I've got three Squiers and two Fenders. The difference is minimal with a little bit of TLC and some parts you can make the Squire just as good as the fender.
The Squier sounds best in that raw form over the Fender. The Fender is a lot more clean in tone, which means you have a lot of directions you can take with the tone if you add pedals. Like I'd much rather put the Fender through a Chase Bliss board any day over the Squier. Any pedalboard would work well with the Fender, you would have to be more picky with what you give the Squier. Meanwhile, that Squier would be incredible for Blues music. You would only need some sort of blues based overdrive, and you'd have an amazing tone. The sound is a lot more focused toward a particular tone, which is great if you want a guitar with that focus.
I do repair work and customize guitars all the time. You are just paying for the name with fender/gibson.. any of the big brands. And an electric is only as good as the pickups and the amp you use. Everything else is just quality control. A couple hrs with a small file, sandpaper a few basic tools and some steel wool and that squire will play and feel better than the fender. Buying the name for more $ is just dumb and a waste of funds that none of us have anymore. Over spending isn’t a flex, it’s just ignorant and juvenile now days. Use google and you’ll see what I’m talking about. The woods and finish mean nothing on an electric. And the basswood body is lighter on the Squire
They both sound fine, not that much of a difference really, especially for thousands of dollars more, its ridiculous. The only reason one cost more is because of the name on the headstock...which means NOTHING AT ALL...unless you're some kind of collector or something like that.
@@wesleyAlan9179the reason the fender is so expensive is that it’s a relic guitar, has high-end materials, and has much better quality on the body and neck. all that matter is the amp. the pick ups will be a slight factor, but the amp is making the most of the tone. settings on the guitar/strings etc will just impact other subtle parts of the tone itself
The amp is not that important as long as it's valve and has a decent clean channel ( most do ) , pedals can do the rest. As for pickups I find they can make a huge difference to tone. In this demo I think the Custom shop Strat's pickups sound a lot thinner than the squire.
I bought a 1979 all black fender Strat with a maple neck, back in 2004, for $700. Ppl crap on the 70s CBS era strats, but to me, it sounds and plays awesome. They put out a Japanese squire version of my guitar, back in 83, and I would love to hunt one down and buy it. The Japanese squires were just as good as some of the USA stuff they put out nowadays.
When I first started playing guitar in 99, my soccer coach, who also played, told me to find a Japanese strat. He ended selling me his 1996 50th anniversary mij 62 reissue sunburst strat. He bought a custom shop strat that looked similar, hoping his wife wouldn't find out. 😂
For those who can't perceive the difference between single coil, humbucker, ceramic and AlNiCo. Here's a good example on singles ceramic and AlNiCo on a really nice clean tone. Ceramic singles are warm, naturally saturated and a little darker. AlNiCo singles are brighter, have more definition and have less saturation. Bro your so smooth you make the cheaper ones sound great with. Good amp and the right tones and volume you came really make a guitar sing even a squire I think they made them a little to good for the price lol
The squire sounded warmer, bit i liked the attack of the strat. I played a squier strat for years, gigged with it and everything. Never let me down, stayed in tune and took a beating. Helluva guitar.
The difference is like the difference between a base model car and a luxury model…they both function the same as cars, you’re paying extra for everything else

The squire has a poplar body. I find this wood sounds better with gain. The fender is alder so it’s a littler heavier weight wise and will be “cleaner/brighter”
When I was into playing guitar in 7th grade I’d focus in on the the brand of guitars bands were playing and once in awhile you’d catch an Epiphone or but never saw a Squier
The brightness of the custom strat and the equal tone for every string you just can’t beat that sound on the high strings of a good strat 🎉 please donate me one pleaseeeeeeeeee
The squire didn’t sound bad at all. The lows were a little muddy. The fender had more of a controlled sound. For the money I’d choose the Squier. Fender for the win though.
I used to dismiss on relic reissues, but they’ve grown on me. The difference between a factory import and a hand built custom shop is big, especially in overall feel when you play. I tried it blind and it’s telling. Doesn’t mean you need the most expensive thing out there to play or sound good. But a killer axe will inspire and motivate creativity better than something frustrating to handle.
New budget guitars are actually built pretty well these days, way better than in the 80s and 90s. I played the crud out of some cheap guitars back then!!!
I’ve always preferred the sound of a Squier, just because I think it sounds punchier, but you can never go wrong with the dreamy tone that u get from a fender. Either way I can make my squier sound just as dreamy 💀
The pickups on the Squier are a little higher output, that's about it for tonal differences. If the Squier plays well and you don't mind probable exploitation of labor, then yeah, a Squier Strat will still do all of the Strat things.
It's not just the tone, it's also how it feels to play.. I mean it's pretty much common knowledge now that you(whoever) and I can sit down play the exact same guitar, same settings, volume etc and we could produce quite a different tone/sound. Though the years, I've played alotta dif guitars, strangely tho never a strat. And now this is some years back, my brother had a squire strat just sitting in his closet, as his gig and studio guitars wernt the squire strat.. anyway he gave it to me.. and of all the stuff I've played. It's my favorite electric guitar to pick up and play.
