The pants refers to the British usage. Underwear is called underpants, pants, knickers, briefs, Y fronts, boxer shorts, panties. These terms are often used in Britain everyday.

Not everywhere, pants are trousers in my area (North West), but obviously context defines the meaning.
Pants is a less posh word for trousers in the UK.
In the US, pants are underwear.
When I went to primary school I wore short pants, and they certainly weren't underwear. Americans would just call them shorts.
