  • Have you ever wondered how much carvers get paid for their work?
While it’s relatively straightforward to estimate the cost of hiring a carpenter to build a deck, estimating how much to charge for wood carving is much more difficult.
It's hard to know how much a wood carver can make. There are many factors in play. In general, the more skilled you become at your craft, the more money you can expect to make. So if you're interested in wood carving , this video is for you!
Most people think of woodcarving as a hobby, rather than a career. If you enjoy being creative and crafty, then woodcarving could be for you. However, the amount of money that woodcarvers get paid varies drastically. Many wood carvers get paid by the piece, and it is not uncommon to make good wages by carving wood.

Woodcarving is a great and beautiful hobby that’s not only fun but also a great way to express yourself. But if you’re just starting out, it’s sometimes hard to figure out if you’ll be able to make a go of it. Especially if you’re just starting out, woodcarving can seem like a lot of work that takes a lot of time.
Carving wood isn’t an easy task. It requires hours of practice, drawing and sculpting skills, and a keen eye for detail. People who make a living as wood carvers often spend a lot of time working on their craft.
There are around 50 million people in the US that work in one form of woodworking: carpenters, woodworkers, cabinetmakers, furniture makers or joiners. So it is no surprise that the skills required to create beautiful pieces of furniture and joinery are highly sought after and paid well.
As a wood carver and furniture maker, you need to know the pay rates for the various woodworking jobs that you can do. This will help you decide if the work is worth your time. Woodcarving pays well not only in the US but also in other countries. In the US, an average wood carver earns $45-$65 per hour.

I joined the school roughly a year ago, and I love it! There's many courses, and each course has ways to track what you've completed!
There are hundreds of hours... idk, could be thousands...
One of the courses is Alex carving the Venice room projects, and I like to just watch. I've learned so much from just watching a master carver >carve!
Is a great school for all... for learning, and inspiration! Alex with his good sense of humor. It's like working right next to him

    Alex...
iv been a student of your online carving school from the beginning. You have not only taught me how to use the tools for carving but more importantly you have taught me how to "think" like a wood carver. The process of woodcarving doesn't stop when the artist sets the tool down for the night and walks out of the shop...the mind continues to process the work being performed. You have taught me how to manage the processing and in doing so my skills have advanced exponentially. You helped me get past performance fear and anxiety allowing me to open up my true abilities.
you dont just teach a craft/skill you teach a way of being one with the art.
    thank you

TY Rob for sharing your thoughts re: Alex's online training. I must have missed his offering of online-only classes since I am new to his online videos. While it makes sense that online-only training is not as thorough as onsite (in-person) instruction simply because with on-site training, Alex is able to provide real-time one-on-one corrective instruction to each student if/when needed. But at least with online training a prospective student can possibly take his/her training to the next level that is not available only by reading one or more books. Plus, I'm sure online training is significantly less expensive since Alex, himself, does not have to be concerned with his own costs necessary for him to be away from his own home, and the student has no hotel costs, no driving or flying costs to get to the location where Alex is teaching, and eating out in addition to the course cost itself. I'm now going to consider whether or not I can afford what Alex charges for online-only course costs. Anyway, thank you again for your post on how much you learned from Alex's online course beyond only learning from books on this subject.

Good Morning Alex. I enjoyed hearing your perspective on this subject, and I agree completely with you up to a point. A hobbyist by my definition, is not usually woodcarving for a living as you stated. However if that hobbyist has the same talent level as a professional who does depend on their skillset to earn a living on a day to day basis, he/she should be able to command the same price for a SINGLE PROJECT since they usually both will take the same amount of time to complete the project (except the hobbyist may be able to breakup this time spent on a particular project over a longer period). Plus they will usually both have the same cost requirements for tools and other materials. But again, if they have the same skillset, the hobbyist should still be able to command whatever a customer is willing to pay for such talent based on the project alone; not on whether or not either craftsman is a professional or a hobbyist. In the end they each have to put in the required hours to complete the project, not to mention the cost of materials and necessary tools, correct?
Again, the biggest differences as I see it is one, the hobbyist usually does this type woodcrafting mostly for "fun" maybe, and the simple joy of doing this craft whenever they have the time to do it. Whereas a professional must charge whatever it takes to make a living at it ..... again, assuming they both have the same skillset level, each must each pay the same cost for materials & tools, and when combined together, must spend the same number of hours and/days as the other with the difference only being that the hobbyist may have a longer period to perform the same project and is usually woodcarving for the enjoyment or fun of it - not making a living from it as a professional. Does that sound fair? Anyone disagree?

