free... the last 15 mins were pure dissociative horror. wow i think its such a well done horror film. i’ve grown to feel desensetized to most horrid/horrific things cinematic and i realised it really takes something like this cinema of existential dread to make me crawl in my own skin, haven’t felt like this since i watched jeanne dielman 23 quai du commerce 1080 bruxelles directed by chantal akerman
I loved this ending explained, but one little detail made me angsty. The “vomit” on the night gown was the green gruel that Jake was feeding his mom, it was all over he mouth. This implies that the nightgown was only just worn before being handed to “Lucy” but then that food is baby food, as the mom, now youthful, tells us. When you said it was vomit I was all, what?! I struggled to follow this movie through all of the references (I’ve never even seen Oklahoma) but that was one of the things I clearly understood. I knew that Jake died at the end, but didn’t connect the ending of things and the hypothermia and just assumed he died of old age and a crumbling mind. You’ve made me so sad, but I appreciate the movie even more to see all of the pieces fall into place.
Well he actually doesn’t even die, if you watch till the very end of the credits he gets in his truck and drives away, and I think he finally comes to accept himself, at least that’s what I got from the pig talking to him at the end
I Watched this with 2 fríends using netflix party because one said that it was horror/drama, 2h After and we didnt know wtf were we watching, one of my fríends even fell asleep
Anyone else notice how throughout the film in jakes mind his parents are extremely praising of him? He seems to even in his mind reject those praises showing that he was maybe neglected as a child hence him creating praise for himself from his parents in his mind
the audience at the end in stage makeup to look older was a nice touch. The fantasy Jake has movie quality, realistic aging makeup maybe mixed with the stage makeup for the forehead wrinkles, but they all have just the highschool-level makeup.
Missed the sound of the truck starting again at the end of the credits. I took that to mean that he ultimately didn't kill himself, which is either positive/caving to media and societal pressure or just another thing he failed at
I heard that too! I waited till the very end. Well actually my husband and I were so confused that we just sat there as the credits rolled and that’s when we heard the engine struggle.. both of us looked at each other with our mouths open 😦😦
The two pretty girls were judgmental. You saw his fear of them. He also wouldn’t even talk to the unattractive one with rashes.

The most terrifying part being that it can happen to literally anyone.
Hold up. They talked about the rapey song... then when fake jake and fake Lucy dance in the hallway you see the janitor try to rape or attack Lucy? Anybody catch that??!!
This whole movie felt like a jump scare that never happened
Like the drumroll to a jump scare
I also felt that feeling, I think it's a feeling that Jake also had. An idea that eventually, somehow, his life would reach some sort of climax, a moment of excitement in his otherwise drab life.
The janitor watching them kiss made me jump big time
EXACTLY
The entire movie felt like a fever dream.

i just thought of something: when the girl with the rashes at the ice cream place tried to warn “lucy” to stay with her because she was scared for her and telling her not to go to the future, i thought it was because jake was going to murder her, especially since he interrupted them and insisted lucy to get in the car and move forward in time. but now that we know the whole movie was jake planning on killing himself, that line probably was jake second guessing his suicide for a second. he was basically talking to himself, the only escape from his lonely miserable life. he’s intelligent and misunderstood. unable to socialize and came from a traumatic background and spent his years working as a janitor at the same high school where he was made fun of as a teenager and even in his older years. he spends his time reading and watching films and taking bits and pieces from those writers and films and adding them into his own fantasies. thats what they meant when they touched on how unoriginal humans ideas and thoughts are. he daydreams about his past and his ideal life, being loved by a intelligent multi talented woman he can be proud of and boast about. he spent most of his time on earth alone and died alone. i pity him deeply and i understand him. i think many people fear ending up alone, being unhappy and filled with regret with the way their life ended up, and not being able to do anything about it because they’re too late and have run out of time. this film hit home for me and my mind is blown from the subtle things i missed in this movie
I love this ! And yea our ideas aren’t original: even his fantasies were just inspired by different parts of movies and writers and such.
Your theory makes so much more sense, I love it.
i initially thought jake and the janitor were different people, and the janitor has been stalking lucy obsessing with her to the point that he had to kill jake--- the existential part of the whole thing just went over my head lmfao
THIS! What an underrated comment! There are several explanations but yours hit the hardest. I almost cried reading this.
The fact that I thought the story was about the girl the entire time really messed up my interpretation of the movie
Its so crazy. I went back and forth on who the movie could be about. I ended with the interpretation that the girl was delusional for some reason.
I found out the girl was imaginary when they kept changing her name
@@LuisSierra42 ya thats when I decided it might be Jake controlling everything.
Yes that was cleverly set up from the start by having her appear before young Jake. I think it's relevant that she is a figment of his imagination but that she gains an amount of sentience within that: Jake seems shocked when he hears her thoughts that he is not totally in control of her character even though he thought she was only in his mind.
I thought the movie was some emotional movie about suicide and then I started to this it was a horror movie
Toni Collette playing another crazy mom is exactly what I needed.