Yeah, they did sound similar...two things that will make your elections way simplier once you acknowledge them: in terms of sounds, the biggest difference will be a good amp (not the guitar itself) AND in the guitar world ou pay more for how comfortable the instrument is and the logo attached to the headstock than the SOUND itself (although we talk about music, the touch of a smooth, well balanced, not too heavy neck and soft, well pulished frets are things you pay for...maybe an extremely large difference it's hard to justify).
On most speakers the Squier just sounds more compressed. But if you put on headphones you can hear more low-mid muddiness from the Squier. I’m hearing a much cleaner tone from the Fender. That being said…I’m sure the Squier is a setup and a few upgrades away from sounding indistinguishable from that Fender.
Sound comparisons between cheap and expensive are usually a waste of time. The expensive ones will sound better. But not $10,000 better. Even when comparing a $200 guitar to a $6-700 guitar. You can EASILY make the cheaper one sound better than the higher priced model for less money than what you'd pay by just buying the higher priced model to begin with. The _REAL_ difference between cheap and expensive guitars is something that no video can ever show. It's how much better it FEELS to play. And even then, for examples like this, it will absolutely feel a lot better, but can anyone really say it's $10,000+ better?
The difference is miles , can even compare these two. The fender one is crispy yet warm, has high end yet very deep tone. They created a masterpiece worth every penny
@lukeluke295 Shocking lol I sent it back and bought a CV 70's olympic white. The extra £140 was in a whole new ballpark. It sounds better than the fender USA model. Honestly it really does.
I get where you're going, but the overpriced one is supposed to look "road worn", which is why it looks all scratched up. A lot of Fender Custom Shop guitars are just their own products but they make them look more vintage by making them have scratches to show years of age (Even though it isn't actually aged.)
I love the Squiers. I have 2 of them Affinity. I love that Fender makes budget friendly guitars for beginners and even pro's. I cant affort a real fender but i have the sound en feeling now. Great Guitars!!!!
I remember someone saying to me, “You need decent gear if you’re going to gig regularly… But if I could buy a car for the same amount of money? The guitar is overpriced”
Nothing sounds better than a full american strat however, the 2013 deluxe studio with american noisless pickups MIM (only made for 6 months) sounds amazing and very close to a american strat
I had a Fender Squier that I would put against any American Fender out there and with the right combinations that guitar sounded fantastic. I ran it through a Fender Champion 100 with a boss super chorus a boss digital delay and it sounded amazing
As long as a guitar has a really well finished neck that suits your hands and your particular playing style, - fretboard radius, neck profile, and fret type - then you are most of the way there. The other factor is high quality pickups. A superb neck and pickups are definitely worth paying good money for, but you don't need to pay anywhere near 10,000 for a great playing guitar. In fact anything over 1500 to 2000 is going into obscene territory imho, and has more to do with the success of guitar brand marketing. The one exception is if you are looking for a period perfect piece, but even then!
I'd get neither. Depending on the budget, you can go for a higher end squier or a lower end mexican fender and do some upgrades. if you can shell a bit more, a higher end mexican like a Vintera or some of the signature ones (or even a good Japanese strat) can be perfect. If you really want to go higher, you can get an American Reissue and just call it the day. Not to mention that all of these options can be found at compelling prices on the second hand market. So yeah, far better options than either to settle for a sub par instrument, or get into debt for no reason.
If you try both and don’t find any differences, good for you, you save a lot of money. Unfortunately for me, I do feel the difference when I try them 😂
The only reason Squier exists is because Fender copies became better than the original. I recently bought a Strat copy and it has upgraded bridge, locking tuners, nicer neck, and actually working tone knobs for $120. Feels and sounds great. The name on the label has been irrelevant for decades.
If you are intermediate there is no need to buy overpriced or cheap guitar, just buy something around 600-1000$ and it’s already would be enough for at least 10-15 years(of course if you not collecting them😅). There is only reason to buy cheap guitar when you are beginner but still it’s not supposed to be non-brand wood stick with strings, any brand like Fender, Yamaha, Ibanez or Epiphone(if u wanna Les Paul shape) usually are good for learning music. My recommendation is Yamaha Pacifica 012j or 112j but choose only what you really like.😅
Everyone talking about the sound needs to understand that pickups, bridges and nuts can all be changed and each one individually helps affect tone. My hands tell me what guitar to play based on the feel. Trust me feel is EVERYTHING. I've got a 2010 Les Paul Studio that I will die with, ive had other more expensive and less expensive guitars but this one spoke to me. Find that guitar for you and everything else won't matter😊
They will sound somewhat the same, but the more expensive one will have more of a stable neck, stay in tune a lot longer, wont have any snag points where the lighter strings can break, the electronics wont be as noisy, and the frets will be sanded to perfection. Still, it's not a difference worth 10k, 1k maybe.
it's not about the sound. it's about the quality of the neck, frets. tuning, workmanship. will it stay in tune? will the knobs fall off? will the electronics fail?
90% is down to the player... And a good Luthier and a few hundred bucks can close any quality difference by a lot for an end result that will save about 9.5 - 10k
Obviously there's a big difference in sound but i happen to like both . The Squier £159 sound muddy , less clear compared to the heavily priced and relicked custom shop £10,999.
