there is an underlying message beneath this entire album. poppy at this time was breaking up completely with a partner whom she worked with for years (titanic sinclair) following a lawsuit between him, her, and Mars Argo. this album shows not just her deviating from what people have known her to be, but also urging others that sometimes you’ve got to ‘burn things down’ even if they mean the world to you, so you can move forward.
What makes I Disagree so great is not only the clunky genre mashing but the context of when the album was released and whats its about, Poppy had started mashing genres in about 2018 in late 2019 poppy got out of a 5+ years long abusive relationship and the main messages of the album are learning to be true to yourself, and you don't have to listen to authority sometimes you gotta burn down everything around you and restart
Mannn. I have really been fucking with the new record hard but this revisit reminded me how much more out of the box and moody her songs were on this effort. Not a bad mark on the new record.. Just different. Still such impressive production.
this is her most critically acclaimed album for a reason. Flux is more cohesive. you'd like it!
I personally think this is her best album and blows her new album out of the water in terms of production, genre blending, instrumentals and lyrics. I also recommend checking out her EAT EP.
lies.
I'd say that this album was her artist's business card, if you wish. She's very much a "shock rock" artist, whose most distinct feature is being wildly unpredictable - hence, no two albums are alike.
So, as a result, she's never quite entered the mainstream - and imo, Negative Spaces is very much an attempt at doing that, compromising as little of that "business card" trait as possible, but some felt like it compromised too much - and neither do I expect her to continue the path she took on Negative Spaces cause she never does😅
I just appreciate that there's an artist that can sound good no matter what genre she's venturing in - and I appreciate the mad creative genius by extent.
Also, with that in mind, given your impressions on this album, it feels like the pop Poppy might be the Poppy for you😅 check out Zig, it's still very creative, it just doesn't really channel her "rock" side as much as a lot of her later fans wanted at the time😅
Nah, he'd hate zig. It's still very jarring. @@neurospider
I think Poppy is mature enough to realize negative spaces just "works". I think she does want to be more well known, but yes... At the same time, she gets bored very easily.
My guess is the followup will be a more technical negative spaces. I love Stevis Harrison as a rhthym guitarist and he's a very good lyricist that works well with poppy. But I gotta admit I miss the technical prowess of Chris Greatti.
I'm hopeful that poppy's current touring guitarist, Johnuel Hasney from Toothgrinder is more that just a hired gun. He's literally the only guitarist that's been able to play Chris's parts live correctly and toothgrinder is a technical band without being outright progressive metal. They still write catchy songs.
So basically negative spaces 2.0. Now with upgrades and bug fixes. Lol!
For outright wierdness, Poppy has improbably poppy as her own wonder showzen type outlet.
@@oaktowndimond668yes, I like Jasney a lot. He can also do Chris' harmonies well live, which enables them to backtrack less.
The most important thing about this album in the context of when it came out is that at that time poppy had two albums out: One being bubblegum child-like pop and the other one more "girlboss" pop, she experimented a bit with rock but this ws the first time she released a rock/metal album so it was really impresive to see at the time
Ofc you can say that her new album is better because she has done it for years now, but for this to be her first rock/metal/experimental album is such an accomplishment even to this day
Like others I think you'll enjoy Flux and her EAT EP as projects.
As an album, I Disagree was Poppy's first full venture into the heavy sounds and experimenting she was really into at that time. Her loyal fans were (still are) crazy sbout it because it represents totally shedding her old android persona, burying it six feet deep, burning everything to the ground, and being whoever you want to be. It resonated not just about her leaving her label over creative differences, but the release coincided with her very public breakup with her collaborative partner and emotionally abusive boyfriend, so much of the lyrical content can be extended to that situation, even though (ironically) he helped write it. It also came out two months before the Covid lockdown saying Don't Go Outside, which was freaky...
This album got me into Poppy. It was really jarring at first, but after a couple listens, I was really into it. It’s an oddly cohesive album. This, the Eat Ep, and Zig are my favorite albums from her. The new album is excellent but I do miss the odd structures and genre bending. I’m hoping for a future album with the heaviness and screaming but with crazy song structures and genre bending.
