    Wow, I'm on a back to basics mission to get rid of bad habits on my left hand and develop good fundamentals and as I'm on the pad watching this the way you're describing this is just genius. It's like an epiphany

    This is by far the best lesson on fulcrum I've ever seen.

    In the short time I've been studying, I find much of drumming is having an awareness of gravity and the mechanics of the body. I have not come across anything so in depth to these ideas like I have in these series of videos. Usually, these ideas are only mentioned in passing. This is a great help to having an advanced understanding of the 'basics' to drumming. Tremendous.

    I'm 44, and think I'm the teen being taugh by that orignal teacher using the stick-fulcrum misconception. I've been making it work for over 25yrs, but I'm also a Physics major, and this vid was definitely an eye-opener. I can't believe I didn't make the keep-fingers-on-the stick correlation before. Super!

    I been banging away, self taught, for almost 30 yrs. Now I'm starting all over. I feel like I'm better in 1 week of practice than I've ever been. You are awesome!

    As a self taught drummer, I've been unbalanced all my many years of drumming, and subsequently it's made it even harder to improve my chops!
    Your vid is a revelation, I am indebted to you for revealing the mechanics of the fulcrum, many, many thanks!

    Thanks for these awesome vids.
    I have a question.
    Sometimes I take the sticks between first and middle fingers and push and pull it with other fingers
    Similar to french and german grip but i don't use my thumb and hold sticks by first and middle fingers)
    By this strange mannar i can play fast and heavy very easy!
    It really works for me and improves the quality of sound fairly.
    Did you hear about this technique?
    I guess im not the first one that use this strange manner!
    Or maybe because my first instrument is bass and my fingers are powerful i think its easy and practical i don't know!
    Thanks.

    • @GKMusic54
      @GKMusic54  6 років тому

      Thanks! I have seen what you describe before, but not very often. If it works for you, use it. The issue most people would have with this is needing callouses between the first two fingers, where the stick pivots in the hand.

    • @tubular167
      @tubular167 4 роки тому +1

      I do that as well.. unorthodox but can get fast singles etc a bit like French grip...I thought I was only drummer that did this...so..nice to hear you do as well 😁

  • @mattmarkus4868

    Ok, keep the fingers on the stick at all times, but how far back to you put the pivot point / fingers for optimum balance? It seems if I try to hold the stick as far back as possible it does not bounce very well and therefore is not in balance, and if I go too far forward same thing.

    Hi Gordy.
    Sorry if this has been covered earlier.
    I noticed that you said that the middle & ring fingers need to always maintain contact with the stick to have a smooth action. Is there a reason you didn't mention the little fingers also?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @GKMusic54
      @GKMusic54  7 років тому +1

      The little finger gets involved when it gets loud. The louder you play the more fingers you need on the stick to control it.
