I remember being little and listening to my mom sing this song often. She passed away when I was 16, but I can still hear her voice singing along. This movie means so much to me.
For people who don't know, the reason why it starts with this scene is because the night before rent opened off Broadway, the writer dyed and the cast decided to open the show singing seasons of love in a line as a tribute to him
Before she was ever Elsa the ice queen from "Frozen," she was Moreen Johnson from "RENT" and Elphaba the witch from "Wicked." Those latter two were how Idina Menzel became my forever idol in musical theater...
Its sort of a bittersweet thing honestly. One one hand, I absolutely adore Idina Menzel and am so happy that she has become globally known due to Frozen. Seriously, it isn't often that a broadway actor/actress breaks into mainstream American cinema, let alone to the degree she has and I think she is an inspiration and role model. On the other hand, its created an entire new generation of people who only know her from Frozen, and it kind of hurts my soul to know that there are people unaware of how good she actually was when she was acting on Broadway. But you know what? Good for her. We know her from all of her old work, but its understandable that people born after the early 90's wouldn't know her from anything else, especially children born after 2000.
@@chuyitoa4838 yeah his vocal control is unreal. That Vibrato is my favorite part of the song. That guy can really sing his ass off and it’s not just singing with technical chops but with a ton of soul and emotion. Very impressive.

Although I originally heard this in Glee when The Quarterback first aired, i never actually looked into it despite singing the minutes part a lot randomly. Me and my older sister watched this yesterday (it's 6 AM now I think) and not only is the music amazing and just so beautiful, so is the movie. I recommend it highly and a reminder, it's on Netflix! :)
Yeah I agree...I thought she would have gone full throttle with the music industry and did Broadway as a second hustle to make coins when you have slow periods in film and music..!
2:15 - 2:30 2:38 - 3:11 I C O N S I actually LOVE this entire cast & song but Tracie & Jesse have the strongest most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard. I legitimately cried watching them perform this song on the RENT live show. I love them.~❤️
This is my favorite musical hands down. I had this song attached to a memorial video after my mom passed away last year. It's a constant reminder that our lives are precious, and to love each other without boundaries.
I went through a brief period where I was picking all of the issues in RENT to the point where I was embarrassed that I still liked it. Now, I'm fully back on the train. I love this musical. It talked about issues that people were too afraid to talk about in the 90s, and it changed Broadway forever. Jonathan Larson had a tragically short career, but he left his mark.
I knew a young blind man who worked on the songs containing piano playing for the Broadway Hit "Rent". Unfortunately, I found out recently that he and his sister, Lauren, were murdered in a home invasion. Rest in Peace Michael and Lauren, Love Auntie Ina
This song brings back so many amazing memories. Makes me want to cry when I hear it now. Cant believe I'm 31. Time Flys. Everyone stay safe and take care
I'm a guy and I don't usually like musicals but I do love this one. Awesome songs and an awesome story. So many feels. I haven't watched this since I was 15 so I desperately need to watch it again. ❤
I discovered this song through Glee and it has won me over ever since. Then I decided to listen to the original version of the film, and I believe that there is no one who can achieve its grandeur. I saw the Jonathan Larson movie and loved it, but I'll be honest - I've never seen the movie RENT. I'm waiting for a moment to see and celebrate and cry out, as in this song it's hard to hold back. I hope to one day hear her on broadway.

First time I watched this movie I was very young and didn’t understand it but it made me cry. Watching it when I was older? Completely broke me! Beautiful production.
When ever I listen to the songs from Rent or watch the movie I just think of Jonathan Larson creating this magical powerful musical and the lost his life before Rent made it's Broadway debut. But also Rent and the songs reminds me to never forget of the gun mass shootings that we have this past decade. The Sandy Hook, the one in Paris, Parkland school, Orlando Club, the concert in Vegas, and the country night club. Rent made me think for one another, listen to the ones who suffers a lost, listen to their hard times and just find a way to help them. And just bring Seasons of Love to everyone.
This song .. It means a lot to me , my fiance died a little over a year ago and this wasn't her favorite song but her and her family have the best home video of them singing and dancing to this when it first came out . it played at her funeral . rip Emily , love you so much .
I love this song. I saw the play years ago and I cannot recall how many times I have listened to this song when I feel the need for some inspiration. I am so, so, so grateful for Rent, and every single person involved in it. I love y'all.
Does any notice how Joanne in the very last note , holds the tone and it sounds like she is talking , singing at the end of that amazing note, gosh I love that, I always rewind the last 15 seconds about 10 times :) this movie is amazing. My boyfriend hates RENT , but he took me to the LIVE play, it was AMAZING :)
That last chord on the organ is haunting. It's really beautiful the way good writing and orchestration add yet another layer of meaning to this opening tune.
I Love that song.... they had a Great cast as well for the movie production of RENT. I remember when that played open on Broadway in the 90s.... my daughters highschool theater group just happened to be in New York..... when she phoned home to let me know that they got there safely I told her teacher about the play just opening.... he took the kids to see it! They All said it was wonderful!
This movie is a masterpiece. It’ll hit harder with every future watch. Wait and see. The world loves you. Yes you! Have a wonderful life!! Some parts may be hard, but by being hard it’s only cranking you up for a denser more beautiful experience. And the accumulation of experiences we call life!! Good bye beautiful person. 😩😮

