I own the 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road and my husband owns the 2020 4Runner TRD Pro.. We love our rigs!.. We put a Magnuson supercharger in mine last year and the results were AMAZING.. I gained over 110 hp and seen similar figure raise in torque.. I am not out winning drag races but now the 4Runner feels as an SUV this size should.. We even compared fuel use, and you only burn more fuel if you have a heavy foot and will slightly save fuel where power in required (like rock crawls) because it requires less right boot.. The best part is that TRD and Magnuson worked on this together, so it compliments the 5th gen 4Runner engine and voids nothing, as long as you don't have certain other engine mods.. It is expensive but worth it and I recommend it to all 4Runner owners.. That feeling of finally being able to comfortably and easily pass on highways and ramps, as easily as i could in my mothers Lexus GX460 (with a V8 lol) is sooo nice. :)
I use mine as my daily driver so the KDSS offers a much more comfortable ride.. My suspension isn't stock so my 4Runner articulates just fine for what I use it for, which is daily driver and remote overland touring.. It was even great stock.. To be honest, i don't really understand your question because i didn't express anything about comparing articulation in the 2 models.
I just recently bought a very clean, low mileage 2018 TRD Off Road Premium 4Runner. I've owned a couple of Toyota 4X4s in the past. An FJ40 and a 4X4 pick up and they were very capable off roaders. So far, the 4Runner has proven that it's worthy of the Toyota name and the 'Off Road' model name. I really like it but, of course, I see a mild lift, rock sliders, and a winch capable bumper in the near future. I enjoyed your video, thanks.
You Sir and the TRD Pro just showed what it can do, the beauty of this off-road video is that this trail gives you all kinds of challenges, not only crawling rocks, mud, sand, extreme side roll, articulation. Great, anyone doing this trail need some big balls. Congratulations on your driving skill.
Wow very impressive driving. Just got a 4Runner coming from a lifelong jeep guy and this is the best “use” of this vehicle I’ve seen online. Can’t wait to get mine out.

I am less than 2 months into my 2020, and the f***-it-up-fear-factor is still strong in me, but just today I completed my first hill climb, so I'm slowly gaining confidence. I live in northern NM, and lots of adventures await. This was a truly sick vid that demonstrates beyond a doubt why I plunked down for a 4Runner! Well done Tyler!
Thanks. Learned a lot from this little trail. It really showed me what this rig is capable of. Probably could have pushed it a bit more but it is a new ride and I am not looking forward to smashing it up yet!
Wow, thats was Awesome, lots of Technical driving, excellent Job. Your Spotter was very good. Can't believe you did that in a Toyota. A Jeep has allot of Capability, yet you Proved a Toyota can do the Job Also.
Many thanks. The 4runners don’t quite have the capability of a well done jeep but can get pretty darn close. It just might look a little ugly at times. 😂I have been impressed nonetheless.
Awesome. That is exactly why I made these videos. When in was buying the 4Runner there was not a lot of content on the 5th generation. I was curious what they could handle. I posted the videos to share my experiences. They are good machines. Thanks!
Watching the descent down the rock obstacle at 30min point of the video made me physically tense. I don’t mind teetering on 3 wheels climbing, but going down is bowel liquifying. How close did you feel like you were to flopping?
Gas tank skid got hung up and started rotating me. I thought I was fucked for a moment. No going back. Just pushed though a little more and everything freed up. Good times.
I was nervous too. I have a ‘17. I have had it for a 2.5 years. At some point I stopped worrying about messing it up. I wanted to use the truck, not show it off.
Looks like a fun trial! Always good to have a spotter to help with the technical lines, and video as well!!!!! Wish I would have got mine in white...looks slick!

Just did this yesterday. Had watched this vid a while back and again recently in prep for the trail. Your vids show us other 4R owners whether a trail is possible or not. It has been a few years since I have run that trail. I wonder how much it has changed. Glad you made it out in one piece. What have you done to your rig? When I bought my 4Runner there were not a lot of videos showing it’s capabilities. That is why I stated posting my videos. I am glad they were enjoyed and are useful! I am in the county, yes. Pretty happy with it for now, but after Sidewinder it makes me want to go bigger on tires, BMC, trimming, and more armor. In due time though. Nice video, rig and music! If you had it to do over again, would you still get a Pro, would you get an Off Road and upgrade that suspension? Did the stock Fox suspension not work well enough? Lastly, any thoughts on KDSS? Thanks!
If I did it again, I would get the cheapest model that had a rear diff locker. Then I would buy a KING suspension set up with Total Chaos front end. I would also do a body mount chop for 35” tires and new diff gearing. That’s what I have learned during this process! Thanks for asking.
I have never driven in a rig that has it. The factory sway bars really limit suspension travel so KDSS seems like a great idea. Just have no personal experience.

