Algaecide worked for me when all else failed. Of course, they do keep flying in, so I have to skim the pool often, but not only on the surface! It's a neverending battle, but algaecide helps to be sure there's no food for them if all else is good. Shocking didn't help me get rid of them at all.
I’m trying to remember but there was a blueish chemical I think called back up that did a couple things, one is help kill algae and two it gets rid of surface tension that the water bugs use to capture or create an air bubble that they use to breath while under water. They either leave or drown. It will foam up when you first add the product but it will dissipate over a few hours. We haven’t had any real problems with water bugs here at our pool but we have a weekly service to maintain it. Pool has waterfalls, slide and in floor cleaning system. Unfortunately there’s no vacuum to waste option on this pool. The skimmers are just a recirculating system at the skimmer from the pool pump return.

We have well water and shocked it but it created brown water due to minerals, we have been working on clearing it up but now theres these bugs you mentioned, how do we kill the bugs/algae if shock treatments cause brown water? Can we use chlorine tablets?
I don’t get these. We live in Florida and have the screen enclosed pool, but we are right by a lake (pool edge is about 15-20’ from the lake). We get a blanket of no-see-ums on the surface of the water mixed with tiny grass particles and dirt that make it through the screen; we live in in an hoa neighborhood and the lawn people refuse to point the grass shooting out away from the pool. I have tried spraying the screen and around the pool with essential oils to keep the tiny bugs out, but it doesn’t help. They are so tiny that they go right through our main pool cleaning net. I literally have to get in the water with the ultra fine net to get everything. There has to be an easier way. I’m spending a good hour hand skimming and cleaning the edge twice a week. Should my skimmer be getting some of this? None of this is getting to the bottom, but I still vacuum often too. Any tips?
Set up an above ground pool in San diego last summer. Today i saw some kind of bug actually swimming under the surface. Thought I was hallucinating. Never seen one before. Had a fun time trying to catch it. Never knew pools came with bugs that swim. Still no clue what it was. Guessing there's more where that one came from 🤨🙄😬
The easiest way to get rid of those nasty critters is to make sure your chemicals are right and get some Dawn dishwashing soap and put it where the bugs are. Works like a charm. I got this info from another pool guy on youtube, the Dawn soap did zero damage to my pool or my pool pump.
Good evening I was wondering how can I get rid of ants by my pool they are walking on the edge like a lot of them I just barely noticed them tonight we always have a pool guy once a week
I used some combat max ant baits pretty heavily along the ants pathways for a few days of activity. When the number of ants drops significantly spread some Diatomaceous Earth or DE across their path in a few places and in a complete circle around the ant nest.. look for bare soil.
I was at a wave pool in Nebraska 2 days ago I got bit on my arm and it was swollen 2 days ago we went home and 2 days later and it was swollen a lot today and I hope if u could maybe identify the bug that bit me
Only ever seen one of these. Cleaned the pool, vacuumed, and shocked it. my question is water skimmers. The ones with 4 long legs that scoot around on the surface. Why do they keep popping up and how do I prevent them from returning?
I had a bunch of the biting water bugs in my pool the day after it was filled with fresh well water. The first day it was fine, but overnight it was invaded.
I just got a new pool that only requires you put 2 gallons of bleach when you fist get it which I did. Its an Ion system so it doesn't require chlorine., I need to test my pool water still but have to wait because I have to let it run throughout the system. So how can I get rid of the back swimmers if I can't shock it?
Home Depot and Lowes have disposable fly attractant catchers. You put them as far away from your pool and any area you don't want flies around, and the flies are attracted away to the catcher. Once they're in, they don't get out. Once full of flies, put up a new one and throw the old one out. They have these for wasps and hornets too. Also, to deter flies from where you don't want them (around your pool), if you have a deck, fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spray it onto the wood of the deck. Doing so deters flies. It's not a perfect solution, but it helps to keep their numbers at bay. The fly traps work wonders. Give 'em a try!
So my pool is alge free..the issue is ..when we want to take a night time swim the bugs seem to be attracted to the lights and the next thing you know there everywhere ontop of the water. Is there a color that you can change the lights for bugs to be less attracted to? New pool owner.