This story goes so much deeper than just this song. It is an important reminding of what we, as a gay community went through. AIDS was a killer, and when you were diagnosed with it, you had better say your goodbyes. We were pushed to the fringe of society at that time, due to bigotry, hatred and misunderstanding, and no one wanted to hear our story. Now, gay men and women are allowed to live out loud and proud because of the stepping stones we laid out for you. Please be thankful (and say a little prayer) to my friends who have passed and allowed you to live the life that you are able to now.
It really was difficult times. Thankfully the world become better. I am not gay but I am very happy for those milestones you achieved! Hope u are having a beautiful life!
When this story is supposed to take place, I graduated from nursing school and my first job before I went into surgery as a specialty, I was assigned the night shift on an AIDS floor in San Francisco. I loved each and every patient. They loved me back because I was the only nurse that walked into the room with a smile on my face. When I had one passing or more than one person each and every night, I had to stop. I was as arriving and departing in ugly crying tears. But I miss my guys, some of the most appreciative people in my life.

<補足1>
*burn one’s bridge=橋を燃やす=退路を断つ。あとにひけない状況を作る。「燃やした橋の数で人生をはかる」と訳したら、放火犯の歌みたいになっちゃいますねえ(笑)
あとに引けない状態をつくるという意味プラス、エンジェルの最期を考えると、「彼の旅立ち」とかがしっくりくるかも?!何年前もまえのコメントにかえしてしまってごめんなさい!
Excellent. Brilliant. Versatile singing Very Mellifluous❤
Love Tracie Thoms. Her voice makes the song that much better. One of the best musicals of all time!
And after eight years... still one of my go to songs to remind me life is still worth living...
That high note alone is iconic.
❤
Although I originally heard this in Glee when The Quarterback first aired, i never actually looked into it despite singing the minutes part a lot randomly. Me and my older sister watched this yesterday (it's 6 AM now I think) and not only is the music amazing and just so beautiful, so is the movie. I recommend it highly and a reminder, it's on Netflix! :)
Ally Cat I saw it live on their anniversary traveling tour thing
lol youngin // been loving this one for years .. still not sure what glee is ;)
Tracie Thomas (Joanne) needs to sing more. She's incredible.
Yeah I agree...I thought she would have gone full throttle with the music industry and did Broadway as a second hustle to make coins when you have slow periods in film and music..!
She sang on Cold Case
I can listen to this a thousand times. Thank you Jonathan

I actually LOVE this entire cast & song but Tracie & Jesse have the strongest most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard.
Johnathan Larson is a genius. I wasn’t even thought about when this movie came out. 30 years later I still haven’t found a movie like it
It's almost impossible to not get the chills throughout this gorgeous song
I knew a young blind man who worked on the songs containing piano playing for the Broadway Hit "Rent". Unfortunately, I found out recently that he and his sister, Lauren, were murdered in a home invasion. Rest in Peace Michael and Lauren, Love Auntie Ina
and the writer died so they made this song to remember him.
+brandon felix ...the writer of rent wrote this song and died on opening day...look it up.
I think he passed away in front of the stage cast.
Alice Farrier No, he didn't. He died in his apartment.
Good lord, can this musical get any more tragic.
"Or the way that she dies"
After watching the musical, that line hits VERY hard!
....every time never fails = this song makes me miss my college friends. Such sweet, deep, and intense memories!
Whom else just hurt themselves attempting to hit that last note?
-raises hand- I am too far out of practice to hit that note.
Lol if I sing (at all) my dogs start to howl 😂
I just hit it right now and I'm so proud of myself like I want to keep doing it but it scared my family 😂😂
Good job lively living!
Bobsyermomsuncle yes,good♥♥
This song brings back so many amazing memories. Makes me want to cry when I hear it now. Cant believe I'm 31. Time Flys. Everyone stay safe and take care
I don't want to be rude but I hate how people are referring India as Elsa she is a broadway star way before she voiced Elsa
And I think she is way better in this than let it go that song is getting kind of annoying
Yes! Idina is the best singer in Broadway that I've ever heard in Wicked, Rent, Glee and Frozen.
María José Kirkland
Check for "CHESS in concert" : she is excellent in it too, along with Josh Groban and Adam Pascal.
Thanks yanndick I will do it :D
Not sure if the country was in Frozen
I'm a guy and I don't usually like musicals but I do love this one. Awesome songs and an awesome story. So many feels. I haven't watched this since I was 15 so I desperately need to watch it again. ❤
Same.

