As someone who always hated metallics, it’s super interesting to see your approach to TMM. Really interesting use of directional drybrushing, and as always, the final result looks fantastic!
Thanks
This tutorial was really great!
@Dracobyte thanks
Hi Juan - quick question. There is a lot of noise online about not using nice brushes for contrast/shade/metallic paints. I noticed you use nice brushes without a problem. Would you mind commenting on this and how you make sure they don't get ruined? Thank you
Brushes WILL get ruined no matter what you do. It's the nature of painting with acrylics using watercolor brushes.
One you accept that, you stop bothering and just assume your brushes are a consumable.
That being said there are a couple things you can do to extend the life of your brushes when using contrast or shade paints. These paints really like to go up into your ferrule, so using a large brush with long bristles helps. Also never put a dry brush into shade or contrast, always pre load it with water so there's liquid in the ferrule preventing those paints from creeping up too much.
Metallic paints are a bit more aggressive to your brushes it's true but I personally don't care and I also haven't felt they have a shorter life this way. For me a super sharp tip is extremely important and that usually gets damaged way before than the damage caused by using metallic paints shows up anyway.
Hope that makes sense.
Fun fact: The golden girls in the first season were the same age as the sex and the city women in their movie. Funny how we perceive age.
WOW
Reminding the Golden Girls opening song!
That's not true.
I'm sure makeup had something to do with it. In both cases 😄
Maybe I'm just a dodderer these days, but I'm still surprised to see Custodes as an actual army. I remember when the closest thing you'd get to a Custodes army was an absolute beauty of a passion project they published in WD, some... I think it's just about twenty years back now? Fairly certain it was Fat Bloke in the Editor's seat.
Loved that article. You could practically hear the guy's smile in the words on the page.
I actually agree, I personally think Custodes should have stayed almost mythical in nature
Fat Bloke is a legend. Absolute great guy and his run of White Dwarf was my favorite.
The Horus Heresy art books had a lot of people doing conversions. Dave Taylor had a really nice conversion mash up of High Elves and Space Marines that eventually became a 1,000 point army for the team tournament that was featured in White Dwarf maybe like 2005/2006
I had a Dark Angel army for the same team that was all de-arrowed Chaos models, with all green stuff heads and swapped out elbow pads using a Dogs Of War bit
I feel like with the contrast wash it looks more copper than gold
I will borrow this scheme for my future Stromcasts, it looks great
Thanks
Another awesome video, and just ordered the drybrush set (through the link) to give them a whirl. Would love to see more vids on how you go about using them on other projects too.
Thanks
Which of the Xpress range would you use instead of the two Contrast ones? Copper Brown seems close but not quite, not sure, might be the right one
Great question.
The problem of copper brown is, it's too opaque, you want a more transparent paint. What I would do personally is to use Battledress Brown and medium instead.
It will be a completely different hue but still a super cool one and the transparency will be what you want.
Excellent work with this. I don't play Custodes, but I bought a Blade Champion back when it released a few years ago because the model looked cool. I never got around to painting it, and now I can with this gold recipe. Thanks!
Happy to help!
Is the Game Color Silver and the Metal Color Air Silver pretty much the same? I like different golds on my minis.
It's basically the same paint
Una formula genial y un acabado excelente! ¿Podrías recomendarme una alternativa de Agaros Dunes y Gore Grunta Fur en la gama de Vallejo Xpress?
I cannot believe the DISRESPECT for the lore happening here! Everyone knows the left shoulder pad represents their loyalty to the Emperor! It's unacceptable that 'tourists' like you think you can swap it around all willy nilly. 😜
Sorry I failed you all
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures You failed the Emperor
Heresy!
Totally.
He's a horrible person (or vegetable) I have no issues with that.
Great video as usual 👍🏻
Do you think it is possible to use reikhland flesh shade instead of agaros dune / gg fur mix ? And what about liberator gold instead of retributor / silver mix ? Even if it is not ideal, do you think it can make the job ? Thanks in advance. Last noob question : is it possible to use the wash first and then drybrushing when the wash is fully dry.
