I recently started up in digital photography as a hobby and do all my importing and editing on a Samsung A7 tablet, using the LightRoom app as my main editing software. It is good to see how you manage your work flow and I picked up some good tips to carry over I to my work. The one thing I did have to do to smooth the import/export process was to invest in some small hardware items (adaptors and cables) to be able to move images between the devices that all seem to use different types of USB connector!!! At some point I will probably have to look at an external hard drive for backup - I currently use the micro SD expansion slot in the tablet.

Thank you, this was by far the best video I’ve seen about how to set up a good workflow for downloading and editing photos on the iPad! I’m considering getting an iPad Pro to do most of my sorting/culling and editing, but was afraid to spend that much money on a device and then find out it doesn’t work that well for me. This makes it look very doable. I’m not really an Apple fan-I use a Windows PC and an Android phone, but have always said Apple makes the best tablets. I may try out this workflow on my iPad Air just to see how it works (obviously will be slower than the Pro) before I commit to purchasing the new Pro.

Good job. So many videos whinge about IOS shortcomings. It is what it is. You've played to its strengths and your workflow is pretty efficient. In many ways, it's adaptable to high-end Chromebooks too, as LR works about the same. Plus you get the keyboard and a real file system. I'm experimenting with my iPad and my Chromebook to see which direction to go in. Pros and cons for each.

That’s a fantastic video. Thanks for sharing your whole workflow, it was quite deep and fun to be able to sit by and see how you manage your files!
I’ve been using my iPad for some editing but it’s not my main device. Gonna try it out to try to prioritize it since I love having it around.
On iOS 15 they might give us some better stats for file management. It seems that you already have EXIF info on the Photos app, just sitting there by the images (I use an extension for that). Let’s see if this will improve the Files app as well so it becomes more of a Finder than a fancy folder maker.
    Cheers!

Hey Aaron, I was thinking the same, but instead I just got the Lacie 20TB RAID with Thunderbolt 3, if you want to use NAS at full speed, you need to create the infrastructure for 10Gbe or get a NAS with Thunderbolt 3 (around 799)... if you're prime member of amazon, they get you unlimited storage for photos (RAW included). I'm using amazon photos as backup for my raw, the cool thing from amazon is they can create the backup fro the external Lacie, also I have JPEGs on flicker (unlimited for 60 USD) and all the photos on the 20 TB RAID. My 2TB iCloud Photo library is full. Kudos, please let me know if you have any question.

    • @snapsbyfox

I tried looking into NAS but I have no idea where to even start…. I will wait for someone else to mess around with getting NAS working with iCloud / Adobe Cloud before thinking about it. Cheers

    • @NicoEinsidler
      @NicoEinsidler Рік тому

@@snapsbyfox I've set up my own home server with several HDDs that are mirrored on (ZFS) and off-site. The server then serves those files via SMB. This works like a charm when you have a great network connection (LAN > WIFI) on any computer, but with Files app on my iPad I encountered many issues. It is just not reliable and right now, I would not recommend this. Some issues include:
      - loosing connection to SMB share
      - Pixelmator wouldn't recognize some Fuji RAW files anymore
      - file previews in the Files app don't work when using SMB
      - slow in general
      - saving a file back via share sheet fails sometimes
If you'd want to do this, I would highly disencourage you to use a Raspberry as you need a fast ethernet port on that computer and you would want to have a lot of SATA plugs available on the motherboard (for all the HDDs ;) ).
Another issue are huge RAW files. Even directly connected via LAN to my router previews need some time. So browsing through my photo library (goes back to 2012) becomes painfully slow. I am however working on a small web server to have blazingly fast proxies created for preview and served as a clean web app. Let's see...

My question stems from an photo editor's point of view: May one *benefit* from Apple's Mini-LED display for the M1 iPad Pro 12.9' during post-processing (in Photoshop Lightroom)? Or will one only get to witness the "glory" brightness of 1000 nits and beyond *only* when *viewing* HDR content? I've been told that Apple's new XDR projects at around 500/ 600 nits during normal usage. Do you notice any micro-contrast detail improvements when editing on the 12.9' mini-LED vs the normal 11'? Please advise, and thank you in advance.

I’m thinking about purchasing an M1 iPad Pro for when I start traveling again with my Fuji cameras. Quick question for you. With iOS 15 were you able to do a speed test (download time) of downloading (for example) a 32 gig UHS-II SD card with a UHS-II card reader to the M1 iPad Pro?
and backing up the same full 32 gig card data to Samsung T5?
That was my workflow when I traveling to Cuba and Guatemala with the previous model iPad Pro.
Keeping it simple, sleek. Returning back to United States with all data on the iPad, the Samsung T5, and 8 SanDisk Ext Pro memory cards.
I’m trying to ascertain if there is a software bottleneck or hardware bottleneck with the new in one iPad.
If it’s not much faster I mayyyyy. just stick with what I have for another year.
    Thanks in advance

My M1 ipad pro 11 inch just came in. Its great, my main editing rig is my gaming PC, as it is quite powerful, but I love being able to do edit on the go, or even on the couch. I didnt even get a big storage option, I just move my photos to edit on and off it with an ssd (superfast with thunderbolt ports) and am a happy camper. Once lumafusion adds thunderbolt support for editing off a hard drive this summer, i will be set forever. Its a great system.

