4:02 It's a really cool detail how Sebhat is drawn in a different style (more closely resembling the Ethiopian tradition of illumination) to convey how foreign he looks. Also, I'm glad the art team took a bit of liberty when designing the child characters and cutefied them a bit - those children from late medieval / early modern art looked TERRIFYING
Great video, and a good game. Did anyone else feel they were completely immersed in the Tassing community by the end of the game? I felt like I was at home and belonged in that community, by the time the Winter festival arrived.
It's a shame that this game isn't that recognized in Mainstream.. People (self proclaimed critics) saying God of War Ragnarok a masterpiece when it's just another game that does same thing 100 other similar game does when this game doea something very unique in 2022.. And I blame such thing alot on reviews cause I seen many reviews that say the same "not for everyone" BS.. Your review is something that actually tells where the game excels, what to expect while still keeping lot of things for us to explore on our own while playing.. Good work..
Yeah the broadness of an audience shouldn't dictate the quality of the work. Pentiment isn't a game I constantly replay like some of my top games of all time, but I still rank it up there, because it achieves exactly what it sets out to do and it does it masturfully.
I just happened to have picked this game up recently. It's a very unique game with a lot of depth to it. I've been drawn in to all the little details of every scene as it seems like everything is there on screen with a purpose to tell you something even if it doesn't spell it out for you. Also kudos for defining pentimento for us at the beginning of the video! It really helps setup the concept behind this game!

I was shocked, their hand writing changing to the handwriting of the notes that the murderers received throughout the game as you figure out who it is made my jaw drop honestly One of the first times in a LONG time I was genuinely shocked by a narrative twist, I didn’t see it coming at all
Coming to this video a year late, but so happy to see more content talking about this masterpiece. I grew up really involved in a fundamentalist Christian church, and despite all the absolutely awful parts of that upbringing, I cherish the knowledge I gained about the history of how the Bible, and subsequently, most books were written/copied/printed throughout time. In my adult life, that knowledge hardly has reason to be recalled, but this game brought all those memories back. Pentiment was such a a fun experience, and a wonderful story.
This is probably going to end up being my favorite game I played all year, loved seeing your thoughts on it! Really dug the opening animation in the style of Pentiment.

That was interesting. I've heard a lot of good things about this game, but it's been a hard sell without an introduction to its setting and mechanics, since those are hard to make out by reading a simple review. But they certainly fell into place now. I can't help but drawing parallels to Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Although a very different type of game, it's too built around some of the same mechanics (passing of time, social dynamics, language skills etc), and a few similar themes. Anyhow, it seems like the kind of game for a history buff like me so I'll be checking it out. Thank you so much for making this video.

Indie games are more willing to try something new or focus on elevating one part to art or masterpiece quality. They add a lot of vibrancy to the video game industry. However, sales figures alone prove that the vast majority of gamers still prefer the AAA experience. That's how I define "better." It's better for me if I like it more. If most people like it more, it's objectively better. There is a professional take on games done by people who are educated in the technical aspects of their creation, and I respect their opinion. I respect the creator of Angry Centaur Gaming reviews for that reason. Other times, I put my trust in the majority who came before. This is why I agree with your second point, that AAA games blend together, but also think it's OK. The formula stays the same because it works. Some people can whine and hate on COD all they want. The games will still be made. I like COD, especially the original Modern Warfare series. But not all AAA games are like that. Some do try to make incremental changes, a timid new step. I am sorry, but I am blanking out on good examples. You probably know better examples of what I am talking about than I do. You can do your part to help encourage change by spotlighting these improvements, without sacrificing your platform by either shunning them entirely or pandering to the least common denominator. --- The rest goes off on a tangent. I am not even convinced Persona 5 on Xbox is that big of a deal; it's new on Xbox but still a 2016 game. But I've heard it asked of you more than once, and if I wait, I'll probably forget what I want to say when it matters. I share your fear of the time commitment to that. I had a trying experience with P3 and P4. I don't have to create content though. Just, if you ever play to create content, try to get help when it comes to the persona fusion, or whatever the equivalent mechanic is in P5. That easily consumed more than half of my time in P3 and P4. Also, if you are not used to simulation of Japanese high school life or have had bad experience with that, prepare yourself. Is it going to be more edifying for you or your audience than this video essay? Probably not. But I expect it will entertain more people.
I love this subject. Perspectives on storytelling is fascinating to me, and you hit this out of the park. Wonderful video, Pam. (Also, the changing writing style based on the player character's perception is just subtly brilliant -- it tells you something not only about the NPC but about your character as well.)

I love inventive concepts like these. Having Gods name in red is a feature in the King James bible so it's cool how they focus on the most minor of details. And interestingly, paintings were often painted over because the artists were so poor they couldn't afford another canvas to paint on. I'll need to give this game a try if I get the chance.

Great game, I've completed it just about when it was released to the xgp. Only thing I didn't like, is that I don't think it's possible to lose in any way, other than accusing a less likely suspect.
This looks fantastic. No doubt they drew some kind of inspiration from Eco's The Name of the Rose. (In fact, these developers ought to get the game rights for the novel; they would hit it out the park. I would love to see the labyrinthine abbey library done in a clever game like this.)
It's absolutely inspired by the Name of The Rose. The book you erase at the beginning of the game is literally the beginning of that novel, and you can find a book when you break into the library that literally has the exact maps of the un-named Abbey and the labyrinthian library that you can find in the novel

I just rolled credits on this and it is best game of 2022. Amazing work of history and storytelling.
All i can say is im totally inmersed in this game. Its starts somewhat slow but as the story unfolds is a joyride

Indie games are generally much better than AAA games, which all kinda blend together.

10:40 it's like they read The Name of the Rose and made a game of all the things they didn't address in the original movie adaptation.
The developers have explicitly cited name of the rose as an influence on the game, and there are direct references made to it therein