This is a great and flexible recipe - being using a variant of this (sometimes just tinting over Vallejo Air Silver, not using gold at all as base), but the drybrushing + contrast was very instructional.
I wonder if the contrast over silver would work well.
Love this take on the female Custodes. I have zero problem lore-wise there - Custodians are already extraordinarily rare humans one in millions or rarer. I think at that point the starting point sex is essentially unimportant.
It will work over plain silver yes, it will just have less depth and you will probably need a different tinting colour
On the lore, I think most people's problem is them trying to say it was always a thing. Previous editions made it pretty clear Custodes were only dudes. They can change it now, but just be honest with the fans that's what you are doing.
I have no dog in the fight. Golden bananas are all too shiny for my taste.
Great advanced version of what I'm currently doing, I might stick with Darcy's version (cos she got in first and I started doing it already), but this is bookmarked now too
Darcy is amazing
Prueba para meter shade al oro el crusader skin de speedpaint y me cuentas 😊,
No tengo speedpaints, y no voy a comprarlas pero te agradezco la sugerencia para los demás !
By the way, I loved your answer on Twitter to anyone calling you woke:
"Have them not ever seen any of my videos or my twitter feed?
I've always been woke AF! I'm Basque!"
Basque Country is one of the most, if not the most progressive region in Spain. Not only that but we Basque leftists are some of the most hardcore leftists in the country.
Even most right wing people here would be considered "communists" in the USA

@benjaminwenham7759 Eskerrik Asko!
[A comment about the actual paintjob]
I find it interesting that (other than the basecoat, obviously) the paints you use are primarily silvers. I find my gold lacks contrast because i fall into the trap of trying to gradually work up through a gold basecoat with progressively brighter gold tones.
Yes! It's a very interesting thing indeed. We need to increase the contrast in temperature and value too.
Metallic paints are hard to work with
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures maybe starting with a copper with some aggrax estate mixed in might be a good dark base to stay with?
Mmmmm, I think starting with a mix of Retributor and a very dark metallic can work for sure to increase the contrast
Awesome video! Do you use matte or gloss varnish on the gold after at all?
I recommend satin
been planning my one custodes mini for a moment (I'm not a player anymore, I just paint a mini or two on occasion)
I appreciate your take on gold is a bit more faded, lotsa people painting metallic minis have a tendency to just make one coat of metal, for metallic greys it kinda works, but for gold, it's another matter.
I agree! Gold requires more subtlety
Fantastic video as always Juan!! You make it look so simple!
Thanks!!
Thank youy for this Gold tutorial, I'm always looking to improve my recipie and this might just do the trick!
Happy to help!
Looks awesome! Totally gonna use this method for my stormcast as well
Thanks!!
I'm digging that technique. Essentially sketching in your values and then tinting it, which is a favourite around here. But with metallics. Simple and efficient.
Thanks! It's just so versatile
That drybrush set is only $43 in Australia so that's a great deal. Sadly the referral doesn't work though.
I ordered some Rosemary and Co brushes. The size 1 seems like a size 0. I think I'll stick to Raphael.
Yeah R&Co brushes are smaller than the rest, you have to order big. My favourite is the 3.
The drybrush set is a STEAL
Fantástico video! Sigue así 😊
Gracias 😘
Nice job....still don´t like the lore update. GW was lazy to just say "Oh they can be female"....they could have come up with new unit types, a combination of custodes and SoS, faster and weaker then Custodes, powerarmor houshold themed but stronger then the Sisiters .....would expand the Custodes range into more unit types (more models:) )...they look so plain in my eyes at the momment tbh
Thanks! Disliking the update is totally fine, we are all entitled to our opinions.
Thank you for the video! Amazing as always ❤
Thanks!
gold looks nice ,thx for resumen 👍
Thanks for watching!
