Pentiment Review

- Pentiment too often limits its most enjoyable pieces to reach an ending that makes sense but is still unfulfilling. Check out GameSpot's Review.
In Pentiment, you play as artist Andreas Maler, who is attempting to finish up his masterpiece while working for the Kiersau Abbey, which overlooks the Bavarian town of Tassing. A visiting baron draws the ire of both the farmers and craftspeople in town, as well as the Christian nuns and brothers of the abbey, but no one is prepared when he winds up dead. With Andreas' mentor--a man too old and feeble to have possibly overpowered the baron--pinned for the crime, the young illustrator vows to conduct his own private investigation in hopes of bringing the true culprit to justice. In doing so, Andreas is drawn into a strange conspiracy of cryptic notes and unspoken secrets, and his actions shape both Tassing and Kiersau Abbey in a story that spans a quarter of a century.

games requires brain, you take consequences for your actions, game is about actual time period? 6/10. bf2042 literally unplayable 7/10
They gave this a lower score than their original review of BF2042? Wait, seriously…
different reviewers bud
idk why people act like 6/10 is bad. Also different reviewers different genres different criteria, it's not hard to grasp
@@hoosler6876 yep even acg said it didn't click with him but he can see why it maybe would for someone else
Pentiment isn’t a game for dipshits. That’s why 90% of people don’t get it
this happens when you let a cod player review a different type of game
No one is going to play this junk. It’s like traveling back to the 1980’s to play games.
or maybe he just had grievances with the game??
@@stellarhyme3 For any PC gamer in the past 20 years playing a console game was as you described above.
@@stellarhyme3 i will play it. And so many people i know. Go back to fortnite
@@lSeKToRl PC hasn't even had any AAA exclusives in the past 20 years, the 90's was the golden age of PC gaming.
Not having enough time to go after every clue and having to choose which lead to follow while still having to make the final decisions without perfect information is the entire point, no?
L review from gamespot as always
IGN gave this a 10/10 but GameSpot is a bit more stingy with it's... 6/10?
Not just IGN, pentiment's metascore was sitting at a massive 92 before this score dragged it down
@@CommodoreMudkip because games spot chose a reviewer that probably only plays COD and Destiny and doesn't like games that you actually have to have a decent IQ play it.
@@MrWar2050 How do you know that? What aspects of their review come across like a exclusive FPS player, he seemed fine and the review was reasonable sounding.
acg wasn't feeling like that either 🤷♂️
@@hoosler6876 Exactly! The above dude game a template response everyone is giving to someone who doesn't like this game. "Must be a fornite player". Lol. This game isn't universally appealing. Meaning majority won't like it. The reviewer made some very valid points regarding the game but criticizing someone's anticipated game means "go back to fortnite". Childish tantrums.
You guys should consider hiring some people who actually know how to review games
If not for Elden Ring this would be my game of the year so far. While I completely admit this game isn’t for everyone, a 6 is a terrible score. I was almost not going to buy this because of GameSpot’s review and it would have cost me an incredible experience.
Please ignore this score and go out and buy this blind, if you love experiencing any kind of narrative driven games. You won’t be disappointed.
As always, Gamespot loves to be different.
Different strokes for different folks. I love Pentiment, but I got my Bachelor's in religious studies, and I'm fascinated by religious/political history, as well as philosophy, so this game was right up my alley.
Wow, this game is receiving acclaim. Interesting that you gave it a 6...
Just finished it. 6 is a good number for this without spoiling anything for you.
I just finished it. took me around 17 hours and I give it a 11/10.
@@ts7844 after the first muder mystery the story just goes down hill.
It's so funny how much gamespot and I grew apart over the 20+ years I've been using the site now youtube page. Anytime I see a review of theirs, I know it's going to be the complete opposite of how I feel or my thoughts on the game. They're always off in their views and maybe it's just now everyone who works there now is the complete opposite of me because whenever I see a low score on their site, I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy the game.
Hmm yet you have not even played the game....
People who work for Gamespot gave high scores to people who had paid adverts on their site. Just read up on the Kane and Lynch incident.
@SeKToR wow. Never read that before. Pretty damning. Thanks for the tip. Any more recent news like this about GS or other sites?
I saw my brother play to review the game for a website & I can confirm that it's the type of game which either people will totally love Or totally hate.
Wow...great insight, thank you!
Yeah it's obvious (at least to me) that these sorts of dialogue focused, story narrative and more slower paced gameplay, will be lost on the general audience.
These types of games aren't 'go to' games for people when people want more of a stress relief, action packed game with a simple drop in and drop out.
It's not necessarily a bad thing either. I just think that people don't have time, patience or even attention span for styles of gameplay that pentiment offers.
Maybe 'let's plays' videos of pentiment may be a way for these types of audiences to at least experience the story without having to play it themselves if it's not their typical game to actually play.
@@PlaceBoFXxo lol
Personally I loved it but it had many flaws when it came to gameplay and some huge bugs. 7.5/10 for me

