In this video, I look at the boots that I have owned over the years and give a little information on each pair and how I, as fairly novice hiker, have found each boot. Most of my hiking has been on distinct hiking trails or in places such as Dartmoor. I have walked many miles of the South West Coast Path and have ventured up into many mountains too, so I have put these various boots through their paces. I started as a hiking beginner with no real clue what boots I needed, and was mainly purchasing the best budget hiking boots that I could.
My reviews of each boot are really from my experiences only and are rated on price, durability, grip and ankle support, and I discuss the various sole and Gortex technologies that each brand has to offer. I apologise now for the lack of technical expertise in this video. I haven't had much (in fact have had no) experience with crampons or things like that so I cannot help with any questions related to which of my boots would be best for crampons, although at a guess I would probably say the Meindl's.

Don't praise him too much, he actually paid for a pair of Hi-Tec boots.... realised how bad they were....and then brought an equally bad (if not worse/more "special" looking) pair of boots and wound up admitting that that was a bad choice too. I think you're massively over estimating this guy pal I gotta be honest.

My Meindl Vakuum Ultra have been sensational. They’re incredibly comfortable, and durable (I’ve worn mine virtually everyday for 3 years and they are almost out of outer sole). I’ve worn them in-32c in Russia, and +46c in Australia, and wearing merino socks my feet have never felt hot or cold. I love them.

Cannot say enough about my Meindl boots. Had them many years and wore them out. Great value. For a cheaper alternative the Hi-tech's are good for the price.
Meindl all the way. Have the IslandPRO since 2002!!! The greatest thing about these is, that you can send your shoes to Meindl or to an extern company to exchange the main sole, let them renew all that can be and you can use them again as new, since the leather is such a quality, that it will outlast you. Had my first sole exchanged in 2012 and am planning to do this again in 2022 :)

Been wearing a pair of Scarpa Vortex GTX walking shoes this year. Absolute gems!
Had the Berghaus Hillmaster 2 for just under 3 years and they were good to begin with. I regularly waxed them. Under 3 years of Dartmoor stomping and they began to leak heavily. And I did roll my ankles in them a lot. But, thankfully no injuries. They are heavy and not treat for long day walks.
Really great video. Thank you. I bought the Columbia's as they fit my budget. The grip for my hiking needs which only involve 20-40 foot sheer drops is excellent. Thank you

My personal choice are the Altberg Mallerstang , used to be a Scarpa fan but the Altbergs far more comfortable, varying width fittings so you get proper fit and support, 2.7mm thick leather uppers, goretex inner, mine get used every day through winter walking my springer through mud, water, over rocks, long hikes at weekends, never let me down in over two years and still in excellent condition AND they are a Yorkshire company.
I went for the altra lone peak 4 waterproof mids, got to say I love the wide toe box and the zero drop is a absolute pleasure to walk with.
I'm having palpitations here looking at the state of your leather boots! A great boot to try are the Altberg Warrior's or the issue boot which is almost the same, the Altberg defender. You can pick them up in grade 1 condition on Ebay for £35 and they are the best bit of kit I've ever purchased.
Have been hiking since the early 60’s and have gone through boots too numerous to mention. Last spring bought a pair of Salomon Quest 4D boots to walk the West Highland Way, and like you Trevor they have been the best boots I have ever used. Not one blister in nearly 700 miles of use and dry feet all the time.