Awesome as always! 😍 Can we get a tutorial for all the rest of this mini please?! Thank you!
Head and Sword are in my Patreon. The rest is super simple, just ask.
Me encanta como te ha quedado, buen trabajo!
Gracias
Definitely going to be trying this on my sisters of battle or the new stormcast when sigmar 4 drops! This looks rad and pretty simple.
Thanks
Superb as always. Thanks mate
Thanks for watching!
Very very nice. Thank you for the painting guide you have created. Curious question, instead of 1:1 retributor and silver, would liberator gold have the same gold, silverish finish?
Yes, very close. I just prefer the mix as it has better coverage
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ahh cool. Thanks again for the feedback
@tien65 happy to help
Those Artify drybushes are soooo good, well worth the modest price
100%!!
They are a total steal
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures used them for the first time this week, o was genuinely astonished, the smoothest finish I've ever achieved with a dry brush
Great video as always!!!
Thanks
THIS!!! THANK YOU! I've been stuck on my gold recipe forever. This solves my problem.
Happy to help!
I bought the dry brushes because of your recommendation. Superb brushes. 😊
Thanks!
Fantastic paintjob, as always. Enjoy the ratio 👌
Thanks! Considering it's sitting at 71% positive, yes I am enjoying the ratio very much
One of the better gold tutorials I have watched. And definitely the one with the best payoff/labor ratio I have seen. Absolutley gonna test for my upcoming custodes.
Thanks!! I love making the Zero Skill series
This is so cool! Just discovered your channel. Subscribed!
Really nice results with this recipe. Would love to try it out on some Stormcast minis too!
Thanks!
Juan I'm really disappointed...
You said "zero skill" but man I bet that if I tried the result wouldn't be half as amazing as yours! You ROCK!
A question, if you don't mind. At your current level of skill/expertise, would you consider, for heavily trimmed armours (let's say Night Lords), working on metal trims first and rest of the armour later? (Aimed result: high level gaming standard)
Also, thank you for treating this "hot" topic your way. I'm not into femstodes (giving more love to the sisters of silence would have been a much more interesting choice from gw imo) but the golden ladies... lol 😂😂❤
Thanks mate, I really appreciate it.
I would personally do the armour first and then the trim, always paint from the inside out, makes for a cleaner result
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you for the advice 🙏
I don't get why you need to make fake gilliman flesh when we got this already in the pot?
Not the same this is more yellow but feel free to use that! It's also amazing
Very nice! The gold actually look very close to those 'Eavy Metal armors on box art. And it's super easy to do (at least it seems to be).
Thanks! That was the idea, I really appreciate it
Amazing work on that gold!
Thanks 😘
Fantastic work
Thanks
Man, that looks great.
Thanks
Awesome look on the armor! I need to go look up your power weapons video to get that going too.
YEAH! THANKS
Amazing video as always. Thank you for sharing.
Also on the political side, I am so happy that we are finally getting Femstodes. I cannot wait for my female space marines.
And as a bonus, I cannot wait to see all these Fascists manchildren seething and crying and yelling.
Thanks!
He deserves more subs!
Great job! Just what I needed
Happy to help
Lovely tutorial. Will admit, I am not a fan of the lore change, theres other areas where females need a bit more love instead, like the sisters of silence, more women in the chaos side would be nice.
And we need more sisters of battle😁 I cant get enough of that beautiful army.
Thanks
Man Custodes have to be the easiest army to make cause there just one base color. While i wont be making any female custodes im definitely using this for my goldboys thanks Juan
EASIEST army to paint, yes they are full of details but it's all one colour.
Also, I respect your choice
Also - probably the least number of models per army!
Great video, thanks!
Thanks
Just for the Golden Girls meme imma subscribe, the awesome paintjob and guide has absolutely nothing to do with it, no sir-ee
Thanks!
Only one Word... Awesome 🤘🤯
Thanks!!
Juan, amazing video! i just got my Custodes Combat Patrol (Out of stock in some online stores) and got some 3d party women head options, now with this tutorial i will make my minis look cool!
