I was a photographer all of my career, mostly film days. Then digital came along. I was taught to keep every image from a shoot in a folder and that would become your negatives. Then duplicate the folder. You would work from the duplicate for all your edits. It made sense to me because you could always go back to your original unedited folder if you needed. I e had a long break from photography brain is fried thinking about workflow. I’m glad you use Lightroom for raw and iPhoto for jpegs. Stumbled upon that idea myself this week. My computer is so choked up now I clearly can’t keep every image! 😂

That is quite an efficient workflow that have created. I would suggest as a mechanical engineer as well as owner of a drone photography, videography and inspection company here in Toronto, Canada that you may want to look into a NAS (Network Attached Storage). With NAS, you will be able to create your own local server in your home office and have access to the files where every you are on any device. You can also scale the capacity of your NAS as your needs change. I would recommend NAS solutions from Synology, QNap and WD.
I'd give a tip for those like me who have many cameras of the same brand like Fuji. After chosing your color space in the camera settings, you should change the prefix of the files names. For example I chose Adobe RGB so my files are something like _DSC0000. You can't remove the underscore because you chose AdobeRGB but you can change the DSC (or whatever) to something recognizable PER CAMERA, like _XP3 for an XPRO3 and _XT4, well for an xt4. This will avoid collision between files and an accident if you're not paying attention and have to put those different files in the same folder. If you didn't do yet you can with batch renaming (search and replace the prefixes). Then in the explorer you're using you could use the column sort by day of shooting to see them in order.
Would love to see a Affinity Photo 2 tutorial of you doing basic editing, and how pictures go from LR to Affinity and back to the catalog. Also, any good alternatives to LR to pair with Affinity? Thanks!
I quit Adobe subscription and use Capture One and Affinity Photo together. You can take the image from Capture One to Affinity Photo and back. Of course there are some limitations and not as seamless as Adobe LR and PS but for the price and capability of C1 and AF I can live with it.
For the best image quality possible, the choice is between DxO Photolab and Capture One. Both will extract more detail from your RAWs than Lightroom does. If you want something cheaper, you can get On1 PhotoRaw. The initial RAW conversion is not as sublime as the other two, but still pretty comparable to Lightroom. What's more important is that On1 is the most feature-rich of all these programs, and somehow also the cheapest. The value proposition here is frankly insane. However, all three alternatives have a perpetual license option (DxO doesn't even offer a subscription).
@@StunDamage he other advantage to ON1 is that it does have Ai key wording in the latest version. I use this and Affinity 2 .I also use Affinity on the intel based MacBook Pro and iPad Pro.Back up on my passport wireless , Drobo mini and apple cloud.
This was great, thank you. Particularly, I did not consider sharing the photos to my Apple Icloud, I was managing everythin from my drive, which was a pain, and difficult to share images unless doing it from my laptop.
One thing I learned the hard way is to always rename my files as I import them into Lightroom. As far as I know, when your camera rolls over from 9999 to 0001 you start creating files with the same name. It’s so easy to accidentally overwrite files when this happens. I don’t think Lightroom mobile has a rename on import feature, so I think on the iPad so maybe a renaming app is a good idea before import. I use Lightroom Classic but after watching this video I’m SO tempted to use your workflow. Online storage cost would be my only concern. Great video Roman!
Instead of renaming the files on import, I have always set up my camera(s) to replace the default letters at the front of the file name with custom letters to identify the camera and the series. Eg. my X-T3 files are saved as XT3A#### for the first 9999 photos instead of IMG####. When it starts over at 0001, I change the custom file name to XT3B####. This not only prevents overwriting files from two different series, but also from different bodies. I did the same thing with my Canon bodies before switching to Fuji.
Hi, I would recommend a NAS-Server at a place which is not your home (e.g. your parents home). If your SSD gets broke one day or your house starts burning (..or whatever) you will lose everything.
Yeah for sure it could work… as long as when you’re travelling you have good internet to connect, download and upload. It is something I might look into but its pretty expensive for a good solution