That’s a great overview with some good tips. I struggled for years to make an iPad-only workflow work. I gave up when the M1 Macbooks came out and They became competitive with the iPad in terms of weight and battery life. In hindsight, maybe I just didn’t have a sufficiently up to date iPad (12.9 inch 1st gen pro). Lightroom runs slow on it (esp the brush tool) and it uses a lightning port. Anyway, I’m happy with the M1 Macbook Air and LR Classic. (Apart from on Easyjet, when it’s a bit of a squeeze!). Would be interestingbto see an update of this vid with ios 16.

Thank you for your video. I have a question, that I think you covered but I did not get it 100%. I am thinking for buying Pro 13inch with 256GB or 512GB. I work on thousands pictures, so I would go for a iCloud or Adobe Cloud - 1T. Is it correct how I get it: when I import 10 000 wedding images to iPad, it stores all of the raw data on the cloud and keeps proxy on iPad? Or I am getting it wrong? Normally I bring home around 6-10K shots from a wedding, then pick around 600-800 shots and edit them. I cannot delete the unused shots until client confirmed they are happy with the final result. So I don't want to keep all raw files on the iPad for 1 month. But if the raw files are stored on the cloud - I would not mind. But then how does the upload works? 8K shots it is about 150GB. When I import to Lightroom - it still saves them all on the iPad and only then uploads to the cloud and deleted from iPad and keeps Proxy only? This is where I do not understand how the process works. Please advise.

Wondering if Capture One for Ipad got into your Ipad? Looks quite raw yet. No layers, masks, curves, etc...

Thanks for avery interesting vlog, you seem to have a good system.
Can I ask I recently got affinity photo but it now seems to hijack all my photos. I can't open a file old ones or new without it going into affinity photos editing straight away. I.E. if I want to just look through a file it won't work without opening in affinity first and I have to look at one photo at a time.
    Anyone any ideas.....

Do you ever have issues exporting to the Sandisk SSD? I just started using a M1 Pro, and want to use a SanDisk SSD as a physical backup when traveling, and then a method to transfer to my PC and then onto a HHD.
I import from my R5’s cfxpress card right into Lightroom. My intention is to cull and edit within Lightroom and then export the DNGs to the SSD, like you did in the video. I have been trying to export a month’s worth of photos at a time, 100-1600. After Lightroom finishes rendering them within the Export As with DNG selected, I then go into the SSD and build a folder system Pictures then 2021 then 12 as an example for my December pictures, and then export. This sometimes works, but sometimes when I export my 2nd or 3rd month, into the month’s specific folder within the 2021 folder, the process does not complete correctly. All the folders within the parent Pictures folder on the SSD are erased, and the month’s worth of photos are now in the Pictures folder themselves. I though this was an error with the SSD drive and ordered a replacement, which did the same thing. I believe it may be an issue with Lightroom Mobile/iOS because I have tried to export 1609 photos/videos one time, and when they are finished rendering and ready to export, it said I could was going to share 1411 of them, regardless if it was to the SSD drive or the iPad’s internal Files folder. Any idea if this has been experienced before or what I may be doing wrong? This iPad process with a SSD is the exact solution I have been hoping for, but this exporting issue and the inability to confidently store physical backups is very frustrating. Thanks!

I have an almost identical workflow to you but I am trying to move away from Adobe completely, I wish there was an alternative as good as Lightroom on the iPad.

I have iPad 12.9 m2 and it’s overheating every time when I start editing raw files 55-60mb in Lightroom. maybe I'm doing something wrong? Or is the iPad not that good for editing raw files?

8:45 You can actually choose a lossless compression (ZIP/LZW) to keep the file size smaller. No quality is lost. Don't know how fast the iPad can work with losslessly compressed TIFF-files, but it's worth a try.

Thanks for the heads up…. i will have a look. Always thought compressing could mess something up. Will check. cheers

@@snapsbyfox Lossless doesn't mess up like JPEG does. A 70 MB 16-bit tiff file could go down to around 50 MB with lossless ZIP-compression

Why would you not edit on an iPad? Just curious as I’m really interested in this new iPad as a computer world.

@@Wilfrat I doubt the Adobe apps perform the same as their desktop counterparts and have the same full functionalities. I could be wrong though ^^
When I want to edit stuff on the go I just use my MBP 16"
More screen is always better and 16" isn't even enough x)
But if you like it go for it 👍🏻 i still think it's cool

Hey, Great video! I've got a small question. with lightroom, do you have access to the fujifilm presets that come with the camera? can we go through them and change if needed?