Damn what a great video. Just like that guy said below “wasn’t planning on watching the whole video but I did”. Question you think a tundra 4x4 like mine can make it through this trail? I live in San Diego waiting for my buddies to hit this trail with me.
Thank you sir! I got a feeling in the pit of my stomach when you said tundra. May be a good chance of doing some panel damage with a full size truck. I took a boulder to my rear quarter panel on my rig. I snuck out and tagged me. It was avoidable, but barely. I have watched a Tundra on this trail in another UA-cam video. It was gnarly. Lots of crunching. I am not saying it can't be done, but you might want to do your homework first. Maybe run the trail in a smaller rig first. The trail is just so dang skinny and curvy. It makes it a bit difficult for longer and wider wheelbase vehicles. Not a lot of places to retreat once you have started too.
Buffett Design oh I haven’t seen that tundra going this trail. But I appreciate the response. Well said, I will definitely do my homework prior to going. Thanks again
At the time of the video I had D ring shackles at the front recovery points. I have made the move to all soft shackles now so I have taken all my D rings off the truck.
This is a cool trail. Now, I want to go to CA and try it out myself. Can you spend a full day there doing trails - basically is it worth driving 4 hrs from AZ to do?
@@toddhoffmaster6057 There are a handful of awesome trails of all skill levels at this OHV area that will keep you occupied for a day or two. Plus is you come over on the 8, you have the Anza Borrego desert and the Ocotillo OHV area. You could spend a week exploring there. Have fun!
why put on music though? wouldn't we rather hear the sounds of suspension flexing, engine straining against the load, tires slipping on the slick surfaces, etc etc.???
Different strokes for different folks. Some love the tunes, others hate them. I have revised my editing in recent videos to give both. Truck track gets turned up and music track gets turned down.
@@Jerrythill Besides sliders and skids, the main upgrade I have done is stick an Icon Stage 7 suspension kit on the rig. I also got the heavier springs in back for times when I am waited down. The trucks sits a little stinkbug when not loaded, but it handles like a champ.

Why is it, these "off road truck" reviewers use music. An off road individual wants to here rpms, tire squeal, body flexure and anything else that may occur while driving off road. NO! For some rediculous reason, they use music to hide the sounds of the truck doing it's job.
I hear you. I prefer to hear the truck too. I typically turn the volume of the music track way down and crank up the track of the truck for these videos. This is one of my earlier videos where I may have not adjusted the track volume that well.
That is one perspective. Mine is that all capable 4x4 vehicles ought to be worked like this otherwise they ought to be sold to someone who values their capability. If I wanted to stay on the asphalt I would have bought a mini van. I want to explore backcountry trails. What is mistreatment, is not utilizing your vehicles to its potential. This rig is not for flexing ego. It is custom built for taking this type of abuse so I can get to my destination. It’s very well protected. The only thing I have broken in 4 years is a tie rod. It was like a $40 fix. You can’t put a value on the joy I get from traveling the backcountry on these trails. Cheers!

Oh crap! This is the video I was talking about and I remembered incorrectly, it was only a little tacoma!