Yes I would agree with Noctor1zed but have the NAS at home and keep offsite backups elsewhere like parents/fiends. It’s not that expensive especially if as you say you do this daily (plus you can add the drives over time). If not; Sandisk Pro devices or LaCie with more rugged build. Cool video and informative
Backblaze or other online backup clouds are pretty reasonable now days, in price. Easier than faffing about with a Nas drive at your ‘parents house’ just in case of a house fire.
@@snapsbyfox not only is it expensive, but the entry model (still outrageously expensive for no reason) are so slow they’re unusable. My own workflow: RAW pictures locally and on a physical drive that I backup regularly, edited JPG on OneDrive (could be Apple Photos, Drop Box, whatever cloud) and that’s about it. I use Acronis every now and then to backup my external HD. Also: I never delete by SD cards. That way, if I lose my physical backup, I can always get the most recent pictures. Not the safest, but it’s been 15 years now without a single issue.
NAS is pretty expensive and no guarantee against long term obsolescence. For a professional okay you use it every day and a lot so the investment case stacks up. But for the pro/amateur I agree that cloud systems offer good value. I save all my RAW to my normal 2TB cloud subscription and don’t experience any performance issues with Capture1. But keep in mind cloud storage packages get modified by companies from time to time, so make sure you won’t have the rug pulled out from under your feet! I also use Apple photos for jpegs only - I think it no longer supports RAW in any case. Also bear in mind where you create your key words. They don’t always transfer across in a meta file…I recommend you do it in your editing app such as C1 or LRM.
Don’t use LR Cloud at the moment but I am exploring it. To that point I thought LR Cloud has Adobe Sensei built in which uses AI to identify subjects in your photos. Not sure if there is a setting to turn it on or off but you should be able to search something like “bird” and it will find those images for you keyword or not. Only down side is I think it requires a network connection to work as it doesn’t index that info. Could be wrong. Suffice it to say I think manual keywords are more reliable but Adobe Sensei may help in finding groups of photos to quickly start tagging portions. Cheers!
Lessons learned. I keep a 'catastrophe backup'. I'm a hobbyist and early on had a disaster with lightroom. I now backup my sd card after every shooting day, before I do anything. This backup is cumulative and kept on an external hard drive. The idea is I will never have to access it, except if there is a catastrophe. In several years I've only accessed it once. But it's worth it. Lesson 2, even if I intend to use sooc jpegs I now always also shoot raw. My editing is minimal, but sometimes a raw file can rescue me from a basic mistake such as underexposure. With drive capacity now such a reasonable price it's practical to do these things. Oh yes and I've learned not to be trigger happy. I find culling tedious so I do what I can to reduce the time needed for that.
Hi Roman, I basically Use the same equipment and software, except the publishing part. Also my workflow is the same: JPEG in Apple Photos raws in Lr; and Affinity as extra. However, for organising I have created a folder for each year since 2010. Inside each year there are my event Albums. This could be a visit to a city, holiday, event, wedding. At the end of my editing I use Adobe Bridge to rename the photos. I import them back in Lr (RAF/XMP). The numbering starts with the year, two unique characters for the album, and the last four digits are the number generated in my Fuji camera. In this way, I always know where they belong. Other than that I use an Apple dongle when I am abroad and have just my iPhone or iPad. With this I upload what is on the card to Lr as my first backup.
Keywording is interesting. I'm not a professional so my needs are different, but I did the opposite and started off by over-doing it. My advice would be just start doing it from now on with new pictures and as you have time gradually work backwards in 'chunks' in your library. If ever I try to start tasks like that 'at the beginning' I never catch up with the present.
Awesome breakdown Roman! I'm using Lightroom Classic for my editing without Adobe's cloud, so my workflow is undoubtedly going to differ from yours a bit. I love your method of folder breakdown, though. I did want to make a suggest, which you might already be thinking about. While I started out with SSD for the same reasons you've mentioned, I've graduated to NVMe for faster data copying/writing than even the SSD can handle. The Sabrent Rocket Nano 2TB is my go-to, and I've contemplated just buying one of these for each calendar year, and letting that be my offline archival method. Curious to know your thoughts!

