  • The West is the New Culture Forum's landmark six-part documentary series exploring the history, achievements and genius of Western civilisation. Inspired by legendary TV programmes such as Civilisation, Kenneth Clark's 1969 masterpiece, The West is a bold reminder of who we are -- and why our culture is worth defending.
Episode 5: How Did The West REALLY Get So Rich?
Beginning with the age of exploration, this episode plunges into the West’s tumultuous and at times traumatic expansion out of Europe. From the accidental discovery of the Americas to the British Empire’s ending of the slave trade, Marc Sidwell offers a nuanced account of the West’s imperial and colonial phase. He also demolishes the persistent myth that slavery and plunder made the West rich, revealing instead the real answer: economic growth powered by industrial capitalism.
New episodes of The West premiere weekly, here on our UA-cam channel:
Episode 1: Liberty or Death: • Genius of Western Civi...
Episode 2: The Christian Revolution: • Genius of Western Civi...
Episode 3: The Rule of Law: • Genius of Western Civi...
Episode 4: The Invention of Science: • Genius of Western Civi...
Episode 5: How Did The West Get So Rich?
Episode 6: Is The West History?
    ABOUT THE SERIES:
In six 30-40 minute episodes, The West offers a brand new, panoramic account of our extraordinary, unconventional civilisation. This is the great, and still unfolding adventure of Western civilisation: who we are and why it matters, retold for a new generation.
The West is written and presented by Marc Sidwell, Senior Fellow at the New Culture Forum and author of the NCF's critically acclaimed book: "The Long March: How the Left Won the Culture War and What To Do About it".

Thomas Sowell argues that slavery was not because of racism. It only became about race once it was firmly established in the West
Up until then , people were enslaved because of their vulnerability , he goes on to state .

This series is really interesting and thought provoking. By far it reaffirms my pride in being from the west and yet does not reduce my worry for the attacks on our way of life. Our sense of right and fairness is in some ways a weakness. It was heartening to learn much about how hard the west worked towards abolishing the Atlantic slave trade and how slavery has been endemic in most cultures

Except it doesn't just keep getting better and better but is interrupted by reversals. The business cycle and the world wars. It is Marx who put economy and human history on a materialist scientific basis. It is his analysis that reveals the origins of the reversals. The direction that capitalist development takes and why it will come to an end. Had Britain NOT experienced a banking crisis would it have gone to war with Germany and how wise was it to impose the Treaty of Versailles upon Germany?

It took the west 1500 years to grind through everything and end up with a civilised way of life. But then we gave everything away to people who haven't gone through the same development, who were living with the same mentality as they were living 2000 years ago. That's why, when countries who claimed independence back from the UK, they seem to revert back to their old ways and never progress any further.

It has been once of the most profound pieces of advice I was ever given. It appears to me that the way social studies/ history is being taught today does appear not do that, its disheartening. The infrastructure needs to be maintained by people who comprehend it. It takes more innovation than forever naming children after a prophet to be independent enough. Many countries have imported Western contractors and labour to construct, operate and maintain infrastructures. They've been able to achieve this through crude oil, which needed Western equipment to extract and export. For an historically innovative and industrious people, China seems to incredibly reliant on espionage and reverse engineering.

I am not a catholic non am I a Christian, but having descended from some of the first settlers who fled religious persecution it was NOT just the Catholics who founded the western civilization. Jesus did not found the catholic religion it was men. This is why the heretics are able to dismantle the western culture, because it should be all who believe in the greatness of the western civilization that stand together against the demonic forces.

The West grew out of innovation, competition, and broad cultural agreement across the continent. Over my lifetime that culture has degenerated into a toxic politically correct cult. You can't have mass immigration and retain social and cultural cohesion, you can't have enforced multi-cultural equity and inclusion and retain free speech and liberty. I don't think you can have economic security if you export the jobs and expertise out of the country, that only increases dependency. I am all for win-win international cooperation but It seems to me that the West is being undermined by the self-serving globalism and unipolar ambitions of a controlling Western oligarchy who are only interested in protecting their immense wealth, power, and reach.

