Fun Fact: In Sonic Unleashed, Savannah Citadel Act 2, the easiest way to get the S rank is to NOT drift, and just run by turning using the Right Stick for the Camera and only boost at the straight paths. Love how they kept this level being a complete fuckaround to finish the right way.
I still cannot get over how amazing the finisher of Knight truly is. Knight is Sonic Frontiers at its peak for me despite the underwhelming Chaos Island.
They missed a trick by not making the traversal in this area based around using those birds to get to other segments of the island and having the challenge be a mixture of avoiding obstacles on those and leading them to land on literal highways in the sky for extra platforming challenges and when you finish those and whatever challenges are on the islands themselves they'd unlock springs or rails that go back so you don't always have to do them to get back like normal.
I'm probably the only person who actually likes Chaos Island. I thought the 2D wasn't that bad, and I liked figuring out how to get to each side of the island.

While I still think it’s enjoyable, Chaos Island is easily the worst to go around in with the numerous things that send me flying into the air and the freaking 2D, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Sega, Sonic Team, if you (hopefully) do open-world again NO 2D! 2D doesn’t work at all in spaces like this and it’s even kind of false advertising (again!) since we thought we would be completely free (since you know, that’s what freaking OPEN-WORLD means!) but then 2D comes back again, punches us in the face and says “You’re not getting rid of me anytime soon” Edit:Oh yeah and the pinball freaking sucked too, Knight was awesome though
I didn't mind the 2D sections, but i DESPISE the fact that most of the treasure icons are in reality boosters and bounce pads. Overall, Chaos is...alright. It does have probably the best boss in the game, but the good things end here. The Pinball is torture, the smaller islands are just annoying to go to and the invisible wall at the bridge is pointless.
What's funny is that people complain this game seems kinda rushed. Though you can see some aspects of incompleteness throughout, I don't think Chaos is rushed. I tried a mod that cuts all 2D in Chaos island (except when wall jumping). If anything, it's OVER-development that ruined this island because the devs made it harder for themselves to program more 2D segments.
You don't really "program" 2D segments though. It's a collision trigger that puts you in 2D, so all 2D segments are code-wise the same thing. Also level designing in 2D is easier, something to think about. So no, I would absolutely say that making 2D segments are easier than making 3D segments and yes Chaos Island is rushed
@@Onaterdem But here's the thing. You can glitch by the 2D segment register and play through these sections in 3D. You can't help but ask yourself: "Why didn't they keep most of them in 3D"? Sure, they are clearly designed to be completed in 2D, but the fact they even programmed more 2D segments, rather than keeping them 3D, seems like an unnecessary effort.

I'm not sure what you're thinking of, there's simply no extra effort that went into this. Do you mean "they should've kept the design exactly the same and not have placed a 2D trigger"? As I said, you're not meant to be in those sections in 3D. They are designed to work in 2D, and when you roam them in 3D, the level design breaks and things don't work properly. Think of it as a "3D in 2D bug". It's not meant to happen and it doesn't work properly, so in order to make the level design work in 3D, they'd have to spend more effort. Tl;dr: Placing a 2D trigger takes no effort, making 3D level design makes more effort than 2D level design. The current level design is made for 2D and doesn't work when you're in 3D (unintended), so they couldn't have "just left it 3D".

When sonic picked up Knight's blade I immediately thought of Final Fantasy Sonic; I have no clue if it inspired that cutscene or not but regardless, the image of Super Sonic holding a giant red sword in a Sega published game makes me very happy

I'm 99% certain the insane increase of 2D sections at this point in the game was because of time constraints. Developing for 2D is significantly easier and quicker, because there's much less space involved. I don't know if Sonic Team is just bad with time management or SEGA just hates them for some reason, but ever since 2006, possibly longer, the Sonic franchise has been cursed with insanely tight deadlines, which is why shortcuts are taken with the level design. It's also the reason why Cyberspace levels are just reused from older games. It's all a matter of time.
actually it isn't. 2.5d and automations is a lot harder than 3D, but it takes less creativity. the question isn't ease, Sonic Team just ran out of ideas.