Hi! Great video. Very happy to see that somebody is using "CC" in a professional setting. I swapped out of Classic after YEARS because it's just so clunky for my (amateur, hobbyist) use. "CC" (really unfortunate that it doesn't really have a distinct name) is, IMO, much better in almost every way. Only one thing from your video wasn't 100% clear -- your backup workflow. You kind of showed your file structure, but not where you're getting each file, or what that workflow looks like. For me, once a month or so, I'll export DNGs with settings for the previous month into a big bucket on an external SSD. For me, this feels like adequate backup in that I could, theoretically, just drop them all back into LR CC and they'd end up in basically the same place. But I don't use albums the way you do; I use tags for locations, and use the automatic date breakdowns to find older photos. Thanks again for the great content!

Appreciate you sharing your insight on your worflow - my question for you is if you've ever incorporated Lightroom Classic into your workflow? I only ask becasue I've struggled with this for over a decade and thing I finally mastered what works for me, but I have to resroty to using both Lightroom Mobile/CC with the Lightroom Classic catalog - it allows me to literally see all my 130k+ photos spanning over a decade very easily, with all the edits in tact that I can go back and re-edit should I ever need to.
What's the backup process? As you've imported into LR, do you take them from LR to then back them up on the drive? Also did I miss when you do your rating? I saw how you rate but not when?
You must have many terabytes of data by now. Where do store all your work, because cloud storage can get expensive? I keep Lightroom Classic so I can store my photos on a large hard drive and back that up. Good video!

I had the negative experience last week that my printed photos (Whitewall) looked completely different than on the screen in Lightroom mobile.
This is pretty much what I've been looking for, lately! I've recently culled my library of 55k+ photos, and have started organizing them in a reasonable way, but also want to have a workflow between my iPad and my MBP that's easy to go back and forth to. Lightroom is sadly probably the best way to do it.. I hate subscription software so much these days! In this attempt, I used Adobe Bridge (which is free) to cull and rate my photos a little easier, but that's not something that works for both interfaces. Trying to institute something that uses Apple Photos, as when importing to my iPad, it groups the RAW and Jpeg files together which is nice! But then trying to edit with something other than Lightroom is proving...difficult. I got the RAW Power app for iPad, but it doesn't yet support the RAW files from my X-S20.. *sigh*... probably stuck with Lightroom for now!
Hey man! You're a fuji shooter right? How do you feel about capture one? I switched to Fuji half a year ago, and picked up Capture one during black friday, and slowly making the switch. I feel the workflow is not as intuitive as lightroom, and it's slowing me down a bit tbh, but I feel the colors etc are nicer there. Any thoughts?
Hi Roman, not sure if you will get to my comment as this video deservedly has received a huge amount of feedback. Just wondered why you favour Affinity over photoshop for your top level editing, as you have Lightroom I assume you also have PS in the photographers package?
Any advice on moving from Lightroom Classic to the cloud based LR? I know that doing it would make workflow much simpler, but not sure where to start with historical (and not always that organised) catalogues... Can I shift them across somehow, or am I better starting from scratch?
Thank you for sharing with us Roman! Do you ever geo-tag your photos at all…?? I tend to drop the photos on the Lightroom map and can filter any photos by their location, it also get transferred to the jpeg and Apple photos.
If you use Google Photos it will geo-tag photos automatically.

Great video but I'm a bit confused by a small number of photos in those folders - I would take much much more than 62 photos in Casablanca for example.. even after deleting rejected ones. Do you really take so few photos on location?
It’s amazing, we use the same work flow, Lightroom CC + Affinity photo for editing, and apple gallery for export, with an external hard drive for backup. I didn’t know you can export edited DNG, thought it was just a simple file format conversion. One thing I’m worried about is my Lightroom CC running out of space. How do you get your raw/dng/jpegs to your ssd? Do you have to manually re-sort all of them the same way you did earlier in Lightroom (deleting all bad ones etc.) or is there a way to export your final selection as raw, dng and jpeg from the Lightroom cloud to your ssd?
Thank you for this video! Bu what does this mean for your camera / card setup? My new camera has 2, coming form only 1 card. So now I am lost whether I should mirror the cards raw images, have one card with the raw and one with jpg. Or raw + jpg mirrored? Your workflow seems to use only raw as the basis? Is that right? thanks for the effort and the sharing. i do have ONE question: unlike ever other Fuji photographer i watch, you do not obsess about Fuji post-processing image issues: worms. you never mention Capture One. you rely on Lightroom and never discuss Iridient X Transformer. are you REALLY satisfied with LR as your Fuji post processing software? i ask not to flame but i am a very appreciative subscriber who uses the X-T1 and X-T2 and i am confused about the LR vs Cap1 debate. thumbs up.