YEAH!
Es la primera vez que veo una técnica como esta para pintar dorados. Me dieron ganas de probarla con las pintiras que tengo disponibles para pintar unos stormcast. Gran video.
Gracias!
Excellent as always, Juan! 😍
Thanks!
I hate this model, too much blue 😅
Ok, for real though. I wish I had 1/4th of your talent. So good!
Thanks
I have no words to describe my outrage at this blatant heresy!
Even a casual should know that the Crux Terminatus is an Astartes award.
Very nice TMM. Quick and easy to follow. What more could be asked for?
I'm sorry I failed you
nice job. Why not use a brown wash like agrax instead of the mix of contrast paints?
Good question!
It's not tinting enough, I don't only want to shade the recessed but also to colour the surface if that makes sense
I bought like 5 of those dry brush set months ago. Very good quality but kinda of smells like wet dog when wet.
I haven't noticed myself but worth the discount IMO
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures agreed I’ll take the small over cost.
Hello juan
😘
Lovely work as usual ! I am curious to see if GW will release dedicated minis for Custodes ladies in the future
Me too!
Or more Sisters of Silence.
Great looking gold.
Thanks
Excellent gold recipe. Good advice on which stormcast to use for the headswap too.
Thanks! Happy to help!
Me encantaria ver el resto de la mini tambien Juan, el proceso que has seguido para la espada y gemas, esta espectacular

Y para el cuero y la cara tienes referencias? Te preguntaria hasta por la base, me gusta mucho el acabado que le has dado Juan

Hey Juan, that's another really good tutorial. You always give me the feeling that I can really try out the techniques myself and achieve good results. But I'm sorry that the latest video has caused such a controversy, I can't understand it at all.
Just one question about the video. You say that you remove the excess color on your wet palette. Did you really mean the wet palette, because doesn't that make the brush too wet for dry brushing?
Greetings from Germany
Yes, I do use the wet palette, it helps the brush maintain a bit of moisture so the drybrushing is smoother.
I use the redgrass re-usable papers btw, and the level of moisture in the surface is just perfect.
Also thanks, I really appreciate it
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you! :)
Gracias
As someone that has kinda been glancing at the Stormcast Eternals this video may one day be very helpfull!
YES!! The method here can very much be used on them no problem
Props to you for painting this conversion! Enjoying your content and tips as always. TY!

If you could only use Vallejo’s paints which colors will you use?
There are no good Vallejo rich golds buy you could use Scale75 Viking Gold instead, and I would probably use Battledress Brown as the shade mixed with medium

YES! It's also a super good kit. You can play Warcry with it and have some extra heads for your Golden Ladies
Thank you for the video-not only for its content, but also for the courage to post it in this fandom full of gatekeeping bigots. Hopefully, it won't impact your channel anything but positively, but even if it does, please remember that weeding out your garden only makes it healthier.
I'm not worried at all and thanks mate I really appreciate it.
It's people like you that I make videos for.
Why are you calling them all bigots? I am into the femstodes, but I wouldn’t call all those who aren’t “bigots”, as a generalisation. That makes US bigots. Too ironic, we must be better and appreciate people genuinely just don’t appreciate changes to established lore, and that’s fine. I personally just like new cool models.
@@TheGlobuleReturnsbecause they don't complain much about all the other changes to the "lore" that happen all the time - but they get very bent out of shape at what's honestly an incredibly minor clarification. This is not a big change, and people who think it is are *telling on themselves*
@@TheGlobuleReturnsalso bigotry isn't as simple as "generalisation" that's not at all how it works
@@KaeEbonrai Oh they do… primaris was hilarious when it came out. People were mocking them like crazy. I’d imagine the fuel to the fire that was missing back then to blow it into something more was an opposition of people calling the people mocking the retcon bigots!
caught me offguard with that golden girls damn i used to watch it back in the days
So good!