Feel is more important in my opinion. You can always swap pickups to change the sound of a guitar but you can’t do much to a guitar that plays like crap.
I think as long as its at least a half decent model I think you can still get good sound out of them. Ones that are worth like £40 worth 2nd hand like of a westfield strat copy don't sound great. But the westfield les paul copy deluxe I have still sounds great and its a half decent guitar 🎸
Ill say it once ill say it again, youre not paying premium for the sound youre paying premium for build quality and quality of materials used. You can make a cheap guitar sound good but will the frets be level? Will the frets be stainless? Will the fingerboard be real rosewood? Will it stay in tune? Are the pots and switches actually good? Etc. i bought a player series strat and after a setup, locking tuners, new pickups, fret Polish, new saddles, new nut it finally felt like an American standard lol.
Most people have already said it but the sound quality if you have a good amp can be pretty negligible. The difference is the playability of the guitar. That being said, I don’t think the custom shops are 10K better.
And a proper quality of video as well to show the real differences with a good audio system...This tiktok kind of videos with a lof of compression are so bad to show this kind of content.
I’ll take cheap squire and live a better life for a year with the $10,800

The Squire sounds a bit harsh and dirty, whilst the Fender sounds a bit cleaner
I'd get neither. Depending on the budget, you can go for a higher end squier or a lower end mexican fender and do some upgrades. if you can shell a bit more, a higher end mexican like a Vintera or some of the signature ones (or even a good Japanese strat) can be perfect. If you really want to go higher, you can get an American Reissue and just call it the day.
Not to mention that all of these options can be found at compelling prices on the second hand market. So yeah, far better options than either to settle for a sub par instrument, or get into debt for no reason.
Buy the squire and change out the pots and pickups . If you are rich and have money to blow, get the fender custom shop .
To save a ton of money, the Squire is absolutely good enough. No matter what, you can always pick out the sound of a Strat out of a hundred guitars.
Guy playing fender is now a rock legend whereas guy paying squier is still stuck in his basement
If you try both and don’t find any differences, good for you, you save a lot of money. Unfortunately for me, I do feel the difference when I try them 😂
The master built Fender sounds a bit sweeter since its pickups are made of alnico. But there is no difference of 9800 quids between them.
And even that doesn't make it better. Just different.
My recommendation is Yamaha Pacifica 012j or 112j but choose only what you really like.😅
Doesn't make any sense to compare these 2.
Try the cheapest Fender vs most expensive Squire instead.
Don’t get your panties in a knot
Fender tiene una explosión de agudos maravillosa.
Both sounds great
Obviously there's a big difference in sound but i happen to like both . The Squier £159 sound muddy , less clear compared to the heavily priced and relicked custom shop £10,999.
Feel is more important in my opinion. You can always swap pickups to change the sound of a guitar but you can’t do much to a guitar that plays like crap.
Eddie Van Halen created his “FrankenStrat” out of a seconds body for $50 and an $80 neck… spare parts for the rest. So there’s that…
much more presence in the fender but is it really worth the price jump?
And people say a Gibson is overpriced. Buying that Fender strat is straight robbery.
Squier sounds incredible good compared to the amount of bucks
I cannot perceive the Fender sounding 10999/159=69 times better than the Squier
Jimi Hendrix is known for his ability to produce good music on even the cheapest guitars.
I think as long as its at least a half decent model I think you can still get good sound out of them. Ones that are worth like £40 worth 2nd hand like of a westfield strat copy don't sound great. But the westfield les paul copy deluxe I have still sounds great and its a half decent guitar 🎸
Thanks for proving the point...
I use the squier affinity and it’s really good
me and squier watching in disbelief
Ill say it once ill say it again, youre not paying premium for the sound youre paying premium for build quality and quality of materials used. You can make a cheap guitar sound good but will the frets be level? Will the frets be stainless? Will the fingerboard be real rosewood? Will it stay in tune? Are the pots and switches actually good? Etc. i bought a player series strat and after a setup, locking tuners, new pickups, fret Polish, new saddles, new nut it finally felt like an American standard lol.
Is one going through the vox and the other going though the katana?
Most people have already said it but the sound quality if you have a good amp can be pretty negligible. The difference is the playability of the guitar. That being said, I don’t think the custom shops are 10K better.
MY GOD I LOVE MU GUITAR SOO MUCH AND IT PLAYS AMAZING
i have that squier and its just amazing to play anything you want
If this is legit - fender should be ashamed of itself.
In my experience it's not so much how they sound it's how they feel and play in your hand that's where you'll feel a big difference.
Zakk Wylde made a $50 Hello Kitty acoustic guitar sing like an angel. It's not the equipment, it's the person playing.
The real magic is the mullet here; beautiful piece of work…
Actually preferred the Squier on this particular example strangely enough...
The tone and clarity is difference. You need a good headphone to hear the difference
And a proper quality of video as well to show the real differences with a good audio system...This tiktok kind of videos with a lof of compression are so bad to show this kind of content.