I'm wearing Altberg Kisdon G-Fit boots. Went for these as I knew I needed wide boots and they fit my feet great. They don't squash my little toes at all and they've made me realise how I've been squeezing my feet into my trainers all my life. Ordered online and ordered my usual shoe size. So far they have been really good. I've had them about 2 months now, worn everyday, and I haven't found any faults with them. They are a stiff soled boot but you soon get used to them. They are comfortable to wear and I've only had one small blister on the front of my left foot whilst wearing them in. They're like having 4WD feet. The Vibram sole looks as if it's hard-wearing so should last well. The full rand is good and it comes high over the toe. Lace locks are good to have. Treated with a can of Leder-bok before wearing. Probably going to be overkill for the summer but I'm on the hunt for something else for the warmer seasons. These are on the expensive side but the build quality is solid and these are one of the few boots available to have a Sympatex waterproof lining. Hasn't rained much since I've had these boots though but it has been plenty muddy still with the ground starting to dry out a bit now.
You're right about ankles. The ankle joint is anatomically designed for negogiating uneven ground so wearing a tight ankle boot is defying evolution! Like you I wonder whether you need to be conscious while walking to take care especially when tired. The other aspect is to be really careful when carrying a heavy pack and try and keep it as light as possible to avoid injury. Great videos...

Meindl is my favorite brand. Although they are expensive they last a very long time. And they fit very well if you have wide feet like me.
I think the Meindls you showed are type B hiking boots and are usually heavier in weight than A/B type of boots.

Very useful! Have only been hiking about 12 months (hills and mountains). Got my first pair of Berghaus boots from a high street store, but found them heavy and slippery which really took my surprise - that severely knocked my confidence on rocky mountains! I have done plenty of running in trainers over the years and some winter xc too (in salomon cross) so enjoy being lightfooted and nimble. Keen to try Salomon walking boots as I think they might offer the grip whilst being less clumpy. Berghaus positives, these kept my feet dry on the wettest, boggy-est hikes, but so rigid and clumpy (for this novice!) I got a pair of Hi Techs online to see me through spring and summer, but have made a note of the Salomons so I can invest at the end of the summer. Here's to getting back on those hills soon! 😁
Hopefully, the Salomon's will be more suited fr you, the larger boots can feel cumbersome especially if you're used to lighter footware. Thanks for watching!
Each to their own, meindl Bhutan for me mostly winter time, meindl boots just fit me perfectly. Can't get on with Solomon, never get the right fit. Summer boots are meindl and inov8 345 gtx, definitely run in them. Great review 👍

As far as shoes go I have a pair of Merrell Chameleon that I love so much. Had them for many, many years and they fit like a glove especially with a gel insole.
My favourite so far is the Scarpa Ranger 2, just bought a second pair- very sturdy and waterproof. Maybe a bit heavy but so solid and comfy, which is a good combo.
Scarps boots were my go too in the 90s! Love them!
Different manufacturers make different shoe sizes, some are bigger and some are smaller, even though they are marked up the same, and width fittings. If you can afford it, I would recommend going to a good outdoors shop where they can measure your feet so that you get a correctly fitted pair of shoes/boots. They will have lots of experience and can advise you on which pair will suit your needs. I have had two great pairs of Scarpa boots in the past. My current pair are Zambalan. All excellent boots.
I ended up with a pair of those Salomon ultras because they offer a wide fit and my Altberg Tetheras were a bit on the heavy side for long walks, albeit a very comfortable fit and absolutely bomb proof build quality. Although I paid about £120 for those Salomon’s, they do look quite “cheap” but are so light and comfortable, it’s amazing how much difference they make when carrying 30-40lbs on your back..
Yes, I know what you mean - when I got mine I didn't think that they would be water proof at all, but they really were amazing. And having a lighter boot really helps over longer distances too. Thanks for watching!
I have been wearing my Meindl Bhutan's since at least 2007 and they're still going strong, although I didn't walk for a few years after my husband died. We've walked in Chamonix, Switzerland, Austria and the Dolomites, also in the Lakes, a lot! Wales and Scotland.
Now I've started up again I pulled them out and there is still plenty of wear in them. However, I now find them a bit inflexible and heavy. I'm looking to replace with Salomons.
I'm looking for great grip on cold wet mossy granite around Mt. Washington NH USA. I also pay attention to motorcycle tires and grip is everything for many of us, we don't want the longest life, we don't get fooled by tread patterns or side wall lettering, we realize that 10 year old rubber grip is going south, we realize that the rubber recipe has the biggest effect, not often the "look of the lugs." Slicks for tracks are the top of the grip heap and it's all about rubber compound that hiking boot people don't talk about( yet?). Rock climbing shoes do get into rubber compound information. I'm glad you spoke of grip at 3:09 and 7:42
I love my Meindl boots, most comfortable boots I've had, pricey but worth it.