Hello, thank you for yoir video, we have a UV pool and I've seen the mosquitoes larvae, like red worms and kind of like transparent with big heads worms which I think are mlsquitoe larvae too... I have sued the leaf skimmer non stop and have taken like dozens and dozens of them out... I JUST NEED A vacuum because with quarantine now I can't buy one... Will this resolve ly problem? I'm so disgusted of going inside my pool knowing there. Mught be those gross worms inside, 😭
Can you not in-line your pool? Look up what that is. It Uses your pools filter to provide the suction. Another option is a “power vac” but that’s $800.
I’ve been fighting these stupid boatman and backswimmers for 2 years. My problem is the stairs. Algae and dirt just stay behind it and it’s hard to move them because we have it in place with the deck. Luckily the stairs broke on one step this summer so after this season it’s going away and getting something that’s easier to clean behind and under. Not something bulky like what came with our pool.
I HAVE NOT SEEN WATER BUGS SINCE i WAS A KIDS IN THE 70'S... sAME BACK YARD.. NEW POOL AFTER i BOUGHT HOUSE FROM PARENTS. I retired age 46, so I have a lot of time by myself cleaning and keeping pool crystal clear.. Plus, if nobody is in pool, cover is always on.
First year pool people. What can we do about other bugs in the pool we get alot of Beatles is there anything we can do? We keep our levels where they should be.
I've been listening to all of your MoneyLab episodes and wanted to watch the videos you brag about ;) I don't even have a pool but I watched most of the video because it was interesting. Nice job!
I went out this morning there were HUNDREDS of these little black winged bugs floating dead in my pool. My chemicals measure perfect, and I have a PoolRX in my skimmer. Super frustrating.
What about the flying bugs w/wings (look like termites) that have landed by the 100’s in my pool! Thought they’d drown but after skimming them out they don’t die! Got any tips to kill them once removed from water?🤷🏼♂️🤔🙏🏼
O-man I thought there was going to be tips about Yellowjackets. The are all over my pool some hit the water and I guess the are stuck on the surface can’t fly off and if not aware we’ve gotten stung.
Beetles are still a problem. I sprayed Peppermint Oil Water all around the edges and everywhere else around last week. Still beetles. I sprayed again today.
We our literally filling our new pool and they showed up half way through our fill. New pool. New liner. Is there already algae? Or why are they there?!
Thanks for all the great content. I'm a 2nd year pool owner and have referenced your material often and the handbook and course were helpful during my first year. We recently replaced the pump on our salt water in-ground pool system (with DE filter) which ran 24/7 with a programmable variable speed pump which ran 7am-7pm. During my daily skimmer check I found a bunch of little bugs (almost gnat like) swirling in the skimmer. So I kicked the VSP from 75% to 85% and am going to run throughout the night to try to clear them from the system. My question is do you think this is a result of the pump being idle over night for the past 3 nights with no surface water circulation? Or something else? I run a dolphin t35 just about daily (didn't last week while I was away), free chlorine has been around 3.5 with each Sutro reading I've received and the water has been clear the entire time. I just kicked the chlorine generate into superchlorinate to make the water a nightmare for any plant or creature. Thanks for any insight.
We have water bugs in our pool in our pools Blue Book we just catch them and put them in our pond but should we do what you say plus we don't have a vacuum we just have a robot would that work to
I shock the pool after heavy rain to get Rid the algae? I’m about to shock my salt pool here in nc bc of the 3 days of heavy rain on the coast, but there’s always a few bugs after 3 days in the skimmer. The key I believe is rid the pool of algae
I have lots of bugs in my above ground pool. New pool owner please help. My pool is clean and clear but I do live in an agricultural city. I keep getting so many bugs
what can be done to keep bugs out of the water once the lights come on? within a minute of turning on the lights i have over a dozen critters in the water with us... we have a mosquito service and the yard is pest free otherwise
What’s your thoughts? Put up 14x42, Intel. Well water. Hard water. Never had algae . Levels perfect with dip sticks. Keep getting large adults. Any more recommendations. Thanks
Hi, I think the insect I have in my pool is neither of the mentioned. The water is crystal clear. I have a saltwater system with sand pump. The chlorine level is good and even a little high. This insect has similar shape to what mentioned, with the long arms, but a slim body almost as a mosquito. But the main difference is that it does not swim, it dives like a fish! Which makes it more scary. I only see one of them occasionally and I take them out with a net. Out of the water it does not fly, it only manages to jump. Any recommendation of what to do? Thanks.