What do you have your recovery hooks attached with?
At the time of the video I had D ring shackles at the front recovery points. I have made the move to all soft shackles now so I have taken all my D rings off the truck.
This is a cool trail. Now, I want to go to CA and try it out myself. Can you spend a full day there doing trails - basically is it worth driving 4 hrs from AZ to do?
What kind of rig do you have?
Tyler Buffett Jeep JK MW3
@@toddhoffmaster6057 There are a handful of awesome trails of all skill levels at this OHV area that will keep you occupied for a day or two. Plus is you come over on the 8, you have the Anza Borrego desert and the Ocotillo OHV area. You could spend a week exploring there. Have fun!
perfect video
Many thanks!!!
Awesome video and rig ,how high is your lift and what lift is it thanks.
Steve C Many thanks! Running Icon Stage 7 and heavier springs in rear on 285/70/R17 tires.
@@buffettdesign
What's your mgp ?
Poor. I lost about 1 mpg to the tires and 2 mpg to the rooftop tent. 13.5 is my steady mpg.@@adam10532
why put on music though? wouldn't we rather hear the sounds of suspension flexing, engine straining against the load, tires slipping on the slick surfaces, etc etc.???
Different strokes for different folks. Some love the tunes, others hate them. I have revised my editing in recent videos to give both. Truck track gets turned up and music track gets turned down.
this is epic AF
Many many thanks! It was a ride I won’t forget.
Great work. And nice job for camera person!
Is your truck stock fox suspension?
Nope. I saw Icon's with reservoirs up front and rear.
I pulled the TRD suspension at about 10,000 miles and replaced it with a Stage 7 Icon kit. Thanks, I need to get my brother on the camera more often.
Is the Pro bone stock?
Nope. At this point I had added extra skids and sliders. Also added Icon Stage 7 with 33" tires.
subscribed and liked, great vid.
Many thanks!
Nice footage and soundtrack 4Runner 4ever 🤘#Floydrunner
Floyd always makes for a good soundtrack. I am glad you enjoyed. Love the term Floydrunner!
Such a bad ass vid dude.
Many thanks!
Tyler Buffett is your truck, the 4Runner in this video a stock TRD pro?
@@Jerrythill Besides sliders and skids, the main upgrade I have done is stick an Icon Stage 7 suspension kit on the rig. I also got the heavier springs in back for times when I am waited down. The trucks sits a little stinkbug when not loaded, but it handles like a champ.
So nice, yep!
Many thanks!
Great driving and camera work!
Thank your kind sir. Just learning what this rig can do and sharing the exploits. I am glad you enjoyed!
Freaking solid video. I have a MY2020 TRD PRO unmodified and would love to take her out to work like this! Aside from tires and rack, any other mods to suspension you've done? Looks awesome. Cheers to your bro for the dedicated spotting and camera work.
Many thanks! That trail kicked my ass. I have still not been back. Did some damage to the quarter panel. At that point I had only a stage 7 icon lift with billet links.
That front end seems to be topped right out.
Very little travel in the front end. Looking forward to a long travel kit at some point.
@@buffettdesign I just bought my second 4runner. I'm getting old so just doing a 2 inch spacer level in the front this time. Nice truck, my new one is just like yours. 👍
Nice! Enjoy your ride!!
Are you lifted?
2.5” icon lift.
Good video and thanks for playing decent music
Many thanks!
This is a top skill this is not a Raod you kill the trd pro too nice to drive this Raod but keep it up it’s fun to watch
So far, not too much body damage. I have fixed the passenger rear quarter panel. Everything have been protected by skid plates. She still cleans up really nice! I am glad you enjoy the videos.
I'm barely one fourth in and yeah, you're definitely gonna lose that arm some day.
Yup. I have revised my head and arm placement!
Also snapped up a basic front facing camera that toggles with the backup camera.
@@buffettdesign Nice! Can't speak for the 4runner, but my Taco definitely has a big nose. Might have to do that someday.
min 31:00 Holy smokes!!!! Great driving 1111
Craziest trail to date. Thanks!
Head and arm out the window make me nervous. Great vid though
You and me both. I think you will be seeing less of that...
Nice Video!
Without a spotter 💪
What ever it takes to finish the trail
how long this take you to do in total?
Can't remember exactly. Maybe 2 hours. We were hung up for about half an hour on a bad line I took. It think it is just under 2 miles.
great video!
Many thanks!
Not a whole lot of articulation on the 4runner, huh. Great driving!
Not a lot, no. I am often on 3 and sometimes 2 wheels. The rear locker and front end traction control are necessary for a rig with IFS.
Is everything stock?
Got a full set of RCI skids, C4 sliders, and Icon stage 7 suspension.
@@buffettdesign What about the tires? Still running 265/70/17 Nitto Terra Grappler?
Upgraded to TOYO RT 285/70/17. No rub, but the TRD PRO comes with the front fender trimmed a few inches. @@voodooblue6162
Going down that big rock at the end was crazy great video
For a second I thought I was going to flop onto the passenger side. It is pretty sketchy in person. The video does not do it much justice!@@TriboroFishing
Bro..
U ever want a wheeling partner ill try and roll..i usually just go out with my kids.....went out to valley of the moon alone.....not 1 other driver.....c heers dude
How did the Border Patrol treat you?
They are always dicks to me. They think I am a smuggler because I am out there by myself.
@@buffettdesign
We saw only 1 BP..he was cool..he came up on me while we were down near the flat by the power station....said he saw me coming down, just wanted to see what was up.....no biggie.....
Maybe cuz i had my kids with me..
4Runner 4x4 VS Cameraman 2x2
Haha!
Pure mistreatment to that suv instead of taking care of it is not cheap
Cheers!
@@buffettdesign nice unfortunately here in Texas most of the land is fence up and belongs to someone and if u get caught trespassing is a huge deal very bummer state with the rules and no fun areas really to do such things
I hear you. It’s getting worse every year! Let’s get out there before they close up every last spot!!
That's poor 4 runner
She is all good. Gets plenty of TLC when she gets home!
Worst spotter ever 😂
Everybody has to learn dude.