Thanks for sharing your workflow. Interesting to see how it is tweaked/optomize over time. Was curious: how much adobe cloud storage do you have for roughly how many pictures in how many formats (raw/dng/jpg)? How often do you project you may need to increase cloud storage over time?
Nice to see a new workflow video! I’m just in a middle of organizing my whole library and workflow. I have over 10,000 photos from over 2 years scattered in 30+ Lightroom catalogs and 3 hard drives with no logic what so ever 😅 it’s a painful process but I know it’s going to be worth it! Do you have any experience with other cloud based back up services than the Creative Cloud?
wow! that’s a big project but deffo worth doing. Hmmm not really apart from apple photos… which technically is a pretty decent editor… but obviously it’s not Lightroom. Another option is to just store your library backup on a generic cloud service… but then you’d need to delete and re upload it every so often
@@snapsbyfox But you don't use your ''System library'' on apple photos do you? When creating a library in apple photos just for personal or work photography you don't get the iCloud sync... Maybe the best thing would be to use CC storage as I'm someone who's also traveling a lot and I'm a bit concerned about having all my photos on hard drives. But I'm just a bit afraid of the price building up over the years.
Thanks for the video. As far as regretting not applying more specific keywords, Lightroom automatically does this-although it’s far from perfect. I would like to learn more about the process you follow to create your backup, which you said is a copy of the Lightroom catalog (structure) in the Adobe Cloud.

Noooooo! Yeah I’ve done that before. Hence now back up to cloud as well as physical. Obvs you can be more secure with a second physical backup but given you travel like me, it’s extra crap to carry round
@@eortizfoto Consider ah HDD, of course the technology is older but you can restore a hdd in a lab but not a ssd. A hdd can be gone trough fire and can be restored
Great. Thanks Roman. I am trying to sort out a mobile workflow. I have my mbp which is sort of used only at home, with external drives, and external monitors, etc. But I have an ipad mini that I want to use for the initial process of reviewing, culling, and initial edits, when I am travelling. I also use LR, but the Classic version (on the MBP), but have it able to sync to Lightroom on the iPad. So importing either side will sync back across to the other - providing sync is on. I prefer LR Classic on the laptop, as it is a bit more full featured, and it is what I am used to. But where I struggle, is performing the backups. I too have the high speed Sandisk Extreme Pro external drive, but have struggled to get the ipad mini to copy my SD card to it. Perhaps the "secret" that I might just have picked up from your video, is that maybe I should be "exporting" from the Ipad LR into it, rather than trying to use ipad Files. Any advice on that part would be appreciated. I could always do it from the MBP but I don't want to always have to take that on my travels. I need to start learning to travel light...
its really hard to say mate without seeing it in front of me. On the iPad it does also work like that but I export straight to the SSD… I am assuming you’re running IOS 16 etc and have a USB C port on an iPad though..
@@snapsbyfox I've only recently upgraded to the latest IOS 16.x.x(?). I'll try it again tomorrow/Friday, as I am out tomorrow at Lightopia, in Crystal Palace, and will try to use that as my test for using the ipad again. But, yes it has a USB-C port on the iPad, in fact I use a dock dongle with multiple USB ports, and SD card readers, etc. It is the Mini 6, so quite capable, would be nice to have the bigger screen size though. Something to think about. I guess if I get really stuck, we could always meet up somewhere for a coffee, and sort it out. I'll see how it goes after tomorrow's little shoot.
No need to panic... I've just ran a quick test taking 6 images in my office, and just managed to load them into the ipad, and then copy them onto an external hard drive, as well as import to LR, and export the jpgs back out to the external drive. So looks like it can work for me. I need to play a bit more after tomorrow's event, but it should be ok. Just need to make sure the ipad has plenty of power, as I've only one USB-C port even on the dock. But it was workable. Thanks for the ideas.
Great video thanks. One question. How to manage the Apple Photos library? It gets bigger and bigger with the jpeg keepers. Do you put it on the cloud buying iCloud space ?