I thought dementia.
wow I never thought of that
Yes I thought that too
Hi twin 🤣
I saw someone else bring this up before, but I thought I'd share it here. The ending where the car is completely covered in snow references back to the idea of landscape shots without any people in it. We're able to pick up on the sadness of the scene, knowing that the janitor is dead in the car, even though you can't see any people in it.
Wow 🥺😳
If you watch until the real end, the picture gets clear again, and you can see a ghostly light leaving the building.
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
But does the janitor die in the car? When hypothermia sets in, people can interpret this as feeling really warm, which may be why he takes off all his clothes. Does he really leave the pickup and walk into the building with the cartoon pig? Does anything in the film really happen? If Lucy doesn't exist, then why would Jake be visiting his parents with a non-existant girlfriend? If he doesn't, then the whole film is just in Jake's mind, charting events that never happened.
@@richardellingworth4484 Yes, you’ve reached the point of the movie. Now keep going.

the lady who plays the boyfriend's Mom, Toni Colette, is like on fire for playing crazy Moms lately. She was amazing in Hereditary and didn't disappoint in this, either.
Whenever I see in a movie I know it will be fire. She is always in a horror/thriller movie.
I KNEW SHE WAS IN HEREDITARY
And Krampus
And Knives Out playing the complete opposite kind of energy, but still crazy, social media guru mom
This movie and Herediatary both keep tension throughout, never giving any relief. No comedy or jump scares. Incredible.
I was so attached to the idea that Lucy existed and was a protagonist, and thought this was her looking back on her life as an old woman and not being able to break up and it’s a message about ending relationships and moving on, but then the last 15 minutes smashed that to pieces
Omg! Same
I interpreted the film's ending as Jake imagining what it would be like if his relationship with Lucy did last.

Depression and maladaptive daydreaming: the movie
Thank youuu i thought i wasthe only one who thought he has a serious case of Maladaptive Daydreaming. Constantly wasting his life on a imaginary para which he created
LMAOO
Good night
Thank you.
yes
Also Lucys "It's easier to say yes" monologue in the car in front of Jakes highschool shows, that in Jakes mind even if he would've been able to get her number and go out with her, she just would have done so because she couldn't say no. He's so riddled with insecurities that even in his imagination, the possibility of a girl going out with him because she saw something in him is less likely, than her dating him for seven weeks and even meeting his parents just because she can't say no.
Yes. That's why she tells him that he could die if he jumped from the moving train implying that he shouldn't take risks.

Underrated comment. The basement metaphor is super depressing.