Fun fact: In fact, it is possible to get the red emerald using one of those Bird Robots, Although a very precise jump must be made to achieve it, I have done it twice and it has been very helpful!

Chaos Island wasn't perfect but god damn it's my favorite aesthetic, has my favorite Titan and admittedly has some of my favorite Cyberspace stages I actually didn't mind 3-5 that much, if you boost immediately after the drift ends, the pace goes faster- after playing the Savannah Citadel drift stage and witnessing how annoying the drift is in Unleashed, I'd take the Cyberspace version anyday- but that's just me Also I'm surprised you didn't talk about 3-1 and 3-3, those are my favorites
The ones that are in all the advertising, the whole thing of freedom and exploration since that doesn’t really work for 2D, especially when it’s here, I go over it in the rant section of the video

Chaos Island definitely was the worst island in the game for me, but now with the spindash, it's become a favorite during new playthroughs There are so many hills and slopes where you can go flying with the spindash and you can literally never get lost anymore with all the new shortcuts. And you can literally skip so many platforming sections and just snipe the memory tokens from out of the air. I love this island now.
My first run on Chaos island went like this: collect memory tokens See blue emerald in distance talk to tails see red emerald in distance talk to tails see all emeralds glowing but no idea how to reach any 1 of them googled a fully revealed map of chaos island, blindly revealed all beacons on the mainland gave up and youtube-ed "how to get blue chaos emerald chaos island" other emeralds resolved quickly after that downloaded full Chaos Island track to enjoy movements 2-7 as most my in-game time is spent listening to movement 1
Yeah I found the split of this island very confusing at first, like how would I ever get there without a bird or a guide, really wish I went over that in the video
@@oreogod1985 the 2D platforms will be bearable if the jump / launch pads and signboards stop spawning after u completed the course and collected the memory token! I kept launching myself back into those set pieces only to find out I’ve been there before and have to complete it again!

Too much 2d, map is very hard to navigate when u first get on it especially when keep going to the 2d sections over and over and the 5mil pinball game Other than that chaos island isn't that bad
YOOO ANOTHER HIDDEN AMV AT THE END WITH MY FAVORITE SONG. LETS GOOO. Also this island is the entire reason I learned the speed run. Would recommend watching one of Onakus older speed runs to learn where all the spots are located that have Tails Memory tokens. It makes it to where you only have to do 2d sections to get the yellowchaos emerald if I’m not mistaken. Great review once again!

While I agree that the 2D sections on this island are annoying, I do like the atmosphere of the island itself and plus they finally addressed the issues with Tail’s character for the past decade. Fortress is probably my favorite Guardian design too since I think airships are cool. And the Titan bossfight is great. Especially that finisher. That was just peak epic-ness.
Surprisingly, this was my favourite island, didn't mind the 2D and finding ways to get to the isolated islands was one, all bundled up with a great general aesthetic. However, I can definitely see why many people regard this as the worst island. Also 3-6 is the best cyberspace stage, fight me
I love Chaos island, but not because for its design, is because breaking 2D sections is so fun, you can literally fly all the goddam time (which is insanely fun) and the content is actual peakness (if we refuse to talk about the pinball minigame lol).
The only thing keeping me interested was finding my own way to get up a section to get a token or upgrade of some shit. The 2D railroads you so you can't even do that, it's one way and one way only for most of them and I found it super tiring. Big reason not to 100% the game on your first run bc this island was borderline CBT.
Chaos Island would've probably been the worst island of the game, had it not been for the absolutely amazing Knight Titan fight. I didn't even know you could do Cyloops around him! By the way, what do you think of the character writing of Frontiers so far? Another personal highlight for me about Chaos Island was how they handled Tails.
I feel that the character writing is the strongest part of frontiers story, seeing these characters be themselves again is amazing and feels like home, however the actual story about the ancients and stuff I still have no idea what the hell it’s on about lol
Hated traversing this island i feel like it way to much 2d platforming compared to 3d platforming instead of having a stable mix of the two and everything was oddly split apart