@@SummitOrNothing I've been through two pairs of the GTX, both instances the glue let go within two months. And no, I did not dry them too quickly or anything like that which Meindl tried to accuse me of (yes, accuse. They kept hammering on about it, how it must have been my fault bla bla). Luckily they fell under warranty, but after the second pair I got my money back and looked elsewhere. Having it happen twice makes me think there's a fault in the manufacturing process. They said they would look into it, take a look at the two pairs and why they (the glue) failed and get back to me. I sadly haven't heard a peep, this was three months ago.
You probs let them dry too quickly mate. You live and learn.
Finding a pair of boots that suit is very much a personal journey. I always said I would never wear anything but Scarpas having had several pairs that were excellent. Then I bought a pair of Lowa Mountain GTX and thought they were the ‘dogs nads’...never out of them...until I saw a pair of Mammut Trovat GTX that had been reduced at GoOutdoors (didn’t need them...just liked the bargain!😊)....bought them...justified it to the wife (just) and I seriously love them. I’ve walked miles & miles in them...never a blister or hot spot...never got my feet wet...heavy?...yep...but I’m fine with that so long as I know I don’t have to worry about wet feet when I’m still miles from anywhere. I’ve never tried Meindls though and probably never will as I’ve got enough pairs to be going on with for now. Soon be back on the Moor eh?!!👍🏻 P.S I had a friend that could not get on with those Salamons....bothered his Achilles’ tendons ...ended up cutting them out to finish the Two Moors way (the boot,not the tendons!😊)...binned them after....Horses for Courses as they say😊
Some interesting feedback there, Pennywise and you're quite right. What one person finds comfortable another may not. I'll have to look into the Mammut's, but I reckon I will be ok for a while though, eh? Haha! Funnily enough, I have never had a blister full stop, so I never even consider to mention which shoes may or may not cause blisters. Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm sure they will relax the curfew at some point soon, I will be up in the moor and out on the coast camping every chance I get when they do!
I have a similar pair of Hi-Tec boots - V-Lite Peak. Love them. Very light, very comfortable very water resistant. The tread’s worn down now but I still wear them just for general walking. Not pretty, but a great and reasonably priced boot. Disclaimer - I don’t do Scafell Pike or anything; just walk around the North Downs.
Those hi-tec boots have been amazing. I wore them for about a year, and since I have acquired the other boots I have passed them onto my dad who does between 4-8 miles most days. They are still going strong, still waterproof and still comfortable. For the money possibly the best of the bunch.
I have a pair of Berghaus Hillwalkers and they are like wearing slippers. SO comfy, but I've had problems with leaking from time to time. If the leather gets saturated after a walk, then you use it again the next day in the wet, the water does come in. Only after a while but it does come in. I've never had anything yet that's been 100% leak proof.
I bought a pair of lowa renegade in a sale ,i have walked all over snowdonia up hill and down dale. Rode my motorbike in all weathers in them and walked on beaches, they fit really well and are comfotable which is more important for going any distance great reveiw

im on my second pair of columbia trail shoes my last pair where non leather my current pair leather i rate them nice and comfy and waterproof