My brother says he feel the same way but even though I can’t Guarantee anything I can only hope things will get better and wish you the best sometimes just having a conversation with someone close can be nice and helpful I feel and trying to look on the upside of some bad situations and trying to be content for as long as you can best wishes man.❤️✊🏾
You can give your life your own meaning and have your own metrics of success. Fuck society and its knack of telling everyone who to be and how to do it. Set some s. m. a. r. t. goals read about how to change your habits and be patient to yourselves. Changes does not happen from. One day to another.

lucy mentions she grew up in a farmhouse, but then says she grew up in an apartment. idk if i’m tweaking tho LOL this whole film confused me, and i wish i read the novel.
lmao yeah. at first she said she grew up in a farmhouse then later changed it to an apt. read the book, its easier to follow.
It’s because she’s a projection of Jakes life so her personality mixes with things that Jake has created for her
There are all sorts of inconsistencies in her stories and memories

I need about 12 more years of education before I can understand this movie.
Did anyone notice that his father never looks at him? He only looks at him after the speech fantasy.
Yes because throughout the film it is alluded that the father is part of Jakes insecurities. His father never gave him appreciation for his work and never acknowledged his presence
Yeah i noticed this too it was very odd how a father couldn't look at his own son !
He also criticizes and doesn’t understand/appreciate Lucy’s paintings, which we later see are his (copied) paintings down in the basement...

Same haha I was so confused
I'm stunned. No one's picking up on the blatant Oklahoma! references here. The bit where Lucy thinks to herself that it's harder to say 'no' than 'yes' and that one yes leads more yes's, matches the theme of Ado Annie's song "I cain't say no."
The ballet dance using idealized versions of themselves, a wedding between the two love interests, ended by a disturbed/ villainous/ creepy male character who wants to possess the female lead, ending with said possessive man murdering the girl's boyfriend with a knife?
This movie was so weird and I definitely had NO CLUE wtf I was watching!!
It was totally weird but in the end it feels like it was the 'flash of his life before he died' but most of his life was just other peoples works, ie movies and books.

I literally said out loud when I was watching this "If this movie is some sort of metaphor or something I'm too much of a dumb bitch to understand it."
Scags that’s also Session 9.
The two girls in there ice cream shop were students at the high school he’s a janitor in. As he passes by the laugh and make fun if him.
Yeah what was up with that I’m still confused
Sometimes when thinking of distant memories and people in them, you can't quite put a face to the person, and you sort of add a more generic face to them, forgetting the unique details. I think he just used the faces of the high school girls as they are more in the 'now' and the similar to the types of girl that made him feel insecure when he was younger, as the memories of the girls who did that to him is so long ago now.
the dance scene was beautiful
Thanks)
Edit: I was thinking about the rashes on the girl.

Yeah i noticed the food thing too. No one ate (almost) a single thing and "lucy" takes all the plates into kitchen while its all full
i think the motif of food being disregarded could be in relation to the theme of dementia (?) just because loss of appetite is a very prominent issue dementia sufferers face, it could be pointing to the fact that jake himself is going to end up getting dementia
That makes sense

I think you missed one thing. The girl with rashes at tulsey town said, "I'm sorry for the smell in the back" saying that they are redoing the floors. Then goes on to say that the smell is not actually what she said it was, and that she is scared. Talking about how you don't have to keep moving toward the future but instead you can stay right where you are. Which i believe is a reference back to the janitor who is thinking of ending things. Maybe he is using chemicals to kill himself, or maybe just the general smells he encounters as a janitor.
Ngl when I saw her talk about how the smell wasn't chemicals, my immediate thought was just, "There's a dead body back there, huh?"
Another possibility is that the rotting pig was the smell. I noticed that on the tulsey town billboard there was a pig and I wonder if those two things were connected. Kaufman probably thought of it as up to interpretation.
It's probably the smells from the chemicals he uses as a janitor. He dies from hypothermia not chemicals

Given how many references to other works of art the movie had, the janitor’s monologue about the “one question left” may be a reference to the introduction to Camus’ Myth of Sisyphus, which is concerned with the absurdity of life:
“There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy.”

Girl, you're spot on.
The movie goes deep in different existential thoughts. This being one of them. So yeah, basically the whole point is how miserable we humans are. How everything is pointless, how we wish things could be better, and we keep longing for things to turn around, but the truth is, we all are fucked.