Great video on a cloud based LR workflow involving the iPad. I use an iPad Pro as my main editing machine now. One thing I do at the culling stage is set the LR album filters to only show picked or unflagged images. Then when you reject a photo LR automatically moves on to the next image. Only a small change but it saves a load of time when culling a big shoot and makes the whole process a bit easier. Once I'm done I filter the rejected images and just have a scan through to make sure I want to delete them all.
No cloud for me, and I'm using Capture One Pro instead of LR for my importing, sorting, library stuff and the more I get used to C1 the less I'm using Affinity. (Though Affinity is awesome and especially for the price!) Capture One is really a One stop shop and has everything. Though it has taken me a while to get used to it, it's a bit different. I buy the license (upgrade) every other or three years so it's 50-75% cheaper than a subscription. Really great info in this video, thanks! Cheers! 😺
Just a quick question. You mention not to sync to adobe cloud when first importing. At what point do you sync, after initial edits and further culling, or after final edits?
Hello, thank you for your brilliant video. I have a question about your profiles. The profiles (Astia/Pro Neg Hi...) from the Fuji camera also appear there. Can you load these film profiles or do they only come because you shot with a Fuji?
For the last step of backing up jpeg, dng and raw in a hard drive, how does the culling process look like? Given that when you delete rejected photos in Lightroom Cloud they are not removed from the local storage. Do you cull them again locally? Or download the three versions from the final selection directly from Lightroom Cloud into the drive?
This workflow is simple indeed. And I like how it work the same in all the devices. But how do you transfer the pictures to your ssd? One by one ? Cause it seems quite a work.
I don't comment on your videos much but today I felt compelled because I think this workflow is brilliant, Roman! Of course I say that because our workflows are almost identical! 😆However, I did learn a couple of very useful tips, thank you. Also, I agree to get some distance from photos and view them with a fresh perspective later. When traveling, I do light edits and save them to either the cloud if I have good Wifi or export what I've done to my SSD from the road. Regarding keywords, I am in the same boat. However, AI is getting so good that these days if I am looking for photos, I would say LR and Synology Photos on my NAS (which is part of the last step of my workflow instead of the SSD you use) does a great job of helping me find it.
thanks! not the first person to mention a NAS… i think this would be the next logical step for me once I get a home base to travel from rather than just hopping from one airbnb to another. Also once my library (photo and video) grows
@@snapsbyfox A NAS certainly is something that puts my mind at ease each time I run a workflow to it as the last step. The only drawbacks are the expense and it can run a bit slow. On another note: curious with your organizational structure in LR, how do you manage when for example, you take 2-3 different genres of shots during one trip? Do you file all of them into the name of the city you were in, regardless? Or do you copy for example, landscape shots into a different folder and leave street shots in the base folder? I run into this situation often and still cannot seem to find the best method. Cheers!!

Love the clean, logical, simple workflow - I have one question though - how would you add GPS data to your photos? I usually use Lightroom Classic and that has a Map module that can load geotagging tracks that match timestamps and then each photo in that shoot automatically get their location - thought?

I quit Adobe subscription and use Capture One and Affinity Photo together. You can take the image from Capture One to Affinity Photo and back. Of course there are some limitations and not as seamless as Adobe LR and PS but for the price and capability of C1 and AF I can live with it.
For the best image quality possible, the choice is between DxO Photolab and Capture One. Both will extract more detail from your RAWs than Lightroom does. If you want something cheaper, you can get On1 PhotoRaw. The initial RAW conversion is not as sublime as the other two, but still pretty comparable to Lightroom. What's more important is that On1 is the most feature-rich of all these programs, and somehow also the cheapest. The value proposition here is frankly insane. However, all three alternatives have a perpetual license option (DxO doesn't even offer a subscription).
@@StunDamage he other advantage to ON1 is that it does have Ai key wording in the latest version. I use this and Affinity 2 .I also use Affinity on the intel based MacBook Pro and iPad Pro.Back up on my passport wireless , Drobo mini and apple cloud.

One thing I learned the hard way is to always rename my files as I import them into Lightroom. As far as I know, when your camera rolls over from 9999 to 0001 you start creating files with the same name. It’s so easy to accidentally overwrite files when this happens. I don’t think Lightroom mobile has a rename on import feature, so I think on the iPad so maybe a renaming app is a good idea before import.
I use Lightroom Classic but after watching this video I’m SO tempted to use your workflow. Online storage cost would be my only concern. Great video Roman!
Instead of renaming the files on import, I have always set up my camera(s) to replace the default letters at the front of the file name with custom letters to identify the camera and the series. Eg. my X-T3 files are saved as XT3A#### for the first 9999 photos instead of IMG####. When it starts over at 0001, I change the custom file name to XT3B####. This not only prevents overwriting files from two different series, but also from different bodies. I did the same thing with my Canon bodies before switching to Fuji.