IGN 10/10 Gamespot 6/10 will you kids realize now that reviews are "subjective opinions" and not FACTS?!
🤮🤮🤮 take L
What a surprise that an American doesn’t like a game about history.
A guy from a country that doesn’t have a history.
An American’s idea of culture is shouting “USA”! 🤦🏻♂️
Why do people care so much they gave it a 6/10? Play the game and form your own opinions instead of bashing somebody else’s. This game is obviously not for everyone, and it happens to be it wasn’t for this reviewer. Give the guy a break and move on with your lives. All reviews should be taken with a grain of salt anyways.
isnt this the same guy who did the infamous miles morales review?
Videogames are part art, not only flashing guns and shooting. Therefore I am very happy we have studies trying to express something different and remind us that story did not start when videogames came out. Thank you for that. Some people need to learn something new from time to time.
I love this period in history especially having grown up in the region...so this game is for me. Played about 2 hours and really enjoying it so far
GameSpot is the Onion of video games
The actual gameplay reminds me of a Space Quest or Kings Quest game from late 80's early 90's.
Those were the times man. I remember those.
Shame on u GameSpot
Xbox game - 2 points. Meanwhile let’s run the story about the dev complaining about the Series S five times in one day on Twitter.
LOL the discrepancy of this game reviews is uncanny
There's a triple A version of this game...its called kingdom come deliverance
Looks like the Jim Ryan check cleared just in time!
acg wasn't feeling it much either just because some reviewers didn't like it as much as others, doesn't mean someone was paid lol 🤷♂️

