Restoring a Rusty Cleaver: Fractal Burning Meets 9V Battery Etching!

  • In this video, I restore an old, rusty cleaver and give it a completely new look using Fractal Burning and etching with the help of a 9V battery! The Fractal Burning technique, also known as "Lichtenberg Burning" or "Wood Fracking," gives the new oak handle a unique, branching pattern - a real highlight. This technique is fascinating but extremely dangerous and should only be used with great caution.
Another highlight: I etched the blade using a simple method - with a 9-volt battery, water, salt, and a cotton swab. With these basic materials, the metal surface can be transformed in a striking way.
The restoration process itself began with removing the rust from the cleaver. I then annealed it to make it easier to work with. After grinding and sandblasting, the blade was hardened in a heat-treating oven and quenched in oil. To achieve the right flexibility, I tempered the blade three times for an hour each.
I crafted the new handle from oak wood, enhanced it with Fractal Burning, and sealed it with epoxy resin to protect the wood. In the end, it’s a true masterpiece - the combination of the etched blade and the artistically finished handle makes this cleaver a unique eye-catcher!

Every knife of cleaver I've seen you restore, you've made circular handles! I'm perplexed as nearly all knives have either oval or rounded rectangle cross sections to stop them twisting dangerously in the hand, the epoxy joint also wouldn't really last. It was however a great watch with some interesting techniques and the end result was lovely 👌

You really shouldn't be doing fractal burning. I know it looks good, but it can be extremely dangerous. Even with "proper" equipment, people have gotten seriously hurt.

I'd like to think I know a fair amount of things, but admittedly I'm unfamiliar with fractal burning in general and it's dangerous nature. Lucky for me I strive to learn something new every day and he we are at 7:30 in the morning and I've been educated. This might actually be a good day. Absolutely great work my friend.
I stand corrected. I do know what fractal burning is, I've seen it more than a few times. I just didn't know what it was called.