Beautiful production.
saw the original.. saw this movie. this song melded the two so so wonderful. thanks for posting
"how do we adapt the opening song of the stage version for film?" "uh... put it on a stage?" "YES! GENIUS!"
Traci Thoms STILL gets me every time.
And then she made Death Proof and proved she is literally amazing.
Still a beautiful timeless song and wonderful play. Saw it on Broadway so long ago. RIP ❤️JL
The smile on everyone's faces when Tracie so effortlessly hit that note 😁
This song .. It means a lot to me , my fiance died a little over a year ago and this wasn't her favorite song but her and her family have the best home video of them singing and dancing to this when it first came out . it played at her funeral . rip Emily , love you so much .
This song will always hold a special place in my heart. It's gotten me through a lot of rough times.
I love this song. I saw the play years ago and I cannot recall how many times I have listened to this song when I feel the need for some inspiration. I am so, so, so grateful for Rent, and every single person involved in it. I love y'all.
this always manages to remind me of my childhood, growing up in Jersey city. Thank you, John Larson

Still one of the most powerful songs and performances in existence
You know growing up that last note the black chick whaled on always seemed hit my soul!!! Craaaazy how good her range is💕😭
Riveting. Inspirational. Sublime harmonies. Thank God for this song and this performance.
They All said it was wonderful!
this production is life itself. the music is pretty much the same, the story line is heart wrenching. I LOVE IT
I loved the part when Jesse L. Martin sang he really truly has a markable voice
This was a moment it time I adored. I was happy to be here for it. So much pain, beauty, and art to behold.
I remember hearing this lady belt "love" out... 7 years later I still get goosebumps. What a bop!
every one keeps saying Joe from flash. I must be old or something cause I remember him from law and order and the other lady from cold case
dariceblade666 to all people, his name Jesse L. Martin. And you're right he was in law and order
And mark Anthony Rapp was in Adventures in babaysitting and dazed and confused
It took years before I realized that Anthony was the same guy in Adventures in Babysitting. That was my movie growing up!

How could 1300 people not like this? I love the musical, and this song is the apex of it, IMO.
Because it’s a lot like California. In the sense that it’s full of aids and it’s gae
So well tuned , three and a quarter Minutes!.. The song has a bittersweet flavour which runs with the theme of the musical..
Spectacular voices. Outstanding movie, soundtrack and play.
This song always makes me cry, it is literally perfect. All versions sung are fantastic
that note at 2:55 gives me chills every. single. time.
Amazing vocals. The harmonies in the chorus are phenomenal!
That note from Traci Thoms will forever be my goal to hit. SO amazing

I love Rent for years and I finally convinced my boyfriend to watch it last night with me. He really enjoyed it and said he finally understood what I meant all these years. This musical is amazing, the story is beautiful, funny and engaging, the characters are impacting and the songs are fantastic! Love Rent with all my heart!!
Oh my GOD what an incredible song and cast. I saw the second iteration of cast in NYC and have never forgotten this amazing work.
RIP Jonathan Larson, you life literally mirrored the modern La Boheme that you wrote. 😎🤔🤗😲🥰🤫👆🙏🏼👍🏽💞🙏🙏🏾🙏🏻🙏🏿👍🏼👍🏻🙏🏾💞👍🏿🙏🙏🏾💞💗💖🔥💞🙏🏻
Thank you 🙏🏾
💟
When this story is supposed to take place, I graduated from nursing school and my first job before I went into surgery as a specialty, I was assigned the night shift on an AIDS floor in San Francisco. I loved each and every patient. They loved me back because I was the only nurse that walked into the room with a smile on my face. When I had one passing or more than one person each and every night, I had to stop. I was as arriving and departing in ugly crying tears. But I miss my guys, some of the most appreciative people in my life.
God bless you all. ❤
One of the most traditional songs in musical history.
OMG I was searching for this song for years!! I heard this song when i was in elementary school and wanted to hear it again so much. So glad that I finally found it
What I love the most about this movie is that almost everyone from the original Broadway cast reprised their roles
The Mimi is different. Rosario Dawson plays Mimi in the movie, but Daphne Rubin-Vega was the original Broadway actress.
That's why I said "almost" :)
that high note wow wow just amazing the ending oh my god
