Thank you Gordy. I have always appreciated your straightforward approach to practicing and drumming, many times demystifying fads and clichés. It is great to have you back!
I just found you on UA-cam and really dig your lessons. Thank you for the great teachings! In another video I saw you playing the Bassdrum so effortless - even complicated and syncopated stuff. I was hoping you have something to share about your footwork approach some day :-)
Hey Gk, I just recently started watching your videos and I found your explanation of the open close to be the best by far. I have also seen the open close technique being used in a lot of extreme drumming. I wish you were my beginning drum teacher because I think I have picked up a lot of bad habits in my 25 years of playing. Stay solid my man
what I have found that is good for a towel not just controlling the sticks but also strengthen your wrist fingers & forearms..but of course that isnt the full story either ..you also have to learn to control rebound as well ...both ideas work well and I think both should be used as is both are important
Thanks for all the great videos. You are a master teacher. I have a question. I have tendinitis in my right wrist. Exactly where you put a black dot in one of your videos from 2013. I have limited mobility in my wrist and pain if I use it too much. Would you recommend the open/close technique or the Moeller technique?
Thank you, and you are welcome! Regarding your wrist, rest is best, and ice is nice: 5-10 minutes on, 5-10 minutes off, 2-3 cycles couple times a day. For now don't worry about either technique, or even playing (unless you absolutely have to) until you are pain free. Then when starting again, go very easy. Did your tendonitis come from playing? If so, get some lessons with a good teacher so you can avoid this problem in the future. (I do Skype lessons.) If not, take your time getting back to playing again, don't push yourself too hard. Let your hands get comfortable with these movements again. If you feel any pain, stop!
I was worried becouse i trained in a padded chair and i dont get too much of a rebound and i thought that wasn’t good. But i think i can train a bit more with no rebound like you said. Thank you for the video.
Hi Al, No. On a pillow you must think of playing each note with wrist. You might be incorporating a tiny bit of O/C unconsciously, but it's really wrist on a zero rebound surface.
Is there any good in practicing at all with no towel with the full rebound.? Or should just only do with the towel and only practice on surface that simulate the feel of the actual drums?

I was practice like that, when i was young, this good to learn controlling the sticks.

Thank you for all that you for drumming.
Thank you Sir...this is going to be tough for me... Glad you're back. Stay safe.
Dude. Brilliant. You nailed exactly why I don't normally like playing on practice pads, because of the rebound
i agree
Thanks for the tip :)
Great video! Had me smiling when you started slapping on the towel.

All I see is Bruce Willies teaching me drums.
Grande!! 👊😈👍
The best
Thank you very much Sir :)
Most welcome!
Hi Gordy, when practicing doubles on a pillow or towel, are you still using the open close technique to produce the 2nd note? cheers, from London UK

Playing on pad without towel is good too, but I think it's important to do both.
