Transmission into neutral, rolling 2-3mph and a quick firm shift from 4 all time through neutral and into 4 low, never had an issue, same for going from low back to 4 all time. People get the grinding because they shift from 4 all time to 4 low too slowly pausing in neutral. Being stopped may cause the shift from 4 all time to low to not fully engage and will either cause a grinding noise, or will jump out of 4 low when you shift into gear or apply throttle. Same goes if you try to make the shift with the vehicle shut off, it can be done if everything just happens to align in the transfer case, which most of the time it will not, so you have to be moving slightly to shift completely into low range.
Wrong. Keep rolling about 2-3 mph, put transmission in N and pull the transfer case shifter smoothly in one motion from 4 all time to 4 low then put the transmission back into drive.
THANK YOU. These are the EXACT steps you need to do everyone. No one says to put the transmission back into drive after putting it in 4Lo not even the manual, thank you so much.
@@JackHenryKraven Same technique, slow roll, shift transmission in to N, push transfer case lever smoothly in one motion back to AWD and put transmission back in drive all before coming to a stop.
I went from a select trac to quadra trac. Select trac requires on the fly shifting. I tried the same in my quadra trac and it grinded hard. I was in neutral, cruising at 10mph. Not a fan of quadra. When it's not fully engaged it gives the signs of transfer case failure and locks the tires like it's in 4 low while in full time 4wd.
Why is it so hard for people just to drive their cars the way the manual tells you to considering those are the people that engineered the vehicle? Stop listening to people that do their own thing and tell you everything's going to be fine if you do it their way too. Remember those people are not going to help you with the bill when your car starts getting problems and breaking.
Hi Mikes, what is the setting to drive in the city and highway, 4W High or 4W low? I see we have only 4W high and 4W low, and N for this car. My car is put in for 4W high for all time, will it hurt my engine for the long run? what do you do for city and highway drive? What do you suggest?
ok so occasionally that is how it goes, most of the time I cant get it into neutral or 4lo nor back again, I have to move around a bit and hope. I have never really put my arm into it but it just wont go down into neutral or anywhere, what would cause this?
(Cherokee Laredo 2000) my transfer shift don’t move , when I in N in the transmission and try to move it to 4 all time. I think I’m doing something wrong...
Select Trac uses a different transfer case, a 242 vs the 247 in the Quadra Drive and Quadra Trac models. Your case has 5 modes, 2wd, 4 fulltime, 4 part time, N and 4 low. 247 case has 3, All Time, N and 4 low. Difference between Quadra Trac and Quadra Drive is QD also has Vari Lok front and rear diffs.
@@08_crown_vic Correct. A Quadra -Trac II WJ does not have a 2wd option, it shares the 247 transfer case with the Quadra -Drive models. The Selec -Trac models use the 242 transfer case which does offer a 2wd option.
I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Selec trac but has 2wd option. I put it in neutral and on the 4x4 portion it goes up and down smoothly until you have to press the knob down to 4 low and high. 4x4 isn’t working. Wtf is wrong with my Jeep!!?
Shift the transmission to neutral, transfer case to neutral, then transmission back into park, and the vehicle is ready to be towed on all 4 wheels. This is frequently used by people who tow their Jeep behind a motorhome. This allows you to tow the Jeep on all 4 wheels at highway speeds indefinitely without disconnecting drive shafts, also leave the steering wheel unlocked, so you have to leave the key in the ignition in the unlocked position so the Jeep's front wheels will turn as the tow vehicle turns, it can damage the steering wheel locking mechanism by locking it while the Jeep is being towed in this manner.
@@wildbill23c Hi thanks for this. Can I keep the transmission in Neutral? So the transfer case or transmission is not going to be damaged if the vehicle is towed, is that correct?
Pff, avoid it, read your manual. Anyway, safest way, Engine Off > From P to N, pull it in 4Low. Done. Manual, do this at 3-5 Km/H and pull it complete from 4high in 4 Low.

And the dumb country boy who doesn't know how to read. With this particular transfer case you do not stop. This one you keep rolling 2 -3 miles an hour, shift the main transmission in neutral, pull the transfer case lever in one motion from AWD to 4 low, and then shift the transmission back in to drive all while still rolling a couple of miles an hour.
Aren't you supposed to put it into neutral and then switch to 4 lo ?

rolling below 5 mph in neutral, or stopped. Transmission in neutral, then shift into 4L.