That’s a backswimmer they swim fast so it looks like they are diving underwater. Fish them out with a net and crush them. If you relocate bugs of the type that hangout in pools they will just return to it even if your pool is kept up meticulously. Only bugs I relocate are bumblebees, honeybees which have gotten stuck looking for a drink and I relocate th5em extremely carefully so as not to get stung. Kill everything else
@@0utcast We have them this year too and I can't figure out why or where they're coming from. We treat for algae weekly and the pool is clear, all chemicals are great. In 4 years of having our pool this is the first year we've dealt with these and they are just nasty.
@KristyStill same here. The ones I saw dive down into the water but also swim. Weird looking bugs with big eyes. I can't determine whether it's a backswimmer or water boat thing. That's why I'm here today. My water is clear and I'm too poor to afford a pool vaccum right now. Today I did skim them out but, I didn't crush them. Well, I did one just to see what would happen but if they get back in, imma crush em all. Tonight, more chlorine!
We had backswimmers like 6 years ago. They were disgusting!! I only had a cheap Walmart pool vac but I had a nice brush. Once I put the shock treatments in with chlorine, they disappeared. We moved that winter, never saw them again. However we just moved into our new house and it's near a huge field so I'm worried they will come back. So I've got a stock pile of chlorine tablets, shock treatments and big bottles of pool chlorine. I come prepared this year 😂
@@laniegirl11 not as small as fleas, but not big either. And, im proud to say that I have a clear, bug free pool now! Alot of work and keeping my levels right, the milkiness is gone, and all is good.
Thank you for your informative video. This is our first year with our fiberglass inground pool. Yesterday I discover this tiny black bugs (tons of them ugh) at the edge of the pool between water and the concrete . I scooped them out and shocked the pool. This morning we have less but still. The water is always crystal clear. Why is that? What should I do? Is ot different on a fiberglass pool?
We have had an Easy-Set above ground pool for several years without any bug problems. This year we put up a metal framed above ground pool with a vinyl liner and all of a sudden we have hundreds of extremely tiny bugs climbing up the support legs and on the edge of the pool. They are actually smaller then a No-see-um. They look like moving wood slivers. They are a tan to brown-black colour and are approx 1mm wide by 3mm long. They seem to be attracted to the water, but die as soon as they hit it. They also die very easily with an indoor fly spray. They were discovered during a heat wave when it was very dry from lack of rain. I live in North-central Alberta, Canada and this is unusual weather for us, especially this close to September. I’ve lived her all my life and have never seen these bugs before! There is no sign of them in the morning, but then it seems like they wait to appear later in the day when the pool is not in direct sunlight. I think that No-see-ums are attracted to these bugs for food. Thankfully they also die as soon as they hit the water; however, some of them have managed to bite us before drowning or flying away. I have no signs of green or black algae. My pump runs 24/7. I did see some pink slime in the hose attached to the pool heater; that pump died and wasn’t running for a couple days. I cleaned out the hoses and put a new pump on with a timer; I also added more algaecide, even though I believe this is likely a bacteria. I have been skimming the top and vacuuming the pool floor daily. I scrubbed the pool walls and floor before shocking it about 36 hours ago. Yesterday it poured, so I wasn’t able to check it. This morning I took the cover off to let the sun on the pool to help decrease the chlorine levels. Again there were no bugs this morning, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t show up again this afternoon. Do anyone have any idea what these little bugs are and how to permanently get rid of them! Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Oooh. Yaaaas! They would terrorize my pool very loud 1st summer. Next year i tried lots of things to kill terrorize them. It slowed down. Maybe from neighboring 🐱 Cat??? They've swam @ same time every 🌙.