Hi, I would recommend a NAS-Server at a place which is not your home (e.g. your parents home). If your SSD gets broke one day or your house starts burning (..or whatever) you will lose everything.
Yeah for sure it could work… as long as when you’re travelling you have good internet to connect, download and upload. It is something I might look into but its pretty expensive for a good solution
Yes I would agree with Noctor1zed but have the NAS at home and keep offsite backups elsewhere like parents/fiends. It’s not that expensive especially if as you say you do this daily (plus you can add the drives over time). If not; Sandisk Pro devices or LaCie with more rugged build. Cool video and informative
Backblaze or other online backup clouds are pretty reasonable now days, in price. Easier than faffing about with a Nas drive at your ‘parents house’ just in case of a house fire.
@@snapsbyfox not only is it expensive, but the entry model (still outrageously expensive for no reason) are so slow they’re unusable. My own workflow: RAW pictures locally and on a physical drive that I backup regularly, edited JPG on OneDrive (could be Apple Photos, Drop Box, whatever cloud) and that’s about it. I use Acronis every now and then to backup my external HD. Also: I never delete by SD cards. That way, if I lose my physical backup, I can always get the most recent pictures. Not the safest, but it’s been 15 years now without a single issue.
NAS is pretty expensive and no guarantee against long term obsolescence. For a professional okay you use it every day and a lot so the investment case stacks up. But for the pro/amateur I agree that cloud systems offer good value. I save all my RAW to my normal 2TB cloud subscription and don’t experience any performance issues with Capture1. But keep in mind cloud storage packages get modified by companies from time to time, so make sure you won’t have the rug pulled out from under your feet! I also use Apple photos for jpegs only - I think it no longer supports RAW in any case. Also bear in mind where you create your key words. They don’t always transfer across in a meta file…I recommend you do it in your editing app such as C1 or LRM.

Don’t use LR Cloud at the moment but I am exploring it. To that point I thought LR Cloud has Adobe Sensei built in which uses AI to identify subjects in your photos. Not sure if there is a setting to turn it on or off but you should be able to search something like “bird” and it will find those images for you keyword or not. Only down side is I think it requires a network connection to work as it doesn’t index that info. Could be wrong.
Suffice it to say I think manual keywords are more reliable but Adobe Sensei may help in finding groups of photos to quickly start tagging portions. Cheers!

Lessons learned. I keep a 'catastrophe backup'. I'm a hobbyist and early on had a disaster with lightroom. I now backup my sd card after every shooting day, before I do anything. This backup is cumulative and kept on an external hard drive. The idea is I will never have to access it, except if there is a catastrophe. In several years I've only accessed it once. But it's worth it. Lesson 2, even if I intend to use sooc jpegs I now always also shoot raw. My editing is minimal, but sometimes a raw file can rescue me from a basic mistake such as underexposure. With drive capacity now such a reasonable price it's practical to do these things. Oh yes and I've learned not to be trigger happy. I find culling tedious so I do what I can to reduce the time needed for that.
Hi Roman, I basically Use the same equipment and software, except the publishing part. Also my workflow is the same: JPEG in Apple Photos raws in Lr; and Affinity as extra. However, for organising I have created a folder for each year since 2010. Inside each year there are my event Albums. This could be a visit to a city, holiday, event, wedding. At the end of my editing I use Adobe Bridge to rename the photos. I import them back in Lr (RAF/XMP). The numbering starts with the year, two unique characters for the album, and the last four digits are the number generated in my Fuji camera. In this way, I always know where they belong. Other than that I use an Apple dongle when I am abroad and have just my iPhone or iPad. With this I upload what is on the card to Lr as my first backup.

Keywording is interesting. I'm not a professional so my needs are different, but I did the opposite and started off by over-doing it. My advice would be just start doing it from now on with new pictures and as you have time gradually work backwards in 'chunks' in your library. If ever I try to start tasks like that 'at the beginning' I never catch up with the present.
Awesome breakdown Roman! I'm using Lightroom Classic for my editing without Adobe's cloud, so my workflow is undoubtedly going to differ from yours a bit. I love your method of folder breakdown, though. I did want to make a suggest, which you might already be thinking about. While I started out with SSD for the same reasons you've mentioned, I've graduated to NVMe for faster data copying/writing than even the SSD can handle. The Sabrent Rocket Nano 2TB is my go-to, and I've contemplated just buying one of these for each calendar year, and letting that be my offline archival method. Curious to know your thoughts!

