Nice job! You're a brave man taking this job on. I can't imagine working on the quad turbo version of this engine. I think BMW engineers lost their fcuking minds making these maintenance nightmares. I hope the owner changes the oil more often than he has been doing up to this point.

hello mate, how did you find out that your turbo’s were shot? mine throws white smoke when i put the foot down and i think it lacks some power, am looking into the turbos now but afraid what if the turbos are fine? … scary thought
@@mexicanumex So luckily mine was found early but small amount of whiteish smoke was the initial sign, kind of also felt like no power low down in the rpm range. 6 months before the warranty ended I paid for an inspection to take a look at everything in detail (to repair before the warrany ends). They found a cracked EGR radiator but as it did not explain the smoke because the crack was external, they found the turbos. Funnily enough 0 codes or errors except feeling low on power in the low rpm range.

@@mexicanumex This was 2019, something along the lines of 200€ at an official BMW Service provider (used to be a dealer). Basically on paper it was a pre purchase inspection with a bit of extra on instructed diagnostics for the exhaust smoke. But in reality they basically check everything before the warranty ends as the service provider likes to make money on warranty work and it also makes the client happy to get it for free so a win-win situation. I’ve also done it a bit later on another G12 7 series xDrive and they found a bad transfer case which was fixed under warranty.

I bought a X5 40d with a receipt for £5K just spent doing timing chains but they did not fit a new oil pump! After 1 week oil pump seized and engine was scrap!!! Oh boy what a job getting it done under dealer's warranty. Took 4 months to get car back and I sold it straightaway as it ran badly with no real power.
You really know your way around those BMWs, that looked like an insane amount of work. People that complain about the S85 V10 being problematic should look at one of these and shut up. BMW's oil change intervals are also the main reason why the N62 V8s have a bad reputation.
Very informative video. I have f30 with n57 engine and when I bought it (55k miles) had service done at 17k 32k and 47k. Changed the oil on the next day and since then was changed every 8-10k. On 100k now with zero problems. The car goes on a long runs from time to time so oil could last even longer I suppose. I think it depends a lot of the way you drive it - if you have a heavy foot should change your oil sooner.
@@LR95051 In the 80s Bmw F1 car had 1.5 four cylinder turbo engine with 1350hp....So today isn't strange if someone make 316i model(1.6 engine) with 300-600hp monster. You just need big turbo. It's posible.

I had both turbos replaced on my bmw f10 msport 535d 2016 with 33000 miles on it and full BMW service history . My mechanic said probably caused by not letting turbo cool down before switching off . It cost£ 3500

Have just completed a similar job on a X6 M50D. The oil pump failed starving the bearings and turbos of oil. Not sure about the X5, but on the X6 it is possible to remove the engine from the top. Its a massive job and your video helped immensely, thank you!
EEkkkkk 58k wtf, our m50d is on 59k ill be keeping the extended warranty running for sure, i drop oil every 7k, its the same with the ZF gearbox BMW say lifetime oil in it yet ZF say 60k no later
Looooovvvve this content. Have a twin turbo diesel x5. M57n2 no problems with chains and a lot simpeler. Always curious whats in store owning x50d with problems.
I have a 3.5D E70, and I only have a twin scroll turbo (I think). I have 184000Km's and am not looking forward to replacing chains. The transmission has to come out soon as I am having 3rd gear issues intermittently, I do those myself anyway, so may elect to drop the front and do the chains at the same time. Good video, plenty of info.
Fellow e70 35d owner here. Our cars have a sequential/compound turbo setup, with a smaller turbo for low boost at low RPM, and a decently large second turbo that comes on around 2000~ RPM.

For the mileage pretty dirty inside, maybe thats why the turbos let the ghost out, consider different oil and/or more frequent oil changes.. also on the note connected to the oil issues and worries about comebacks, bad news man.. you didnt do conrod bearings. Terrible mistake! :D
What software did you use to load your .BIN tunefile? I used something called TGFlash to load the Stg2 file to my M50D, but I'm always curious to learn about other options that exist..
Brave man to take that job on (even braver to buy the bloody thing though) What vicious nasty bugger decided that putting the timing chain at the back of the engine was a good idea.
knowing that one of the weak spots on N47/57 gen engines is the crankshaft bearings + conrods bearings, have you replaced those aswell? i have read that on 50d they wear out even faster than ono normal 30d n57.

Slimy / old oil caused early failure . All the internal parts are black while they have to be shinny if oil was changed regularly. Never follow bmw recommended oil change intervals as they are way too long . On turbo Diesel engine you have to do oil change every 5-6k miles as max .
At least once a year or every 8000 km. Also no spirited driving (over 3k rpm) until the oil is up to temp, and make sure the turbos cool before shutting the engine off after spirited driving. These practices alongside preventative maintenance ensure the internals are performing at optimal performance and efficiency levels.
Only if you change the oil after 15-20k miles as bmw recommends . That’s waaaay too long especially for a Diesel engine . Change the oil every 5k miles and turbos will be good till 150k+

Car manufacturers saying their vehicles are good for 20K miles is a load of nonsense in the long run. The second owner is buying a lot of problems/headaches 🤦♂️

Looks like it was all due to no oil replacement... Did you find any other cause?

Not much wonder when the 50d engine is producing nearly double the power and torque through the same bottom end as a 30d.
Good job. Obviously the turbo failed because of the tuning to add more hp to the engine and/or the owner was a little bit too hard on the engine
I’m surprised what company who done remap not adjusted sport display as the next power spot on display is 480hp same and NM getting increased.