Nice video - I have had a pair of Meindle Bhutan for many many years and have hiked many a mile in them from hill to coast, but the time came when I needed to replace them and so after watching many youtubes, I chose the Salomon Ultra 3 Mid GTX. Wow what a boot, or so I thought! I've had the boots for just coming up for a year and they are really comfortable. I haven't been able to get out that many times so the boot has hardly any miles on it. Just over a week ago, I went out for a 8 mile walk (In a few minutes from my house I can be in the countryside), it had been raining but wasn't that wet. When I returned the inside of my boot was wet and so too were my socks. I thought that the boots may need to be re-water-proofed so after cleaning them I sprayed them with Nikwax and allowed them to dry. Two days ago I went out for another walk (around 12 miles on my own). Light rain in the morning followed by sunshine in the afternoon. When I returned home, the inside of my boots were wet through so too were my socks and feet. The boots are now being sent back to the retailer who will send them to the manufacturer. I have since read many reviews of people all suffering from the same problem with this boot, they leak! I'm really hoping that it is a faulty boot as they are great in the dry, but if this next boot fails I'll be going back to my trusty Bhutan. Yes they are heavier, but I'd rather have a heavy dry boot than a light wet one.

I had similar issues in Scotland and NE England, feet freeze in - temperatures too, but they are great for the mild south west

Salomon 4d are very comfortable but mine disintegrated quicker than I’d expect. I now use Bestard for hiking and hunting in NZ Southern Alps.

I have those Salomon boots and they just weren’t solid enough for my liking. I prefer the ankle support and soles to be stiffer. They also didn’t perform very well in the wet clay-like soil we have around here, and I slipped a couple times before finally deciding to try something else. I’m currently wearing Trekker Lite III boots by Aku and finding them to be both comfortable and sturdy.
My Salomons have just failed after 4 years of heavy use (loved them, no issues). Wanted a cheaper alternative as they are quite pricey, but from videos like this I'm coming to the conclusion that you get what you pay for!

Four years is good innings. My first pair of boots got me through a year, the sole fell off on Scafell Pike. I do love my samolmons
Salomons are made of plastic, they're very very comfortable but they don't last very long. Mine fell apart after less then 1 year

I remember all to well, The time I started hiking back in the day 1960's your choice of footwear was limited to just 5 manufacturers in the UK Blacks, Hawkins,ect, xArmy stores where second hand boots (heavy) and other camping items where purchased, In total contrast to today!! To much choice to much money to little time🤔👍🇬🇧

I recomend Altberg boots as they can be resolved in Altberg factory in North England .
Started off with Karrimor, many many years ago but have stayed faithful to Scarpa boots for the last 15 years or so...Can't beat them.

Same here. Huge Scarpa fan. I've hiked with them in Scotland, Canada, Nordic countries and Iceland and I absolutely love their support. They've such a great range too. I'm currently rocking Vortexes, Marmoladas & Zodiac Tech's. I like Columbia too (great value) and the missus swears by Salomon. My brother has size 15.5 feet and he wears Meindl Islands. I think they're special order in that size and he wants durability so he doesn't have to replace his shoes often.

Have you considered a video on cleaning products? You could practise as you went along. Alternatively Hannah from Trekitt does a good UA-cam video on cleaning footwear.
i have the solomon QUEST 4D 3 GTX i like but are so slippy on wet rocks, are these you have ok? i am looking to replace my boots now
Hi Trev, I only own one pair of boots and a pair of shoes/trainers. As you say they can be expensive. My boots are the Salomon 4D 3 GTX. Excellent boots, they keep your feet bone dry and exceptionally comfortable. They tackled deep snow on snowdon Summit and heavy rain and floods.. Both times my feet were warm and dry.. Couldn't recommend Salomon boots enough. They retailed £162. Thanks to go outdoors price match plus 10% I got them for £107 👍 the shoes on the other hand, I went for a "fashion" brand. Adidas Terrex Swift 2 Gore-Tex. £120 reduced to £84 in Blacks. Great fashion shoe but awful hiking.. Blisters everytime I tried to go on a decent walk.. 👎. I've been offline for a while, great to be back and catch up on your videos.. 👍👍👍. Cheers, Dave.