whats wrong with water boatmen if they eat algae? That sounds kind of like a free natural algae control to me. How about tadpoles? I had a couple of feet of water in a little lined hole, and the next week it was full of tadpoles, of course I pumped the water from a swamp maybe I sucked up some eggs and algae. It was just a tempory water pit for an outdoor event, but now I dug it deeper with an excavator and bigger so now you could properly swim in the space and put a black 20 x 30 heavy duty vinyl tarp in the hole. It's 5 ish feet deep at the deep end and 3 at the shallow end. the hole is in hard clay, so it holds it's shape pretty well , I pretty much need a pickaxe to loosen the dirt to dig. I just roughed in a 1.5 inch pvc pipe under the bottom of the pit for the main floor drain/suction running up the side to where the pump and filter is going to be, then I'm planning to have it go up into an artificial concrete waterfall and dump back in the pool. eventually I would like to make it even a little bigger and daub and sculpt dyed concrete along the walls and floor to have it look like sandstone bedrock, but i don't have the time or money for that right now. I can't even figure out how to fill it since I don't have a well or any other type of water service, or even power for that matter, which means i'll need to use my generator to run my pump when I'm around on weekends. it wont run 8 hours / day that's for sure, maybe some tadpoles and waterboatmen along with the floating chlorinator will keep it good enough. I don't mind swimming in pond water after all. The "pool" may be a little different, but I wouldn't have it any other way. There's nothing special with your standard $50,000 pool except the years of your life your going to suffer working some miserable job that you hate just to pay for it lol.
I am hoping someone can identify the scariest water bug I have seen. I live in the Phoenix metro area. A few years ago I was sweeping the pool. I was near the stairs and when I looked down I was surprised to see what I had initially thought was a frog hanging on the was about a foot below the water line. I got down to get a better look and planned on removing to frog from pool. As I was reaching to grab it I realized it wasn’t a cute froggie but a evil looking bug. It was greenish, 3 to 4 inches long and looked like it had pinchers and possibly a stinger type tail. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Sounds like a giant water bug. They can look like green tree frogs until you get close enough. Has something that looks like a spike at the rear and two legs on the front end that look like pincers. Can also grow to a fairly large size. It uses the front legs to grab a hold of prey and pull it onto a single needle like rostrum, that protrudes from the head. The bite from which is extraordinarily painful. They are also known to feign death like an opossum, so don't pick one up assuming so
fyrye thanks for your answer. You described it perfectly. I’m sure glad I focused in before grabbing it. That would have done for my pool time what Jaws did for my ocean swimming! Thanks again
I have seen two of these bugs in my pool this week, not sure exactly which one it is. The thing is, my water is crystal clear! Could this be a fluke or do you think this is a real problem? I’m freaking out!

@@edrodriguez323 I had one land on me yesterday... I smacked him before he could sting me. And I dont know. Maybe spray or plant a ton of lemon grass around your area. We about lost our daughter to a family bug spray with no deet. So I look for alternative ways to get rid of bugs I dont like.
Well none of these bugs are anything like I saw swimming in my pool one night. Larger or longer than a tadpoles. White with eyes and maybe 2 inches long. Larva are tiny & frog tadpoles have a different shape. Never seen in my life in a pool.

You pour it in to the pool ? Or the filter?

How do I get rid of biting fly ant type bugs?
Bite them back.
I was at a wave pool in Nebraska 2 days ago I got bit on my arm and it was swollen 2 days ago we went home and 2 days later and it was swollen a lot today and I hope if u could maybe identify the bug that bit me
Hi,
I have a 24ft above ground round pool with the Frog Leal System. Can I use Chlorine Shock?
What about the nasty horsefly? Do you have a suggestion on how to get rid of those?
Only ever seen one of these. Cleaned the pool, vacuumed, and shocked it. my question is water skimmers. The ones with 4 long legs that scoot around on the surface. Why do they keep popping up and how do I prevent them from returning?