Damn. That’s deep
You can relate to the questions that Lucy asks but you dont get questions and thats why I think the film is rather frustrating than anything else.
To anyone who is struggling with their mental health and self-esteem, please know that feelings of failure and apathy do not have to linger forever and consume you. There is a lot to live for and be proud of - even if you don’t believe it now. I promise you it will pass.
@Koatei Harven Life is hard, and suffering is an essential part of the human experience. But you don't have to be miserable.
thank you
I don’t agree he committed suicide.
In the book, he definitely committed suicide.
So 'im thinking of Ending things' was precisely that, he was thinking of it but like other things in his life, he never really got round to it and it wasn't untill he succumbed to hypothermia that he re-runs his life thoughts with Hollywood tropes and even to his own natural passing in one final fever dream. 🤔
That's what I thought too when the old man started stripping. I was like, uh-oh, paradoxical undressing, he is definitely suffering from hypothermia.
At the end the trucks starts up showing he didnt die.
My dad described this movie as "The Shining, but everyone is insane." And yes, I would have to agree.
The Shining but everyone is insane but only one of them is insane.
YES THIS GAVE ME THE SHINING VIBES
YES
It was the photography of the film at times. Every hallway presented as they were looks like the shining
When I finished this film I complained about it on Facebook, then said I needed to go watch something cheerier, like The Shining. Funny how different people made that same connection. I loved Adaptation, but this film just left me with a sick feeling. Maybe that was the idea.
When i saw the title i got scared he was quitting UA-cam. What a relief.
Same
Me too I was like noooo
Same😅
Ok, ok... woo, I thought I was the only one.
Me to.
I tried to hang my keys on the light switch after watching this movie
underrated comment
Wait why pls explain
@@danki4113 it doesn’t belong 😭
17:07 The way the snow was only falling on the car, and how he mentioned the grass was green, reminded me of the saying, "Grass is greener on the other side", which means, "When someone is not satisfied with their own life and always assumes that there are better things in other places". In addition, I'm pretty sure that was his last memory when he died, in his car covered in snow.
I uh wasn't expecting this at all. I thought the entire movie was a trap for the girl 😑
How is that i felt so anxious while so little happened throughout this movie.
This is an incredibly relatable comment.
@@nothothurley we hear the truck trying to start, but does he actually drive away? I don't remember that part.
@@eunoiavision7567 i don't think he drives away
I just saw this movie today and immediately after it finished I thought I need Foundflix to explain this movie
Literally me at the end of the movie
I Watched this with 2 fríends using netflix party because one said that it was horror/drama, 2h After and we didnt know wtf were we watching, one of my fríends even fell asleep
The same thing happened with my friends
@I drink your milkshake the trailer gave me like a slight horror vibe.
I drink your milkshake it definitely gave more of a psychological thriller vibe. Only certain people thoroughly enjoy them
It looks like a horror, a Silent Hill kind of atmospheric horror, but it never delivers.
@@maijennasis it's unsettling, it's unnerving, and it's effectively disturbing. It's definitely a horror film, but not a conventional one. I loved it.
When I got the notification and saw “I’m thinking of ending things” my heart dropped bec I thought he was quitting youtube.
Me too
Missed the sound of the truck starting again at the end of the credits.
Wait wtf
Anthony17 ong wtf
The two pretty girls were judgmental. You saw his fear of them. He also wouldn’t even talk to the unattractive one with rashes. Thanks)
Edit: I was thinking about the rashes on the girl.
@@anthonyy1790 Its actually not the engine struggling. I watched another video explaining. What we hear is a snow plow. The next custodian worker who"s clueless as to what awaits him
This movie actually made me question my own sanity for a split second I thought I was losing my mind lol. It felt like the real life version of those copy pasta posts on Facebook where it says “you’ve been in a coma for 20 years, this is your subconscious attempting to wake you up”
yes same 😅 I literally felt like everything and everyone in my house and outside were warping into craziness like the movie.