I would definitely go for a boot that dosen't have flourcarbons in them, like Gore-Tex or any other harmfull material for the environment. For example Lundhags or L.L. Bean (some with Gore-Tex though) have great boots that will last a lifetime.
I bought a pair of columbia conspiracy v when showed you yours off for the coast walk. That spurred me on and Their my first hiking shoe and I think their great , I also use them everyday for work and through the winter , as they are wind and waterproof. I'm never going back to boots unless perhaps winter time and probably dartmoor 🤣

Hi, on the saloman's did you go up a half size or a full size.? I found mine very tight, great boot though. Thinking of getting another pair might go up a full size this time.
Funnily enough, no, I didn't - and they were fine - but have just bought myself a new pair of the solomon shoes and yes - they are very tight despite being the same size.
My latest boots are Meindl and I agree not the lightest but comfortable. I had a pair of Karrimor last year and dumped them after only 2 hikes because they wrecked my left Achilles. Never had any Solomon boots but reviews seem very good.

Been wearing Grisport gamekeeper for last couple o months,I must say they are outstanding,worn through some very rainy wet mornings,back with dry feet 👍🏻good 20 25 mile tabs

I've had several pairs of Salomon boots/shoes over the last 5 years or so and although I really liked the first pair I bought (Quest 4D 2 GTX) it seems that the quality has dropped with each pair I've had. I wear them daily as I walk to/from work and they last about 9-10 months before the sole has worn through, so I get maybe 800-1000 miles use which seems ok? Been planning to go back to Berghaus again for my next pair but maybe I'll have a look at Meindl after this vid.

Bro are these British brands? I’ve not heard of them. I know what Vibram is for American Leather boots but these look great for hiking.
I’m on my 3rd pair of Bhutan’s and to be honest I’ve never had any real issues with them,if my life depended on it,these would be on my feet.The boot I had before these were a pair of Salomon 4d gtx if I remember right and the soles started coming off at around 8mth old, but they were past there best by then anyway, but they were the comfiest boots I’ve ever had on my feet,great review and thanks for posting
I think for harsher conditions the Bhutand would come with me, but that being said I took the Soloman into the carpatheans and they were fantastic as I think I mentioned in the video. In the past 18 months I have worn the solomans more than any other boot. So far and still so good. But that being said, they are also the boot that most comments complain about! Strange!

Hi, are Berghaus Hillmaster II compatible with C1 crampons (are they stiff enough in the sole)?
I wear Inov-8 TerraUltras as I also run. Inov-8 do a boot variant of their Roclite shoe which looks good but is pretty expensive...
I am interested in doing the Hebridean way, it 150 miles:
40% open moorland
40% road/ rock path
20% machair/ sand
Is there even a type of boot/ shoe that could do all of the offroading but also be comfortable for roads,
Or is it best to bring a separate pair of trainers for the road and at camp?

I’ve got such week ankles that I always purchased boots for the support. Then I read an article that pretty much stated that unless you have exceptionally stiff uppers you are not really going to benefit and a shoe may offer as much protection. The thing is with a heavy boot my feet and ankles tired and I would roll my ankles loads especially towards the end of a long day. I now wear Zamberlan shoes and roll my ankles significantly less. Making the change from boots to shoes was a revelation.

I now when I first mentioned picking up some shoes, a lot of people seemed horrified that I would even consider it and I had a barrage of comments saying hiking boots all the way, but I haven't looked back since I bought the shoes. Hanwag Tatra worth every penny ! They are ready to go straight out of the box and are the best boots I have owned.
Absolutely love Hanwag’s. Super comfortable, waterproof and breathable . Also owned a great pair of Miendals which I used for winter climbing and in the Alps.
@@SummitOrNothing Hanwag Tatra GTX are excellent, Bavarian company. Got a pair 12 years old, resoled like new. Variety of widths and with or without Gortex. Plenty of colour choices too. My wife and I have two pairs each now. I read of one customer that had had his resoled 20 times!
i happen to be lucky to find a pair of solomon boots in a charity shop fo £20 in very good condition and my exact size 10.5.ive now had them for 5years and 600 miles of hiking and still in very good condition,THE BEST HIKING BOOTS EVER TO COVER MY FEET.