It’s not “the people” doing this-at least, they’re not the leaders and instigators of it-they don’t even understand that they’re being complicit in their own doom-it’s those at the top -wealth, political power, or whatever power they hold-who are promoting this in their own interests. I suppose they require more acquiescent peons, and not many of those.

Most young people have always sought conflict and challenged authority, but their environment has changed. For most the difficulties of life and being surrounded by adults quickly tempered that, but that's changed. By historical terms, life for most western youth is a paradise; leaving them to look for conflict, exaggerate and invent current conflict and oppression from whole cloth. There is no check on them, as a whole they avoid interaction with others, any responsibility and live in an echo chamber of validation for their wildest claims and excuses. The morally criminal part is the adults that promote and profit from this, those that sell the myths of slavery and racism as currently taught and so much more.

The idea that Western powers came up with idea of abolishing slavery spontaneously on their own is taking credit where its not due. The ideas that led to that came from the cultures discovered in the Americas. It was plains native American culture that gave the world the ideas of "all men being equal" and even the ideas of both federation and (modern) democracy have their origins from Iroquois and Penacook tribes. Many powerful social and individual philosophical concepts were assimilated into European culture through contact with the native Americans. It's just that Europeans never gave credit to where these ideas came from as mostly they were considered hostile or inferior cultures.

The concept of all men being equal was not unknown before encountering Iroquois or Penacook tribes, are you nuts? The new American form of government was based on centuries of British precedent such as Magna Carta, for one thing. And the Iroquois, among many other Indian tribes, practiced slavery. New World indigenous people practiced slavery upon each other long before they ever set eyes upon Europeans. And many tribes-the Cherokee for one-also held black African slaves.

They seemed to choose the lifestyle of just enough on a small rural property. They always seemed to have enough and they both lived till they were 88. The west today seems to have gone more secular and expansionist always wanting more. I believe the true value in the past of western- ness is the ability to accept people of various values. This globalisation push will dilute or kill this ideal.

The West and in particular Britain had Christianity as the guide for its laws & culture. Since WWll leaders and society in general gradually dropped Christianity and parallel to that the West has been in decline until today we see a English king being crowned for the first time since 973 that the ceremony has substantial sharing with other religions that looks like the braking of the 1st & 2nd commandments. When Israel did the same it suffered terribly. I fear for Britain and the West.

Asmi Rann: unfortunately you have a warped view of the British empire. For a start it was the only empire that planned it's demise, it was British Christianity that gave it the ability to spread democracy throughout the world (originally Greek), British Christianity that provided the education for all that it took to much of the world, British Christianity that took Christianity to much of the world giving it schools, hospitals etc. All of which has reduced poverty and disease improving and saving lives far beyond anything we can imagine and while I recognise that it got some things horribly wrong overall the world should thank Britain for its role in the world's modernisation. As for the decline, as I have said planned decline, of the empire causing our current problems it is the rejection of Christianity by the population and today 6-5-23 the Crown of Christianity that is causing the demise of Britain itself, if there were to be revival of Christianity in Britain you would see a very different country as I did in the 1940 & 1950s. The benefits are too many to detail here.

Very sad, and very English, that the 300 years of Spanish empire are omitted. Spain created in America an empire similar to that of Alexander the Great, where all its citizens had equal rights, where huge investment was made (just look at how many unesco sites Spain left in the continent) where a mixed race society was encouraged, where local cultures were respected despite the fact that Spain brought the local population from Stone Age to European Renaissance in one generation. Just 50 years after the conquest of Mexico and Peru there were universities opened for the sons of the local elites that were mostly mixed race with Spanish and sons of Indian caciques joining as well. There were public hospitals and schools and in the 18 century Mexico and Lima were far richer than Madrid. This was truly remarcable and sadly ignored here.

I wonder what India would be like today if it were not for British rule. I doubt it would be the world power that it is. I was listening to a very good Christian man explaining what is going on in Ukraine. I could hardly believe my ears when he took grievance towards Russia back one thousand years! That is like the Welsh and Cornish of today retaining grievance against all our invaders, the Romans, the Norsemen, the Danes, the Angles, the Saxons. That was linked to oppression under Soviet rule. So ingrained is the logic of excusing discord today by presenting resentment and revenge, totally unChristian precepts, as justifying destruction, and bloodshed that we have reverted to the law of the jungle.