Hi! Great video. Very happy to see that somebody is using "CC" in a professional setting. I swapped out of Classic after YEARS because it's just so clunky for my (amateur, hobbyist) use. "CC" (really unfortunate that it doesn't really have a distinct name) is, IMO, much better in almost every way.
Only one thing from your video wasn't 100% clear -- your backup workflow. You kind of showed your file structure, but not where you're getting each file, or what that workflow looks like.
For me, once a month or so, I'll export DNGs with settings for the previous month into a big bucket on an external SSD. For me, this feels like adequate backup in that I could, theoretically, just drop them all back into LR CC and they'd end up in basically the same place. But I don't use albums the way you do; I use tags for locations, and use the automatic date breakdowns to find older photos.

Appreciate you sharing your insight on your worflow - my question for you is if you've ever incorporated Lightroom Classic into your workflow? I only ask becasue I've struggled with this for over a decade and thing I finally mastered what works for me, but I have to resroty to using both Lightroom Mobile/CC with the Lightroom Classic catalog - it allows me to literally see all my 130k+ photos spanning over a decade very easily, with all the edits in tact that I can go back and re-edit should I ever need to.

I had the negative experience last week that my printed photos (Whitewall) looked completely different than on the screen in Lightroom mobile.
This is pretty much what I've been looking for, lately! I've recently culled my library of 55k+ photos, and have started organizing them in a reasonable way, but also want to have a workflow between my iPad and my MBP that's easy to go back and forth to. Lightroom is sadly probably the best way to do it.. I hate subscription software so much these days!
In this attempt, I used Adobe Bridge (which is free) to cull and rate my photos a little easier, but that's not something that works for both interfaces. Trying to institute something that uses Apple Photos, as when importing to my iPad, it groups the RAW and Jpeg files together which is nice! But then trying to edit with something other than Lightroom is proving...difficult. I got the RAW Power app for iPad, but it doesn't yet support the RAW files from my X-S20.. *sigh*... probably stuck with Lightroom for now!
Could you talk a little more about your Apple Photos + Lightroom setup? I'm in a similar spot to you it seems, just way less photos yet :)

Any advice on moving from Lightroom Classic to the cloud based LR? I know that doing it would make workflow much simpler, but not sure where to start with historical (and not always that organised) catalogues... Can I shift them across somehow, or am I better starting from scratch?

I tend to drop the photos on the Lightroom map and can filter any photos by their location, it also get transferred to the jpeg and Apple photos.
If you use Google Photos it will geo-tag photos automatically.
Great video but I'm a bit confused by a small number of photos in those folders - I would take much much more than 62 photos in Casablanca for example.. even after deleting rejected ones. Do you really take so few photos on location?

How do you get your raw/dng/jpegs to your ssd?
Do you have to manually re-sort all of them the same way you did earlier in Lightroom (deleting all bad ones etc.) or is there a way to export your final selection as raw, dng and jpeg from the Lightroom cloud to your ssd?

So now I am lost whether I should mirror the cards raw images, have one card with the raw and one with jpg. Or raw + jpg mirrored? Your workflow seems to use only raw as the basis? Is that right? thanks for the effort and the sharing. i do have ONE question: unlike ever other Fuji photographer i watch, you do not obsess about Fuji post-processing image issues: worms. you never mention Capture One. you rely on Lightroom and never discuss Iridient X Transformer. are you REALLY satisfied with LR as your Fuji post processing software? i ask not to flame but i am a very appreciative subscriber who uses the X-T1 and X-T2 and i am confused about the LR vs Cap1 debate. thumbs up.

I’m just in a middle of organizing my whole library and workflow. I have over 10,000 photos from over 2 years scattered in 30+ Lightroom catalogs and 3 hard drives with no logic what so ever 😅 it’s a painful process but I know it’s going to be worth it!

wow! that’s a big project but deffo worth doing. Hmmm not really apart from apple photos… which technically is a pretty decent editor… but obviously it’s not Lightroom. Another option is to just store your library backup on a generic cloud service… but then you’d need to delete and re upload it every so often
@@snapsbyfox But you don't use your ''System library'' on apple photos do you? When creating a library in apple photos just for personal or work photography you don't get the iCloud sync... Maybe the best thing would be to use CC storage as I'm someone who's also traveling a lot and I'm a bit concerned about having all my photos on hard drives. But I'm just a bit afraid of the price building up over the years.