Yes! History is so much more fun when you are not burdened by such things as facts. Please, just tell a good story, by filling in all the details that we don't actually have with a bit of fun fiction writing! Make history tell the story you want!
/s It was so hard to get through the first minute of this review. History and historical fiction (like games set in history) are 2 completely different things.
Fully agreed. “History is simply what we make of it”.. right. That was a lot of bs in a few sentences. Facts are indeed facts, strangely enough.
So Gamespot decided to be the outlier this time? It's like you FNs love to take turns for clicks....
Terrible review and score. Dont trust it. It deserves much higher.
6/10 is a genuine insult and makes me wonder how this person is a "professional" reviewer
worst review of the year 2/10
Gamespot really is terrible
He might have been a little harsh but the reality is that this is a super niche game and the casual gamer -(which is the majority of gamers) probably don't really see this as much of a game where your history buff would probably see this as a 10/10 but you can't blame him for not liking a game that's basically an animated illuminated manuscript...
He isn't a casual gamer, he's a professional critic. For his opinion to fall so far wide of every other major critic in the industry is ridiculous, this is a bad review.
I think people dislike it cause NO game is for everyone but as a critic you should rate games based on "What those that WILL like this genre are going to feel about it"
@@CommodoreMudkip right that's why I said he was harsh but oddly he said he loved history - maybe it should have been someone who likes art history or something....
@@CommodoreMudkip isn't this pretty much what happened with the Korean reviewer of God of War?
@@CommodoreMudkip So, you would rather he just go along with the crowd instead of state his own opinion? But if he did that, you would call him a shill. It's funny reading comments like this because it's full of hypocrisy and the desperate need to say something to be a part of the conversation.
I get that the reviewer isn't a fan of the time limit in the game but I don't think the game should be docked for that. You're doing an investigation, it takes time, you can't speak to absolutely everyone in a day if you're doing an investigation, seems like good game design since it's tied directly into the game. That's just my opinion though ima give this a try this week
What if you’re a Virgo and need to know every single detail? My brain works this way. I hate being rushed.
@@JohnSmith-cz3us I mean I don't believe in moon signs but if you don't like being rushed in a game where you're not given infinite time to do as you want then it just sounds like the games not for you. Sounds like the game is built so you're not given infinite time since you are trying to solve a case, you're not given infinite time in real life to do as you want, game uses that as a mechanic and there's in game reasons as to why.
Congrats on missing the boat.
I love this game. For me it is 10/10. But I don't think this is a bad review. Most of the stuff he did not like is justified. It is just personal taste.
Reviewers are just mad their dialogue choices didn't get them the outcomes they wanted. The only thing that's really frustrating is you can never get the first two trials completely right. An innocent person will die so you may as well accuse someone you hate. I would have liked a little more resolution at the very end. I did not want to leave town.
terrible review, frustrating that the game creates time gates to make decisions matter, the game involves talking to and engaging with people (somehow terrible)
Zzzzzzz
Lol. The ratio in likes/dislikes
This guy clearly doesn't like these type of games, why let him review?
Ign give it 10/10
It's a Microsoft exclusive so not surprised it's a 6
Ing 10/10 you 6??? Hahaha :D
More positives than negatives is what I heard, but I guess that one negative was enough to drop it to the score it received. Thankfully, reviews are just one person's opinion and it won't sway me from purchasing this game or not. I for one, am interested in it as it looks very fun and unique.
I see this a lot with these media outlets reviews, their scores won't match their opinions
Lol now everybody's probably going to attack gamespot how dare you give it six when IGN gave it a masterpiece
Thanks, I’ll play God of War
Gamespot is lost
This seems like a game for me.
Thumbs down on this video says it all 2/3rds dislike.
Only 13 TF of powah! can bring you this.
What you talking about? This will look exactly the same in 20 years whilst Ragnarok will look old and dated.

So when is next-gen coming to Xbox?
Same could be said for Playstation
@@The3ushido nah it cant. Demon's Souls, Ratchet, Returnal and a few cross-gen games that actually takes advantage of the NEW hardware like Miles, Spider-Man Remastered, HFW. Xbox has NOTHING that uses the new hardware or its feature set, not even the cross-gen games. No RT in anything, no next-gen levels of detail and granular detail. Nothing to push the hardware hard or to show u why its $500. My bro has a SX and he's STILL waiting to see why he spent $500.
@@TheeThunderGod Those are not next gen. lol
so when are brain cells coming to your brain. Imagine doing console wars
@@victime4360 and there aint a war. Xbox is dead last every gen, loses players every gen, has the least technical boundary pushing games, the cheapest budgeted games, broken 1st party games, no new IP hardly, sales 1/3 of the consoles ps does, etc. The war was over after the ps2 and ps3 bro.

pretty funny gamespot would give both this game and Prey lower scores than cyberpunk 2077
The game is a flash slideshow game. The game is 12fps
I’ve played this and outside of Elden Ring and Ragnarok this is easily one of my favorite games of the year. Maybe have a reviewer play the game that actually enjoys RPGs instead of a “walking Apex Legends encyclopedia”
RPG? What makes this "game" RPG?
@@yelochicken8875 Choice driven gameplay. You flesh Andreas out as a main character. There’s also a lot of persuasion checks. It’s an old school point and click RPG, similar to Disco Elysium.
I beat this game and choices(including BG) in the game do not really matter. Many stories are fixed whatever you choose and only few dialogues are changed. The limits for movement, conversation, interaction are everywhere. You said DE and DE did it better even it was criticized also its RPG aspects.