Haha... sorry about that. I see a lot of people complaining about the Salomons but I really rate them. So much so that I have just picked up a pair of their trainers to replace my columbias too.
I have had 6 pairs of the Salomon 3d now. Fantastic boots. They last me about 6 months and done. Dont have to buy insoles for them. Halfway decent. Goretex wears out at about the same time boots start to stretch out.
I agree with the heaviness of the Meindl Bhutan. It's praised all over the internet but at 1,6kg per pair, they are really, really heavy for long walks.
This combined with the extremely stiff soles really stops you from being quick and nimble while walking over those loose rocks in the mountains.
Has the Bhutans for 2 months before they started falling apart. !!

If your legs are still green it might be good to start your season with more support. But if you already have the ankle strength (including you are already used to your pack weight and terrain) then a low top might be better.

I have the scarpa terra like your mate Nath brilliant boot and comfortable, just wish they had the rubber rand for going over shale. I have since bought altberg kidson same as nordkapp just different fitting size excellent boot will probly stick with the altbergs .

I'm not sure of the terrain bit yea,I probably would. They got me through the Carpathians in winter and just saw me walk across the whole of Dartmoor. I find a lighter boot better for long hikes.
Meindl (and others) are so f-ing heavy though. I use trail runners these days and have done even on Winter Munros. The weight saving means a lot on the way back and I've never had problems with ankle support, even on boulder fields. Heavy boots make you clumsy, when you can feel more you are more careful about foot placement. The only time I wear boots is in full Winter conditions where a crampon is required, then I'll use 4 season mountain boots. Cheers!

Out of all the boots you have mention I have only the Salomon Quest 4d 3 GTX, indeed they are good boots but a bit pricey if you don't mind me saying I also have some Vasque, Keen, Eddie Bauer, Merrell ( 3 pairs), Asolo (got rid of those in a week), Danner (got rid of those the next day),Hoka One One (love them). So many choices you just don't know which one to pick, of course everyone wants to put their two cents in, but when it comes to shoes, sandals and boots no one can pick a pair for you, we each have different level of sensibility and tolerance to pain and if there is one thing I learned feet need tender love and care, so don't go cheap when you buy boots but also don't go crazy, listen to seller they usually know what they are talking about. Do some test in the store with you knew boots, shoes, sandals, listen to your feet..that's all I'm saying. Happy trails to you, thumbs up very good video indeed,

I always avoided Salomon because I thought they were for fell running cloth/nylon/plastic shoes arent much good in the highlands or Cheviots in winter but they are fine for the easier terrain in Dartmoor exmoor and Cornwall and way better suited to the hot damp weather here compared to the freezing snowy northern mountains. The SW is a beautiful part of the country to hike!
When we took our snowy hike in the Romanian Carpatheans my solomans performed solidly. In fact I was the only one not having to hang my socks by the fire to dry.

Mostly wear my hanwag grunten 2020 ,, my meindl Burma pro soles started to peel off after 8 years of not hard use but use ..
They been sorted free of charge from local timpsons.. la sportiva gtx are good boots too .. everyone will feel different upon changing insoles ..
Find your right insoles 1st then match em up with the right boots ..

I've got real wide feet and the pair that keeps coming up is the Salomon Ultra 3 mids. I did have the Merrell GTX moab mids but after a couple of years the goretex has given way somewhere and they just let water in. Apparently a lot of people had the same issue.. shame. Go Outdoors was out of stock of the Salomons which in itself seemed like they were a popular choice.
Go Outdoors seem to be out of most stock these days... Bit yeah, I have a wider foot too and I must say that I love my Solomon's. That being said, I have heard people say they have had bad experiences with them too... I rate mine though.