I agree! Chaos Island wasn't perfect but god damn it's my favorite aesthetic, has my favorite Titan and admittedly has some of my favorite Cyberspace stages
I actually didn't mind 3-5 that much, if you boost immediately after the drift ends, the pace goes faster- after playing the Savannah Citadel drift stage and witnessing how annoying the drift is in Unleashed, I'd take the Cyberspace version anyday- but that's just me
Also I'm surprised you didn't talk about 3-1 and 3-3, those are my favorites

The ones that are in all the advertising, the whole thing of freedom and exploration since that doesn’t really work for 2D, especially when it’s here, I go over it in the rant section of the video

I decided that I didn’t really know how to talk about the story and characters in a video yet, and I was worried itd be boring for viewers, so I just kept it at the gameplay for the most part

Chaos Island definitely was the worst island in the game for me, but now with the spindash, it's become a favorite during new playthroughs
There are so many hills and slopes where you can go flying with the spindash and you can literally never get lost anymore with all the new shortcuts.
And you can literally skip so many platforming sections and just snipe the memory tokens from out of the air. I love this island now.
My first run on Chaos island went like this:
collect memory tokens
See blue emerald in distance
talk to tails
see red emerald in distance
talk to tails
see all emeralds glowing but no idea how to reach any 1 of them
googled a fully revealed map of chaos island, blindly revealed all beacons on the mainland
gave up and youtube-ed "how to get blue chaos emerald chaos island"
other emeralds resolved quickly after that
downloaded full Chaos Island track to enjoy movements 2-7 as most my in-game time is spent listening to movement 1
Yeah I found the split of this island very confusing at first, like how would I ever get there without a bird or a guide, really wish I went over that in the video
@@oreogod1985 the 2D platforms will be bearable if the jump / launch pads and signboards stop spawning after u completed the course and collected the memory token!
I kept launching myself back into those set pieces only to find out I’ve been there before and have to complete it again!

Too much 2d, map is very hard to navigate when u first get on it especially when keep going to the 2d sections over and over and the 5mil pinball game
Other than that chaos island isn't that bad
YOOO ANOTHER HIDDEN AMV AT THE END WITH MY FAVORITE SONG. LETS GOOO. Also this island is the entire reason I learned the speed run. Would recommend watching one of Onakus older speed runs to learn where all the spots are located that have Tails Memory tokens. It makes it to where you only have to do 2d sections to get the yellowchaos emerald if I’m not mistaken. Great review once again!

1:40 you can use spin slash and loop kick in 2D if you use the drop dash and slide

While I agree that the 2D sections on this island are annoying, I do like the atmosphere of the island itself and plus they finally addressed the issues with Tail’s character for the past decade. Fortress is probably my favorite Guardian design too since I think airships are cool. And the Titan bossfight is great. Especially that finisher. That was just peak epic-ness.
Surprisingly, this was my favourite island, didn't mind the 2D and finding ways to get to the isolated islands was one, all bundled up with a great general aesthetic. However, I can definitely see why many people regard this as the worst island. Also 3-6 is the best cyberspace stage, fight me

I love Chaos island, but not because for its design, is because breaking 2D sections is so fun, you can literally fly all the goddam time (which is insanely fun) and the content is actual peakness (if we refuse to talk about the pinball minigame lol).
I'm glad they made the starfall event optional with Update 1.

If they absolutely needed the 2D, it should've been Rhea Island.
The only thing keeping me interested was finding my own way to get up a section to get a token or upgrade of some shit. The 2D railroads you so you can't even do that, it's one way and one way only for most of them and I found it super tiring.
Big reason not to 100% the game on your first run bc this island was borderline CBT.

Chaos Island would've probably been the worst island of the game, had it not been for the absolutely amazing Knight Titan fight. I didn't even know you could do Cyloops around him!
By the way, what do you think of the character writing of Frontiers so far? Another personal highlight for me about Chaos Island was how they handled Tails.
I feel that the character writing is the strongest part of frontiers story, seeing these characters be themselves again is amazing and feels like home, however the actual story about the ancients and stuff I still have no idea what the hell it’s on about lol
Chaos Island is my second favorite level in the game

Hated traversing this island i feel like it way to much 2d platforming compared to 3d platforming instead of having a stable mix of the two and everything was oddly split apart
