This is what my Grandad did, my Dad's Dad. He was a driver for the LMS. Started with the Midland Railway in the late 19th century. Retired from the LMS towards the end of the 1930s. The engine featured here is Royal Scot 6170 British Legion. I know my Grandad drove Royal Scots towards the end of his career, but I don't know if he ever drove this one. It's very interesting to see this. A pity that the images are so unclear. I expect it was sharper originally...? Thanks for posting.

It’s a pity than only a minority of steam sheds had these facilities. Right to the end of steam power some sheds required manual coaling of locomotives involving loading tubs which were lifted and tipped into tenders and even direct shovelling from a platform or coal waggon into the tender. Brutal work for the shed crew (Cleaners, Passed Cleaners). And yet, I would have chosen your Great Grandfather’s life!

@@stephensmith799 Not my Great Grandfather, just my Grandfather - my Father's Father. Not so many generations ago. He started as a cleaner with the Midland Railway in Derby in the 1880s, and died in 1953, having lived just long enough to hold me, as a baby, in his arms. So, I never actually knew him personally, just heard family stories about him.

The more I see these films of how our railways were operated, I think its a wonder there were not more accidents. Or perhas we've gone H & S bonkers now !!!
Anyway, it's so good that these films are available so the younger generation can see part of their history. Thanks.

I worry that these films will be too long and not 'enough' to engage folks. That would be a shame. To appreciate what you have you need to respect what went before

Watching the dirt swirling about it’s easy to see why steam had to go, men today would rightly not tolerate such conditions.
On the GWR the job of cleaning the firebox was given to the junior most cleaner. If the residual heat wasn’t bad enough, some senior cleaner might creep up and shut the fire door, while his mates would light an oily rag under the engine.

As for the loco 6170 - a little info from Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LMS_Royal_Scot_Class_6170_British_Legion

What is the fireman putting into the firebox at 16:17 ? Looks like a sort of tunnel or a gardening cloche! Maybe to split the coal to the sides, though that's easy enough for a fireman to achieve.

I believe it’s called a battle plate or something like that. It helps direct secondary air through the fire hole door and over the fire