I think get yourself a pair of reasonably prices boots to start, but it all depends on terrain and conditions as to which type you go for.
Those Meindls are good, a hiking buddy used to wear them. I need a new pair really, I wear an old pair of Scarpa Delta GTX, but after years of wear in all weathers the sole is worn and the leather cracked.

scarpa 2 pairs lowa 3 pairs meindl 3 pairs hanwag 4 pairs a dollop of others , i do heavy pack long range backpacking and need high tough thick soled boots , usually living in boots for a month , then wearing them untill they fail , usually 6-7 months for lowa combats , where they last normal folk 3-5 years . lightweight is ok for summer froliking
Footwear is, I find, an endless topic. After years of hiking my feet have stretched out so that I need big and very wide shoes or boots. Meindl have an especially broad line of shoes (ranging from light hikers up to ankle-high bc boots) called 'comfort fit'. Altras are also very wide in the toebox, but they have no 'stack' under the heels, which makes for a different gait than usual (faster shorter strides, less leg stretching). Further it's hard to find broad versions of shoes in the shops in Europe, the US has a much wider (..) choice.

I feel like altras are designed for forefoot strike, where you don't need that much heel protection.
Considerations for me include how quickly they dry and also how quick they wear out, I wear the soles out very quickly for some reason, so reluctant to spend 200 quid, when I know they wont last a year, and its not as if I am walking every weekend in them, slippery soles a nightmare, I've binned a few pairs because of that, also how cool or hot they get. For normal walking, then shoes, only if going somewhere really uneven or wet do I wear boots and my ankles are not good, dislocated my right once, trekking poles really help with stability in that respect.

i binned my karrimors, like wearing ice skates on wet rock.
had a pair of alt berg defenders off ebay and they were no better, they went straight back on ebay.
ended up with Haix, the britsh army ones, and they are great, they are big boots but really comfy to wear even on long hikes. you can get then on ebay at really good prices.
I used mine in aviemore, Ben Nevis , walked the west highland way and Hadrian’s wall in a pair of super cheap Karrimor and even in snow that had melted and refrozen and powder snow fell on top the soles had excellent grip. They performed better than north face or berghaus. I’m guessing it’s a very individual choice of which boot suits your height, weight, how you walk, I have high insteps and very wide feet for a woman as I never wore heels or pointy shoes and the so called best and most expensive hiking boots are way too narrow. My Columbia boots are very trainer like but even though I bought a half size bigger than I need and ordered wide they were crushing my toes. Berghaus hardly bend and although brilliantly waterproof were way to narrow and my arches were not supported and the top of my foot was jammed up against the top of the boot. In the 80s berghaus were extremely comfortable, I’m not sure why the quality has dropped since then, the trendy boots with the tree logo won’t go on my feet, even 3 sizes bigger, .
However my friends are all surprised at my love of karrimor as they are too wide and too roomy for all of my hiking buddies. I wish more women’s hiking boots were made for wide feet , the length seems to have been shortened too, I was a 5 and a half until 2020 now Almost all shoes as well as hiking boots are too short and too narrow.
Have companies changed how they size boots? I’m sure my feet haven’t shrank as my old size 38.5 boots fit fine. Just returning 3 pairs of hiking boots in size 38.5, 39 and a size 40 too!
I miss going to the berghaus shop on dean street in Newcastle and trying all the boots till I found a comfy pair. Plymouth only has a few shops, not even as many as Eldon square. I do miss Newcastle. Amazon is not the same but we only have 2 generic outdoor activities shops here and one hiking shop.
I agree, since I moved to Plymouth I use almost everything from army and navy stores. Much better quality and brilliant value!
Altberg boots, full stop. Tabbing boots for Summer/warm weather; Aqua Warrior for Winter/wet weather.