Thanks for the video. As far as regretting not applying more specific keywords, Lightroom automatically does this-although it’s far from perfect. Great. Thanks Roman. I am trying to sort out a mobile workflow. I have my mbp which is sort of used only at home, with external drives, and external monitors, etc. But I have an ipad mini that I want to use for the initial process of reviewing, culling, and initial edits, when I am travelling. I also use LR, but the Classic version (on the MBP), but have it able to sync to Lightroom on the iPad. So importing either side will sync back across to the other - providing sync is on. I prefer LR Classic on the laptop, as it is a bit more full featured, and it is what I am used to. But where I struggle, is performing the backups. I too have the high speed Sandisk Extreme Pro external drive, but have struggled to get the ipad mini to copy my SD card to it. Perhaps the "secret" that I might just have picked up from your video, is that maybe I should be "exporting" from the Ipad LR into it, rather than trying to use ipad Files. Any advice on that part would be appreciated. I could always do it from the MBP but I don't want to always have to take that on my travels. I need to start learning to travel light...
its really hard to say mate without seeing it in front of me. On the iPad it does also work like that but I export straight to the SSD… I am assuming you’re running IOS 16 etc and have a USB C port on an iPad though..
@@snapsbyfox I've only recently upgraded to the latest IOS 16.x.x(?). I'll try it again tomorrow/Friday, as I am out tomorrow at Lightopia, in Crystal Palace, and will try to use that as my test for using the ipad again. But, yes it has a USB-C port on the iPad, in fact I use a dock dongle with multiple USB ports, and SD card readers, etc. It is the Mini 6, so quite capable, would be nice to have the bigger screen size though. Something to think about. I guess if I get really stuck, we could always meet up somewhere for a coffee, and sort it out. I'll see how it goes after tomorrow's little shoot.
No need to panic... I've just ran a quick test taking 6 images in my office, and just managed to load them into the ipad, and then copy them onto an external hard drive, as well as import to LR, and export the jpgs back out to the external drive. So looks like it can work for me. I need to play a bit more after tomorrow's event, but it should be ok. Just need to make sure the ipad has plenty of power, as I've only one USB-C port even on the dock. But it was workable. Thanks for the ideas.

Consider browsing macOS Finder in a "Column" view with file sorting done by "Kind". This proved to have the very best UX for me.
Great video on a cloud based LR workflow involving the iPad. I use an iPad Pro as my main editing machine now. One thing I do at the culling stage is set the LR album filters to only show picked or unflagged images. Then when you reject a photo LR automatically moves on to the next image. Only a small change but it saves a load of time when culling a big shoot and makes the whole process a bit easier. Once I'm done I filter the rejected images and just have a scan through to make sure I want to delete them all.
No cloud for me, and I'm using Capture One Pro instead of LR for my importing, sorting, library stuff and the more I get used to C1 the less I'm using Affinity. (Though Affinity is awesome and especially for the price!) Capture One is really a One stop shop and has everything. Though it has taken me a while to get used to it, it's a bit different. I buy the license (upgrade) every other or three years so it's 50-75% cheaper than a subscription. Really great info in this video, thanks! Cheers! 😺

For the last step of backing up jpeg, dng and raw in a hard drive, how does the culling process look like? Given that when you delete rejected photos in Lightroom Cloud they are not removed from the local storage. Do you cull them again locally? Or download the three versions from the final selection directly from Lightroom Cloud into the drive?
This workflow is simple indeed. And I like how it work the same in all the devices. But how do you transfer the pictures to your ssd? One by one ? Cause it seems quite a work.
I don't comment on your videos much but today I felt compelled because I think this workflow is brilliant, Roman! Of course I say that because our workflows are almost identical! 😆However, I did learn a couple of very useful tips, thank you.
Also, I agree to get some distance from photos and view them with a fresh perspective later. When traveling, I do light edits and save them to either the cloud if I have good Wifi or export what I've done to my SSD from the road.
Regarding keywords, I am in the same boat. However, AI is getting so good that these days if I am looking for photos, I would say LR and Synology Photos on my NAS (which is part of the last step of my workflow instead of the SSD you use) does a great job of helping me find it.

@@snapsbyfox A NAS certainly is something that puts my mind at ease each time I run a workflow to it as the last step. The only drawbacks are the expense and it can run a bit slow. On another note: curious with your organizational structure in LR, how do you manage when for example, you take 2-3 different genres of shots during one trip? Do you file all of them into the name of the city you were in, regardless? Or do you copy for example, landscape shots into a different folder and leave street shots in the base folder? I run into this situation often and still cannot seem to find the best method. Cheers!!

I usually use Lightroom Classic and that has a Map module that can load geotagging tracks that match timestamps and then each photo in that shoot automatically get their location - thought?