I had a bunch of the biting water bugs in my pool the day after it was filled with fresh well water. The first day it was fine, but overnight it was invaded.
What did u do to get rid of then
@@blugraham2195 scooped out what I could catch with a screen.
I just got a new pool that only requires you put 2 gallons of bleach when you fist get it which I did. Its an Ion system so it doesn't require chlorine., I need to test my pool water still but have to wait because I have to let it run throughout the system. So how can I get rid of the back swimmers if I can't shock it?
how do you get rid of flies around the pool?
Yellow, like the bug light color
Do NOT use blue light! It attracts bugs!!! Found out the hard way. Yellow bug light color is good advice.
We got a nest of mosquitoes in our pool!! Is it because my cover for some reason has breather holes or hasn't been used?
I HAVE NOT SEEN WATER BUGS SINCE i WAS A KIDS IN THE 70'S... sAME BACK YARD.. NEW POOL AFTER i BOUGHT HOUSE FROM PARENTS. I retired age 46, so I have a lot of time by myself cleaning and keeping pool crystal clear.. Plus, if nobody is in pool, cover is always on.

Is a saltwater pool different in regards to the bugs?
O-man I thought there was going to be tips about Yellowjackets. The are all over my pool some hit the water and I guess the are stuck on the surface can’t fly off and if not aware we’ve gotten stung.
Beetles are still a problem. I sprayed Peppermint Oil Water all around the edges and everywhere else around last week. Still beetles. I sprayed again today.
*What are the tiny fast moving worms in our pool!!!???? HELP!!!!!*
I had those in my bathing suit I’m not scared of bug but on that situation i let out major scream
We have water bugs in our pool in our pools Blue Book we just catch them and put them in our pond but should we do what you say plus we don't have a vacuum we just have a robot would that work to

quart of muriatic acid to bring hardness down...THEN shock. Chlorine won't work if water is too hard.
We have thrips around and in our pool how do we get rid of these!?!
Bro the pool in my neighborhood has never been cleaned or open. You have just taught me why I haven't been bitten by a mosquito here.😮
Hi,
I think the insect I have in my pool is neither of the mentioned.
Thanks.
I have the same thing and really want to know what the hell it is so I can get rid of it because they bite
@@mandyabernathy6220 I was lucky enough not to feel the bite. Maybe because I find them before I get to the pool. Does it hurt?
I come prepared this year 😂
We just got our first pool and we had bugs day 2 before we even got to swim in it
Thanks for your vids!!
Is that for a saltwater pool and a chlorine pool or what you never did say
A saltwater pool is a chlorine pool.
We keep having boatman bugs even though there is no alege. They fly in but don't fly away.
Same here! Our pool is crystal clear, gets brushed and shocked weekly, levels are good, and still water bugs galore 😩
When this happens to me i (usually once a season) i double shock my pool and they all die.
What about a mineral water pool that uses non chlorinated shock? Any tips to get rid of bugs?
I have dealt with bugs before.... They are pretty crazy.
I've been getting a lot of Buffalo flies this yr for some reason. What can I do to get rid of those?
What region of the country can we find these bugs? I'm in NC, but I haven't seen these bugs yet.
We got them in the SouthWest (desert areas) Albuquerque, Tombstone, etc. Never seen them in Florida or Southern California.
I move water bugs to our bird baths (made from goat troughs with solar fountains)... they keep the mosquito larvae out. :)
What about the other bug? Beetle like, they swim deep black in color.
Big or little? We have some tiny little things. I thought they were fleas but they don't bite.
Fiber glass pools can not be brushed either with steel bristles FYI
What about tiny wasps? And black hornets? They bit and they are always in my pool. Please help

Lacresha Johnson bro you good
If their frogs, eat them....
whats wrong with water boatmen if they eat algae?
I was near the stairs and when I looked down I was surprised to see what I had initially thought was a frog hanging on the was about a foot
below the water line.
Sounds like a giant water bug. They are nasty and their bite is quite painful. I just had one in my pool today. Gross.
I check all around the pool when I get in. I’m so glad I didn’t grab it. I thought it was a frog