This is a really good video. Have to disagree about the Salomons. I have had 5, yes 5 boots replaced under warranty because they fail after 6-8 months either leaking or simply start falling apart.
Best boots I owned were Hi-Tecs but moved to what I thought were better brands.
I am done with fabric boots. There is a train of thought that you'd be better off with a pair of trail shoes and some sealskinz socks!
A lot of people are saying the same as you about the Solomons, which surprises me. I have had them for about a year and a half now and have put them through their paces, they are still holding up. Good idea about the seal skin socks and trail shoes - definitely prefer a lighter boot for long distance hiking, so that may be a good option. Cheers for watching!
I tried the Sealskinz and vented low tops trick in the lakes the other week during Storm Ellen after my Merrell GTX failed spectacularly - brand new Sealskinz, lasted about half an hour before my feet were absolutely saturated. Had long waterproof trousers on too so nothing dripping down my legs into the tops. The only saving grace was the merino wool kept my wet feet warm all day. But yeah, it's sad to hear the Salomons have issues. Every "breathable" waterproof thing I own is shite when faced with a whole day of bad weather. I'm half tempted to sod it all off and just get a pair of German Para boots.

Excellent review. Are the Salomons wide fitting? I have a pair of Scarpa Mustang boots that I used for the C2C in 2014 and for the WHW in 2019. However, they are a bit tight now (albeit still in good condition). A friend told me that as you age your feet get bigger! I decided to get a pair of Merrell MOAB 2 Mid Goretex boots (they are wide fitting) specifically for the Great Glen Way at the end of May 2020 but that got cancelled due to coronavirus so have yet to use them in anger! If the lockdown goes on much longer I'll probably end up walking the dog in them! Keep smiling...and healthy. Cheers. Ken

You can eliminate 50% of the choices by taking the insole out and putting your foot on the insole. You'll find roughly 50% of the time your toes match the insole shape very nice and evenly, the other 50% you'll see that no matter what size boot you go for, that particular brand will never be a good fit. Some brands have straight toe boxes, some gently curve, some are narrow and pointy, there will always be some brands you will never feel comfortable in. That's my first step in choosing a boot
Hanwag Tatra II, they make them in 3 different fits. I have done a 3 month research, trying to find the best versitile all around hiking boot, that can work on trekking and or hiking, not too heavy, not too light.. Hanwag Tatra II, then Meindl Bhutan for longivity. if durability is not a consern and your feel are normal or thin.then Salomon is the best Honorable mentions: Danner,Zamberlan, AKU, La sportiva (closer to Salomon style), Lowa, Asolo, Columbia, Merrel or Keen if on a budget.

Good especially if ona budget. Columbia, makes some good shoes and boots. The best quality brands come from Italy, then USA and Germany. I thought that Saolomon was US made, but I read that they are made in China. Wierd, because they make some of the best hiking boots out there!

I do wax my boots. To be honest the leather boots hadn't been used for a fair old while, as I had hung them up over the winter. I could clean them more than I do though, I reckon.
why would he adoringly love boots that cannot be re-soled? Shoes like these are meant to be abused and his aren't even that dirty. The one leather one of somewhat better quality (that may be worth taking care of) was also in almost-new shape. The other shoes are disposable.... at least he actually goes outdoors, even in a limited country like the UK, respect

I have those Salomon ones plus a few other boots from them. But I wear Danner boots all day everyday for work.

Lowa Renegade are good, but they don't last and they could have a bit better cushoning. That's my experience. Salomons are great, but come apart really soon. Danner are great of course. Hanwag, Meindl, Zamberlan , Aku , Asolo are some of my favorites

If you want a more classic leather boot, go with Asolo Thyrus GV . If you want synthetic materials and a boot wtih a bit more support for backpacking , then the Asolo Greenwood GV, is the best they make. Don't be fooled by the looks, they compete with the top brands. Salomon for example are made in China and Asolo are made in Europe... I can tell you, which boots are the best you can get, for the money.How much money are you going to spend and how is your feet? Normal , narrow or wide?