A woodcarver who carves for clients is carving in order to provide for themselves and their livelihood, whether it is their full-time job or a part-time gig. In this sense, it can be seen as their "protection" or means of supporting themselves and their family.
Because of this, they should be considered a professional carver, regardless of whether they carve full-time or not. Being a professional means that they are skilled and knowledgeable in their craft, and that they are able to provide a high-quality product to their clients.
Therefore, it is reasonable for them to charge the same as other professional carvers, regardless of whether they are carving full-time or not. Charging a fair price for their work ensures that they are able to continue carving and providing for themselves and their family, and that they are able to maintain the quality of their work.
In short, being a professional woodcarver means providing high-quality work and charging a fair price for it, regardless of whether it is a full-time job or not.

Alex, sorry about missing this topic live! This topic applies in so many ways in life. Truly one of the hardest things in life to do is assess the value of one's work.
As a member of the school, I think it is awesome. I would say the school is like sitting in a master woodcarver's studio, and being able to peer over his shoulder as the creation of a masterpiece unfolds; all the while with commentary as to why, what, and how he is doing what he is doing, available from anywhere you wish. Remote wood carving training and education. COMPLETELY worth the nominal yearly fee and will open your eyes to the reality of carving wood and challenge you to achieve a greater skill level in carving and design. Truly a great opportunity. May God continuously bless you and your family.

Superb topic! I’ve been getting more and more commission jobs. I always struggle with my decision on the price. There’s always so many variables that differ between projects. That is what I believe causes me the most thought. The whale theory is great. I’ve been naturally inching towards that. So it’s great to hear that it’s best to simply jump into the whales.

    Okay, so what I heard...
    1) Set a minimum rate. Any project that would be priced below your minimum rate, you still charge that minimum rate.
    2) Charge by the square inch of surface area, but not less than $5 per square inch.
    I can work with that.
    Thanks!

The school is great and is the next best thing to having one on one personal teacher. The video shots are done from different views to give you the details you need and in high HD. You can ask questions and get the answers you need. I have taken other online wood carving courses and Grabovetskiy is by far the best. You get the help to develop your talent you did not know you had. The only thing it can't do is replace you doing it and the practical experience needed to make you a master carver.

95 percent of all woodcarvers, regardless of skill, are too slow to make a marketable product.
Speed and efficiency is very rare when high skill is required.
Because my master was faster than me, he could charge less.

Yessss a lot of wood carvers have a god giving talent n it most surely be HUMBLING, !!!! InsteD there are some that put their ego before anything else, n is sad, some are like : “look how good i am, look how many biutifull gauges i have, look how many churches have my carvings, n people go n pray in there” , so yess charge accordingly, but humble ourselves, n not put EGO, infront our craft...........

Thanks for the great teaching, I'm a very Ameteur carver who loves carving nudes and I am terreble at faces so I am practicing in oil based clay. I love carving as a hobby and probably have a pretty good experience in using them. I've only been using excellent tools for 10 years now and it was the greatest investment ever. Looking forward to more of your videos

I Think ,te fact that in Ex URSS a Simple labor servient would get the same amount as doctor or engineer make sense , that shall be the light for the world future ,GOD told all ,man born equal ,all man are Brothers
" Base " all most igual for everyone , because eve3ryone need eat , sleep ,sheet etc ,same for all,so why one man should won +400 plus then other man ? that's the biggest unfair nowadays
I can give you an exemple ,as woodcarver you can take 10 minutes or more talking with people on youtube, i have seen a doctor take 30minutes talking in youtube , a servient by the other side he cant even take 5 minutes for smoke ,he need smoke & work at same time ,i can understand that , people that study have the privilegie of don't need work on the rain , are dry and comfortable in a office , but after living work ,both need to buy their food ,a bottle or olive oil cost the same for both , so why just one can access tho that ?? or housing exemple ,both need ,why one can live comfortable in a quiet place and the another cant ?? thats why i believe in ex soviet ,( even not perfect ) they understood well that housing shall be make for people life and not for speculate. Far from me , the wish of offend you man , i am just expressing what i believe been fair