Flux is grunge/hard rock/metal
Zig is like pop/dance/r&b
R&b??? 😭 i think thats the one genre poppy hasnt done yet
@@artangels9958 Linger has some bits that resemble R&B music
EAT EP!!!
nothing i need really is the best song in this album! i do love all of them though
My favorite songs on this album are sick of the sun, dont go outside, and anything like me
Flux is my favorite poppy album imo, negative spaces for is a close second tho flux is a very cohesive alt rock album
I'm guessing you'd hate jazz/rock fusion. Stuff like mahavishnu orchestra, weather report, return to forever. Pretty sure you'd also not dig frank zappa.
That's all good. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I love this album because I dig all the other artists I mentioned. But yeah, many people think that stuff is just wierd.
Jordan Fish discussed poppy in his recent NME interview. he basically agreed that switching genres between songs is cool, but not multiple times in the same song.
Didn't totally crap on the idea, but was like "poppy's done that. It's time to move on".
BTW, the producer and guitarist on I disagree is Chris Greatti is an incredibly talented musician and an absolute shredder.
He's now working with aurora and willow. He's toned down the chaos in his production as well, but he's still very unique.
This album's a little different to jazz/rock fusion stuff though. I think it's decent, but the constant genre bending seemingly for the sake of shock value gets a but much. Mixing 2 or 3 genres together to form a cohesive sound is cool, but jumping all over the place just feels random.
@TheDGBgamers the first mahavishnu orchestra album, the inner mounting flame gets pretty all over the place. But yeah, i love I disagree, but think it's a good idea for Poppy to move on or she'd become a "parlor trick" ... Which she's done.
@@TheDGBgamers oh and don't forget Brian Wilson and the beach boys. Smile, good vibrations, all about whiplash shifts.
@@oaktowndimond668 Yeah, fully agreed
I love bite your teeth, it’s about people telling you to do the impossible, like while you know it’s impossible, other people are encouraging you to do it because they think it is possible, and that’s about people wanting her to do pop but she can’t, the second she starts singing more of a pop sound her “teeth are sinking into her teeth” until she breaks out of it and screams in agony big “blegh” it’s such a good song man
You said you wanted an album that was more cohesive genre blended, try her album, ‘Am I A Girl’ it’s more of a pop/ electronic vibe.
You should defintley listen to her album Flux. Its great i think youd enjoy it more than this
When you get the chance, watch the music videos for the songs on the album. Imo some of the songs aren't the same with just audio.
if i recall, i disagree the song was about her old music management
yes, and bloodmoney was a Titanic Sinclair diss track. Anything like me was a Mars Argo diss track (though I think Poppy sympathizes with Mars now).
the album was also a conspiracy that she was letting us know COVID & 2020 chaos was about to happen, themes about staying inside, burning things down, and falling in line
What’s up brother happy new year my friend love ya man as always an your channel content as always an this album is super awesome but u still love her newest album better but both are phenomenal albums
One of her best albums 🔥👏
Flux would be the good mix of this and negative spaces you arte looking for a devent amount
Poppy’s computer by poppy is her best album
I don’t know, I’ve never understood the preference for cohesion unless it’s a particular sound that people REALLY want to hear more of. This isn’t a dig to anyone here btw!! But, I’ve also never understood it as a criticism, because it only seems to be brought up when it’s done in a way people don’t like, so it’s not genre blending **itself** necessarily but the specific artists or the specific genres they choose (which u did say, tbf!).
Also genre blending has sort of been the trend across all music spaces since about 2016, big examples including twenty one pilots and Sleep Token (you’ll notice a lot of fans of these bands simply name their genres of music, after the band themselves). Not saying if something’s trending it = quality, but it’s clearly something that artists are interested in and tapping into now that genres are more concrete!
Personally I’ve got mad ADHD and am a huge fan of the techno, thrash, Billie Eilish style pop, 80s progressive rock, Kawaii metal and Queen elements all being woven together track to track here. I even feel that the only place they sort of clash, is on Concrete, but that seems to be done with the intent to set the tone and it’s never that harsh again imo. Maybe it’s my constant need for change and something to focus on that contributes to my love of this sorta stuff, but I do enjoy listening to these sounds both individually, and also REALLY enjoy the experience of getting them all together like w Poppy.
Of course these are just my thoughts and I just wanted to share, since it seems you enjoyed the experience of the album despite it not being a new favourite, which, honestly is all we want in the reaction space and I’m glad you still seemed to vibe :)) The clashing vibes is a lot of Poppy’s musical identity, but I’d say Flux is way more cohesive if you’re after something more❤
28:17 that’s me 100% LMAO im that toxic fan
